Brad Erickson Head Coach South Dakota State University head coach Brad Erickson is entering his 35th season as the head coach of the Jackrabbit men’s and women’s swimming teams. Since being named head swimming coach in 1976, Erickson has coached the Jackrabbit men to a North Central Conference championship in 1979 and the SDSU women to an NCC title in 1981. In the 2000-01 season he was named the North Central Conference Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year after leading SDSU to a fourth-place finish at the conference meet. In the fall of 2002, Erickson was honored with SDSU’s Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence, which honors an SDSU alumnus in the field of education and coaching. A 1974 graduate of South Dakota State, Erickson became the first SDSU swimmer to compete in the NCAA Division II Championships, as a junior. The Arlington, S.D., native won three North Central Conference titles, winning the 200-yard breaststroke twice and the 100-yard breaststroke once. Erickson has continued to represent SDSU at NCAA swimming championships during his coaching career, serving as a meet official and judge at the Division I women’s and men’s championships since 1982. He also has served as the NCAA Division II Championships coordinator and is a past member of the NCAA Swimming Committee. Aside from his duties as swimming coach, Erickson has taught aquatics courses, recreational sports programming and administration, organization and administration of HPER and various other activity courses. He and his wife, Jennifer, are the parents of two grown sons: Benji and Blake. Benji was a standout swimmer for the Jackrabbits from 2000-03.

Phil Hurley

Zach Hawley

Assistant Coach

Diving Coach

Coach Phil Hurley enters his sixth season as assistant men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at South Dakota State this fall. Hurley is the recruiting coordinator for SDSU, specializes in the distance events and assists Coach Erickson with team practices and events. Hurley says, “I have swam and worked with a lot of great coaches and by being an athlete myself I try to pass along my experiences to the athletes so they can learn from my mistakes and my successes.” Hurley competed collegiately at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., where he served as team captain for three seasons before graduating in 1998. After completing a military commitment in the U.S. Army, Hurley enrolled in graduate school at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., serving as a graduate assistant swimming coach for two seasons while completing a master’s degree in exercise, fitness and health promotion. While at George Mason, Hurley also coached several club and youth teams in Northern Virginia. Hurley serves as the chair of the South Dakota Masters Swimming branch and is a member of the U.S. Masters Swimming organization.

2 Swimming & Diving

Zach Hawley is in his first season with the South Dakota State swimming and diving teams as diving coach. A native of Omaha, Neb., Hawley competed at the University of North Dakota from 2004-2008, where he qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships in diving four times. He then went on to become assistant diving coach at UND the past two seasons. Prior to competing at North Dakota, he coached club teams and gave diving lessons in Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Forks for a combined nine years. During the summer of 2010, he was a guest coach at the University of Missouri and University of Texas diving camps, while also working as an observer at the Olympic Diving Training Center in Indianapolis. Hawley was a high diver for Mirage Entertainment from 20052009, which entailed stunts such as high diving from 70 feet into nine feet of water, lighting himself on fire and diving from 30 feet, clown diving, acting, teaching divers how to high dive, as well as synchronize dives. Hawley is working toward his master’s degree at South Dakota State.

• SDSU Men’s Swimming & Diving Season Preview • The 2010-11 South Dakota State men’s swimming and diving team seems poised to improve on their best Summit League finish last season with a squad made up of equally talented veterans and underclassmen. The Jacks have five swimmers or divers at every class and may have the best team, top to bottom, in the last five years. “I think that the overall difference is the quality that we have coming in,” said head coach Brad Erickson who is entering his 35th season. “We only lost two seniors so we are very versatile and have options.” Erickson will look to seniors Jason Garder and Mark Sandager to lead. Both were a part of separate relay record setting teams at the conference championships The most outstanding swimmer of last season was freshman Kyle Ochsner. Ochsner excelled in distance freestyle events as was evident with his nine victories, three school records and earning Summit League swimmer of the week. On the diving side, Brad Schoreit could not have started off his college career any better than by breaking the 29-year-old school record in 3-meter diving in the season opening meet vs. North Dakota last season. Schoreit was selected Summit League Athlete of the Week for his performance. The Omaha native would go on to break the 3-meter record four times as well as the 1-meter record twice. Another standout freshman from last year was Shea Patrick who competed in breaststroke and individual medley events. Patrick set career best marks in the 100 and 200 breaststroke as well as the 200 IM at the 2010 conference meet. “All have made great improvements in that first year and we look for that to continue this year,” Erickson said. A pair of freshman that can be immediate impact performers according to Erickson are Chris Schreier and Phil Albu. Schreier is a butterflyer who is very versatile, while Albu will help the Jacks in the backstroke. The mix of youth and experience will bode well for SDSU and give motivation for both sides.

KYLE OCHSNER set school records in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle events during his freshman season in 2009-10.

“The veterans are going to look at those trying to keep their spot and improve on where they finished last season, while the young kids are shooting for those upperclassmen,” Erickson said. SDSU has always stayed steady or improved on their Summit League finishes each year they have been in the league and this season should be no different. “We would hope to improve on that fourth-place finish from a year ago,” said Erickson. “With the freshmen that we have coming in and improvements with our divers, that will only help in scoring at conference. Those things added with the improvement of those that we already have on the squad will give us that depth and experience to improve in the standings.” The Summit League Championships are slated for Feb. 17-19 in Indianapolis.

• SDSU Swimming & Diving Preview • After having experience to rely on the past few seasons, this year’s South Dakota State women’s swimming and diving team will have an injection of youth like they have never seen before. The Jacks will try and replace the nine seniors they lost from last season’s second place Summit League squad with a record 15 freshmen. That makes the leadership from the team’s two seniors, Alex Hoffman and Cassie Kozar, that much more significant along with the six returning juniors. “Those two seniors will definitely have leadership roles that will be developing and important,” said head coach Brad Erickson who is entering his 35th season at the helm. Hoffman is entering her final season of an outstanding career as a Jackrabbit. In her first two years, the Eureka, S.D., native holds seven school records along with 35 wins, including 24 last season. With only two seniors, the SDSU junior class will have a chance to step up led by Jessica Ferley and Ashley Valdez. Ferley has excelled in freestyle and backstroke events, while Valdez has done the same in the butterfly. Over the past two years, both have solidified SDSU’s relay teams with a combined 34 relay victories and rewriting the school record book. Valdez has been a part of two relay records, while Ferley has been a member of all five school record relay events. “The maturity and leadership that we lost from those seniors is big. We expect that each year our swimmers are here, they are developing leadership skills, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be a senior. We have some juniors that are very capable of stepping in as well.” One of the biggest holes that SDSU will have to fill is the loss of Katie Budahl who ended her career with 42 wins and four school records in only two seasons. Erickson will look to freshmen Alanah Bird and Stephanie Young to pick up some of that slack, especially in Budahl’s feature event; the breaststroke. “Hopefully we can replace some of that quality lost with Budahl with a little bit of depth added by Bird and Young.” A few other freshmen that could have immediate impacts are

Emma Gaulke-Janowski in distance freestyle, Fawn Weihl in middistance freestyle/butterfly and Emma Wright in butterfly and individual medley events. Two names that will sound familiar are (Kayleigh) Boucher and (Katie) Budahl. Both were seniors that graduated, but both have freshmen siblings ready to take their place. Kelsey Boucher will swim distance freestyle like her sister, but Andrea Budahl is just the opposite of hers. Andrea is very versatile and can compete in any event according to Erickson, except the breaststroke, which was Katie’s specialty. Even with the young team, Erickson sees no reason why the Jacks should take a step back. “I would be very disappointed if we didn’t hold on to that spot of runner-up at the conference meet. Our goal is obviously to win the conference and each year we have been in the league, we have moved up and narrowed the gap that separates Oakland and us.”

Dr. David L. Chicoine • President David L. Chicoine, Ph.D., became the 19th president of South Dakota State University on January 1, 2007. He is the third alumnus to serve as president of the institution. Dr. Chicoine has a long association with intercollegiate athletics, and served as vice chair of the President’s Council for The Summit League — SDSU’s conference home for 18 of its 21 varsity sports — during the 2009-10 academic year. Previously, Chicoine served as the faculty representative to the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served as chair of the Budget and Finance Committee for the Big Ten Conference for nine years of his 11-year term. During his tenure at South Dakota State, Chicoine has directed the creation of a comprehensive strategic plan that has outlined four core goals: • Enhance academic excellence and strengthen scholarship and artistic activities; • Foster economic growth, vibrant communities, and a sustainable environment; • Expand the reach of the university through engagement, technology, and globalization; • Establish a sustainable financial resource base. Dr. Chicoine brought more than 30 years of experience in higher education with the University of Illinois to his role as president of SDSU. He is a nationally recognized economist, specializing in public finance, taxation, and rural economics. His higher education administrative experience includes service as Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Dean of the College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, at the University of Illinois. Dr. Chicoine is a graduate of SDSU with a B.S. in agribusiness in 1969, and the University of Delaware where he received an M.S. in agricultural economics in 1971. In 1978, he received an M.A. in economics from Western Illinois University, and in 1979 he completed his Ph.D. in agricultural economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Justin Sell • Director of Athletics Justin Sell is in his second year as director of athletics at South Dakota State University. He was introduced as the 12th director of athletics at SDSU on May 7, 2009, after serving 10 years as an athletics administrator at the University of Northern Iowa. At South Dakota State, Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21-sport Division I varsity athletics program. Eighteen SDSU teams compete in The Summit League, while football competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision, and wrestling is a member of the Western Wrestling Conference. Women’s equestrian competes in Varsity Equestrian and the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. During his first year at SDSU, the Jackrabbits displayed success across the board, winning Summit League regular season titles in men’s cross country, women’s soccer and baseball and a conference tournament championship in women’s basketball. The football and women’s basketball teams made postseason NCAA Tournament appearances. Sell also implemented aggressive marketing and fundraising initiatives which resulted in record average attendance for football and the highest number of donors and dollars donated to the Jackrabbit Club. In the years to come, Sell wants to continue reconnecting with former Jackrabbit student-athletes and enhancing the athletic facilities while still maintaining success on the field, court, track, in the pool, and most importantly, in the classroom. In the classroom, Jackrabbit student-athletes continued to excel as SDSU claimed The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 academic year. In the spring of 2010, 67 percent of Jackrabbit student-athletes posted a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. Sixteen of 19 teams — indoor and outdoor track are combined into one men’s and one women’s team — held cumulative team GPAs of 3.0 or higher. Sell most recently served as senior associate athletic director at UNI since 2006. His primary duties at the Cedar Falls-based university included sport management, oversight of the athletic business office, facilities, game management, summer camps and human resources, while also assisting in fundraising and corporate sponsorships. Prior to joining the staff at UNI, Sell worked four years at Villanova University (Pa.), where he was an assistant director of athletic facilities and intramural director before being named director of ticket operations. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/ sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992.

Dr. Mylo Hellickson • Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Mylo Hellickson has served as South Dakota State University’s faculty representative to the NCAA and affiliated conferences since 1977. He oversaw Jackrabbit Athletics as acting director of athletics from January 2009 until May 2009, prior to the appointment of Justin Sell. Hellickson currently is a professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering after serving several years as director of agriculture Extension at SDSU. He has been on the SDSU staff since 1969, serving as a professor in agricultural engineering until he was appointed as head of that department during the summer of 1982. Hellickson mentors engineering students from start to finish, teaching Introduction to Engineering courses, as well as overseeing Senior Design Project and Seminar work. Dr. Hellickson’s specialty has been in the area of livestock structures and environment with recent research focusing on odor reduction in livestock confinement structures. A registered professional engineer, Hellicksonis a member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship. A native of Belfield, N.D., he earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculturel engineering from North Dakota State University in 1964, added a master’s degree in ag engineering from NDSU in 1966, and later earned a Ph.D. in engineering at West Virginia University in 1969. Hellickson was presented the North Central Conference Meritorious Service Award at the November 1990 meeting.

• About SDSU •

With a record enrollment of 12,816 students in the fall of 2010, South Dakota State University is the state’s largest institution of higher education. EARLY HISTORY Located in Brookings, SDSU was authorized in 1881 by the Territorial Legislative Assembly and serves as the state’s land-grant institution. Territorial Council member John O’Brien Scobey, failing to obtain the penitentiary for Brookings, managed to secure Dakota Agricultural College for his city. Although allocations fell short of the actual cost, the school was able to open in the fall of 1884 because the president, George Lilley, was willing to advance $500 — one-third of his salary — to finish three rooms in the new Central Building. In 1887, the Agricultural Experiment Station was established under the federal Hatch Act and linked to the University to conduct research that concerned agriculture and the home. The Cooperative Extension Service was added in 1914 through the Smith-Lever Act. During the first year of operation, only preparatory classes were held. College classes started in 1885 with five teachers, 17 freshman and 61 preparatory students. Growth was slow and erratic for many years, but by the turn of the 20th century there were 242 students. By 1990, enrollment topped more than 9,000 students. Today, students from all 50 states and more than 40 nations attend SDSU. More than 70,000 degrees have been granted since the college was chartered in 1881.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY features an 18-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. Over the past five years, the average placement rate at SDSU has been 95 percent, with placement in selected majors like pharmacy and engineering approaching 100 percent.

COLLEGES ESTABLISHED The structure of the college became more complex as enrollments increased. The first nine chairs of instruction established in 1884 included agriculture, science, mathematics,

English, modern languages, military tactics, veterinary science, practical business, political and domestic economy, and music. By 1907, the year the name of the institution was changed to South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, there were 22 departments on campus. In 1964, when “State College” was renamed South Dakota State University, there were six colleges; today degrees are offered through these eight colleges: • Agricultural and Biological Sciences • Arts and Sciences • Education and Human Sciences • Engineering • General Studies • Nursing • Pharmacy • Graduate School • Honors College SDSU also offers degree programs through the University Center in Sioux Falls. Evening, RDTN, Internet and off-campus courses are coordinated through the Office of Academic Affairs and Outreach. (continued on next page)

• About SDSU •

SDSU BY THE NUMBERS In its 130-year history, South Dakota State has grown from a campus of 80 acres in 1881 to a 422-acre campus with facilities worth more than $380 million. The University owns or leases another 15,000 acres for research throughout the state. South Dakota State University is experiencing unprecedented growth, both in enrollment and building projects. Projects recently completed or currently under way include: • The $48 million, 144,000-square-foot Avera Health and Science Center; • Harding Hall South, a 30,000-square-foot building that will house an expansion within the College of Engineering; • The $6 million Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center; • Jackrabbit Village, a complex of three suite-style residence halls; • A University Student Union expansion and renovation project, which included a • A $7.8 million campus wellness center; and • Expansion of the dairy manufacturing plant. Additional facility projects and enhancements to academic programs are being identified through the SDSU Foundation’s “It Starts With State” campaign, a comprehensive fundraising inititative designed to raise $200 million by the end of 2012. In addition, the Enterprise Institute building, which also houses the SDSU Foundation, was completed in the fall of 2004. The Enterprise Institute is designed to facilitate SDSU and industry resources to encourage and assist the

establishment of entrepreneurial growth enterprises in the region. More than 200 majors, minors and options are available at SDSU with more than 2,500 different course offerings. Master’s degrees are offered in more than 30 areas and doctorates are available in eight fields. SDSU is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and numerous departments on campus have earned accreditation from various agencies. More than 2,000 people are employees of SDSU, and the University’s total operating budget was more than $195 million in Fiscal Year 2007. Supplementing classroom instruction are the Harding Distinguished Lecture Series, the F.O. Butler Lectures, the Lusk Lecture and the Amdahl, Schultz-Werth and Griffiths endowments. To realize this goal, SDSU faculty are involved in five research centers: • Center for Infectious Disease Research and Vaccinology • Center for Bioprocessing Research and Development • Center for Drought Tolerance Biotechnology • Center for Accelerated Applications at the Nanoscale • Center for the Research and Development of Light-Activated Materials An agreement between SDSU and Argonne National Laboratory will develop opportunities for SDSU faculty and students working in partnership to pursue fields of science that advance science and technology-driven economic development in South Dakota. MUSEUMS AND ATTRACTIONS The educational opportunities don’t end in the classroom or laboratory as South Dakota State University is home to several facilities, including museums and gardens, which highlight South Dakota history and heritage. The South Dakota Art Museum houses several collections, including early Sioux Indian tribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens. The State Agricultural Heritage Museum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota. The 70-acre McCrory Gardens and South Dakota Arboretum, located south and east of campus, provide a beautiful setting for area residents and tourists to enjoy a stroll through the radiant colors and fragrances of one of the

top 10 small ornamental gardens in the nation. It is also recognized as an All-American Display Garden, one of only 13 in the nation. In 1993, McCrory Gardens was designated an All-American Judging Garden to conduct research on annual flowers. In 1982, the area north of the formal garden was dedicated to the planting and testing of ornamental trees and shrubs. The 45-acre site was designated the South Dakota State Arboretum in 1988. Perhaps South Dakota State’s most recognizable landmark is the 165-foot Coughlin Campanile, the state’s largest chimes tower. A climb of 179 steps leads to a panoramic view of the city. The statuesque structure on the west end of campus was a $65,000 gift from 1909 engineering graduate Charles Coughlin, who later went on to become head of the Briggs & Stratton Corporation. Coughlin laid the campanile’s cornerstone on June 10, 1929. Since then, its chimes have called students to classes with the famous Westminster peals. An alumni-sponsored project to restore the campanile was completed in the summer of 2001. Adjacent to the campanile, Coolidge-Sylvan Theatre has provided a restful, green haven for students since its dedication by President Calvin Coolidge in September 1927. Over the years the outdoor amphiteater has

been the site of concerts, graduations and inaugurations for university presidents. Woodbine Cottage, the home of the university president, is a charming example of Queen Anne architecture. Built in 1887 by South Dakota Agricultural College’s second president, Dr. Lewis McLouth, the home is crowned by multiple roof lines. The house also has served as a women’s dormitory, music hall and infirmary. STATE’S LARGEST LIBRARY The Hilton M. Briggs Library, the state’s largest, was opened in 1977 and joined South Dakota’s statewide automated library network in 1988. Through the library, users have access to holdings from all 10 of the state’s libraries, including official documents and more than 1 million other holdings at Briggs. THE BROOKINGS COMMUNITY Today, Brookings is a growing community of about 18,700 people. Located 20 miles west of the Minnesota border and 50 miles north of Sioux Falls in east-central South Dakota, Brookings is situated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and Interstate 29. The community also is home to several recognizable companies including Rainbow Play Systems, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M), Larson Manufacturing, and Daktronics, a leading manufacturer of scoreboards and display systems.
