• SDSU Swimming & Diving Coaches •
Brad Erickson Head Coach South Dakota State University head coach Brad Erickson is entering his 36th season as the head coach of the Jackrabbit men’s and women’s swimming teams. Since being named head swimming coach in 1976, Erickson has coached the Jackrabbit men to a North Central Conference championship in 1979 and the SDSU women to an NCC title in 1981. In the 2000-01 season he was named the North Central Conference Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year after leading SDSU to a fourth-place finish at the conference meet. In the fall of 2002, Erickson was honored with SDSU’s Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence, which honors an SDSU alumnus in the field of education and coaching. A 1974 graduate of South Dakota State, Erickson became the first SDSU swimmer to compete in the NCAA Division II Championships, as a junior. The Arlington, S.D., native won three North Central Conference titles, winning the 200-yard breaststroke twice and the 100-yard breaststroke once. Erickson has continued to represent SDSU at NCAA swimming championships during his coaching career, serving as a meet official and judge at the Division I women’s and men’s championships since 1982. He also has served as the NCAA Division II Championships coordinator and is a past member of the NCAA Swimming Committee. Aside from his duties as swimming coach, Erickson has taught aquatics courses, recreational sports programming and administration, organization and administration of HPER and various other activity courses. He and his wife, Jennifer, are the parents of two grown sons: Benji and Blake. Benji was a standout swimmer for the Jackrabbits from 2000-03.
Phil Hurley
Zach Hawley
Assistant Coach
Diving Coach
Coach Phil Hurley enters his seventh season as assistant men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at South Dakota State this fall. Hurley is the recruiting coordinator for SDSU, specializes in the distance events and assists Coach Erickson with team practices and events. Hurley says, “I have swam and worked with a lot of great coaches and by being an athlete myself I try to pass along my experiences to the athletes so they can learn from my mistakes and my successes.” Hurley competed collegiately at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., where he served as team captain for three seasons before graduating in 1998. After completing a military commitment in the U.S. Army, Hurley enrolled in graduate school at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., serving as a graduate assistant swimming coach for two seasons while completing a master’s degree in exercise, fitness and health promotion. While at George Mason, Hurley also coached several club and youth teams in Northern Virginia. Hurley serves as the chair of the South Dakota Masters Swimming branch and is a member of the U.S. Masters Swimming organization.
2 Swimming & Diving
Zach Hawley is in his second season with the South Dakota State swimming and diving teams as diving coach. A native of Omaha, Neb., Hawley competed at the University of North Dakota from 2004-2008, where he qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships in diving four times. He then went on to become assistant diving coach at UND the past two seasons. Prior to competing at North Dakota, he coached club teams and gave diving lessons in Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Forks for a combined nine years. During the summer of 2010, he was a guest coach at the University of Missouri and University of Texas diving camps, while also working as an observer at the Olympic Diving Training Center in Indianapolis. Hawley was a high diver for Mirage Entertainment from 20052009, which entailed stunts such as high diving from 70 feet into nine feet of water, lighting himself on fire and diving from 30 feet, clown diving, acting, teaching divers how to high dive, as well as synchronize dives. Hawley is working toward his master’s degree at South Dakota State.
• SDSU Men’s Swimming & Diving Season Preview • The 2011-12 South Dakota State men’s swimming and diving team looks to improve on its third-place Summit League finish last season with a squad filled with underclassmen. The Jacks return three seniors after losing five seniors from last year. The team has nine newcomers including eight freshman. “It simply means we have a strong, younger team that will need to count on the leadership of the older group. The upperclassmen will be mentoring the younger ones in all facets of the program,” said head coach Brad Erickson. Erickson will look to sophomores Chris Schreier and Phil Albu to lead after having outstanding freshman seasons. Schreier had 21 total victories in his freshman campaign, eight school records (four individually) and was named Summit League swimmer of the week twice. Schreier won the 200 butterfly at the Summit League Championships. “Both had a great championship meet, with Chris becoming our firt Summit League Champion. This not only gives us young talent and leadership, but also gives our men’s team credibility as an upper level Summit League team.” Another standout freshman from last year was Phil Albu who competed in backstroke and medley relay events. Albu set school records in the 50 freestyle, 100 and 200 backstroke. He was also part of three school record relays. On the diving side, Brad Schoreit returns who broke his school record in the 3-meter dive last year. Transfer Connor Florand joins the diving squad after competiting at Minnesota State Univesity his freshman year. Florand was a Division II All-American diver. Freshman Wil Hogue could make an immediate impact for the men’s team in the sprint freestyle. “He unofficially set a school record in the 50 freestyle at our intrasquad meet, and should be one of the top top sprinters in the conference.” The mix of youth and experience will bode well for SDSU and give motivation for both sides. SDSU has always stayed steady or improved on their Summit League finishes each year they have been in the league and this

• SDSU Swimming & Diving Preview • After finishing runner-up last year, the women’s swimming and diving team looks to climb up one more spot this year to claim the Summit League Championship. The Jacks lose four letterwinners from last year including seniors Alex Hoffman and Cassie Kozar. The team returns seven seniors and has six newcomers including four freshman. “We have a great returning team that knows what to expect, both for the regular season and the championship season. We have a larger senior class, which mean we can develop several leaders that will impact our younger athletes,” said head coach Brad Erickson. Seniors Jessica Ferley and Ashley Valdez will lead the way for the Jacks. Ferley has excelled in freestyle and backstroke events, while Valdez has done the same in the butterfly. Freshman Andrea Budahl had an outstanding year for the Jacks in freestyle events. Budahl had twelve total victories last year. She broke the school record in the 1000 freestyle and was a member of the 800 freestyle relay. “Andrea had a great freshman year. She worked extremely hard in practices, and her championship meet showed the rewards for all her hard work. It should set up a great career for her.” One of the biggest holes that SDSU will have to fill is the loss of Alex Hoffman who ended her career with 53 wins and was a part nine school records. A freshman that could make an immediate impact is Samantha Fossum. “Samantha Fossum will be a great addition to the women’s program. She is good in all distances of freestyle from the 50 to the 1650. She also has a great work ethic and is eager to learn from our senior class. Even with the young team, Erickson sees no reason why the Jacks should take a step back. The Summit League Championships are Feb. 15-18 in Rochester, Michigan.
ASHLEY VALDEZ will help lead the Jackrabbit women’s squad this season.

Dr. David L. Chicoine • President David L. Chicoine, Ph.D., became the 19th president of South Dakota State University on January 1, 2007. He is the third alumnus to serve as president of the institution. Dr. Chicoine has a long association with intercollegiate athletics, and recently was appointed to a four-year term on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group. Chicoine also will serve as chair of the President’s Council for The Summit League — SDSU’s conference home for 18 of its 21 varsity sports — during the 2011-12 academic year, after filling the role of vice chair the last two years. Previously, Chicoine served as the faculty representative to the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served as chair of the Budget and Finance Committee for the Big Ten Conference for nine years of his 11-year term. Duing his tenure at South Dakota State, Chicoine has directed the creation of a comprehensive strategic plan that has outlined four core goals: • Enhance academic excellence and strengthen scholarship and artistic activities; • Foster economic growth, vibrant communities, and a sustainable environment; • Expand the reach of the university through engagement, technology, and globalization; • Establish a sustainable financial resource base. Dr. Chicoine brought more than 30 years of experience in higher education with the University of Illinois to his role as president of SDSU. He is a nationally recognized economist, specializing in public finance, taxation, and rural economics. His higher education administrative experience includes service as Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Dean of the College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, at the University of Illinois. As vice president at the University of Illinois, he restructured the university’s technology licensing offices, reaching new milestones each year; launched the university’s early stage capital and business development services company, IllinoisVENTURES, LLC, that supported start-up projects, securing special state and university funding for operations and pre-seed investing and facilitated the creation of the $26.5 million early stage Illinois Emerging Technologies Fund; and he oversaw the expansion of research parks and incubators at the university’s Urbana-Champaign and Chicago campuses. He has co-authored four books, 12 book chapters and more than 100 invited and/or peer reviewed academic journal articles. Dr. Chicoine served as an advisor to the Illinois General Assembly on tax issues, farmland property tax assessments, public finance and rural economic issues. He served as a member of the Illinois Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors, and was a member of the board of the Illinois State Treasurer’s Technology Development Fund. He currently is a tenured faculty member in the SDSU Department of Economics, where he has been recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus. Dr. Chicoine is a graduate of SDSU with a B.S. in agribusiness in 1969, and the University of Delaware where he received an M.S. in agricultural economics in 1971. In 1978 he received an M.A. in economics from Western Illinois University, and in 1979 he completed his Ph.D. in agricultural economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The president and his wife, Marcia, live in Woodbine Cottage on the SDSU campus. Their family includes son, Joshua, a Chicago-based musician; daughter-in-law Laura Ellsworth; granddaughter Sylvie; and their late son, Jason.
Justin Sell • Director of Athletics Justin Sell has moved Jackrabbit Athletics forward in a number of areas of its Division I pursuits since being introduced as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University on May 7, 2009. At South Dakota State, Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21-sport Division I varsity athletics program. Eighteen SDSU teams compete in The Summit League, while football competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision, and wrestling is a member of the Western Wrestling Conference. Women’s equestrian competes under the Varsity Equestrian banner. During his first two years, the Jackrabbits displayed success across the board, winning both the Summit League Commissioner’s Cup — the league’s all-sports championship — and the Summit League Sportsmanship Award during the 2010-11 school year. Individually, SDSU has claimed back-to-back Summit League regular season titles in men’s cross country, as well as regular season league titles in women’s soccer (2009) and baseball (2010). In addition, the women’s basketball team won Summit League postseason tournament titles in both 2010 and 2011, and the Jackrabbit football team reached the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs for the first time in 2009. Sell also has implemented aggressive marketing and fundraising initiatives which resulted in record average attendance for football during the 2009 season, as well as the highest number of donors and dollars donated to the Jackrabbit Club. In the classroom, Jackrabbit student-athletes have excelled, posting a cumulative 3.288 grade-point average during the 2010-11 academic year. The Jackrabbit women’s basketball team led all Division I teams for the fourth time in six years with a team GPA of 3.666 during the 2010-11 season. Several other Jackrabbit squads qualified for team academic awards, including the Jackrabbit football team, which garnered its third consecutive Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Academic Team Championship Trophy with a team GPA of 3.014. • About SDSU •
With a near-record enrollment of 12,725 students in the fall of 2011, South Dakota State University is the state’s largest institution of higher education. EARLY HISTORY Located in Brookings, SDSU was authorized in 1881 by the Territorial Legislative Assembly and serves as the state’s land-grant institution. Territorial Council member John O’Brien Scobey, failing to obtain the penitentiary for Brookings, managed to secure Dakota Agricultural College for his city. Although allocations fell short of the actual cost, the school was able to open in the fall of 1884 because the president, George Lilley, was willing to advance $500 — one-third of his salary — to finish three rooms in the new Central Building. In 1887, the Agricultural Experiment Station was established under the federal Hatch Act and linked to the University to conduct research that concerned agriculture and the home. The Cooperative Extension Service was added in 1914 through the Smith-Lever Act. During the first year of operation, only preparatory classes were held. College classes started in 1885 with five teachers, 17 freshman and 61 preparatory students. Growth was slow and erratic for many years, but by the turn of the 20th century there were 242 students. By 1990, enrollment topped more than 9,000 students. Today, students from all 50 states and more than 40 nations attend SDSU. More than 70,000 degrees have been granted since the college was chartered in 1881.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY features an 18-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. Over the past five years, the average placement rate at SDSU has been 95 percent, with placement in selected majors like pharmacy and engineering approaching 100 percent.
COLLEGES ESTABLISHED The structure of the college became more complex as enrollments increased. The first nine chairs of instruction established in 1884 included agriculture, science, mathematics,

English, modern languages, military tactics, veterinary science, practical business, political and domestic economy, and music. By 1907, the year the name of the institution was changed to South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, there were 22 departments on campus. In 1964, when “State College” was renamed South Dakota State University, there were six colleges; today degrees are offered through these eight colleges: • Agricultural and Biological Sciences • Arts and Sciences • Education and Human Sciences • Engineering • General Studies • Nursing • Pharmacy • Graduate School • Honors College SDSU also offers degree programs through the University Center in Sioux Falls. Evening, RDTN, Internet and off-campus courses are coordinated through the Office of Academic Affairs and Outreach. (continued on next page)

top 10 small ornamental gardens in the nation. It is also recognized as an All-American Display Garden, one of only 13 in the nation. In 1993, McCrory Gardens was designated an All-American Judging Garden to conduct research on annual flowers. In 1982, the area north of the formal garden was dedicated to the planting and testing of ornamental trees and shrubs. The 45-acre site was designated the South Dakota State Arboretum in 1988. Perhaps South Dakota State’s most recognizable landmark is the 165-foot Coughlin Campanile, the state’s largest chimes tower. A climb of 179 steps leads to a panoramic view of the city. The statuesque structure on the west end of campus was a $65,000 gift from 1909 engineering graduate Charles Coughlin, who later went on to become head of the Briggs & Stratton Corporation. Coughlin laid the campanile’s cornerstone on June 10, 1929. Since then, its chimes have called students to classes with the famous Westminster peals. An alumni-sponsored project to restore the campanile was completed in the summer of 2001. Adjacent to the campanile, Coolidge-Sylvan Theatre has provided a restful, green haven for students since its dedication by President Calvin Coolidge in September 1927. Over the years the outdoor amphiteater has
been the site of concerts, graduations and inaugurations for university presidents. Woodbine Cottage, the home of the university president, is a charming example of Queen Anne architecture. Built in 1887 by South Dakota Agricultural College’s second president, Dr. Lewis McLouth, the home is crowned by multiple roof lines. The house also has served as a women’s dormitory, music hall and infirmary. STATE’S LARGEST LIBRARY The Hilton M. Briggs Library, the state’s largest, was opened in 1977 and joined South Dakota’s statewide automated library network in 1988. Through the library, users have access to holdings from all 10 of the state’s libraries, including official documents and more than 1 million other holdings at Briggs. THE BROOKINGS COMMUNITY Today, Brookings is a growing community of about 18,700 people. Located 20 miles west of the Minnesota border and 50 miles north of Sioux Falls in east-central South Dakota, Brookings is situated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and Interstate 29. The community also is home to several recognizable companies including Rainbow Play Systems, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M), Larson Manufacturing, and Daktronics, a leading manufacturer of scoreboards and display systems.
