EARLY IMPACT 2016-17 Roster

WOMEN’S GOLF OUTLOOK: South Dakota State won three tournaments and had nine top-five finishes last season with a group that featured a veteran class on the eight-women roster. With that year under their belts, the Jackrabbits are ready to challenge for tournament titles immediately in 2017.

The Jacks picked up where they left off in the fall, winning two tournaments and finishing in the top five in all five events. They had the second-best stroke average in The Summit League and three Jackrabbits were ranked in the top 10. South Dakota State relies on a trio of seniors in Megan Mingo, Hallie Getz and Islamiah Fuad to provide veteran leadership. All three have competed regularly since joining the SDSU program. The trio enters the spring season having played a combined 238 rounds in the yellow and blue. Mingo became the first Jackrabbit in school history to win a collegiate title, capturing the Jackrabbit Invitational last spring. She currently has the third-lowest 18-hole score (69), is tied for first for 36-hole low score (141) and has the school record for 54-hole score (214). In her career, Mingo owns the school record for season stroke average (74.84), single-season rounds (31) and top-5 (4), top-10 (7) and top-25 (10) finishes. She is also second in career stroke average (77.53), fifth in career rounds (87), second in top-5 (6) and top-10 (12) finishes and the school record holder in top-25 finishes (22). Getz has won two collegiate titles. She captured the Lady Thunderbird Invitational in spring 2016 and the Chip-N Club this fall. She finished the fall with four top-five finishes and

her stroke average (74.93) ranks fifth in The Summit League. Getz owns the school record for career stroke average (77.51) and has five other school records, including 18-hole (68) and 36hole (141) scores. Despite having an injury-plagued junior year, Fuad ranks third in career stroke average (79.07) and fifth in career top-10 finishes (5). This fall, she has collected a pair of top-10 finishes. Junior Natcha Srimaneerungroj, the only other upperclassman on the SDSU roster, has 56 career rounds. She competed in 10 of 11 events last year, finishing third on the roster with a 77.75 stroke average. Srimaneerungroj played in a pair of tournaments this fall. A talented freshman class has already made an impact for the Jackrabbits. Teresa Toscano and Sydney Bormann played in all five fall tournaments. Toscano finished the fall with a 74.42 stroke average and three top-5 and top-10 finishes. She came close to winning her first collegiate tournament, finishing second in the season opener at the Omaha Invitational. Bormann came off competing in her first professional event to record her best finish of the fall season, placing seventh at the Omaha Invitational.

2017 SPRING SLATE The Jackrabbits open the spring season at a new tournament, the Battle at Bolder Creek hosted by Bucknell in Boulder City, Nev., Feb. 13-14. SDSU will host the 8th Annual Jackrabbit Invitational March 10-11. The site of the event changes to Las Vegas, Nev., and the Siena Golf Club. The defending champion Jacks were paced by Megan Mingo, who won her first collegiate tournament and became the first individual champion in Division I for the Jackrabbits. South Dakota State is the two-time defending champion at the Lady Thunderbird Golf Invitational hosted by Southern Utah in St. George, Utah, Mar. 16-17. Getz won her first collegiate event, shooting a three-under par 141 to lead the 79-player field in 2016.. The Jackrabbits make their fourth appearance at the Kansas City Shootout hosted by UMKC April 9-10 in Kansas City, Mo. The team finished fourth last year with Mingo tying for 12th. SDSU returns to Nebraska City, Neb., for the 2017 Summit League Championship April 23-25. The Jacks have placed second and third the last two years.

Director of Golf - Casey VanDamme, Third Year

Immediate impact. Those two words could describe Casey VanDamme’s two seasons as South Dakota State’s Director of Golf. Under his guidance, the Jackrabbits women’s golf team has won five tournaments and finished second in the 2016 Summit League Championship. SDSU also broke the school record for single-season scoring average (303.74). Its scoring average was more than three strokes better than the previous record. Individually, SDSU, broke eight single-season marks with and first-team All-Summit League selection Megan Mingo setting all eight. Mingo and first-team All-Summit League pick Hallie Getz both won the program’s first individual titles and have the top two single-season records for stroke average and are the top two for career stroke average. All told, five of eight Jackrabbits dropped two-ormore strokes from their 2014-15 average. VanDamme, who is SDSU’s second full-time golf coach, spent five seasons at Tennessee as director of instruction/player development, beginning in 2009. During his tenure, Tennessee equaled its best postseason stretch in school history with five trips to the NCAA Championship regionals, advancing to the 2010, 2011 and 2013 NCAA Championships.

Prior to coaching the Vols, VanDamme learned the trade under renowned golf instructor Jim McLean. He spent seven years at the Jim McLean Golf School in Palm Springs, Calif., and Traverse City, Mich., becoming the youngest master instructor in school history. VanDamme has worked with PGA Tour players, including as an on-site teaching professional to a participant in the 2009 PGA Championship. He began his collegiate golf career at Marquette before finishing at Northern Michigan, where he graduated in 2000. VanDamme started his tenure under McLean in 1998 while still playing collegiately. He also played profes-

sionally on the National Golf Association Hooters Tour in 2003-04. From 2006 to 2009, VanDamme served as athletic director at Mid Peninsula High School in Rock, Mich., also working summers since 2005 with the CVD Golf Academy in Gladstone, Mich. He also served in 2008 as head golf professional at LochenHeath Golf Club in Traverse City. VanDamme and his wife, the former Jill Gobert, are natives of Perkins, Mich., and are the parents of daughters, Madelyn, Claire, Lizzy and son, Andrew.

Assistant Coach - David Ellis, Second Year

David Ellis enters his second season with the Jackrabbits as assistant coach. He helped the Jacks finish second at The Summit League Championship and win three regular-season tournament titles. He also helped coach Megan Mingo and Hallie Getz to first-team All-Summit League honors and to a pair of individual titles, the first in the program’s history. Ellis, who spent two seasons at University of Central Florida as the men’s golf assistant, helped lead the Knights to a No. 6 final Golfstat ranking in 2013-14, a runner-up finish at the American Athletic Conference Championship, a spot in the NCAA regional, and a guided a student-athlete to the 2014 national championship. In 2014-15, Ellis and UCF finished third at the conference championship and won the

FAU Slomin Autism Invite. Additionally, he also coached four student-athletes playing professionally on the Web.com Tour and PGA Tour Canada. A former standout at Michigan State, Ellis was a three-time team captain and played in three Big Ten Championships, finishing in the top 20 in 2012. Academically, he was a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar, four-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and four-time All-Big Ten Academic selection. He was honored with the Spartans’ most prestigious accolade—The President’s Award—honoring the MSU graduating senior with the highest GPA. Playing the junior circuit, Ellis won the 2007 Michigan Junior Amateur and was the 2008 MHSAA Division I Upper Peninsula individual champion. In addition to his father Dean, a fellow SDSU assistant coach, Ellis’ twin brother, Daniel, is an assistant golf coach at Michigan State.

Assistant Coach - Dean Ellis, Third Year

Dean Ellis, who spent 20 years as the Northern Michigan head golf coach, joined the South Dakota State golf program as assistant coach in 2014. In two seasons, Ellis has helped the Jacks finish second at The Summit League Championship (2015-16) and win five regular-season tournament titles. He also helped coach Megan Mingo and Hallie Getz to 2015-16 first-team All-Summit League honors and two a pair of individual titles, the first in the program’s history. Ellis, who was named the head golf coach at Northern Michigan in 1993, led NMU to the 2014 NCAA Regionals, where it placed 14th, after finishing eighth at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Golf (GLIAC) Championships. Additionally, he guided the Wildcats to the 1999 NCAA Division II Tournament. While at Northern Michigan, Ellis served as the Golf Association of Michigan Governor, on the NCAA Division II, District IV Golf Regional Advisory Committees and organized and administrated the 1999 and 2010 GLIAC Golf Championships.

In 2011-12, Ellis was the lead instructor at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa where he provided individual and group lessons with use of JC-Video and Foresight GC2. He was also the head golf professional at the Wawonowin Country Club in Ishpeming, Mich., in 1991, winning the club championship in 1995. Additionally, Ellis won the Upper Peninsula men’s amateur championship in 1981. Ellis was also the men’s basketball coach at Northern Michigan, starting in 1986-87. He posted a 369-303 record, becoming the winningest coach in program history in 2005. Ellis stepped down as head coach in 2010 after 24 years. Under Ellis’ leadership, the Wildcats made 13 appearances in the GLIAC postseason tournament and won the 1999-2000 title. His 1993, 1999 and 2000 squads won GLIAC regularseason titles and also qualified for the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament. He had four 20-win seasons (1993, '94, '99, '00) and was selected 1993 GLIAC Coach of the Year. A native of Negaunee, Mich., where he was a standout athlete, Ellis earned 6

three letters in basketball and four in golf at Southwest Missouri State University. He transferred to Northern Michigan where he completed work on his bachelor’s degree in 1983. Ellis and his wife, Lois, are the parents of David, SDSU assistant golf coach, and Daniel, Michigan State assistant golf coach.

Student Assistant Coach - Sydney MacDonald, First Year Former Jackrabbit Sydney MacDonald joins the coaching staff as the student coach after a stellar career on the golf course.

MacDonald finished her career ranked fifth in stroke average (79.30), tied for first in rounds (119), first in top-5 finishes, top-10 finishes and second in top-25 finishes. She was first Jackrabbit to shoot below 70 for 18 holes in 2014-15 and the fourth Jackrabbit to place second at an event in Division I school history in 2014-15. MacDonald had the second-lowest scoring average in a single season in 2014-15 The Calgary, Alberta, native was a two-time second-team All-Summit League selection and earned Academic All-Summit League in 201415. MacDonald earned The Summit League Golfer of the Week after setting the school record for 18 holes with a two-under par 68 in the final round at MSU Ocala Spring Invitational in 2014-15. Her first league honor came in 2013-14 when she was the runner-up at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, firing a 152 (73-79) and earning Summit League Golfer of the Week accolades.

Brookings Country Club Brookings Country Club, home of the South Dakota State men’s and women’s golf programs, has long been recognized as one of the region’s best courses. The 18-hole, par-72, 4,800-

yard course was designed by Earl Bartling and Ward Waltz. It is characterized by bluegrass greens, which are lush and serene, fairways that are challenging, yet uncrowded, and a rolling terrain.

The Brookings Country Club sits on 167 acres 8 miles southwest of the SDSU campus. It has hosted numerous collegiate events and annually hosts U.S. amateur qualifying events.

South Dakota State University (SDSU) is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university. As South Dakota's 1862 Morrill Act landgrant university, SDSU had a fall 2016 enrollment of 12,613 students from all 50 states and 81 countries. Approximately 67 percent of SDSU students are residents of South Dakota, 29 percent are from other states and 4 percent from other countries. STATE UNIVERSITY Legend of the Jackrabbit

There are two theories as to how and why the Jackrabbit nickname evolved. The most common belief is that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College, as the university was then known. A reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, was believed to have written that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname is given in The Jackrabbit, SDSU’s yearbook. There is a poem in the 1907 yearbook that puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called The Jackrabbit because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, school athletic teams were known as the Barn Yard Cadets as SDSU was known as South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.

Dr. BARRY H. DUNN President

Dr. Barry H. Dunn was named the 20th president of South Dakota State University in April 2016, the fourth alumnus chosen to lead the institution. He took office in May 2016. Dunn received a bachelor’s degree in biology at SDSU in 1975 and subsequently completed two graduate degrees in animal science—a master’s in 1977 and a Ph.D. in in 2000—at the Brookings campus. He became the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council endowed dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences in 2010. He also served as director of SDSU Extension and as a professor of animal science. As dean, Dunn led a college with some 550 faculty and staff, 2,800 graduate and undergraduate students, and a $78 million annual budget, including more than $20 million in grant and contract awards, fundraising and development. He shaped the academic and strategic direction of eight departments, spanning 18 degree programs, one regional research and outreach center, six research field stations and 14,500 acres of Agricultural Experiment Station research land. As Extension director, Dunn administered and set the vision for five program areas across two colleges and nine departments, as well as eight regional extension centers with a $12 million annual budget. He led a team of some 150 faculty and staff members and 3,500 adult volunteers. Prior to that, Dunn spent six years at Texas A&M University-Kingsville from

2004 to 2010, as executive director of the King Ranch Institute for Range Management. He first worked in Brookings as an Extension livestock specialist and as an assistant professor in SDSU’s Department of Animal and Range Science from 1997 to 2004. From 1979 to 1996, Dunn was a successful rancher, managing his family’s cattle ranch in Mission. In 2015, he was appointed to the South Dakota Habitat Conservation Fund by Gov. Dennis Daugaard, and to the Governor’s Pheasant Work Group in 2014. He served as an ex officio member of the ag advisory board for the First Dakota National Bank, Yankton from 2011 to 2016, and was a member of the board of directors for Padlock Ranch, Dayton, Wyoming, from 2009 to 2016. Dunn has a rich academic background, was a successful rancher and farm operator and is a published author and researcher. He is a nationally recognized expert in beef production and ranching systems, and is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Range Management, the American Society of Animal Science, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. He has a deep historical and cultural knowledge of South Dakota and South Dakota State University, and strong, statewide relationships with industry influencers and stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, university administration, faculty and staff. He lives with his wife, Jane Dunn, on her family’s original homestead north of Brookings, where they raised their two sons, Thomas and Michael.

JUSTIN SELL Athletic Director

Justin Sell joined the Jackrabbits staff May 7, 2009, as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University. Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21sport Division I athletics program. Eighteen SDSU teams compete in The Summit League, while football competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision and wrestling competes as a member of the Big 12 Conference. Equestrian competes under the umbrella of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association. Under Sell’s leadership, SDSU athletics continues to make strides in athletic competition, in the classroom, in fundraising and in reconnecting with alumni. Athletically, the Jackrabbits claimed 27 regular and postseason league championships in six different sports since 2009-10. That broad-based success has led SDSU to claim The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup all-sports trophy four times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16), along with winning both The Summit League’s Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award during the 2013-14 season. SDSU also claimed the Steinbrecher award during the 2012-13 and 2015-16 seasons and earned the league’s Sportsmanship Award, an award voted upon by its peers, during the 2010-11 campaign. In the classroom, Jackrabbits student-athletes continually post a GPA of 3.2or-higher in more than 70 different majors, which led SDSU to winning The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 and 2012-13 academic years and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Academic Award in all eight years in the league (2008-15). In January 2011, Sell announced a partnership with Learfield Sports, signing a 10-year deal worth $13 million for SDSU athletics. Learfield Sports quickly established a Brookings-based entity known as “Jackrabbit Sports Properties” that directs all aspects of the partnership, including managing and selling multimedia and sponsorship rights for South Dakota State Athletics. In addition to the deal with Learfield Sports, Sell directed the implementation of the Letterwinners Club, which provides opportunities for Jackrabbits Athletics to reconnect and stay connected with former student-athletes, while supporting

current student-athletes at South Dakota State. In the years to come, Sell wants to continue reconnecting with former Jackrabbit student-athletes and enhancing the athletic facilities while still maintaining success, both in competition, but more importantly, in the classroom. On the facilities front, Sell oversaw the completion of the Dykhouse StudentAthlete Center in 2010, and developed the 2025 SDSU Athletic Facilities Master Plan. Additionally, Sell spearheaded efforts to add permanent seating and a press box at Erv Huether Field, chairback seating in both Frost Arena and Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Construction of the indoor facility—the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex— began in August 2013, and finished in the fall of 2014. Lead gifts totaling $12.5 million toward the construction of the new Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, were received in October 2013. The project began in the fall of 2014 and was completed for the 2016 season. In total, Sell spearheaded the fundraising efforts to raise more than $57 million in private donations since Aug. 1, 2012, for the SanfordJackrabbit Complex and Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Born in Salem, Ore., and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the University of Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked at Villanova University, Syracuse University, The Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events. In the community, Sell serves as a board member of the Brookings Chamber of Commerce, Brookings Convention and Visitor's Bureau, Brookings Friends of Baseball and on the Brookings Health System. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992. Sell and his wife, Jennie, have four children; Abbie, Zach, Josh and Eric.

MATT MAHER - Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration

service. Maher also served as a liaison to the baseball, soccer and ice hockey head coaches associations. Maher was also involved in managing and facilitating membership engagement on numerous Division I governance issues and committees. This work included coordinating the activities of and providing support to the following NCAA groups: Division I Council, Division I Student-Athlete Experience Committee, Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement and Division I Committee on Institutional Performance. Maher provided guidance involving policies related to amateurism and agent issues, recruiting concepts, cost of attendance, student-athlete well-being issues and strategic planning. Prior to his NCAA experience, Maher worked in the athletics compliance offices at Nebraska, Creighton and Omaha. Originally from Omaha, Neb., Maher earned his Bachelor of Science in finance in 2005 from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and his Juris Doctor in 2008 from The University of Nebraska College of Law. While pursuing his law degree, Maher published two law review articles regarding specific topics within intercollegiate athletics and was the first graduate from Nebraska College of Law to receive a concentration and certification in intercollegiate sports law. Maher and his wife, Aimee, live in Brookings with their daughter, Sophia, and son, Dean.

Matt Maher joined the SDSU staff as the senior associate athletics director for administration in August 2016. He manages various day-to-day operations of the athletic department, including overseeing the business office, the sports medicine, and strength and conditioning departments, strategic planning and special projects. Maher is the primary athletics liaison for campus and community organizations and also serves as the sport administrator for the Jackrabbits men’s basketball, wrestling, volleyball and men’s and women’s tennis programs. Prior to joining SDSU athletics, Maher spent eight years at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) national office, most recently serving as associate director of academic & membership affairs. In that role, Maher managed the student-athlete reinstatement process, which involved risk assessment and strategic management of cases with complex legislative matters and significant media attention. Through additional strategic initiatives, Maher created a decision-review process to effectively measure the consistent work of waiver teams, as well as implemented a program to reallocate staff time and resources in a more efficient manner to provide better customer

Kathy Heylens came to South Dakota State in July 1984 as a member of the staff in the admissions office before moving to athletics two years later as a senior secretary. Heylens became the institution’s first full-time compliance coordinator in 1990 and continues those duties as the senior associate athletic director for compliance and senior woman’s administrator. Heylens manages all aspects of the athletics compliance program to ensure strict adherence with NCAA, affiliated conferences and university rules and regulations for amateurism, eligibility, recruiting, financial aid, awards and benefits, playing and practice seasons and enforcement. Heylens is serving an appointment to a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Legislative Council, which serves as the primary legislative body in the Division I governance structure. She also has been appointed to the four-member Legislative Council Administrative Committee, which acts on behalf of the full Legislative Council between meetings to transact routine items of business. She also serves on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Governance Committee. In addition to her day-to-day duties, Heylens serves on the Undergraduate Experience Committee, Diversity Committee, Intercollegiate Athletics Board and Compliance Team.

Jeff Holm joined the SDSU athletic staff as the senior associate athletic director for facilities and operations in July 2014, after spending 13 years in various roles at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. A native of Brookings, Holm brings more than a decade of experience in intercollegiate athletics in both coaching and administration to the Jackrabbits, the last four years as the associate athletic director at Augustana College after serving as an assistant athletics director from 2006-10. While at Augustana, Holm served as the Vikings baseball coach from 2001-06, and earned North Central Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2003 after leading his squad to the conference championship. Prior to taking over the Augustana baseball program, Holm served as the head baseball coach at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., from 1998-2001. He also served as the chair of the exercise science department at MU in 2001. A former baseball player at Minnesota State, Mankato, Holm earned a bachelor's degree in math education with a minor in coaching from MSU in 1993, and earned a master's degree in sport pedagogy from South Dakota State in 1997. While at SDSU, he served as an assistant baseball coach for the Jackrabbits. 30

Sr. Associate Athletics Director for Development

Scott Brown joined the Jackrabbits staff as the senior associate athletic director for development March 3, 2014. He manages all fundraising operations for the South Dakota State athletics department. Serves as the sport administrator for the Jackrabbit football and baseball programs. Brown came to State after serving as the director of development for UCLA Athletics. During his time with the Bruins, oversaw major gift fundraising efforts for a variety of programs. Directed the implementation of a sport-specific program endowment initiative and the creation of an athletics-specific planned giving program. Before his time at UCLA, Brown held a variety of positions at the University of Iowa. He started as an intern in the ticket office and eventually became the associate director of development. During his time in Iowa City, Brown managed the Hawkeyes’ annual fund and served as the liaison between the University of Iowa Foundation and athletic ticket office. Originally from Storm Lake, Iowa, Brown graduated from Simpson College (Iowa) with bachelor’s degrees in sports administration and political science in 2003. He added a master’s degree in sport management from Western Illinois in 2005.
