FROM THE OFFICES OF ALUMNI AND MARKETING

Becky Greer I love each issue of JAAM that we work on. Hopefully this issue makes you feel part of the bustling energy at JA. In addition to some of the regular features, this issue showcases JA alumni as authors, writers, and editors. Even if you are not an English major you will see how important an English background is in the varied occupations represented. One proud moment has followed another, and 20132014 was no exception.

• Jackson Academy was selected as an Apple

• The community celebrated Peter Jernberg’s

26 years of service and his retirement as JA president. • Cliff Kling has been named as Mr. Jernberg’s successor. Cliff and his wife, Heather, have two daughters at JA, Ainsley and Alise.

Distinguished School.

Once again “Class Notes” reflects on the alumni and their successes, as well as the success of JA in preparing bright, capable young people. At left are JA’s newest medical school graduates: Drs. Caleb Graham ‘06, Colette Jackson ‘06, Charlotte Skelton Taylor ‘06, Ashley Winford ‘06, and Jack Murray ‘05.

Patti Wade Dear JA Community and Friends, It has been my pleasure to work with Becky Greer in Alumni Relations on the previous issue of the JAAM and on this current issue. As we have collaborated over the last eighteen months, we have decided to shift the publication date of the JAAM to the summer so we can include an entire academic year in one publication. This “Year In Review” model captures the events of one academic year rather than parts of two academic years. The JAAM issue you are reading today will include the latter part of the 2012-2013 year and the entire 2013-14 year. Beginning with our July 2015 issue, the JAAM will feature news and events from the 2014-15 year alone. We are grateful for your support of and interest in Jackson Academy. We hope the current issue of JAAM updates you on current JA happenings and brings back fond memories. Warmly,

Patti Wade Director of Marketing and Communications 601.364.5702 pwade@jacksonacademy.org

Thanks always to the patrons, alumni, teachers, staff, and grandparents who continuously give back to the school with their volunteer hours, time, commitment, and support. You always inspire me. With deep respect and admiration,

FROM THE HEADMASTER As we complete a very successful school year, it benefits us to look back as well as envision our future. Jackson Academy, under the direction of the Board of Trustees, completed a five-year strategic plan this year. The plan included 53 objectives in the areas of instruction, learning support, curriculum development, professional development, arts, communications, and personal growth activities. Although too many to name, these ranged from the development of full day kindergarten and pre-kindergarten to a technology one-to-one program, placing technology in the hands of all students for the purpose of instruction. Of the 53 objectives set forth, 37 were completed. Of those not completed, some were determined not needed, and the remainder will be rolled onto the next planning cycle that will begin this next school term. Although the new strategic cycle has not officially started, several conceptual topics have emerged that will be the basis for planning future developments and improvements for the students of Jackson Academy. Among these areas are student support services, project-based instruction, and further development of character and spiritual-based programs. Student support planning will include additional development of counseling and advising services, including developmental, academic, parental, and personal counseling services and

2014 JAAM

programs. Also, learning support programs will be enhanced, for academic needs and direction. As we further integrate technology into the instructional process, more “hands-on educational opportunities will be developed and employed. Project-based instruction will continue to improve as new and exciting ways to use technology to serve teaching and learning are developed, giving students deeper experiences in learning and understanding. In the 21st century, leadership will continue to become a more demanded skill from our graduates. With this in mind, our next plan will develop an intentional servant leadership program, developed around identifying existing programs and developing additional character skill-based opportunities for our students. Although in the discussion stages, this promises to be a unique and exciting opportunity for all Jackson Academy students. Our next strategic plan, although just beginning, promises to be as progressive, serviceable, and exciting as the one just completed. We expect additional areas of planning to emerge as the process begins. Jackson Academy strives to offer superior independent education for our students, developing future citizens, grounded in ethics and solid character traits, who will lead in a global society.

SOUTHERN STAR A POWERFUL, YET HUMBLE LEGACY How do you measure the mark of a leader? Is it one’s dream for an organization’s future? The gift for building cohesive teams? Persistence in the face of challenge? The ability to accomplish a plan? Fortunately, the students, families, alumni, faculty, and administration of Jackson Academy have enjoyed the tenure of a leader with all of these qualities—and more. Over the last 26 years, Peter Jernberg has molded JA into one of the Southeast’s premier educational institutions and left an indelible mark that has touched multiple generations. In the late 1980s, JA’s board believed the timing was right to elevate the school’s already distinctive educational approach, and they needed a leader who could strategically clarify JA’s unique role in Mississippi and the greater region. The board sought a head of school who first and foremost was a person of faith. They wanted a leader who valued—but could build upon—the existing rich heritage and success of JA, and who had a vision to foster an educationally progressive, independent school environment.

With the assistance of retiring JA Headmaster Glenn Cain and others, the board lured Jernberg from his position at Indianola Academy, a place where he and his family could have comfortably remained for his entire career. “We loved Indianola, and we loved Indianola Academy,” said Jernberg. “It was a step of faith to come to Jackson. I came in anxious, wondering as a child of the Delta if I could relate to the people of northeast Jackson. What I found is that some of the most successful people in our state were also the most down to earth, humble, well-grounded people.” Jernberg’s dedicated and joyful leadership at Mississippi’s largest independent school has achieved exactly what the Board of Trustees envisioned when the group selected him in 1988. Today, he leaves a legacy of not only having met the objectives they envisioned, but also a legacy within the hearts of the entire JA family. Students who became alumni and who—as parents —now desire the JA experience for their own children point to Jernberg’s leadership as a powerful force in creating a remarkable school culture.

LIKE THE RISING AND SETTING OF THE SUN

“It is so easy to be inconsistent. I can count on one hand the people who have stable, consistent integrity, and Peter is one of them,” said Dr. Mark A. Elgart, president and chief executive officer of AdvancED, the world’s largest school accreditation organization.

Several hundred colleagues and friends attended retirement celebrations honoring Peter Jernberg held April 9 and 10 in the Gallery of the Performing Arts Center. Jernberg was joined at the events by his wife, Pat, daughter, Jenny Hughley, and her husband, Brian.

Lower School student art decorated the Gallery at the reception. Students expressed appreciation to Mr. Jernberg for the things he had done for JA, with each student mentioning something for which they were thankful.

Consistency is a hallmark of Peter Jernberg’s success. Measuring ideas against best practices in education, he worked alongside others to make the early dreams of the trustees a reality. I give much credit to the people who served with me,” said Jernberg. “The board of trustees, academic deans, Dr. Pat Taylor, Cliff Kling, and so many others...these talented men and women continually think about how we can best serve students and families who entrust their students to us.” “So many worked in key roles with me throughout my administration and their dedicated service contributed greatly to the excellence of Jackson Academy. These include Keith Branning, Bill Bunch, Bobby West, Nancy Alford, Lamar Chustz, Lynette Robinson, Catherine Wallace, Mary Donnelly, Tim McWilliams, Nora Tannehill, Linda Purviance, Sarah Love, DeLeslie Porch, and more,” he said.

Time invested in the development of sound governance has led to productive board groups that Jernberg believes have been “good stewards” of JA. The development of a campus master plan, including expansion into a nearly 11-acre track of land adjacent to the school, enabled JA to pursue enhancements to facilities, parking, and fields while remaining within the City of Jackson. Two capital campaigns—the most recent resulting in the Performing Arts Center, considered one of the premier venues in the Metro area—ensured sustainable financial growth while also developing community life of JA.

Trustees and administrators alike have noted that Jernberg’s leadership is the sort you read about in textbooks. His kindness, ability to diffuse tension, and gift for saying the right thing at the right time have all gained him the respect of the school, the community, and educational colleagues from across the nation. “Peter has that uncanny ability to bring consensus to a meeting without compromising anyone else’s position,” said David Derrick, former executive director of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS). “You can count on his consistency like the rising and setting of the sun,” said Don Breazeale, currently an advisory

“YOU HAVE TO CATCH THEM BEING GOOD.” Peter Jernberg always has something uplifting to say. On campus he may walk to the PAC to compliment a singer for a song he enjoyed, then head to the gym to commend an athlete for a good game, followed by a pass through an office to encourage an employee for extra effort. He models a culture of praise that permeates the JA community. His example reminds each person to raise his or her own level of thought and to be positive in all interactions. Former board chair and educator Jane Hederman noted in Jackson Academy: The First Fifty Years 1959-2009 that Jernberg utilizes each conversation as a “teachable moment.” “Oh, you may not realize it at the time of your discussion because he has such a humble spirit about him. He listens, and even though he may have thought through the situation prior to your meeting and have an answer in the back of his mind, he gives you the impression that he values your point of view. And he does,” she said.

“So often, as a Board member I would come away from our visits realizing: I just learned a valuable lesson.” Known for years as an announcer at sporting events, both at JA and Indianola Academy, Jernberg again brings his positive mind-set. He exudes good sports-

A scholarship honoring Peter Jernberg was announced at an April Board of Trustees event celebrating his 26 years of leadership at Jackson Academy. On June 1, Jernberg began his service as president emeritus. The James Peter Jernberg, Jr. Scholarship is aimed at attracting, retaining, and recognizing students with outstanding academic performance who also have demonstrated financial need. This scholarship will cover full tuition, fees, and other costs to attend Jackson Academy. “It is my distinct honor and privilege, on behalf of the Jackson Academy Board of Trustees, to announce that this scholarship shall henceforth and forevermore be known as the James Peter Jernberg, Jr. Scholarship and its award recipients will be designated Jernberg Scholars,” said Walter Weems, board attorney and former board chair. “Because of the life changing impact it will have for the students receiving it, it is only fitting that this scholarship bear a name worthy of its high purpose and standing.” The scholarship has been partially endowed, though additional gifts are being sought to sustain it. It will be announced in the Greater Jackson community this fall, and the first awards will be made for students beginning with the 2015–16 school year. Students selected for the scholarship must be entering fifth through eleventh grade, must be in the top five percent of their class, and must also show enthusiasm for and motivation toward maximizing his or her educational opportunities. Once the scholarship is fully implemented, grades five through eight will typically have one scholarship recipient per grade and grades nine through twelve will have two recipients per grade. The scholarship will allow twelve outstanding, academically gifted, deserving students to attend Jackson Academy who otherwise might not be able to attend. More information will be distributed in the fall of 2014 about how to apply for the James Peter Jernberg, Jr. Scholarship for the 2015-16 school year.

Jernberg has also served as a formal and informal mentor to many in independent education, providing knowledgeable counsel that helped others become better administrators. “Peter touched my life immediately and helped me grow from a boy to a man,” said Elgart. “I’ve known him, trusted him, and believed in him.” Mentoring his successor, Cliff Kling, has been a natural for Peter Jernberg. JA Earns Distinction For Technology

Gov. Phil Bryant spoke at Jackson Academy during the Apple Distinguished School program in January 2014 where JA was recognized as an exemplary learning environment. The Governor commented on the benefits technology brings to education and the role of teachers in student success.

State, city, and Apple officials joined the JA community in celebrating the Apple Distinguished School designation, including (from left) Mayor’s transition team member Rocky Wilkins, Councilman Quentin Whitwell, JA Headmaster Pat Taylor, JA President-Elect Cliff Kling, Gov. Phil Bryant, JA President Peter Jernberg, JA Dean of Technology Eddie Wettach, Apple representatives Monte Rector, Neill Hitchcock, Lyn Stanfield, and JA Board Chair John Lundy.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant spoke on campus January 22 during a ceremony held to announce that JA had been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2013–2015. Students, faculty, and administrative representatives joined the Governor, Apple representatives, and local dignitaries on stage before a packed auditorium of students, faculty, trustees, and friends of JA. The celebratory event was streamed live into Middle, Lower, and Preschool classrooms, as well as to parents, alumni, and friends off campus.

2013–15 Charlie Patton, Tech Center administrator, and Eddie Wettach, JA dean of technology, were instrumental in efforts to meet the criteria to receive the Apple Distinguished School designation.

At Jackson Academy, each student has an Apple device (Macbook Air, iPad or iPod Touch), making the school an Apple one-to-one environment. JA was the first school in the Southeast to implement the Apple one-to-one program in kindergarten through twelfth grades.

The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for one-to-one programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence, and demonstrate a clear vision of exemplary learning environments. JA is among a select number of schools worldwide to have achieved this designation.

His research was done for a company in California involving problems florists have with ivy geraniums being negatively affected by high temperatures. In a first effort to understand the heat stress response to a crop plant, his team cloned the Heat Shock Protein 90 (HSP90) from Pelargonium peltatum, which is made up of 699 amino acids. Hunter hopes to use his wide range of experiences in the field at Disney World as well as his skills developed in education classes to help students learn to problem solve, find a passion for the sciences, and grow into successful young adults. Steven McCartney showed him the challenges, problems, and spectacular power of nature in his biology class. Coach Ray Higgins was his mentor in cross-country who taught him to push himself and to always do his best no matter how difficult a challenge. Finally, Bruce Sumrall challenged him to think outside the box. Hunter cannot wait to follow in their footsteps.

With his computer science degree from Georgia Tech tucked in his back pocket, Bill will—and can—tackle just about any problem tossed his way. He’s graphed gantry control hardware logs, ripped apart and reassembled electronic document databases, and mapped, aligned, and analyzed oil and gas pipeline inspections. Needless to say, he stays pretty busy at the Ranch— although he did take time off from developing to co-write Android course materials as well as a book, Android Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide. Bill’s languages of choice are Python, C, C#, and Java, and he’s also handy with iOS audio development. He has a fondness for wiener dogs, book reading, and his newfound diversion of piano playing. And as if that all weren’t enough, in his spare time he makes, modifies. or destroys the following: music, food, vacuum tube amplifiers, and electric guitar stomp boxes.

ACADEMIC UPDATES PRESCHOOL

LOWER SCHOOL

GRADES

1st - 4th

In 2011, Jackson Academy added art as one of the Preschool special subjects. PK and K students come to art once a week in small groups for more specific instruction in this area.

Grades one through four experience rich tradition coupled with the latest innovation in the new Lower School model

Refocused with a special emphasis on the youngest elementary students in grades one through four, Jackson Academy’s new Lower School blends the traditions of JA with 21st century concepts. Although visitors to the Lower School will still find such long-standing favorites as the Little House program in third grade, Little Dribblers and Squanto Day in second grade, and the Thanksgiving Feast in first grade, the curriculum now incorporates the daily use of iPads in the classroom, a focus on the latest science concepts through the STEM Lab (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), and an increased development of number sense using Singapore Math.

ACADEMIC The children are exposed to many aspects of art including watercolor, clay, tempera paint, drawing, mosaics, and other simple art projects. Classical music by Mozart and Bach plays each week while the children are working on their projects.

In addition, each year local artists are invited to come to the Preschool for a presentation. The children get to meet them and learn about their specific art medium. Recent artists have included Wyatt Waters, Grace Buchanan, and Alice Reilly. Famous artists are presented in art class, too. In the kindergarten classes Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, and others are introduced. The kindergarten classes paint Monet sunflowers. In PK, students paint circles much like Matisse did.

JA believes that when students learn the basic elements of drawing, they gain confidence in being more creative in all elements of art class. The most important thing in art class is self-expression. It’s wonderful to see each piece of art and the way a child interprets his or her artwork.

In our second year of the Apple one-to-one technology implementation, Lower School students now take all of their Accelerated Reader tests on their iPads. They are also perfecting their skill with Keynote presentation software as well as the wide variety of apps that are available on their iPads. Technology is so well integrated into the classroom that it would now be difficult to learn without it!

The new Lower School STEM lab buzzes with excitement each day as students work in groups of four to complete various science activities. Second and third graders visit the lab twice during a six-day rotation while fourth graders go three times. Even the first graders enjoy a visit to the lab once a month. Singapore Math, another new addition to the Lower School, began this year with first graders completely immersed in the program while the older grades have incorporated Singapore strategies as JA rolls out the program one year at a time. Singapore Math builds understanding with concrete-pictorial-abstract learning. Concepts are introduced through the handson use of manipulatives. Then, students visualize the concept and represent it pictorially through models like number bonds and bar models. Abstract numbers and symbols are used only after students have enough context to understand what they mean. Tradition and innovation—JA’s Lower School balances the best of both worlds. Come visit us and experience the joy!

ACADEMIC UPDATES UPPER SCHOOL

ROBOTICS

MIDDLE SCHOOL Jackson Academy’s Middle School faculty and staff worked diligently in the new division’s inaugural year to meet diverse student needs one child at a time. The new middle school philosophy seeks to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and trying new things without fear of failure.

The Middle School builds on a long tradition of excellence in teaching and learning while implementing new programs and pedagogy to increase students’ engagement and opportunities.

John Hugh Tate, JA chaplain, leads a chapel service.

During the last three years, Jackson Academy has made strides in creating a 21 st century learning environment that sets us apart in our community, state, and region.

C UPDATES Students and teachers continue to use technology to increase communication and collaboration among teachers, students, and parents; to make the learning process more effective and efficient; and to allow students to demonstrate mastery of content in new and exciting ways.

Faculty have observed a great deal of excitement in students’ first year in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) labs. Coupled with a supporting, robust curriculum, the labs expose students to science, math, and other subjects, such as robotics engineering, in ways that are fun and engaging. The kinesthetic experiences offered in STEM ignite the interest of students, helping them connect concepts to real world application. In robotics, for example, students build and program robots to respond to motion, touch, sound, distance, or light. Students become intimately familiar with the science and math behind subjects such as rocketry, applied physics, alternative energy, chemical reactions, and simple machines. Through STEM, students’ 21st century skills of critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration will be well established in Middle School, and they will be ready to learn these subjects more deeply when they enter Upper School. As we affirm the importance of effective communication as a 21st century skill, JA seeks to prepare all learners to communicate their thoughts and ideas across a variety of platforms to diverse audiences. For this reason, the Middle School has increased language arts instruction in the core curriculum to 100 minutes a day for all grades. This was accomplished by adding a literature class in seventh grade and a speech/communication class in eighth grade. 2014 JAAM

Although incorporating technology into our teaching and learning has been a big part of these advances, this year the Upper School introduced a number of new course electives that provide a very low-tech, highly traditional way of thinking and relating to each other.

JA Chaplain John Hugh Tate taught one of the new courses. In his course, A Biblical Worldview in a 21st Century World, he focused on two essential questions: “What is the world we are living in today really like?” and “How should a Christian live in this world?” The students in this course were provided a Biblical basis for moving forward and being effective in their future.

In another new course called Financial Management, Bronwyn Burford introduced our students to financial concepts and encouraged them to develop an awareness of how these financial concepts fit into their lives on a personal level. There is no doubt that the exposure to these concepts will help JA students be prepared for the future, no matter what career path they take. Lastly, the 2013–14 school year saw the return of Select Choir. With it, our performing arts offerings became more well rounded, providing an option to the JA student population for a performing ensemble that involves very little time outside the school day. Katie Shores, JA’s choral director, stated that “students involved in Select Choir were very quick to continue the tradition of excellence that has been established in the Choral Department and across the campus of Jackson Academy.” 21

PERFORMING ARTS PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT CONTINUES TO GROW In early October, the Jackson Academy Performing Arts Department presented Little Shop of Horrors in the school’s 800-seat performance hall. This was the third collaboration for the directing team of Stacey Overstreet and Katie Shores. This musical featured an extremely talented cast of approximately 25 ninth through twelfth graders, as well as a six-piece orchestra and crew of 10. Audience members enjoyed the sci-fi tale of Seymour, Audrey, and of course the mammoth plant, Audrey II. With music by Alan Menken, a fabulous set, and clever humor, this perfectly-cast production was a delightfully disturbing experience. In the spring, audiences enjoyed the Jackson Academy Middle School Theatre Department’s presentation of Disney’s Aladdin, Jr. A cast of over 70 first through eighth grade students brought this epic tale to life. It truly was a magical experience for all involved. Also in the spring, theatre-goers enjoyed a very successful performance of The Bad Seed, which took place in the Black Box Theatre. The talented cast brought some interesting questions and thought processes to light during the all-too-real portrayal of this tale. Audience members were impressed with the caliber of talent, set design, and overall effectiveness of the plot. QUALITY

Select Choir began the choral season with a Fall Choral Concert, showcasing classical, jazz, and folk styles. Showtime and Encore joined Select Choir to present a classical Christmas concert at Trinity Presbyterian Church. The three ensembles joined together twice more in the spring, for the Spring Spectacular and the Spring Choral Concert. In competition, the Choral Department continued to shine. Select Choir competed at William Carey University receiving a Superior rating in performance and an Excellent in sight-reading. Showtime brought home first place, Best Vocals, and Best Overall Effect from the Jackson Prep Showchoir Masters. They also received first place, Best Vocals, Best Choreography, and Best Overall Effect at the Purvis Invitational. Encore received second runner-up in division and third runner-up in finals at the Jackson Prep Showchoir Masters, second runner-up at the South Jones Invitational, second runner-up in division and second runner-up in finals at the Purvis Invitational, and first place at the Petal Invitational. Encore finished the season third runner-up overall at FAME, Orlando. The JA Choral Department also hosted the Second Annual Jackson Academy Showchoir Invitational in February. Sixteen groups plus family and fans entered our campus to enjoy this event. No matter what your experience level or desire, the Jackson Academy Performing Arts Department is a great place to join in, find your niche, and call home.

BAND BAND ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO REACH THEIR POTENTIAL The Jackson Academy Band Program provides sixth through twelfth grade students with opportunities to learn instrumental music, develop maturity and poise through performance, improve leadership skills, and gain confidence in their own capabilities. During the marching season, in addition to contributing to the JA spirit at pep rallies and football games, the Marching Band competed at the Clinton Arrow Invitational and the Pearl Invitational Marching Championship, competing against much larger bands from public and independent schools around the region. They garnered numerous accolades, including all Superior ratings for Band, Guard, and Percussion; Best in Class at both events; and numerous caption awards. At the Bands of America Indianapolis Super Regional Championship, where JA was the smallest group, the band earned third place in Class A. In addition to Marching Band, students also participate in Concert Band and Jazz Band. The concert band received all Superior ratings in the Central Mississippi Concert Band Festival at Ridgeland High School and the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Concert Band Festival. The Jazz Band performed at the Features Pageant and other campus events, as well as the Township Jazz Festival and at Mediterranean Fish and Grill.

Over the past two decades, the JA Band program has earned a national reputation for excellence and innovation. The Winter Guard had an undefeated season, and the group was named Mississippi Indoor Association Class Champions, having earned the highest score of all groups. The guard also traveled to Nashville to compete at the WGI Regional Championship, where they were named Class Champions.

BOA

JA students Will Tribble, Tyler McClellan, Samantha Hill, and Caroline Burford auditioned for the 2014 Mississippi All-State Lions Band. Samantha and Caroline earned spots in the band, which will travel to Toronto in July. Over the past two decades, the JA Band program has earned a national reputation for excellence and innovation. Starting in 1990, the JA Marching Band has been named Bands of America (BOA) Regional Class Champions 14 times, in St. Louis, Atlanta, San Antonio, and Indianapolis. At the BOA Grand National Championships, held each year in Indianapolis, the JA Band has earned three second place National Class A titles and two BOA Grand National Class A Championships, in 1993 and 2004. The JA Band remains one of only two Class A bands to be named a Grand National Finalist (one of the top 12 bands regardless of Class). Through a nurturing environment where each student is encouraged to reach his or her highest potential, the Jackson Academy Band program will continue to succeed in its goal of music education and life skills development. 2014 JAAM

XXX Remembering

Joseph Chatman 1953-2014

Joseph Chatman

worked as a security officer at Jackson Academy under the school’s arrangement with Pendleton Security. He was a friendly, familiar face to the many students who passed through JA’s gates each day. The students called him Mr. Joseph. During the years he was at JA, he developed close friendships with students, faculty, and parents. He was a supporting, calming presence and was a beloved member at the JA community. He will always be remembered for his smile, his wave, and his loving heart.

JACKSON ACADEMY CELEBRATES GIVING 2013–14 GIFTS TO THE JACKSON ACADEMY ANNUAL FUND The Jackson Academy Annual Fund is the cornerstone of annual giving and is the most important fundraising priority at Jackson Academy. With the majority of the total dollars raised going toward the school’s operating budget, the Annual Fund is vital to providing the best educational experience for our students. We are grateful for the opportunity to thank our generous Jackson Academy families and friends for making a great JA education even better. The donors listed showed their commitment to the school through gifts totaling more than $325,000 to the JA Annual Fund. Through their financial support, they have made an incredible difference for students and faculty today and in the future. We are deeply appreciative of their contributions.

The JA Annual Fund continues to offer the many extras for students and faculty above what tuition dollars can provide. At any given moment across the JA campus students are utilizing equipment and programs purchased through annual giving. Throughout the school year the families and friends of Jackson Academy are extremely generous to so many areas of the school. Their support of JA is exhibited in both volunteerism and financial donations. Gifts listed were received between June 1, 2013, and May 31, 2014.

Workforce of the future… Students learn to think and act like scientists in STEM labs

Students work in teams of four following a NASA crew model in second through fourth grade STEM labs. Serving as commander, materials specialist, information specialist, or communication specialist, students develop skills of communication and collaboration while observing how their contributions affect the results of the entire team.

Seventh and eighth grade curriculum includes robotics engineering where students work in teams of two to build and program robots.

HANDS-ON LEARNING In the most recent academic year, second through eighth graders all experienced science class in the three new hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) labs. This fall, first grade science will include one visit per week to STEM lab. The Lower School STEM teacher also introduces STEM concepts to kindergarten students in their classrooms. The labs, coupled with a supporting, robust curriculum, expose students to science, math, and other subjects, such as robotics engineering, in ways that are fun and engaging. The approach fosters in students abilities necessary for success in the 21 st century, such as collaboration and critical thinking, while developing science and math knowledge. “Students will spend most of their time learning science by actually doing science. They will learn to think and act like scientists,” explained Barbara Neely, science faculty member who was instrumental in the development of STEM at JA. “Multiple studies have shown that students retain knowledge longer and better when they learn through all of their senses (sight, hearing, smell,

taste, and especially, touch). When students follow the scientific method, they develop the ability to observe their world more critically and ask pertinent questions.” Such experiences promote deeper understanding and long-term retention. “Exploration in STEM curriculum enables students to make sense of the math and science they previously had learned in isolation,” said Pat Taylor, headmaster. “In STEM, the subjects are brought together, often through the use of technology, in hands-on, real-world applications that show students how and why things work. STEM is a course where the proverbial light bulb comes on in the minds of most students.” In the end, it all comes back to preparing students for their future. “The STEM labs and robotics curriculum are designed to ignite and stimulate the intellectual curiosity and creativity possessed by all children. By encouraging and promoting student engagement and autonomy over their own learning, the STEM experience helps students become life-long learners,” said Cliff Kling, JA president.
