sDsu presiDent: Dr. DaviD l. chicoine
A 1969 graduate of South Dakota State University, David L. Chicoine became the third alumnus to sit in the South Dakota State University president’s office when he took office on Jan. 1, 2007. The 19th president in school history met his wife, Marcia, whom he spotted in an English class to which he claims perfect attendance—after he noticed her there first, of course. President Chicoine spent the majority of the next 30 years away from South Dakota State working in higher education at the University of Illinois, where he held administrative posts, including Vice President of Technology and Eco-
nomic Development and Dean of the College of Agriculture. While vice president at the University of Illinois, President Chicoine helped launch IllinoisVENTURES, LLC, a seed and early-stage technology investment firm. He also reached new milestones each year in restructuring the university’s technology licensing offices. As its dean, President Chicoine transformed the College of Agriculture, leaving it with seven academic departments and an Information Technology unit in place of the previous 14 administrative units. He raised $134 million in private gifts (surpassing the campaign’s goal of $115 million) and increased the endowment to $60 million. Of the eight siblings in President Chicoine’s family, five attended State, including President
Chicoine and his brother Jeff, who finished school here the year before him. Justin Sell joined the Jackrabbit staff on May 7, 2009 as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University. "I love working as part of a team, and that's exactly how we work at SDSU," Sell said. "From President Chicoine, to the faculty and staff, administration, donors and fans, we all work together for the benefit of South Dakota State University and Jackrabbit Athletics." Sell oversees the Jackrabbits' 21-sport Division I varsity athletics program. Eighteen SDSU teams compete in The Summit League, while football competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision and wrestling competes as a member of the Western Wrestling Conference. Athletically, the Jackrabbits claimed a total of 10 regular and postseason league championships in five different sports since 2009-10. That success earned SDSU The Summit League Commissioner's Cup all-sports trophy following the 2010-11 season, after a runner-up finish the year before. Also in 2010-11, SDSU earned the league's Sportsmanship Award, an award voted upon by their peers. 2013-14 SEASON PREVIEW
As the South Dakota State equestrian team enters the third year of the Megan Rossiter era, they prepare for another season of change. In her first season, Rossiter’s Jackrabbits stopped competing in International Horse Show Association events to focus exclusively on National Collegiate Equestrian Association events. A year after shifting the focus to NCEA, and a year removed from their last visit, the Jackrabbit western team returned to NCEA Nationals in 2012, only to fall to Kansas State in the opening round. Last year in 2013, the hunt seat team joined the western squad at NCEA Nationals for the first time ever, and in another series of firsts, both squads advanced to the second round. The western squad rode to a 5-3 win over UT-Martin, while the hunt seat riders tied TCU 4-4, but completed the upset win in a tiebreaker. More changes take effect this season when the two disciplines combine to form one team, which Rossiter thinks benefits the Jackrabbits, and gives them a chance top last season’s success. “Our hunt seat riders performed well last year when we needed strong rides in every event to get our bigger wins, like the win against top-ranked Georgia,” Rossiter said. “We won’t know until we’re able to start competing some of the freshman how strong we can be this year, however we’re confident in the athletes we recruited. Advancing as a total team helps us, and makes us stronger as a whole than some of the other teams we compete against. I’m excited for the change.” That much improved hunt seat team lost four seniors to graduation, including NCEA Honorable Mention All-American Lauren Kerr, and three more that rode at NCEA Nationals last season, but still returns a good group riders. “In the hunt seat events, our strong returning athletes include Santana Wright and Jordan Goodall,” Rossiter said. “We’ll also depend heavily on freshman Natalie Howard and Blair Julia Wright.”
Jackrabbit senior LAURA DUNLAVY competed in all 15 western events in 2012-13 as a junior, posting a 12-3 record on her way to earning NCEA All-American honors
Wright rode in both fences and flat in all 16 events last season as a junior, posting a 5-11 mark over fences, with one MVP, and an even 8-8 mark on the flat, with a trio of MVP honors. She also represented the Jackrabbits at the prestigious Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Fla., in February. Goodall gained valuable experience last year in both hunt seat events, making her best rides over fences, posting a 5-7 mark as a sophomore. Senior Laura Dunlavy earned NCEA All-American honors in reining last year as a junior, and leads a young and talented group of Jackrabbit western riders that lost three experienced horsemanship riders, but only one reiner. I expect another solid year out of seniors Dunlavy and Shelby Webb, who both put together standout junior seasons,” Rossiter said of her western team. “Danielle Baker played a key role last year, even after we switched over into the reining. Depending on where we need her this year, Baker may be our

only athlete to compete in both the reining and horsemanship.” After the late switch, Baker went posted a 3-7 mark in reining after posting a 4-3 mark in seven meets in the horsemanship ring. Dunlavy competed in all 15 western competitions last year, posting an impressive 12-3 mark. A skilled athlete and rider, Raivenne Scott rode well in her freshman year, posting a 5-10 mark with an MVP to her credit, so coming back her sophomore year with some more confidence and experience in collegiate competition should pave the way for further success in 2013-14. Rossiter expects both Webb and sophomore Lexus Hoffman to play key roles in the horsemanship ring. Webb led all SDSU horsemanship riders with an 84 mark last year, while Hoffman compiled a respectable 5-6-1 mark in just her first year of collegiate riding. After riding in an intrasquad scrimmage on Sept. 13-14 at the DeHaan Equestrian Center, the Jackrabbits open the season at the Willis Invitational, hosted by Baylor, on Sept. 22-23, with shows against UT-Martin, New Mexico State and the host Bears on the slate. “Last year we started out the season with three straight losses against Texas A&M and Oklahoma State at home and Kansas State on the road, and competing against those teams just made us ride harder and better, and really prepared us for the rest of the season,” Rossiter said of last year’s start. “This year we start our season at the Willis Invitational with three meets in one weekend. It’s a great way to start the season, however it’ll be tough with a young team.” The Jacks ride in the first of their five scheduled meets at home on Oct. 19, and then end the regular season by hosting the Independent Championships on March 28-29 at the DeHaan Center before closing the season at the NCEA National Championships on April 17-19 in Waco, Texas.

THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE EQUESTRIAN ASSOCIATION
HISTORY In 1998, the NCAA classified equestrian as an emerging sport. At that time, six teams (Auburn, Fresno State, Georgia, Oklahoma State, South Carolina and Texas A&M) participated in the sport. Today, 22 colleges and universities offer equestrian as a varsity sport, and more continue to add the program each year. The teams compete in a head-to-head format, where a rider from each team competes on the same horse. The rider earning the highest score on that particular horse wins the point for their team. At the end of the competition, the team with the most points wins the competition. A random draw determines the horse and rider match-up. Prior to their competition ride, each competitor gets a four-minute warm-up (five minute for reining) to familiarize themselves with the horse and prepare for their competition ride. This format of competition was developed to level the playing field between riders and to allow each rider the same opportunity on the same horse. There is only one elite level of competition for the four events. The National Collegiate Equestrian Association was created to advance the sport of Equestrian from emerging to championship status with the NCAA by promoting the benefits of Equestrian to potential institutions, riders, parents, horse industry professionals and sponsors while developing the rules and format of competition. Waco, Texas currently hosts The National Collegiate Equestrian Association Championships, where 12 teams earn a chance to compete. The NCEA Selection Committee invites these teams based on their win/loss record throughout the season. The NCEA Championships are made possible with the help of generous sponsors, volunteers and donors of current universities and local horse trainers that contribute competition horses, tack and horse transport. Two nationally recognized and carded judges in both hunt seat and western travel to Texas to judge the three days of competition. More than 200 student-athletes from across the country compete at the championships. Many people within the horse industry united together to advance the sport of equestrian to full NCAA championship status. In order to attain this goal and hold an NCAA sponsored equestrian national championship, there must be 40 Division I and or Division II schools that sponsor equestrian at their institution.
MISSION • To provide amateur equestrian student-athletes the opportunity to compete in a collegiate national championship event • To promote for equal collegiate opportunities for female athletes through collegiate level equestrian competition • To assist in the development of amateur equestrian student-athletes through collegiate level equestrian competition • To promote the advancement of equestrian from emerging to championship status with the NCAA • To generate growth of and interest in equestrian activity via the marketing, promotion and publicity of sport benefits to universities, riders, prospective student-athletes, parents, horse industry professionals and sponsors • To support the enhancement of participating institutions who offer varsity level collegiate equestrian programs • To preserve the integrity of the sport through ongoing rule and format development

2013 NCEA NATIONALS
The Jackrabbit equestrian team made history in 2013, when both the western and hunt seat squads qualified for NCEA Nationals. In their fifth appearance at the national meet, the SDSU western squad won for the first time at nationals, defeating UT-Martin by a 5-3 score to advance to the second round, where they fell to Kansas State, which went on to earn reserve national champion honors in western. In their first-ever appearance at NCEA Nationals, the Jackrabbit hunt seat team scored a huge upset win over TCU in the first round by winning the tiebreaker by a 1,107-1,022 score. The hunt seat squad fell to eventual national champion Auburn in the second round.

The South Dakota State Equestrian team is always looking for quality horses to lease or accept as donations for the program. Completion of the DeHaan Equestrian Center in 2008 more than tripled the team's previous training facilities. At nearly 26,000 square feet, the $3.6 million climate-controlled facility features an indoor riding arena, 41 stalls, areas for grooming, washing and preparing the horses, as well as separate on-site work areas for veterinarians and farriers. The DeHaan Equestrian Center property consists of a total of 160 acres, with approximately 35 acres of fenced paddocks where horses receive daily turnout.

SDSU utilizes horses from both western and hunt seat disciplines. The hunt seat horses consist of hunters, jumpers and horses with backgrounds in eventing. Hunt seat horses with training and show experience on the flat and/or jumping over three feet are preferred. On the western side, SDSU looks for horses with training and show experience in either horsemanship or reining. In order for the riders to prepare for the level of competition in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association, SDSU can only accept horses that meet these levels of training and experience. If leasing or donating your horse to the program is something that interests you, please contact SDSU Head Equestrian Coach Megan Rossiter by phone at (605) 688-4506 or by email at Megan.Rossiter@sdstate.edu
NATHELLE AND LAWRENCE DEHAAN EQUESTRIAN CENTER
Located along the U.S. Highway 14 Bypass north and east of the SDSU campus, the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center became the new home for Jackrabbit Equestrian at South Dakota State University when it opened in the fall of 2008. Dedicated on Oct. 15, 2008, project benefactor Nathelle DeHaan’s avid support of South Dakota State University and love for horses grew to make the SDSU Equestrian program and the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center a reality. A 1937 graduate of South Dakota State, Nathelle DeHaan provided the initial gift to build the facility. For nearly five decades, she and her late husband, Lawrence played an active role in the local horse community, traveling to judge and show quarter horses. Nathaelle DeHann died on Jan. 24, 2011 at the age of 96, but not before she realized her dream of seeing the day when young women could attend college, compete at the highest level and create experiences and memories that last a lifetime. “The Equestrian program provides a wonderful opportunity for young women,” Nathelle said at the dedication of the facility. “I’m excited about the future of the SDSU Equestrian team.” Completion of the building in the spring of 2008 more than tripled the team’s previous training facilities. At nearly 26,000
Aerial view of the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center square feet, the $3.6 million climate-controlled facility features an indoor riding arena, 42 stalls with additional areas for grooming, washing and preparing the horses, as well as separate on-site work areas for veterinarians and farriers. In addition, the additional area for the horses, the building houses a team locker room equipped with a study area. “The DeHaan Equestrian Center is a beautiful and thoroughly modern facility, equal to any collegiate equestrian center in the country,” SDSU Head Equestrian Coach
Megan Rossiter said. “A facility this size allows us to provide a first-class practice and competition venue for our student-athletes and spectators.” The additional space allows the team’s roster to eventually grow to 60 riders while continuing to offer the NCAA-maximum 15 full scholarships. The proximity of the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center to the main SDSU campus makes it unique in the collegiate equestrian ranks and should allow for the equestrian program to become further ingrained in the SDSU Athletic Department as it continues to mature. Once the SDSU Foundation completes fund-raising for Phase I, planning begins for the second phase of the project. Phase II includes the addition of a stall barn, a large outdoor riding arena, viewing rooms, coaching offices, a meeting room and trophy room. “Completion of phase II would allow the program to continue attracting top-level student-athletes from around the country and help us enhance the growth of our equestrian program,” Rossiter said. For more information on the SDSU Equestrian team, or to make a donation for scholarship support or facilities, please contact the Jackrabbit development office by phone at (605) 697-7475.

JACKRABBIT EQUESTRIAN HISTORY
A new era of athletic competition at South Dakota State University began in the fall of 2005 as the Jackrabbits fielded their first varsity equestrian team. SDSU currently offers majors in pre-veterinary and animal science within its College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, while offering coursework in equine studies. The program formed in the spring of 2004, making equestrian the 21st varsity sport at SDSU, 10 sports for men and 11 for women. FACILITIES
South Dakota State University provides its student-athletes the opportunity to train and compete in some of the finest facilities in The Summit League. Within the past five years, SDSU added or enhanced several Jackrabbit athletic facilities, including: • Construction of new on-campus baseball and softball competition fields; • Construction of a new equestrian center; • Installation of new video boards and scoreboards at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium and Frost Arena; • Completion of a practice soccer field SDSU further enhanced its student-athlete facilities in 2009 with the completion of the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center. Located in the north end zone of Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center houses an academic center for use by all Jackrabbit student-athletes, as well as new locker room and training facilities for the SDSU football team. Construction on the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center marks the first stage of a master plan to dramatically modernize athletic facilities at SDSU. The $6 million donated by Sioux Falls bankers Dana Dykhouse and T. Denny Sanford in the fall of 2007 set in motion the construction of the first major athletic building on campus since Frost Arena in 1973. Future additions to the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center, which would be included in a comprehensive athletic facilities master plan, would house offices, meeting rooms and locker facilities for all outdoor sports at South Dakota State University.
The Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center opened in the fall of 2009
SDSU added state of the art video scoreboards in Frost Arena in 2005 EXCELLENCE
With an enrollment of 12,554 students in the fall of 2013, South Dakota State University remains the state’s largest institution of higher education. Students from all 50 states and more than 40 nations attend SDSU, a public, land-grant institution. SDSU granted over 80,000 degrees since its charter in 1881, with degrees offered through these nine colleges: • Agriculture and Biological Sciences • Arts and Sciences • Education and Counseling • Engineering • Family and Consumer Sciences • General Studies • Nursing • Pharmacy • Graduate School SDSU also offers degree programs through the University Center in Sioux Falls. The Office of Continuing and Extended Education coordinates evening, RDTN, Internet and off-campus courses. SDSU offers more than 200 majors, minors and options, with more than 2,500 different course offerings. Students can choose from more than 200 clubs and organizations active on campus. Master’s degrees can be earned in more than 30 areas, with doctorates available in eight fields. SDSU maintains a student-faculty ratio of 18:1. The University as a whole employs more than 2,000 people, with a total operating budget of nearly $288 million in fiscal year 2011.

PROGRESSIVE
South Dakota State continues to experience unprecedented growth, both in enrollment and building projects. Projects recently completed or currently under way include: • The $48 million, 144,000-square-foot Avera Health and Science Center • Daktronics Engineering Hall, a 30,000-square-foot building that houses an expansion within the College of Engineering • The $6 million Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center • A $7.8 million campus wellness center The Community Wellness Center opened in the fall of 2008
• Union Dining Expansion, a 20,000 square foot expansion to the student union that adds 350 new seats and three nationally branded dining options at a cost of $8.3 million • Four new residence halls currently under construction; Southwest Hall, Southeast Hall, Northeast Hall and Honors Hall add housing for more than 800 freshman and sophomores at a cost of $45.7 million For more information on the new residence halls and the Student Union dining expansion, log onto www.sdstate.edu/campus/expansion

The SDSU Foundation’s “It Starts With State” campaign, a comprehensive fund-raising initiative designed to raise $200 million by the end of the 2012, with pledges and payments extending beyond 2012, continues to identify additional facility projects and enhancements to academic programs. Every college, department and unit stands to benefit from “It Starts With State” campaign. The impact of scholarships, endowments, facility enhancements, professorships, endowed chairs and the Funds for Excellence reaches every academic college and program on campus. INNOVATIVE
The Innovation Campus at South Dakota State University marks the state’s first and only university-affiliated research park. Located on 125 acres just east of campus, it provides an environment that fosters partnerships among the University, business, government and the community to grow the sciences and technology-based economy. SDSU boasts the highest percentage of undergraduates involved in research of any South Dakota public university. SDSU is large enough to offer competitive research opportunities, yet small enough to foster student faculty learning opportunities.
The first building of the Innovation Campus opened in 2008
Major areas of research at SDSU include: • Engineering and technology research into photovoltaic devices, nanotechnology, materials science, wind power, surface transportation systems, signal and image processing, water treatment, computer sciences, software engineering and computational science and statistics • Agricultural sciences research on crops and livestock, including food manufacturing, bio-based energy, economics and horticulture • Management and conservation of natural resources • Health sciences, nutritional sciences and wellness research programs in pharmaceutical sciences, nutrition and exercise physiology • Renewable energy research develops bio-based energy technologies, while promoting diversification and environmental sustainability of America’s agriculture • The federal government awarded SDSU and six other universities $69 million in federal funds over the next five years to serve as Vanguard centers for the National Children’s Study. The NCS studies more than 100,000 children from across the country from conception to age 21

THE JACKRABBITS
South Dakota State offers 21 varsity sports with Jackrabbit teams competing at the NCAA Division I level. Football competes in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, while 18 sports compete in The Summit League. Wrestling competes in the Western Wrestling Conference, while equestrian currently competes in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association.
Evolution of a Nickname Two theories exist as to how and why SDSU’s athletic teams became known as the Jackrabbits. Most believe that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College. Many believe that a reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, wrote that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname came in “The Jackrabbit”, SDSU’s yearbook. A poem in the 1907 yearbook puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called “The Jackrabbit” because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, fans knew the school athletic teams as the Barn Yard Cadets, which made sense, because the school went by the name of South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.
The Jackrabbit can run at speeds of 30-to-35 miles per hour, with bursts up to 45, making it the second fastest animal in North America, second only to the pronghorn antelope, which can run at speeds up to 60 miles per hour. Properly speaking, Jackrabbits should not be called rabbits but hares, with longer feet and longer ears than rabbits. Most hares live in open country, whereas rabbits - like cottontails - live in brushy habitats. Jackrabbits can grow up to two feet long; weigh from six to nine pounds, with ears up to eight inches long. Hares do not eat meat; they eat tender herbs in the summer and woody twigs and bark in the winter.

COMMUNITY
Located in Brookings, a growing community of about 22,000 people, South Dakota State University sits 20 miles west of the Minnesota border and 50 miles north of Sioux Falls in east-central South Dakota, Brookings sits at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and Interstate 29. Brookings and the surrounding area feature tremendous recreational and cultural opportunities. The city features a vibrant downtown area with shopping, nightlife opportunities and a new interactive children’s museum. Brookings also maintains an extensive park and recreational trail system, with two 18-hole golf courses, and serves as a gateway to first-class fishing and hunting areas throughout eastern South Dakota. South Dakota State University also houses several facilities, including museums and gardens, which highlight South Dakota history and heritage. The South Dakota Art Museum houses several collections, including early Sioux Indian tribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens. The State Agricultural Heritage Museum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota. The 70-acre McCrory Gardens and South Dakota Arboretum, located south and east of campus, provide a beautiful setting for area residents and tourists to enjoy a stroll through the radiant colors and fragrances of one of the top-10 small ornamental gardens in the nation. Adding to its honors, McCrory Gardens earned the distinction of being named an All-American Display Garden, one of only 13 in the nation. The community houses several recognizable companies including Rainbow Play Systems, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M), Larson Manufacturing and Daktronics, a leading manufacturer of scoreboards and display systems.
The South Dakota Art Museum is free and open to the public
McCrory Gardens honors Professor S.A. McCrory, who headed the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences from 1947 until his death in 1964

We committ ourselves to providing each and every student-athlete with a comprehensive collegiate experience that ranks second to none. Every decision that guides our program is made with the student-athlete in mind. Is athletic achievement important? Yes, because it’s the fundamental purpose of the student-athlete experience. Is Social Responsibility a vital component? Yes, we expect to contribute to the well-being of our campus, community and state. How about Positive Student-Athlete Experiences and Competitive Success? Those also define our program as an integral component to the student athlete’s growth. That is what student-centered means, and why our vision is:
