HILLCREST ELEMENTARY SPECTRUM GARDEN Brookings, SD This class project was for an interior courtyard redesign at Hillcrest Elementary in Brookings, SD. The courtyard was located in the center of building which made it accessible to all teaching staff and we wanted to make the courtyard a destination for teachers to bring their students to learn while spending time outside. The long, linear courtyard is home to gardening, learning, and space for gathering. The project begin with a two day design charette where two concepts were designed. After a meeting with the teaching staff the curvilinear design was chosen for the autism garden. The curvilinear path is designed to slow the user down and provide small pockets for exploration and the design provides no dead ends in the courtyard. The teaching staff wanted a place where they could teach students in an outdoor setting and provide opportunities for all types of play. The courtyard features an outdoor classroom, raised planing beds, vertical garden, dry creek bed, erosion table, secluded spaces, tunnels to crawl through, vertical hammock pods, and a shallow pond. The Spectrum Garden was a class project and I was responsible for planting design and plant selection. This project helped me to understand the needs of children with autism and how spaces, noise, and colors can either calm them down or make them uncomfortable. Learning to design for children with special needs was valuable experience and working on a real project in a community is rewarding.

SOUTH DAKOTA TRANSECT: 44 DEGREES NORTH ASLA Honor Award in Communications 2016 Student Award This accordion book, produced in a planting design course, argues that planting design and landscape architecture are not mutually exclusive and expands the scope of planting design to include and emphasize the factors that determine the location of native species within a given biome. We developed a simple framework to illustrate the relationship between climate, temperature, precipitation, soil substrate, and water holding capacity and the plant material present in a given location. We chose to cut through the 44th parallel and develop a section through the state of South Dakota. The division holds particular resonance by the fact that the state is almost perfectly situated in the middle of the continental United States, the state itself is divided in half by the Missouri River and we chose to divide the state in half horizontally along the 44th parallel. The resulting accordion book transects the state and elucidates the particular relationships that determine the plant material in a specific locale. As first glance, the state appears to have a fairly homogeneous distribution of plant material, but through this transect, the diversity of plant material across the state is reveled and clearly articulates the differences in plant populations and the reasons those specific species populate the regions across this particular stretch of the Northern Great Plains. Since this project was a group effort we all played an important part in th`e creation of this book. My part in this project included plant information gathering, development of plant lists, and the creation of some plant graphics. This process was very interesting and I learned a lot about the state of South Dakota. The most valuable part of this project is the value of group collaboration and the different insights people can have on a project.

DAKOTA NATURE PARK Brookings, SD The Dakota Nature Park was a Landscape Architecture class collaboration in Brookings, SD. We worked with the faculty at the Dakota Nature Park visitors center to learn more about the structure of the park and how it works with the community. The entire class worked together to gather all research about the site and its surroundings. The project was a full master plan redesign that looked at how we could make the park more successful and encourage more people from the community to spend time in this unique park. The original site was the city of Brookings dump that was capped and turned into a park. Natural vegetation and ponds were introduced to the site and the beginnings of a park were established. The concept for the project developed from loose space planning through several sketched renditions for the primary circulation through the park, We began looking at the sketches working on integrating them into the actual vicinity of park and decided on sub spaces throughout the park. The final master plan included several looped walking trails, a mountain biking park, multiple bodies of water, opportunities for programming such as fishing, biking trails, canoing, kayaking, nature play, picnicking, swamp boardwalk, and viewing fauna in their natural habitat. The park wanted to be a destination for the community of Brookings due to its unique opportunities that are only found in the nature park. The city of Brookings has several parks with the Nature Park being the largest and offering the unique experience in the city limits of Brookings. Through the creation of models and elevation studies the amount of time taken to walk all the loops in the park was determined. Each loop has slight changes in elevation that creates a different experience for each user and provides opportunity for different forms of physical activity. The models helped us to understand the spacial quality of our concepts. My partner and I worked together to produce a design program, master plan, supporting renderings, and overall successful project.

These concepts are the framework for the primary paths and spaces in the Nature Park. We wanted to create looping pathways that interconnect to allow easy way finding, the ability for the user to choose which direction to travel, and provide paths with no dead ends to allow continuous circulation.

TERRY PEAK LONG-RANGE MASTER PLAN Terry Peak Ski Resort Wharf Mine Restoration and facility expansion Lead, SD Terry Peak originated in 1952 but the founders had been skiing the mountain years before. At over 7,100 feet, Terry Peak sees more snow than anywhere in the region. After serving in WW2 the founding members returned home and started the Black Hills Chairlift Company. Originally, their one chairlift was used for a Summer Chairlift Ride business but in 1954 they began their winter ski operations. Years had passed and expansions had occurred and by 1988 Terry Peak had 5 Chairlifts, Day Lodge, and had begun snow making operations. In 1999, The Black Hills Chairlift Company approved a five-year plan to begin improvements on the Mountain. This included a 3,000-square foot sun deck to Stewart Day Lodge, 2 high-speed detachable quad chairlifts which replaced 3 other lifts, a Half-Pipe, a Terrain Park, and purchased a Pipe-Dragon grooming machine. Beginning of the 2004-05 season, Terry Peak began their largest terrain expansion in over 25 years adding over 100 acres in new trails ranging in difficulty. Today, Terry Peak is South Dakota’s largest ski area with over 25 trails, 600 acres of ski able terrain, 4 chairlifts, snow carpet, snow making and grooming equipment, two lodges offering a cafeteria and rentals, and fully certified ski and snowboard instructors plus ski school to ensure a great learning experience. Terry peak is full of exciting winter activities making it the perfect destination for family winter vacation. Terry Peak Ski Resort in the Black Hills has requested assistance in developing a long-range master plan expansion for the land acquired by a land swap with mining operation Gold Corp. The outlook of the project mainly includes the final reclamation phase of the Golden Reward Expansion at the bottom of Gold Corp Express lift number two and inferno ski run. There have been several reclamation projects around the nation that have expanded the use of the once active mine and transformed it into a beautiful area that is accessible for recreation. The goal of this reclamation project is to draw people to Terry Peak resort and make it a family destination in the Black Hills. The project includes expanded and new recreation in the for Terry Peak Ski Resort. New recreation for Terry Peak could include a new lodge, retail village, snow tubing, archery range, amphitheater, connection to snowmobile trails, expansion of ski runs, and a ropes course, to engage visitors of all ages. The redesign will include year-round recreation to bring in people and revenue for Terry Peak. The expansion at the base of the inferno ski run aims to increase the number of people visiting the resort. This project was a large scale resort master plan that allowed us to be creative in our design choices and the use of unique outdoor recreational activities. We learned that large scale planning can be frustrating and getting concepts rolling can be challenging, but the overall experience helped understand the importance of scale and large scale planning.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY AURORA, SD
This project was a Habitat for Humanity project that was designed for the Green family in Aurora, SD. The family wanted a place where they could spend time as a family outdoors. We used a client questionnaire in order to understand what the family wanted in the design and then each group member designed a landscape for the family. The Green family wanted a space for a vegetable garden, a gathering area, a privacy fence, open backyard, and plants that required a minimal amount of maintenance.

COUGHLIN RESIDENCE FINAL PROJECT SIOUX FALLS, SD The second project is the Coughlin residence in Brandon, SD. The owner of this residence is the owner of Oak Ridge Landscape and Nursery. The individual kept the project open, which allowed for maximum creativity with the project. The site had quite a bit of elevation change which proposed a challenge in designing the backyard.

CERAMICS VERTICAL OXI
This piece was made using the stacking method in ceramics. Vertical Oxi was inspired by the lines on a topography map and the asymmetrical shape of the form reminds us that nothing is perfect. I wanted the form to look as if the elements of nature cut and shaped the sculpture. The color was inspired by the oxidation of metal and the splashes of green puckered texture to break up the sheen.

PERFORMANCE ARTS
I have been dancing my whole life and continued that passion for dance in to my college career. For three years I have been involved in a dance partnership with South Dakota State and Expanding Harmony dance school in Brookings. The concert showcases student works of choreography along with few pieces choreographed by the director. This year I had the opportunity to showcase my own choreography and perform it with eleven other dancers. My piece was about climate change and how the more we push against nature the more it will push back.
My experience in performance arts has taught me how to view and move through space. As a dancer, we move in organic ways that can change the perception of space. Thinking about what a space looks like from the floor, from above, on the diagonal, from behind, and from the front. Movement can become complicated when more than two people are involved and understanding how to move people through a space without casualties can be frustrating. Being a dancer has helped me to understand the importance of circulation patterns through space and how movement can evoke different feelings.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL CHILDREN’S INFUSION CENTER + HEMATOLOGY ONCOLOGY CLINIC Omaha, NE This project is at the Children’s Hospital and Medical Center located in Omaha, NE. The project was a collaboration between the senior landscape architecture students and the senior interior design students. The goal was to create a cohesive design by integrating a children’s infusion center and hematology oncology clinic with interior and exterior healing gardens. Through the integration of a healing and fun environment in a children’s hospital setting helps to distract patients from psychological challenges. We had to keep in mind that patients in this environment would range from infants to grown teenagers and the design had to be child friendly not childish. The project occupied the first floor of the children’s hospital and the exterior green space on the lot adjacent to the hospital. The first floor sits on top of a three story parking garage which posed a challenge when connecting the exterior with the interior space. My responsibilities for this project included the design of the exterior garden, exterior garden renderings, site research, environmental psychology theories, mood board, and contributed to the interior design concept. The challenges of designing a hospital setting encouraged our team to communicate and learn about each others ideas. We had to think about how to connect the interior with the exterior while bringing our entire concept to life. Learning to work as a team on this project helped me to understand the benefit of having people from different disciplines contributing to a project. I learned that communication between disciplines in very important in creating a cohesive design proposal.
