BACKGROUND I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to my lecturer Ms. Zalina, for the guidance and support in completing this project. It is great pleasure for me to undertake this project. Although, this magazine has been prepared with utmost care and deep interest, it still have a lot of imperfection due to the author limited experience.

This issue is featuring about one of the state in Malaysia, which is Sabah. Sabah expedition is nothing but hands-on exploration for student to experience and explore different culture in Sabah. It delivers the ability to observe, interpret and document findings in a multicultural environment of Sabah. Ideas will be express effectively in visual and written form. By visualizing and recording findings, a publication are made.

Welcome to the very first edition of Sabah Expedition

magazine. Writing has been one of my favourite hobby since these past two years. As I write, I realized that I have so much thing in my mind. When I write, all my feeling, worry, doubt, just fall out of me in a piece of paper. Eventually, it helps to understand myself more and more. So, let’s talk about travel. As a university student, I have a very strong desire to travel. In my age of twenty, all I want is to explore new things, to meet new people and to experience different culture. Who doesn’t? Yet, I’m not affluent. But I strongly believe that it should not limit my wings to fly. There are many places all over the world that you can just go and experience with even lesser amount of expenses than which you need to spend in your own hometown. Travel will always be an integral part of life and life is too short to be spend in only one place.

A must-visit in Kundasang is the Kundasang War Memorial. Established in 1962, this was one of

the first memorials to commemorate the brave Australian and British Prisoners of War who died in Sandakan and during the infamous death marches to Ranau during World War II. The memorial also remembers the people of North Borneo who risked their lives to help the POWs. The Memorial is made up of four beautiful gardens - the Australian Garden, the English Garden, the Borneo Garden and the Contemplation Garden and Pool - to represent the different nationalities. With its towering pine trees and blooming roses, a walk in the gardens is reminiscent to that of a stroll in a quaint English garden. The scent of roses lingers in the air and the serene atmosphere makes the Kundasang War Memorial an ideal place to contemplate and remember the heroes of the war.

Remember the love-locks of Paris? or love lock at N Seoul Tower?

Love locks have proliferated at an increasing number of locations worldwide. At Sabah, they have teapot of love. At first you may just notice it as a teapot - symbol of Sabah Tea Restaurant. But as you walk closer, you will find that many people has locked their padlock there. You can put your padlock there with your names or initial on it. It symbolises unbreakable love. TAMPARULI SUSPENSION BRIDGE I’m making a “Pak Pak” sound As I walk along the bridge The bridge of Tamparuli while wearing high-heeled shoes - Justin Lusah

It’s a folk song “Jambatan Tamparuli” (jambatan means bridge)

written by Justin Lusah in 1977. He is Kadazandusun’s greatest songwriter. The song is written in Kadazandusun language, which then translate in English by Ben Godomon. However this is not the original bridge in Justin Lusah’s song. The original bridge was washed away in the biggest flood ever to hit Tamparuli in January 1999. Not long after that, the construction of the new bridge started and it is what we see today. Tamparuli suspension bridge is a small bridge used by pedestrian. Nice river passing underneath. You can enjoy the beautiful view of the surrounding area. It is a good spot for photography too. A walk across the Tamparuli Suspension Bridge gives one an edgy feeling, as one can feel the bridge swings and sways. The very special thing about this bridge is the historical value. So, be there and get to know it by yourself!
