Lawrence Public Library 2013

Presented as a mirror to a project currently under construction, the Lawrence Public Library is the new local center for learning, focusing, and relaxing. Situated in Buford Watson Park, its natural but striking form makes a lasting impression on everyone that sees it, driving or walking. Its evoking shape is inspired from the natural topography of the park and allows for several great opportunities for sustainable practices, encouraged from the local population. The new design responds culturally, geographically, and environmentally.

The muse for the new structure was the natural topography, as it dictated the form of the structure. Repeated, concentric curves were a consistent pattern through the whole park as the land tapers toward the pond. For the structure, these curves were simply pushed up by their center, while the ends remained attached to the ground, creating an invisible transition from built to natural environment.

17th and Main: Transit Oriented Development 2015

Kansas City, one of the most innovative and forward thinking cities in the country, is home to the nation’s newest streetcar. Implemented to encourage public transportation in the downtown district, the route will run from the North River Market, through the Crossroads, and to Union Station. With new public transportation, comes enhanced opportunity for urban development. The Crossroads fits as a perfect area to foster this new growth. Known locally as a warehouse district, the Crossroads sits as an underutilized area of downtown, neglecting potential to significantly improve the pedestrian experience. By framing influential moments, the sensation of walking down Main Street will greatly improve. Realized through a series of hand drawn analyses, the new design will be an agent for change for the Crossroads.

Crossroads Community Center 2014

In the midst of the most culturally diverse area of Kansas City, the Crossroads Community Center fills a glaring omission in the district infrastructure. The new structure provides a community auditorium and performance space along with administrative and flexible conference rooms. The design was crafted with sustainability at the heart. Placed on a tight, restrictive, geometric site, the building responds by using negative space to create a positive impact. Its vast, central atrium shuttles both natural daylight and fresh air through the entirety of the facility. The auditorium and performance space is one of the few to allow sunlight to penetrate the interior, but wooden louvers actively respond to create a professional environment. This living

building will become a new, integral piece of the Crossroads culture.

The trapezoidal lot presented many challenges in the design process as it prohibited the structure from growing too large. In order to combat this effect, negative space was installed in the center of what naturally becomes three different spaces acting under one roof. The atrium is able to serve all three, making it an amicable environment at every moment. 18

KCUR is the local branch of the National Public Radio station and is need of a new community engagement tool. Many of their stories and exclusive content revolves around the participation of local people, voicing real opinions. Our studio was responsible for creating a tool, more so an experience, where anyone would feel comfortable to share what is on their mind. The first step in this process was to meet with the client, and clarify how they envision using this device. In a charrette type process, many people presented initial thoughts, comments, and even miniature models of their idea. This served as the first step in a long process of developing a successful community listening device.

24

The next step was to work further on the comments and feedback from the first session. Divided into three groups, the studio moved forward with three ideas. Our idea was inspired by the Hoberman sphere, the toy expanding ball. We discovered that this same joint connection could be used to create lightweight, flexible, and transportable furniture. In storage it remains compact, but when put into use, the system could be used to create any type of basic structural element, for our presentation purposes we constructed a full wall. Although the overwhelming amount of positive feedback seemed to leave our team in the lead, KCUR decided to move forward with a different solution.

25

After weeks of cutting steel, sanding wood, and perfecting the assembly process, the new KCUR community engagement tool reached completion. The final solution consisted of three pieces: Boxes, Frames, and Handouts. The modular boxes, constructed of aluminum and wood, display interchangeable panels that could be changed to fit any event (and they light up). The A-frame, consisting of a chalkboard, shelf, display panel, and aluminum skeleton, presents KCUR with an eyegrabbing and innovative way to

grow their brand. Lastly, KCUR was presented with wooden amplifiers for cellphones, constructed using a CNC router. Overall, KCUR was extremely happy with the result and continue to use these tools at their events.

Before starting the design process for the final project, it is important to examine relevant precedents to inform your decisions and rationale. Two examples: the Espana Library (above) and the Kunsthaus-Bregenz Museum (below) provide unique design solutions that can be transformed to fit other environments. Models are perhaps the best way to understand how all of these features work together, while also creating a beautiful piece of art.

The photos above showcase a chair I constructed, completely from pieces of trash in a scrapyard, with homage to the St. Louis City Museum. Aesthetically, the chair captures the emotion of the City Museum, finding beauty in forgotten materials. The seat made from an old fan is actually comfortable too! 29
