Originally trained as an architect and urban designer, Jack is now a researcher and system designer at Dark Matter Laboratories - a strategic design and development office based in London. His work combines research, design thinking and system visualisation to tackle complex societal challenges. Jack is also one of the founding members of urban and technology think tank In-Between Economies based in Copenahgen.

EXPERIENCE

2017- DARK MATTER LABORATORIES, LONDON present Strategic designer and research lead on a range of projects that focus on developing key products for

instutional reform as well as to develop new methodolgies for collaborative system innovation. My work is based in the UK context yet the projects I am part of have developed key networks with partners, clients, and collaborators across the world, researching and developing new support frameworks for collaborative system change.

2016- INNOVATION UNIT, LONDON 2017 My role as a design researcher spanned several projects, in a range sectors. The main focus of my

work was to develop a new body of research around place-based, social innovation and urban strategy for UK cities. This was done through both a live project in partnership with a local government, as well gathering insights and examples of best practice both within the UK and abroad. This involved taking on significant responsibility for both project management and research. Running concurrently to this I was an integral part of shaping an internal review of the organisations future mission, brand and communications identity.

2015- IN-BETWEEN ECONOMIES, RESEARCH GROUP, LONDON/COPENHAGEN

Founding member of interdisciplinary research collective based between London and Copenhagen. We organise public lectures, debate sessions and workshops in partnership with a range of organisations & individuals; from local council leaders, social innovators and academics. We focus on the future of architecture, politics and urban economies. It requires strong self motivating and a passion for understanding the challenges and opportunities that cities face.

2017 CMPNDM - MATERIAL WORLD, MADE IN SPACE (SPACE10)

Design, build and project management for IKEA’s Space10 launch event - Material World was one of the festival venues and hosted hackable furniture made from raw materials.

2016 SAM JACOBS STUDIO, LONDON

Worked on a range of public realm and private architectural projects as a key designer. Produced presentation and proposal documents to present to clients and public authorities.

2016 BESSARD STUDIOS - VENICE BIENNALE

Collaborative research project and design project as a contribution to the Danish pavilion at the Venice biennale 2016. The project focused on the housing and mortgage market in Copenhagen.

2016 CMPNDM - TRAILERPARK FESTIVAL, COPENHAGEN

Design, build and project management of a reusable festival installation. Selected as the team to design the first architectural proposal for the festival to celebrate it’s ten year anniversary.

2015 CMPNDM - CPH:DOX FESTIVAL HEADQUARTERS, COPENHAGEN

Concept design, build and project management of the identity and temporary installation of the festival headquarters. Worked in close collaboration with the festival manager and her team.

2012- GRIMSHAW ARCHITECTS, LONDON 2013 Worked for 18 months on site as an architectural assistant on London Bridge Station redevelopment. Given significant design and co-ordination responsibility within the first 6 months.

2011- CMPNDM

Founder of design, research and engagement practice based between London and Copenhagen.

2010 KCAP, ZURICH

Worked for three months as an architectural assistant

2017 ‘DEMOCRA-CITY’ - SPACE 10, COPENHAGEN (CHAIR & ORGANISER)

Second of a 3 part mini series event in partnership with Space 10 about the relationship between citizens, the state and democracy in the tech era. Guest speakers included Indy Johar (Project 00).

2017 ‘OPEN SOURCE WELFARE’ - SPACE 10, COPENHAGEN (CHAIR & ORGANISER)

First of a 3 part mini series event in partnership with Space 10 about the relationship between citizens, the state and democracy in the tech era. Guest speakers included Finn Williams (GLA), as promenant danish academics and designers.

2017 ‘INFO-NATION’ - SPACE 10, COPENHAGEN (CHAIR & ORGANISER)

Hosted a debate event in partnership with Space 10 about the future of the digital state. Guest speakers included members of Copenhagens municipal smart cities team, a representative from the Strelka institute to talk about google urbanism, as well as anthrologists and designers.

2017 ‘LIVEABILITYMAX’ - ARCSPACE

Article published on that investigated the link between city regeneration, liveability and affordability. The artcile formed part of the follow up from the event at space10.

2017 ‘LIVEABILITYMAX’ - SPACE 10, COPENHAGEN (CHAIR & ORGANISER)

Hosted a debate event on the future of the liveable city and its relationship with land economics & sustainability. Run in partnership with Space 10 (Ikea’s in house innovation team). Guests include Tina Saaby (City architect of Copenhagen municipality) & Rasmus Hougaard Nielsen (Head of Positive Money, DK, Lecturer at C.B.S.)

2017 DESIGN & RESEARCH PRACTICES TO WATCH - ARCHINECT (FEATURED) Featured as part of showcase on ‘InBetween Economies’.

2016 ART OF THE MANY - DANISH ARCHITECTURE CENTRE, VENICE BIENNALE Article and research publication of the work behind the project ‘beyond luxury’ that explored the relationship between household debt, urban regeneration and the liveability agenda.

2016 COPENHAGEN ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL (SPEAKER)

Presentation and debate panel with Copenhagen’s city architect and another leading danish urban think tank to discuss ‘Gentrification, social segregation & urban equality’ (on behalf of in-between economies).

2016 ‘POWER SPAGHETTI’ - DESIERTO MAGAZINE, MONEY ISSUE (CONTRIBUTION)

Invited to write an article on the complex interdependencies of city regeneration in developed economies. Piece was requested by guest editors dpr-barcelona, an architectural research company based in Barcelona
