Sophomore Andrew Youngblom was 7-15 as a freshman last season. Youngblom is the 149-pound wrestler in a solid core of middle weights.

Sophomore John Nething II was 8-18 in his freshman season. Nething II looks to improve on this mark as a full-time starter this season.

Despite coming off a 1-13-1 season in 2010-11, South Dakota State enters the 2011-12 with high ambitions and a frame of mind to climb the Western Wrestling Conference standings. The Jackrabbits return 10 letterwinners and six starters from a young squad and head coach Jason Liles anticipates a solid leadership core, as well as an impact from incoming upperclassmen and freshmen. After becoming the all-time wins leader at South Dakota State four seasons ago, Liles enters the 2011-12 season with a record of 144-134-5. Lower Weights: 125-141 “Two of the lighter weight classes will be manned by upperclassmen who will give the Jacks leadership and experience in Aaron Pickrel (125) and Dustin Walraven (141),” said head coach Jason Liles. “Both of them have been close but need to establish themselves on the national scene. At 133 pounds Nick Chavez will get the nod and make his collegiate debut as a starter. We expect him to improve as year goes on through solid competition.” Redshirt junior Pickrel made a splash last season, as Liles expected, by posting a 26-10 season record and finishing in fourth place at 125 pounds at the NCAA West Regional. Redshirt freshman Drew Fleming will also wrestle at 125 pounds this season. Fleming finished with a 7-5 record last season. At 133 pounds, Chavez, a freshman from Redlands, Calif., held a 180-26 record in high school, including CIF team and individual championships. He was a three-time league and CIF place winner and Master’s qualifier in his prep days. At 141 pounds, redshirt junior Walraven, 59-41 on his career, posted a 17-8 record last

season. It was his third straight season with a winning record. Junior Tyler Johnson will compete for time on the mat, along with incoming freshman Bronson Steuber. Johnson posted a 1-14 record last season, including an 0-8 mark in the WWC. Steuber joins the team as a three-time Minnesota state champion from Fairmont. Middle Weights: 149-165 “It is excellent to have all three starters returning at these weights in Andrew Younblom (149), Nick Flynn (157) and John Nething II (165),” said Liles. “It is even better they will be challenged by some redshirt freshman (Cody Pack at 149, Joe Brewster at 157) and possibly a few true freshman (Colby Kloetzer at 149, Dillon Reid at 157/165). In addition, these weights have wrestlers who could contribute if need be.” At 149 pounds, Youngblom, a sophomore, was 7-15 last season. Kevin Caruso and Pack figure to be contenders, as well. Caruso was 4-9 last season, while Pack did not log a decision. Two freshmen round out the 149-pound weight class in Brandon Brian and Kloetzer. Brian comes to the team from Las Vegas, Nev., where he was a two-time state qualifier and state runner-up last year. Kloetzer journeys over from Idaho, where he was a three-time state champion, national runner-up and seven-time All-American. At 157 pounds, Flynn, a senior, posted an 11-17 record and finished in third place at the NCAA West Regional last season. The Jacks return one other wrestler at this weight who will compete for time in Brewster. Brewster, a redshirt freshman, was 15-8. Newcomer Austin Lindsay, a junior from

2011-2012 South Dakota State Wrestling SEASON PREVIEW Whitman, Mass., will battle for a spot in this stacked weight class. At 165 pounds, Nething II, a sophomore, leads the way. Nething II posted a 8-18 record last season as a freshman. Redshirt freshman Troy Morisette looks to make an impact this season, along with incoming freshman Reid. Reid joins the team from Red Bluff, Calif. Upper Weights: 174-Hwt. “There are two starters returning in these weight classes in Joe Rasmussen (174/184) and Cord Willers (174/184/197),” said Liles. “Expect transfer newcomers Tony Lisek (174/184) and Casey Finnicum (174) to push for starting positions, while newcomer Shea Nolan and redshirt freshman Nick Mart will battle for the 197-pounds spot. Heavyweight will be transfer Joe Skow, who has qualified twice for the NAIA national tournament.” At 174 pounds, Rasmussen, a junior, posted a 2-20 record last season. Redshirt junior Willers was 4-15. Joining them at 174-pounds is Finnicum and Ryan Festag. Finnicum is a junior from Lindwood, Wash., while Festag is a freshman Greco All-American state place winner from Meridian, Idaho. At 184 pounds, Lisek joins SDSU after two years at Jamestown Community College, where he posted a 55-10 overall record and was a two-time national qualifier. Dylan Penka, a freshman, held a 136-16 record in high school and was a state champion last season, the last of four straight top-four individual finishes. At 197 pounds, Mart and Nolan will compete for the spot. Redshirt freshman Mart did not see any action last season.

Senior Nick Flynn returns at 157-pounds after posting an 11-17 record last season. Flynn placed third at the NCAA West Regional last season.

Freshman Nolan joins the team from Rio Rancho, N.M. At heavyweight, Skow, a junior from Jackson, Minn., will battle freshman Cody Carrow. Carrow, from Medina, Ohio., was a four-year letterwinner, two-time conference champion and three-time district qualifier in high school, while posting 111 career wins. “We have more depth and talent in most weights this season than in the past,” Liles said. “It is critical to our success to improve on a daily basis and to stay healthy.”

Head coach Jason Liles became the all-time winningest coach at SDSU two seasons ago. His career record at SDSU stands at 144-134-5.

South Dakota State University wrestling coach Jason Liles enters his 19th season for the Jackrabbits, his third since becoming the alltime wins leader at the university. His record currently stands at 144-134-5. Liles overtook the late Warren Williamson, who compiled a 134-74-9 dual record over 16 seasons from 1957-68 and 1970-73. Overall, Liles holds a career record of 233-162-6 over a decorated 27 seasons. Starting with the 2004-05 season, the Jackrabbits competed at the NCAA Division I level. SDSU wrestled as an independent the first two seasons in the D-I ranks, then joined seven other schools in forming the Western Wrestling Conference in time for the 2006-07 season. SDSU completed a fast-tracked transition to Division I prior to the 2006-07 season, making the Jackrabbits eligible for postseason consideration. Under Liles’ guidance, redshirt freshman Ryan Meyer became the first SDSU wrestler in the D-I era to qualify for the national meet following a runner-up effort in the 165-pound weight class at the 2007 West Regional. In 2009, Tyler Sorenson represented the Jacks at the national tournament after a second-place finish at the West Regional.

Sorenson was hampered by injury to start the season but bounced back to a 14-4 record, with all losses to wrestlers at the national meet. In 2010, Sorenson finished first at the West Regional and made a repeat appearance at the national tournament. As a team, the Jackrabbits placed fifth at the 2007 and 2009 West Regional and sixth in 2008 and 2010. Liles led SDSU to a winning dual record nine times, including a streak of eight consecutive winning seasons from 1996-2003. As part of that streak, the Jackrabbits tied a school record with 17 dual victories during the 1997-98 season. SDSU won the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals that season and repeated the feat during the 1999-2000 season. In 1993-94, Liles took over the South Dakota State wrestling program and guided the Jackrabbits to a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Division II tournament. That marked the highest national finish for the Jackrabbits in 25 years and was the first time that SDSU had two individual national champions — Chad Lamer at 177 and Justin Blasius at 190 — in the same season.

2011-2012 South Dakota State Wrestling Coaching Staff In each of his first 10 seasons, Liles led the Jackrabbits to a top-10 finish at the NCAA Division II Championships, including nine straight top-five finishes. SDSU placed second at nationals twice (1998, 2001), third once (2001), fourth four times (1994,1996, 1997, 2000) and fifth two times (1995, 1999). He also led SDSU to a North Central Conference team title in 1997 — its first in 17 years. Liles was named Division II Wrestling Coach of the Year during the 2000-01 season, one in which the Jackrabbits posted a 9-5-1 dual record and came within a victory of claiming the first team national championship in school history. By the time SDSU completed its run as a member of the North Central Conference and NCAA Division II at the close of the 200304 season, the SDSU wrestling program had produced 46 All-Americans, 11 national champions and 36 NWCA All-Academic Team selections during Liles’ tenure. Liles came to SDSU in 1993 after a nineyear stay at Montana State University-Northern, in Havre, where he led his squads to NAIA national championships in 1991 and 1992. Liles was inducted into the MSU-Northern Athletic Hall of Fame during the fall of 2003. His teams at MSU-N won NAIA District-12 championships in 1988, 1990, 1991 and 1992. During his career at MSU-N Liles posted a dual record of 89-33, coached six individual national champions (including the Outstanding

Wrestler at the 1990 national tournament), and produced 48 All-Americans. His teams produced eight academic All-Americans, with the team showing a 3.00 cumulative grade point average from 19871993. Prior to joining the staff at MSU-N, Liles was assistant wrestling coach at Miami University in Ohio (1981-84). While serving as an assistant coach at Miami University (Ohio), he worked toward the master’s degree he received in 1982. At Miami, Liles played an integral part in developing three NCAA Division I All-Americans. Miami won the Mid-America Conference title in 1984 and had an alternate to the 1984 USA Olympic Freestyle team. Liles got his start in coaching at the high school level in his native state of Ohio. In two seasons at Arcadia High School, he produced back-to-back Blanchard Valley Conference championships in 1980 and 1981, when his teams combined for a 20-6 dual record. A 1979 graduate of Bowling Green State University in Ohio, Liles ended his career as the winningest wrestler in the university’s history. A four-year starter, he was chosen the team’s most valuable wrestler his last three seasons (1977-79). Liles and his wife Holly reside in Brookings. They have two sons - Walker and Hunter.

2011-2012 South Dakota State Wrestling Coaching Staff Ty Eustice Assistant Coach University of Iowa, ‘06 First Season Ty Eustice joined the South Dakota State University wrestling program as the first full-time assistant coach in the history of the program in 2011. Eustice spent the last two seasons as the head coach at Iowa Lakes. He became one of the nation’s youngest head coaches when he was hired in July 2009. In his time at ILCC, Eustice led the Lakers to a 14-11 dual meet record and two top-10 national tournament places. ILCC qualified 17 wrestlers for nationals during his tenure, including a two-time national champion, six All-Americans and two Academic All-Americans. Prior to his time at Iowa Lakes, Eustice served as assistant wrestling coach at Cornell College, a Division III institution in Mount Vernon, Iowa. In his lone season, the Rams finished eighth at the NCAA Championships and had three All-Americans. Before Cornell, Eustice spent two years at Division II Minnesota State University, Mankato as a graduate assistant. In his time at MSU, Eustice earned a Master of Arts degree in sports management while helping the Mavericks secure two top-five team finishes, two individual national champions, and 12 All-Americans. Eustice was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Iowa from 2001-06. After redshirting as a freshman, Eustice compiled a 111-29 collegiate record, including a 28-3 mark his senior season. He received all-American recognition his junior and senior years, placing fifth and second at the NCAA Championships, respectively. Eustice received the team Mike Howard Most Valuable Wrestler his senior year and the team Mike McGivern Most Courageous Wrestler Award his redshirt freshman year. He was a two-time team captain, four-time NCAA Division I National Qualifier and a Cadet, Junior and FILA Junior National Freestyle All-American.

Nate Hansen Assistant Coach Luther College ‘07 Fifth Season Nate Hansen is in his fifth season as an assistant wrestling coach at South Dakota State. A Gregory, S.D. native, Hansen won three consecutive South Dakota Class B state titles from 2001-03 and recorded six top-five finishes. He then went on to a successful collegiate career at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he earned NCAA Division III All-America honors twice. Hansen placed fourth at 125 pounds in 2006, then won a national title in the same weight class as a senior in 2007. He also won an Iowa Conference title in 2007 and was honored as a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association as a junior and senior. After a two-year stint as a graduate assistant under coach Liles, Hansen graduated from South Dakota State with a master’s degree in exercise science in 2009. He currently works on campus for the National Children’s Study.

Zack Schafer Assistant Coach Mercyhurst ‘08, South Dakota State ‘10 Fourth Season

Zack Schafer is in his fourth season as a wrestling coach at South Dakota State University. At SDSU, Schafer is responsible for coaching the middle weights. Schafer was a three-time Division II All-American at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. In 2005, Schafer placed fourth at 165 pounds and claimed runner-up honors in 2006. In 2007, Schafer moved up to 174 pounds where he placed seventh. He was also a three-time NWCA Academic All-American. Schafer left Mercyhurst as the all-time leader in wins (109), reversals, nearfalls, and major decisions. He was also second in pins, team points and technical falls. The Girard, Pa., native was a volunteer assistant coach at Mercyhurst College during the 2007-2008 season. He graduated from SDSU in 2010 with a master’s degree in sports pedagogy after graduating from Mercyhurst with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2008.

2011-2012 South Dakota State Wrestling Coaching & Support Staff Nate Moe Head Strenth and Conditioning Coach Minnesota State-Moorhead ‘96 Second season Nathan Moe joined the South Dakota State staff as the head strength and conditioning coach in August 2005, where he works directly with the Jackrabbit football, volleyball, baseball and softball teams. He also oversees the design and implementation of the year-round strength and conditioning programs for all of South Dakota State’s 21 varsity sports. Moe came to South Dakota State after heading the strength and conditioning program at Eastern Illinois University for three years, where he oversaw the design and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for all 22 of the Panthers’ varsity sports. Before his days with the Panthers in Charleston, Ill., Moe worked as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he worked with the Owls’ football strength program, while being directly responsible for men’s and women’s track, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s swimming, women’s soccer and men’s golf. From 1997 through the spring of 1999, Moe worked as a graduate assistant in the strength and conditioning program at the University of Texas in Austin, where he earned a MEd. in Exercise Physiology. He also worked in private business in physical fitness in Austin and Houston, Texas and in Fargo, N.D. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a USA Weightlifting Certified Club Coach, Moe also maintains certifications in the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. A Minnesota native, Moe graduated from Moorhead State University in Moorhead, Minn., in 1996, with a Bachelor of Science in exercise science. He also earned all-conference honors as a linebacker for the 1995 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champion Dragons. Moe and his wife Colleen live in Brookings with their son, Zachary and daughter Kylie.

Andrew Stocks Strenth and Conditioning Coach Wisconsin-La Crosse ‘10 First season Andrew Stocks is entering his first season as strength and conditioning coach for the Jackrabbits wrestling team. Stocks is a graduate assistant pursuing a master’s degree in nutrition, exercise, and food sciences. Before coming to South Dakota State, he received a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. After graduating, he completed strength and conditioning internships at the University of Michigan, the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the University of Missouri. Andrew is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and by USA Weightlifting as a Level I Sports Performance Coach.

2011-2012 South Dakota State Wrestling Wrestling Support Staff Owen Stanley Director of Sports Medicine West Chester ‘02, Kentucky ‘05 Third season Owen Stanley brought a wealth of professional collegiate experience with him when he joined the South Dakota State staff in July 2009, where he oversees an athletic training staff that includes five assistant trainers and five graduate assistants. A native of Macungie, Pa., Stanley earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from West Chester University (Pa.) in 2002. He went on to earn a master’s degree in kinesiology and health promotion at the University of Kentucky in 2005, while serving as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the Wildcats’ football and baseball teams. Upon graduating from Kentucky, Stanley joined the athletic training staff at the University of Northern Iowa in 2005, working as the assistant director of athletic training services and head football athletic trainer. In 2007, Stanley accepted the position of assistant athletic trainer for the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs, where he worked until joining the Jackrabbits. Stanley’s other professional experience includes internships with the NFL’s New York Jets and the Philadelphia Wings of the Professional Indoor Lacrosse league. In addition to his athletic training experience, Stanley gave presentations at the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Annual Meeting and the Southeast Athletic Trainers’ Association Symposium. He also chaired the Young Professionals Committee of the Missouri Athletic Trainers Association and served as an E-Mentor for NATA. Owen and and his wife Erin live in Brookings.

Bryce Kern Certified Athletic Trainer Wisconsin-Eau Claire First season In his free time, Bryce Kern participates in many outdoor activities. While he spends a lot of time at work and in school, Kern also enjoys hunting, fishing, cycling, hiking and backyard sports.

2011-2012 South Dakota State Wrestling Wrestling Support Staff Tru Boldt Office Assistant SDSU ‘11 Third season Tru Boldt grew up in Arlington, S.D. She has been around wrestling her entire life. Boldt’s brother wrestled at SDSU, which allowed Boldt to become familiar with the wrestling program and head coach Jason Liles.

Kelsi Huxford Office Assistant SDSU ‘14 Second season Kelsi Huxford joined the wrestling program two years ago. She has been a wrestling manager for many years at many levels. Huxford traveled with Team Minnesota to Virginia Beach as a manager during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Both of Huxford’s brothers wrestled and her dad is a wrestling coach in St. Clair, Minn.

Shelby Radke Office Assistant SDSU ‘14 Second season Shelby Radke is a sophomore from Southern Minnesota. She is double majoring in Agriculture Business and Human Resources with a minor in Marketing. Radke was an active statistician for Maple River High School for four years and traveled to Virginia Beach for National High School Wrestling as a member of the 2010 Team Minnesota.

2011-2012 South Dakota State Wrestling Coming off its best season, the Western Wrestling Conference, an NCAA Division I wrestling-only alliance, will begin its sixth year of competition in 2011-12. Charter members of the Western Wrestling Conference include: the United States Air Force Academy, North Dakota State University, the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Northern Iowa, South Dakota State University, Utah Valley University and the University of Wyoming. The WWC had a breakout year in 20102010-11 WWC ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM - FIRST TEAM 11, with three league wrestlers earning All-America honors. The conference has Wt. Wrestler School Yr. 2011-2012 South Dakota State Wrestling Frost Arena South Dakota State University hosts home matches in Frost Arena, named after former Jackrabbit coach and athletic director R.B. “Jack” Frost. Frost served as athletic director and professor and head of the physical education department from 1947 until 1960. He compiled an 86-79 mark in seven seasons as Jackrabbit men’s basketball coach from 1948-54. Frost was also an international leader in recreation, health and physical education, serving in 1965 as the United States representative at the Fifth Session of the International Olympic Academy in Greece. Frost Arena, which is part of the Stanley J. Marshall HPER Center, now seats approximately 6,500 fans. The addition of chair-back lower-level seating prior to the 1992-93 season, as well as the addition of chair-back seating in the lower level end zones and new student bleachers in the summer of 2004, eliminated nearly 2,500 seats from the original seating capacity of 9,500. In the fall of 2005, Frost Arena was included with Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in a $3 million Daktronics scoreboard project. The Frost Arena portion includes a four-sided scoreboard with four ProStar® video screens measuring 12 feet by seven feet, two ProAd® displays measuring 60 feet long by four feet high and a new full-color digital ProTable® scorers table, all of which can display real-time statistics. Widely regarded as the finest arena with the best athletics atmosphere in the state, Frost Arena was the site of NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships in 1973, 1979, 1993 and 2000, as well as a few North Central Conference championship tournaments. In 2010, Frost Arena played host to the NCAA West Regional wrestling tournament. The first event at Frost Arena was held on Feb. 2, 1973, when the Jackrabbit men’s

FROST ARENA has undergone a number of improvements in the past couple years, including the addition of a new scoreboard and video display system. The 37-year-old arena remains one of the premier athletic venues in the Upper Midwest. basketball team hosted the University of North Dakota. In 1994, the one-millionth fan passed through the Frost Arena turnstiles. Frost Arena also has been the site of six North Central Regional men’s basketball tournaments, the 2003 NCAA Division II North Central Regional women’s basketball tournament, as well as regional and state high school tournaments. Postseason basketball returned to Frost Arena in 2007 as two rounds of the Women’s NIT were played in front of capacity crowds. In addition, Frost Arena is the site of SDSU graduation ceremonies, the annual Wacipi

pow-wow, concerts and numerous other campus events. Bids totaling $3,374,115 were let for the facility following legislative approval of the project, with the bill signed by Gov. Frank Farrar on Feb. 14, 1970. Ground was broken Sept. 22, 1970, with the cornerstone placed by Gov. Richard Kneip on Oct. 2, 1971. Final cost of the building was $3,685,000, with the difference made up by gifts and donated items.

Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center The Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center officially opened in April 2010 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony during the annual spring football game. The 30,000-square foot facility houses an academic center for all SDSU student-athletes, serves as the home of Jackrabbit football with coaches offices, locker room, meeting rooms, a strength and conditioning center and athletic training facilities and provides a dedicated 30

area to showcase the program to recruits and donors. Situated on the north end of CoughlinAlumni Stadium, the Dyhouse Center is the first major athletic building constructed on campus since Frost Area in 1973. In November 2007, South Dakota State officials announced gifts totaling $6 million from the Dykhouse family and T. Denny Sanford to begin construction of a student-athlete

development center on the Brookings campus. The Dykhouse Center is a project of It Starts with STATE: A Campaign for South Dakota State University. It is the largest university fundraising drive in state history, with a working goal of $190 million. The campaign is in response to campus-wide strategic planning that developed a vision for future growth on campus.

2011-2012 South Dakota State Wrestling Hall-of-Famers Five individuals from South Dakota State University wrestling have been inducted into the Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame. Warren Williamson

Jim Koch

Inducted 1996

Longtime South Dakota State coach Warren Williamson was one of eight people inducted with the inaugural Hall of Fame Class in March 1996. Williamson coached the Jackrabbits for 16 seasons — from 1957-68 and from 1970-73. During his tenure, he compiled a 134-74-9 dual record, and coached 24 College Division All-Americans and two national champions. His teams also won three North Central Conference titles and placed in the top 10 at the College Division national tournament seven times. Williamson also is a member of the Jackrabbit Sports Hall of Fame and South Dakota Hall of Fame.

Former Jackrabbit wrestler Jim Koch, the longtime head wrestling coach at Wisconsin-Parkside, was inducted into the Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2000. A 1969 graduate of SDSU and a Milbank native, Koch earned runner-up honors at the North Central Conference Championships three time and was an NWCA Academic All-American while wrestling under Warren Williamson. After serving as a graduate assistant at SDSU for one season, Koch accepted the head coaching position at Parkside in 1970. At the time of his induction, Koch’s wrestlers had earned All-America honors 88 times with 10 national titles. He also has held numerous leadership positions in wrestling coaches associations and was instrumental in the creation of the Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Inducted 2004

Lamer was inducted to the Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2004. A four-time All-American, Lamer won three consecutive national titles — the first of which came at 177 pounds in 1994. After repeating as 177-pound champion in 1995, Lamer claimed his final Division II title in 1996 at 190 pounds. He also placed eighth at 167 pounds as a freshman. Lamer completed his collegiate career with a pair of North Central Conference titles and a 132-30-2 record. He posted the best overall record in SDSU history with a 40-2 record during the 1995-96 season.

Inducted 2000 Watertown native Rick Jensen was one of three SDSU inductees to the Divsion II Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2000. During his career at SDSU, Jensen became the school’s first four-time conference champion and was a three-time national finalist. He claimed a national championship at 126 pounds as a freshman in 1976, and also finished as runner-up at 134 pounds in 1977 and 142 pounds in 1979. He ended his career with a 128-24 record. He is also a member of the Jackrabbit Sports Hall of Fame.

2011-2012 South Dakota State Wrestling South Dakota State University You Can Go Anywhere From Here With a record enrollment of 12,725 students in the fall of 2011, South Dakota State remains the state’s largest institution of higher learning.

SDSU Early History

Located in Brookings, the Territorial Legislative Assembly authorized SDSU in 1881 to serve as the state’s land grant institution. Territorial Council member John O’Brien Scobey managed to secure Dakota Agricultural College for his city. Although allocations fell short of the actual cost, the school did open in the fall of 1884 because the president, George Lilley, advanced $500 — one-third of his salary — to finish three rooms in the new Central Building. “Old Central” was soon joined by South (1885) and North (1887), forming the nucleus of campus for a decade and a half. During the first year of operation, the college only held preparatory classes. College classes started in 1885 with five teachers, 17 freshman and 61 preparatory students. Growth stayed slow and erratic for many years, but by the turn of the 20th century, 242 students enrolled and by 1990, SDSU enrollment grew to more than 9,000 students.

Colleges Established

SDSU has granted nearly 70,000 degrees since its charter in 1881. The structure of the college became more complex as enrollments increased. The first nine chairs of instruction established in 1884 included agriculture, science, mathematics, English, modern languages, military tactics, veterinary science, practical business, political & domestic economy and music. By 1907, the year the name of the institution changed to South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, there were 22 departments on campus. Reorganization into the five divisions that formed the basis for the designation of colleges was completed under President Charles W. Pugsley in 1923. In 1964, when “State College” became South Dakota State University, the school included six colleges. Now, students can earn degrees offered through eight colleges. Students can choose from more than 200 majors, minors and options at SDSU with more than 2,500 different course offerings. Master’s degrees can be earned in more than 30 areas, with doctorates available in eight fields. SDSU also offers degree programs through the South Dakota Public Universities and Research Center in Sioux Falls.The Office of Academic Affairs and Outreach coordinates evening, RDTN, Internet and off-campus courses. The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools accredits SDSU, while numerous departments on campus hold accreditation from various other agencies. SDSU celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2006, a yearlong event that culminated with the 2006 Hobo Day football game. Over those 125 years, SDSU grew from a campus of 80 acres in 1881 to a 271-acre campus with facilities worth more than $220 million. The university owns or leases another 15,000 acres for research throughout the state. The Printing and Journalism Building — now named Anson and Ada May Yeager Hall — underwent a $2.1 million expansion and renovation project. Other recent campus construction projects include a $7 million expansion to Crothers Engineering Hall, the renovation of Solberg Hall and the building of a $9 million performing arts center, which opened in the fall of 2002. A new residence hall (Caldwell Hall) and the University

The Coughlin Campanile (left) is considered South Dakota State University’s most recognizable landmark. The campanile’s cornerstone was laid on June 10, 1929, by Charles Coughlin and its chimes have called students to classes with its famous Westminster peals ever since.

Student Union expansion and renovation opened in the fall of 2005, and the Enterprise Institute, located on the southwest corner of campus opened in 2004. In 2005, SDSU spent more than $3 million to install new state of the art scoreboards in Frost Arena and at Coughlin Alumni Stadium.

Agricultural Research

The university reaches all corners of the state through the Cooperative Extension Service and the Agricultural Experiment Station, offering service to improve the quality of rural life. SDSU also sponsors the Center for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship; Engineering Experiment Station, Office of Remote Sensing; Water Resources Institute; Engineering and Environmental Research Center; Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory; and Northern Grain Insect Research Laboratory. These units help strengthen the university’s growing commitment to research and support of state and local economic development efforts. The Northern Great Plains Biostress Laboratory, dedicated in 1993, houses scientists who focus on research aimed at developing new technologies to protect crops and livestock. SDSU is also one of just five universities to serve as a

regional center for the Sun Grant Initiative, which is a concept to solve America’s energy needs and revitalize rural communities with Land-Grant university research, education and Extension programs on renewable energy and bio-based non-food industries. The Harding Distinguished Lecture Series, the F.O. Butler Lectures, the Lusk Lecture and the Amdahl, Schultz-Werth and Griffiths endowments all supplement classroom instruction. Students can also choose from more than 100 clubs and organizations on campus.

Museums & Attractions

The educational opportunities do not end in the classroom or laboratory, as South Dakota State University houses several facilities, including museums and gardens. Dedicated in 1970, and expanded in 2000, the South Dakota Federation of Women’s Club first envisioned the South Dakota Art Museum in 1949. The museum’s collections include early Sioux Indian tribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens. The State Agricultural Heritage Museum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota. The 70-acre McCrory Gardens and South Dakota Arboretum, located south and east of campus, provide a beautiful setting for area residents and tourists to enjoy a stroll through the radiant colors and fragrances of one of the top 10 small ornamental gardens in the nation. It is also recognized as an All-American Display Garden, one of only 13 in the nation. In 1993 McCrory Gardens was designated an All-American Judging Garden to conduct research on annual flowers. Since 1985, private contributions made many new gardens possible including the Rose, Rock, Centennial Prairie, Iris, True Lily, Mum, Native Prairie Collection, Oak Tree Memorial Garden, AllRed Specialty Garden, Peony Garden, Shrub Rose Collection, and Children’s Maze. the Mickelson Grove Memorial in honor of former governor and Brookings resident George S. Mickelson. In 1982, they dedicated the area north of the formal garden to the planting and testing of ornamental trees and shrubs. The 45-acre site was designated the South Dakota State Arboretum in 1988. The arboretum’s purpose is to test woody plants needed to protect agricultural fields and livestock from the region’s harsh environment, to provide hardy trees to shade our towns and cities, and to test ornamental shrubs for both durability and beauty. SDSU Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks Department manage the arboretum and gardens. McCrory Gardens continues to develop more gardens, tree and shrub collections.

COOLIDGE-SYLVAN THEATRE—The Sylvan Theatre, located on the southwest corner of campus, is an outdoor amphitheater that has been the site of concerts, graduations and inaugurations of university presidents since its dedication by President Calvin Coolidge in September 1927.

South Dakota State’s most recognizable landmark may be the 165-foot Coughlin Campanile, the state’s largest chimes tower. A climb of 179 steps leads to a panoramic view of the city. 1909 Engineering graduate Charles Coughlin, who later went on to become head of the Briggs & Stratton Corporation, donated the statuesque structure on the west end of campus at a cost of $65,000. Coughlin laid the campanile’s cornerstone on June 10, 1929. Since then, its chimes call students to classes with the famous Westminster peals. An alumni-sponsored project to restore the campanile was completed in the summer of 2001. Named after a former SDSU President, The Hilton M. Briggs Library, the state’s largest, opened in 1977 and joined South Dakota’s statewide automated library network in 1988.Through the library, users can access holdings from all 10 of the state’s libraries, including official documents and more than 1 million other holdings at Briggs. Adjacent to the campanile, Coolidge-Sylvan Theatre provides a restful, green haven for students since its dedication by President Calvin Coolidge in September 1927. Two theories exist as to how and why SDSU’s athletic teams became known as the “Jackrabbits”. Most believe that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College. Many believe that a reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, wrote that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname came in The Jackrabbit, SDSU’s yearbook. A poem in the 1907 yearbook puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called The Jackrabbit because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, fans knew the school athletic teams as the Barn Yard Cadets as SDSU was known as South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907. The Jackrabbit can run at speeds of 30-to-35 miles per hour, with bursts up to 45, making it the second fastest animal in North America, second only to the pronghorn antelope, which can run at speeds up to 60 miles per hour. Jackrabbits are, properly speaking, not rabbits but hares, with longer feet and longer ears than rabbits. Most hares live in open country, whereas rabbits - like cottontails - live in brushy habitats. Jackrabbits can grow up to two feet long, weigh froms six to nine pounds, with ears up to eight inches long. Hares are vegetarians, eating tender herbs in summer, and woody twigs and bark in the winter.

MEMORIAL PARK—Memorial Park, located between DuPuy Military Hall and Briggs Library in the center of campus, honors SDSU students who have served in the armed forces, including Congressional Medal of Honor recipients Capt. Willibald Bianchi and Col. Leo Thorsness.The park was dedicated in the fall of 2000.

Brookings, South Dakota

Named after W.W. Brookings, who came to the area in 1857. That winter, his legs froze badly enough to force doctors to amputate them. Undaunted, Brookings stayed and eventually became president of the territorial council and a judge in the state supreme court. In honor of his support of railroad construction, and possibly because of his stalwart nature, South Dakota’s first locomotive was named the “Judge Brookings.” Situated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and Interstate 29, about 20 miles west of the Minnesota border and 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, the Brookings community of about 18,500 people continues to grow. The community also houses several recognizable companies including Rainbow Play Systems, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M medical products), Larson Manufacturing (doors and windows), and Daktronics, a leading manufacturer of scoreboards and display systems.

Credentials - All requests for media credentials for SDSU home wrestling matches should be directed to the South Dakota State sports information department at least 24 hours prior to the event. Credentials will be mailed if requests are received a week or more in advance. Otherwise, credentials may be picked up at the Jackrabbit Ticket Office inside the Stanley J. Marshall HPER Center weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Due to limited seating, only working media will be allowed access on a first-come, first-served basis. The following guidelines apply specifically to Internet sites: • No more than two people working for the official Web site of the opponent and/or its official conference site will be issued credentials. • Web sites whose content centers around message boards and chat rooms where users can post anonymous information and/or rumors are ineligible for any consideration for credentials or access. • Credentials will not be granted to any agency operating sites that are in any way affiliated with gambling, or to freelance or fan-based sites that are not affiliated with a legitimate news-gathering organization. The final decision for credentials remains at the sole discretion of the South Dakota State sports information department. Statistics - The South Dakota State sports information office will keep official statistics and will distribute final statistics to teams and members of the media after the conclusion of a game. On the Web - The latest Jackrabbit news and updates can be viewed on the Internet at www.GoJacks.com, the official site of South Dakota State University athletics. Box scores, statistics and a game recap will be posted within an hour following the conclusion of a contest. Interview Policy - Outside of athletics events, interviews with South Dakota State University student-athletes must be arranged 24 hours in advance Monday through Thursday by contacting the SDSU sports information office or the head coach of the sport involved. Please do not contact the student-athlete directly without prior approval — phone numbers of SDSU student-athletes will not be released Media members should understand that all return calls will be made collect or via a toll-free number, unless the student-athlete does the interview from the sports information office. Jackrabbit student-athletes will not be available for interviews prior to a contest the day of a game, but will be available for post-game interviews 10 minutes after the conclusion of contests by contacting a member of the sports information staff or coaching staff.

President, South Dakota State University South Dakota State University, ‘69 Dr. David L. Chicoine became the 19th president of South Dakota State University on January 1, 2007. He is the third alumnus to serve as president of the institution. Dr. Chicoine has over 30 years of experience in higher education with the University of Illinois. He is a nationally recognized economist, specializing in public finance, taxation, and rural economics. His higher education administrative experience includes service as Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Dean of the College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Serving most recently as Vice President for Technology and Economic Development for the University of Illinois system and interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, Chicoine started his career as an Extension economist and specialist with the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service. As vice president at the University of Illinois, he restructured the university’s technology licensing offices, reaching new milestones each year; launched the university’s early stage capital and business development services company, IllinoisVENTURES, LLC, that supported start-up projects, securing special state and university funding for operations and pre-seed investing and facilitated the creation of the $26.5 million early stage Illinois

Emerging Technologies Fund; and he oversaw the expansion of research parks and incubators at the university’s Urbana-Champaign and Chicago campuses. As dean, he transitioned the College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) from 14 administrative units to seven academic departments and the Information Technology unit; completed a capital campaign for ACES surpassing the final goal of $115 million by raising $134 million in private gifts; grew the ACES endowment to $60 million; established $15 million in annual private gift support, funding endowed positions, scholarships and fellowships, and program support for teaching, research, and Extension; and he oversaw the completion of the $22 million ACES Library, Information and Alumni Center where $11 million was from gifts from ACES alumni and friends. He has co-authored four books, 12 book chapters and more than 100 invited and/or peer reviewed academic journal articles. Dr. Chicoine served as an advisor to the Illinois General Assembly on tax issues, farmland property tax assessments, public finance and rural economic issues. He served as a member of the Illinois Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors, and was a member of the board of the Illinois State Treasurer’s Technology Development Fund. He currently is a tenured faculty member in the SDSU Department of Economics, where he has been recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus. Chicoine served as the faculty representative to the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served as chair of the Budget and Finance Committee for the Big Ten Conference for nine of his eleven year term. Dr. Chicoine is a graduate of SDSU with a B.S. in agribusiness in 1969, and the University of Delaware where he received an M.S. in agricultural economics in 1971. In 1978 he received an M.A. in economics from Western Illinois University, and in 1979 he completed his Ph.D. in agricultural economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Justin Sell

Mylo Hellickson

Justin Sell became the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State on May 29, 2009, taking over for Dr. Fred Oien, who retired on April 8, 2009 after 18 years. Sell came to SDSU after 10 years at the University of Northern Iowa, most recently as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for the Panthers. Responsible for community relations in the areas of economic development, tourism and the Chamber of Commerce, Sell played a vital role in community engagement for UNI athletics. As president and co-founder of the CedarValley Sports and Entertainment Commission, he designed, implemented and managed a fundraising plan that raised more than $260,000 to bid and attract statewide, regional and national level events to the local communities. Sell came to UNI in May 1999 as the Operations Manager for Athletic Facilities before earning a promotion to Assistant Athletic Director for Operations in 2000. He worked his way up to Associate Athletic Director in 2002, where he began sport management of nine sports and direct oversight of more than 100 employees. Prior to UNI, Sell worked as the Director of Ticket Operations and Assistant Facility Director and Intramural Director at Villanova from 1995-99, whre he oversaw facility capital projects. Before arriving at Villanova, he worked at Syracuse University and Ohio State. Sell graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1991, earning a degree in Sport Management. He received his master’s in Sport Administration in 1992 from Ohio State, where he worked as a graduate assistant for facilities, summer camps and compliance. He and his wife, Jennie, have four children - Abbie, Zach, Josh and Eric.

Dr. Mylo Hellickson has been South Dakota State University’s Faculty Athletic Representative to the NCAA since 1977. He also serves as the chairman of the Athletic, Intramural and Recreation Committee on campus. Hellickson returned to the classroom as a professor in agricultural engineering after serving several years as Director of Agricultural Extension at SDSU. He has been on staff at South Dakota State since 1969, serving as a professor in agricultural engineering until he was appointed as head of that department during the summer of 1982. Dr. Hellickson’s specialty has been in the area of livestock structures and environment with recent emphasis on solar energy use in agriculture. A native of Belfield, N.D., Hellickson earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering from North Dakota State University in 1964. He later added a master’s degree in agricultural engineering in 1966 from his Alma mater before continuing his education at West Virginia University, where he earned his Ph.D. in engineering in 1969. Hellickson was presented the North Central Conference Meritorious Service Award at the November 1990 meetings.

Senior Associate Athletic Director-External, South Dakota State University Loras College, ‘98

Leon Costello brought his comprehensive background in athletic marketing and administration from the University of Northern Iowa to the South Dakota State athletic staff in March 2010 as the senior associate athletic director for external affairs. Costello worked in a variety of roles for the Northern Iowa Athletic Department the past eight years, most recently serving as the associate athletic director for external relations since July 2008. In that position, Costello oversaw the marketing efforts for the Panther athletic program, directed the Panther Scholarship Club and supervised the men’s and women’s golf programs. During his tenure, Costello assisted in negotiating a 10-year agreement with Learfield Sports to provide additional marketing resources. From 2005-08 Costello served as the assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions, where he assisted with the fundraising efforts of the McLeod Center capital project and coordinated all aspects for the athletic sales and marketing plan, including managing the Northern Iowa Sports Radio Network. Under his direction, UNI also secured two separate cable television agreements and saw a 700 percent increase in membership of the official student athletic group. A native of Fairbank, Iowa, Costello graduated from Loras College with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and sport science in 1998. While at Loras, he also played for the Duhawk men’s basketball team. After working in sales in the private sector for two years, Costello enrolled in graduate school at Western Illinois University. While completing his master’s degree in sport management in 2002, Costello served an internship in marketing and game operations with the Boston Celtics. In the fall of 2002, Northern Iowa hired him as its athletic marketing and promotions assistant, where he worked for a year before earning a promotion to director of athletic marketing and promotions in January 2003. Leon and his wife Heather live in Brookings with their daughter Cailin.

Rob Peterson

Senior Associate Athletic Director-Internal, South Dakota State University Northern Michigan, ‘92 Rob Peterson joined the South Dakota State University in April 2000, as an assistant athletic director for internal operations. Now the Jackrabbits senior associate athletic director for internal affairs, Peterson supervises the Jackrabbit athletic department internal operations, with a primary focus on the day-to-day operations of the department. Peterson also serves as sports supervisor for football, equestrian, baseball, swimming/diving and track/cross country. Before joining the SDSU staff, Peterson served as the coordinator of athletic facilities, events & projects for Fresno State University from 19972000. In this position, Peterson supervised seven athletic venues and the game operations for 10 sports. Prior to his time at Fresno State, Peterson served as assistant director of recreation - facilities & events at Northern Michigan University from 1995-97. This position provided him the opportunity to supervise events and operations for the Superior Dome on the campus of NMU. This facility also houses the United States Olympic Education Center. Peterson started his career at Northern Michigan as the director of sport clubs from 1994-95. Peterson’s collegiate education includes completion of an HVAC certificate program at Northern Michigan in 1981, a Bachelor of Science in physical education & health at NMU in 1992 and a Masters of Arts in Sports Administration from Central Michigan University in 1995. He also completed a collegiate marketing internship with NMU athletics and a professional sports operations internship with the Green Bay Packers, both in 1993. A Marquette, Mich., native, Peterson lives in Brookings with his two chocolate labs, Tucker and Bailey. His primary interests include college football, baseball, softball and ice hockey. Rob also enjoys reading, especially on the topics of professional leadership and history.

Kathy Heylens

Associate Athletic Director-Compliance/SWA, South Dakota State University

Kathy Heylens came to South Dakota State in July 1984 as a member of the staff in the admissions office before moving to athletics two years later as a senior secretary. Heylens became the institution’s first full-time Compliance Coordinator in 1990 and continues those duties as the associate athletic director for compliance and senior woman administrator. Heylens manages all aspects of the athletics compliance program to ensure strict adherence with NCAA, affiliated conferences and university rules and regulations for amateurism, eligibility, recruiting, financial aid, awards and benefits, playing and practice seasons and enforcement. Heylens recently accepted an appointment of a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Legislative Council, which serves as the primary legislative body in the Division I governance structure. She also accepted an appointment to the four-member Legislative Council Administrative Committee, which acts on behalf of the full Legislative Council between meetings to transact routine items of business. She also serves on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Governance Committee. In addition to her day-to-day duties, Heylens serves on the Undergraduate Experience Committee, Diversity Committee, Intercollegiate Athletics Board and Compliance Team. A Watertown, S.D., native, Kathy and her husband, Bill, live in Volga, S.D. and have two grown children.
