HEAD COACH MEGAN ROSSITER HOMETOWN

DePere, Wis. EDUCATION

B.S. Agriculture – Murray State, 2000 M.S. Animal Science – Oklahoma State, 2008 EXPERIENCE

Head Coach – South Dakota State, June 2011-present Trainer and Instructor – Drake Johnson Reining Horses, Wray, Colo., 2007-11 Assistant Coach – Oklahoma State, 2003-07 Graduate Assistant Coach – Oklahoma State, 2001-03 Megan Rossiter took over the Jackrabbit equestrian program on June 6, 2011, after spending four years at Drake Johnson Reining Horses in Wray, Colo., where she assisted in instructing riders, training and showing reining horses. "I really enjoy working with the young women on the equestrian team," Rossiter said. "Being involved in a program with such great support from the administration, staff and community makes this a great place to live and work." Now in her fourth season with the Jackrabbits, Rossiter enters the season with a 12-20 overall record, and with a pair of NCEA National Championships appearances in both 2012 and in 2013, when the Jackrabbits made history by becoming the first team in school history to advance at nationals. In her first season in 2011-12, Rossiter turned the team’s focus from NCEA and IHSA competitions to just NCEA meets, which puts more emphasis on the team aspect of the sport. “Some schools compete in both IHSA and NCEA events, and I understand why they do that, but it just didn’t work for our team,” Rossiter said. “For us, we could do both, but couldn’t do both well, so we shifted our focus to NCEA competition only, which works better for our team.” The Jacks posed a 2-5 overall record in her first season, with a 1-1 mark in hunt seat only meets and an 0-2

mark in western only meets. The western squad qualified for the NCEA National Championships, but fell to Kansas State by a 6-2 score in the opening round. In just her second year at SDSU, the Rossiter-led Jackrabbits finished the season with a 7-6 overall record, with a 1-2 mark in hunt seat meets and a 1-1 mark in western meets. The western team again advanced to NCEA Nationals, and for the first time in school history, so did the hunt seat team. Both squads made the most of their trip to Waco, Texas, for nationals by downing their first round opponents. The western squad rode to a 5-3 win over UTMartin in the opening round before falling to Kansas State in the quarterfinals. The hunt seat riders captured a win over TCU in the first round on raw score, but fell to eventual national champion Auburn in the quarterfinals. No stranger to the college coaching ranks, Rossiter began her collegiate coaching career at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., where she helped coach the western team as a graduate assistant under head coach Larry Sanchez from 2001 until 2003, when she accepted a newly created assistant coaching position. During her time on staff at OSU, the Cowgirl western squad won the Varsity Equestrian National Championships in 2003, 2004 and 2006, and the reserve national championship in 2005. In addition to Varsity Equestrian, the Cowgirls attained

much success in IHSA competition. Rossiter-coached riders won 33 individual Zone championships, 18 Regional championships and seven national titles. The Cowgirls as a team also won Zone and Regional Championships in 2004, and the IHSA reserve western national title in 2002. The 2013-14 Jackrabbits struggled out of the gate, but finished the season strong, by capturing the Independent Tournament Championship to finish with a 3-9 overall mark. Rossiter began her involvement with horses in her hometown of DePere, Wis., where she grew up competing in the AQHA circuits, congress and in the AQHYA World Show. She then competed as an intercollegiate rider in both hunt seat and western events at Murray State University in Murray, Ky., where she participated in the National Student Exchange at New Mexico State University as a junior in 1998. During that year at NMSU, she competed with the Aggie equestrian team under then head coach Larry Sanchez. Rossiter graduated from Murray State in 2000 with Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture with a concentration in equine science, and then earned a Master of Science Degree in Animal Science, with an emphasis on equine nutrition, from Oklahoma State University in 2008.

SDSU PRESIDENT: DR. DAVID L. CHICOINE

A 1969 graduate of South Dakota State University, David L. Chicoine became the third alumnus to sit in the South Dakota State University president’s office when he took office on Jan. 1, 2007. The 19th president in school history met his wife, Marcia, whom he spotted in an English class to which he claims perfect attendance—after he noticed her there first, of course. President Chicoine spent the majority of the next 30 years away from South Dakota State working in higher education at the University of Illinois, where he held administrative posts, including Vice President of Technology and Eco-

nomic Development and Dean of the College of Agriculture. While vice president at the University of Illinois, President Chicoine helped launch IllinoisVENTURES, LLC, a seed and early-stage technology investment firm. He also reached new milestones each year in restructuring the university’s technology licensing offices. As its dean, President Chicoine transformed the College of Agriculture, leaving it with seven academic departments and an Information Technology unit in place of the previous 14 administrative units. He raised $134 million in private gifts (surpassing the campaign’s goal of $115 million) and increased the endowment to $60 million. Of the eight siblings in President Chicoine’s family, five attended State, including President

Chicoine and his brother Jeff, who finished school here the year before him. When President Chicoine graduated, he did so alongside former U.S. Senator Tom Daschle and several men and women who work at South Dakota State today. At State, President Chicoine also met longtime friend and colleague Robert Todd, with whom he worked with almost 30 years at the University of Illinois. The president and his wife, Marcia, live in Woodbine Cottage. Their family includes son Joshua, a Chicago-based musician; daughterin-law Laura Ellsworth; granddaughter Sylvie; and their late son Jason. President Chicoine serves as the 19th president of the University and the 17th to live in the historic cottage.

SDSU DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS: JUSTIN SELL

Justin Sell joined the Jackrabbit staff May 7, 2009, as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University, where he oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21-sport Division I athletics program. Under Sell’s leadership, SDSU athletics continues to make strides in athletic competition, in the classroom, in fundraising and in reconnecting with alumni. Athletically, the Jackrabbits claimed 18 regular and postseason league championships in six different sports since 2009-10. That broadbased success has led SDSU to claim The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup allsports trophy three times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14), along with winning both The Summit League’s Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s AllSports Award and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award during the 2013-14 season. SDSU also claimed the Steinbrecher award during the 2012-13 season and earned the league’s Sportsmanship Award, an award voted upon by its peers, during the 2010-11 campaign. In the classroom, Jackrabbit student-athletes continually post a GPA of 3.2 or higher in more than 70 different majors, which led SDSU to winning The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 and 2012-13 academic years and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Academic Award in all six years in the league (2008-13). In January 2011, Sell announced a partnership with Learfield Sports, signing a 10-year deal worth $13 million for SDSU athletics.

Learfield Sports quickly established a Brookings-based entity known as “Jackrabbit Sports Properties” that directs all aspects of the partnership, including managing and selling multimedia and sponsorship rights for South Dakota State Athletics. In addition to the deal with Learfield Sports, Sell directed the implementation of the Letterwinners Club, which provides opportunities for Jackrabbit Athletics to reconnect and stay connected with former student-athletes, while supporting current student-athletes at South Dakota State. In the years to come, Sell wants to continue reconnecting with former Jackrabbit studentathletes and enhancing the athletic facilities while still maintaining success, both in competition, but more importantly, in the classroom. On the facilities front, Sell oversaw the completion of the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center in 2010, and developed the 2025 SDSU Athletic Facilities Master Plan. Additionally, Sell spearheaded efforts to add permanent seating and a press box at Erv Huether Field, chairback seating in both Frost Arena and Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Construction of the indoor facility—the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex—began in August 2013, and finished in the fall of 2014. Lead gifts totaling $12.5 million toward the construction of the new Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, with seating up to 20,000 were received in October 2013. The project began in the fall of 2014, with completion set for the summer of 2016. In total, Sell spearheaded the fundraising efforts to raise more than $57 million in private donations since Aug. 1, 2012, for the Sanford-Jackrabbit Complex and Dana

J. Dykhouse Stadium. Born in Salem, Ore., and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the University of Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked at Villanova University, Syracuse University, The Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events. In the community, Sell serves as a board member of the Brookings Chamber of Commerce, Brookings Convention and Visitor's Bureau, Brookings Friends of Baseball and on the Brookings Health System. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992. Sell and his wife, Jennie, have four children; Abbie, Zach, Josh and Eric.

2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW

Despite a tough season overall, the South Dakota State equestrian team closed the 201314 campaign on a winning note, closing the season with three straight wins, with the final two giving the Jackrabbits the Independent Tournament Championship. “We really need to keep that momentum from last season and carry that over into the 2014-15 season,” head coach Megan Rossiter said. “We lost two meets on raw score last season, and that winning mindset can make the difference between a win and a loss, which can be the difference in making nationals.” Of the 28 riders that competed for the Jacks last season, 23 of them return, 11 hunt seat riders and 12 western riders, including All-American Raivenne Scott, who posted a 10-0-1 overall record last season as a sophomore in reining. Already ranked fourth in all-time reining wins at SDSU, Scott’s 10 wins in 2013-14 represent the second-highest single-season total in school history, all of which played a big part in her earning a chance to ride at the prestigious NRHA Derby Catch Ride in June in Oklahoma City, where she rode to an eighth place finish. “Raivenne rode in all 15 meets as a freshman, and even though she only won five points that year, you could see her potential,” Rossiter said. “We really saw that potential come to fruition last year, as only the second rider in our program’s history to post double-digit wins in a season in any event.” In just her first year on the team, fellow western rider Elizabeth Niewojna tied an SDSU singleseason record last year with eight horsemanship wins, and already sits in a tie for third all-time at SDSU with a pair of MOP rides in her career. She finished the season with an 8-3 overall record and earned a chance to compete at the 2014

Jackrabbit junior RAIVENNE SCOTT posted a 10-0-1 record in reining in 2013-14 as a sophomore, earning All-American honors along the way. She also rode at the prestigious NRHA Derby Catch ride on June 28, in Oklahoma City, where she placed eighth

AQHA Collegiate Horsemanship Challenge on Nov. 19-20 in Oklahoma City, as part of the AQHA World Championship Show. “Winning MOP in your first-ever collegiate meet really builds confidence for the rest of the season, and we saw that last year with Lizzy,” Rossiter said. “She only won one more MOP the rest of the season, but she never stopped riding well, and continued to post high scores for the rest of the season. I think we’ve only scratched the surface of her potential.” Sophomore Blair Julia Wright leads the returning riders on the hunt seat side. She posted a 63-1 record as a freshman on the flat, and earned MOP honors in one meet. She also competed in seven meets over fences, where she looks to im-

prove during her sophomore season. Sophomore Marielle Golden struggled on the flat last season in just three meets, but posted a winning record as a freshman, when she helped the Jackrabbits advance to the second round of NCEA Nationals. Golden did post a winning record last year over fences, and looks to continue being a dual threat for the Jackrabbits in 2014-15, as does senior Jordan Goodall, who also competed on the 201213 squad that advanced at nationals. “We just couldn’t seem to catch a break in hunt seat last year, so I’m not overly worried about that group this year,” Rossiter said. “We return a core group of experienced riders, a number of them who helped us advance at nationals a couple of years ago, so I expect them to rebound nicely and really compete hard for us this year.” While the Jackrabbits do return a great deal of talent, they also lost some of top riders in school history to graduation; riders like Santana Wright in hunt seat and both Laura Dunlavy and Shelby Webb in western. The most prolific rider in SDSU equestrian history, Santana Wright graduated as the all-time leader in wins both on the flat and over fences. She also holds the SDSU record for single-season wins in both events and MOPs in a career in both events. A reining All-American in 2013, Dunlavy holds the SDSU record for reining wins in a season and in a career, and tied for MOP record in a singleseason and career. Webb graduated tied for the school-record for horsemanship wins in a season and ranked second all-time at SDSU for horsemanship wins in a career. HORSE DONATIONS

The South Dakota State Equestrian team is always looking for quality horses to lease or accept as donations for the program. Completion of the DeHaan Equestrian Center in 2008 more than tripled the team's previous training facilities. At nearly 26,000 square feet, the $3.6 million climate-controlled facility features an indoor riding arena, 41 stalls, areas for grooming, washing and preparing the horses, as well as separate on-site work areas for veterinarians and farriers. The DeHaan Equestrian Center property consists of a total of 160 acres, with approximately 35 acres of fenced paddocks where horses receive daily turnout. SDSU utilizes horses from both western and hunt seat disciplines. The hunt seat horses

consist of hunters, jumpers and horses with backgrounds in eventing. Hunt seat horses with training and show experience on the flat and/or jumping over three feet are preferred. On the western side, SDSU looks for horses with training and show experience in either horsemanship or reining. In order for the riders to prepare for the level of competition in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association, SDSU can only accept horses that meet these levels of training and experience. If leasing or donating your horse to the program is something that interests you, please contact SDSU Head Equestrian Coach Megan Rossiter by phone at (605) 688-4506 or by email at Megan.Rossiter@sdstate.edu

HISTORY AND RECORDS

SDSU EQUESTRIAN HISTORY

A new era of athletic competition at South Dakota State began in the fall of 2005 as the Jackrabbits fielded their first varsity equestrian team. Equestrian emerged as a natural fit with SDSU’s status as a land-grant institution with strong ties to agriculture. SDSU currently offers majors in pre-veterinary and animal science within its College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, while offering coursework in equine studies. The program formed in the spring of 2004, making equestrian the 21st varsity sport at SDSU, 10 sports for men and 11 for women. Megan McGee came on board as the program’s first head coach on Aug. 31, 2004, and served in that position through the 2009-10 season. Joe Humphrey joined the coaching staff in the spring of 2005, and took over the head coaching duties on an interim basis from the fall of 2010 through June 2011, when Megan Rossiter took over the program. During the inaugural 2005-06 season, the Jackrabbits put together a schedule that included five head-to-head competitions against some of the top Varsity Equestrian programs in the country, including opening competition Oct. 1, 2005, at Kansas State. The first head-to-head win in program history came on Nov. 20, when the Jacks beat Stephen F. Austin. SDSU filled out its schedule by competing in Intercollegiate Horse Show Association events, something the team did through the 2010-11 season before switching exclusively to varsity equestrian shows. During the 2006-07 season, Kaylee DeVries became the first Jackrabbit rider to qualify for national competition, earning a trip to IHSA Nationals in intermediate equitation on the flat. Over the years, 10 other Jackrabbit riders earned a chance to ride at IHSA Nationals before the program shifted to competing solely at NCEA events in the fall of 2011. Also during the spring of 2007, the Jackrabbit Western squad became the first team SDSU equestrian team to make a national tournament,

For the first time in school history, both the western and hunt seat teams qualified for NCEA Nationals in 2013, and also for the first time, both squads advanced to the second round

when it earned a selection to compete in the Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, Texas. The SDSU equestrian program continues its rise in the collegiate equestrian ranks to this day. Eleven riders qualified for regional competition during the 2007-08 season, with four earning trips to national competition. The 2008-09 season saw 10 Jackrabbit riders qualify for regional events, and a school-record eight riders that moved on to national competition. The Jackrabbit western team boasts a total of five appearances at Varsity Equestrian Nationals, now known as the NCEA National Championships, held annually in Waco, Texas, with the hunt seat squad making its initial appearance at nationals in 2013, when both teams made school history by becoming the first Jackrabbit teams to advance at Nationals. Starting in the 2013-14 season, the NCEA no longer separates teams into hunt seat and western. Although the two disciplines still exist separately, teams win or lose based on a total team score of hunt seat and western teams combined. Additionally, teams can only qualify for NCEA Nationals as one team, meaning that a school’s western and/or hunt seat team can no longer qualify on its own.

The 2007 western team qualified for Varsity Equestrian National Championshps, making them the first equestrian team to qualify for a national event.

In 2011, Jackrabbit reining rider Angela Gebhart made history by becoming the first-ever SDSU rider to earn All-American honors. The Maple Grove, Minn., native posted a 6-1 record in her senior season, with four MOP awards to her credit. Following in Gebhart’s footsteps, Laura Dunlavy got an All-American nod in 2013, also in reining, after posting a school-record 12 wins with just three losses in her junior campaign, with a trio of MOP honors. A native of Cornelius, Ore., Raivenne Scott joined the growing class of reining All-Americans in 2014, and became the youngest to win the honor, when she finished her sophomore season with a 10-0-1 record, with one MOP to earn the award. Helen Lauth earned reining All-American honorable mention in 2012 after going 7-2 on the season. Jessie Miller added an All-American honorable mention selection in 2013 with a 6-3 mark, while Lauren Kerr became the first hunt seat rider to get an All-American honorable mention selection in 2013 with a 6-1 record on the flat. Along with the individual accomplishments, the program picked up a number of team milestones over the years as well; including the programs first win over a ranked team, which came over No. 3 ranked Georgia on Nov. 17, 2013, when the Jacks topped the Bulldogs on raw score. The win over Georgia also propelled the Jackrabbits to their first-ever national rank, as the team went from receiving votes in the National Equestrian Coaches Poll to ranked No. 9 in the nation. Later on in the 2012-13 season, the Jackrabbits made history again by advancing at NCEA Nationals for the first time in school history. The western squad downed UT-Martin in the opening round at nationals before falling to Auburn the second round. That same year, the hunt seat team not only qualified for nationals for the first time, but also edged TCU on raw score to advance to the second round, where they came up short against Kansas State.

NATHELLE AND LAWRENCE DEHAAN EQUESTRIAN CENTER

Located along the U.S. Highway 14 Bypass north and east of the SDSU campus, the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center became the new home for Jackrabbit Equestrian at South Dakota State University when it opened in the fall of 2008. Dedicated on Oct. 15, 2008, project benefactor Nathelle DeHaan’s avid support of South Dakota State University and love for horses grew to make the SDSU Equestrian program and the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center a reality. A 1937 graduate of South Dakota State, Nathelle DeHaan provided the initial gift to build the facility. For nearly five decades, she and her late husband, Lawrence played an active role in the local horse community, traveling to judge and show quarter horses. Nathaelle DeHann died on Jan. 24, 2011 at the age of 96, but not before she realized her dream of seeing the day when young women could attend college, compete at the highest level and create experiences and memories that last a lifetime. “The Equestrian program provides a wonderful opportunity for young women,” Nathelle said at the dedication of the facility. “I’m excited about the future of the SDSU Equestrian team.” Completion of the building in the spring of 2008 more than tripled the team’s previ-

Aerial view of the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center ous training facilities. At nearly 26,000 square feet, the $3.6 million climate-controlled facility features an indoor riding arena, 42 stalls with additional areas for grooming, washing and preparing the horses, as well as separate on-site work areas for veterinarians and farriers. In addition, the additional area for the horses, the building houses a team locker room equipped with a study area. “The DeHaan Equestrian Center is a beautiful and thoroughly modern facility, equal to any collegiate equestrian center

in the country,” SDSU Head Equestrian Coach Megan Rossiter said. “A facility this size allows us to provide a first-class practice and competition venue for our studentathletes and spectators.” The additional space allows the team’s roster to eventually grow to 60 riders while continuing to offer the NCAA-maximum 15 full scholarships. The proximity of the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center to the main SDSU campus makes it unique in the collegiate equestrian ranks and should allow for the equestrian program to become further ingrained in the SDSU Athletic Department as it continues to mature. Once the SDSU Foundation completes fund-raising for Phase I, planning begins for the second phase of the project. Phase II includes the addition of a stall barn, a large outdoor riding arena, viewing rooms, coaching offices, a meeting room and trophy room. “Completion of phase II would allow the program to continue attracting top-level student-athletes from around the country and help us enhance the growth of our equestrian program,” Rossiter said. For more information on the SDSU Equestrian team, or to make a donation for scholarship support or facilities, please contact the Jackrabbit development office by phone at (605) 697-7475.

WELCOME TO SOUTH DAKOTA STATE

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY South Dakota State University is the state’s Morrill Act land-grant university and its largest, most comprehensive institution of higher education. With an enrollment of 12,554 students in the fall of 2013 from all 50 states and 70 countries, students can choose from more than 175 majors, minors and specializations. The institution also offers 29 master’s degree programs, 13 Ph.D. and two professional programs. SDSU grew from 80 acres at its founding in 1881 to a 422-acre campus with facilities valued at more than $381 million. The university owns or leases another 15,000 acres of land for research throughout the state. The university provides a rich academic experience in an environment of inclusion and access through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement that improve the quality of life in South Dakota, the region, the nation and the world. SDSU confers degrees through six colleges: Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Sciences, the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, Nursing and Pharmacy, as well as the Graduate School. Qualified students may enroll in the Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College. The Office of Continuing and Distance Education facilitates distance delivery of credit and noncredit programming, and University Centers in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City offer degree programs and student support services comparable to those offered on the Brookings campus. SDSU Extension and the Agricultural Experiment Station reach all parts of the state. The federally funded North Central Regional Sun Grant Center (focused on developing biobased energy alternatives) and the North Central Agricultural Research Laboratory (the only USDA Agricultural Research Service facility in the state), along with the Northern Plains Biostress Laboratory, the Water and Environmental Engineering Research Center, the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory and the Northeast Research Center near South Shore demonstrate the university’s commitment to purpose-driven research and that supports economic development.

At 165 feet tall, South Dakota State University’s most recognizable landmark, the Coughlin Campanile sits just south of the South Dakota Art Museum

FACILITIES The South Dakota State campus witnessed numerous building projects over the past 10 past years, and the building boom continues into 2014-15. Recent or current construction projects include the Architecture, Mathematics and Engineering Building and an updated Medary Commons. The Architecture, Mathematics and Engineering Building houses several of the most dynamic programs on campus including: • Center for Financial Analytics • Center for Statistics and Biometrics • Center for Computational Science • Senior Design Lab for Mechanical Engineering • Engineering Resource Center Construction of that 60,000-square-foot, $17 million project started in fall 2013 after spending the summer cleaning and then demolishing Solberg Annex and the Industrial Arts Building. The new building’s footprint also extends to the parking lot north of those structures. Set for completion in early 2015 with most of the moving to occur in spring and summer 2015, the first floor houses the mechanical engineering prototyping and design labs and construction and operations management departments as well as shared lab space with architecture. The mathematics and statistics department can be found on the second floor while the third floor houses the architecture department. The formerly known as Medary Commons, the Enrollment Services Center now houses enrollment services, admissions, financial aid, records and registration, and scholarships. Other recently completed projects include: • The 144,000-square-foot Avera Health and Science Center • The 30,000-square-foot Daktronics Engineering Hall • A $7.8 million campus wellness center • Four new residence halls that add housing for more than 800 students • A 20,000 square foot expansion to the student union that adds 350 new seats and three nationally branded dining options

The South Dakota State building boom also includes athletic facilities, which started with the completion of the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center in 2010, and continues with the completion of the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in the fall of 2014 and Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, scheduled for completion in 2016. The multi-use Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex features an indoor practice and competition space of more than 149,000 square feet and a human performance area of nearly 15,000 square feet. The facility also houses one of the only eight-lane, 300-meter tracks in the region, along with 100 yards of soy-based synthetic turf. The building measures 61 feet high at midfield. SDSU broke ground on the facility in August 2013, with the final beam raised in March 2014 and the turf installed in July 2014. Scheduled for completion in time for the 2016 football season, the 2014 South Dakota State Legislature approved the construction of Dana J. Dykhouse on the site of the current Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed the bill into law and then held a ceremonial signing of the bill on May 22 on the field of the current stadium. Plans call for the stadium to seat 18,500-20,000 fans and cost an estimated $65 million, with one-third of the funds coming through private gives and long-term revenue streams, including concessions, suite, loge box and ticket sales. The university secured bonds to finance the final two-thirds of cost. SDSU announced on Oct. 5, 2013, in conjunction with the 100th Hobo Day game at SDSU, lead gifts totaling $12.5 million from Sioux Falls banker Dana Dykhouse and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford. The first phase of construction begins in the fall of 2014 with the east and south stands scheduled for completion in time for the 2015 football season, and the rest of the stadium ready for the 2016 season. INNOVATIVE The Innovation Campus at South Dakota State University marks the state’s first and only university-affiliated research park. Located on 125 acres just east of campus, it provides an environment that fosters partnerships among the University, business, government and the community to grow the sciences and technology-based economy. SDSU boasts the highest percentage of undergraduates involved in research of any South Dakota public university. SDSU is large enough to offer competitive research opportunities, yet small enough to foster student faculty learning opportunities. Major areas of research at SDSU include: • Engineering and technology research into photovoltaic devices, nanotechnology, materials science, wind power, surface transportation systems, signal and image processing, water treatment, computer sciences, software engineering and computational science and statistics

The first building of the Innovation Campus opened in 2008

• Agricultural sciences research on crops and livestock, including food manufacturing, bio-based energy, economics and horticulture • Management and conservation of natural resources • Health sciences, nutritional sciences and wellness research programs in pharmaceutical sciences, nutrition and exercise physiology • Renewable energy research develops bio-based energy technologies, while promoting diversification and environmental sustainability of America’s agriculture • The federal government awarded SDSU and six other universities $69 million in federal funds over the next five years to serve as Vanguard centers for the National Children’s Study. The NCS studies more than 100,000 children from across the country from conception to age 21

THE JACKRABBITS

South Dakota State offers 21 varsity sports with Jackrabbits teams competing at the NCAA Division I level. Football competes in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, while 18 sports compete in The Summit League. Wrestling competes in the Western Wrestling Conference, while equestrian currently competes in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association.

Evolution of a Nickname Two theories exist as to how and why SDSU’s athletic teams became known as the Jackrabbits. Most believe that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College. Many believe that a reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, wrote that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname came in “The Jackrabbit”, SDSU’s yearbook. A poem in the 1907 yearbook puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called “The Jackrabbit” because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, fans knew the school athletic teams as the Barn Yard Cadets, which made sense, because the school went by the name of South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.

The Jackrabbit can run at speeds of 30-to-35 miles per hour, with bursts up to 45, making it the second fastest animal in North America, second only to the pronghorn antelope, which can run at speeds up to 60 miles per hour. Properly speaking, Jackrabbits should not be called rabbits but hares, with longer feet and longer ears than rabbits. Most hares live in open country, whereas rabbits - like cottontails - live in brushy habitats. Jackrabbits can grow up to two feet long; weigh from six to nine pounds, with ears up to eight inches long. Hares do not eat meat; they eat tender herbs in the summer and woody twigs and bark in the winter.
