Board of Trustees Sam R. Barnes, Chairperson (2008/2020)
Samuel Barnes is Executive Vice President - Chief Operating Officer of Commonwealth Associates, Inc., an EC&M Magazine 2017 Top 40 Design Engineering Firm headquartered in Jackson Michigan. A graduate of Hanover-Horton High School, Barnes completed a transfer program at Jackson Community College before continuing on to the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and an MBA with distinction. In his role at Commonwealth, he manages the operations of the company and is on the Board of Directors. Committed to his community, Barnes has been a member of the Cascades Lions Club since 1998, serving terms as President, Secretary, and Board Member. Barnes also has volunteered to share career information about engineering with the Explorers. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves from 1986-’92. Barnes is the father of three children, all of whom have attended Jackson College. John M. Crist, Vice Chairperson (2006/2018) John Crist retired in the summer of 2017 after serving as President and Chief executive officer of CP Federal Credit Union for 20 years. Previously he had worked for 29 years for Consumers Energy in various accounting and benefits roles. He is an alumnus of Jackson Community College, and he earned his bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University in business and accounting. He is active in numerous service organizations. He served as a past campaign chair and president of the board of United Way, serves on the board for the March of Dimes District Office in Lansing, Cascades Park Improvement Committee, Lions Club in Parma/Spring Arbor, Kiwanis Jackson Hosts Club, Business Network International, and the Sparks Foundation Board. He served on the board of Western Schools for 11 years. Trustee Crist is married to his lovely wife Jan and has two children, a son and a daughter, and four grandchildren Matthew R. Heins, Trustee (2008/2020) A lifelong resident of Jackson, Matthew Heins graduated from Hanover-Horton High School in 1985. He attended Jackson College for two years before transferring to Michigan State University where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. In 1992, he returned to school at Western Michigan University and completed a master’s degree in public administration in 1995. Mr. Heins was hired by the Jackson Police Department in 1989. He worked various assignments beginning with patrol and worked his way through the ranks until being appointed as Chief of Police in December 2007. In 2011 he was assigned additional responsibility as the Fire Chief under the title Director of Police and Fire Services. He retired from that position in December 2016 to become security manager for Henry Ford Allegiance Health in Jackson, MI. He is a past graduate of the Leadership Academy, Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command, and the FBI National Academy. He has been an adjunct professor at Jackson College as well as Siena Heights University. His involvement within the community is diverse having served in various capacities in local organizations. Within the Northwest Jackson Kiwanis Club he has served as a member, a board member, and as board president. He has also been a member of the Elks and served on their board. In December 2007, he completed his ninth year as a board member for Cascades Humane Society; for two of those years, he was the board president. Philip E. Hoffman, Trustee (2004/2022) Philip Hoffman was first elected to the Jackson College Board of Trustees in 2004, 2010 and again in 2016. He is a small business owner and former elected legislator for the State of Michigan. He graduated from Lumen Christi High School and earned an associate degree majoring in law enforcement from Jackson College and a bachelor of science in criminal justice from Ferris State University.
Mr. Hoffman founded and operated Hoffman Legislative Consultants from 2003 until merging his company with Quadrant Consulting Group in 2016 and currently serves as a partner in the business. He served as a Michigan Senator from 1993-2003, was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1983-1993 and was a deputy sheriff with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department from 1974-1982. In the community, he was Chairman of both the Land O' Lakes and Great Sauk Trail of the Boy Scouts of America and chaired the campaign to save Camp Teetankah. He formerly served as president of the Jackson College Alumni Association, was a member of the Jackson College Foundation, and received the "Distinguished Service Award" from Jackson College. Currently, he serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors at American 1 Credit Union, Vice Chairman of the Beaver Island Boat Company, member of the Board of Trustees of the Michigan Legislative Retirement System and a member of the Board of the Michigan Braille Transcribing Fund. Mr. Hoffman and his wife Dennise have three grown sons and three grandchildren. Donna Lake, Treasurer (2012/2018) Donna Lake has been a resident of Jackson, Michigan most of her life. She moved from her home state of Colorado at the age of 5; however, she feels that Jackson is her real hometown. She and her husband, Jon, have been married for over 40 years. Their daughter, Erica Bills and granddaughter Chloe Bills live in Haslett, MI. Their daughter Michelle and her husband Jordan Smithers, live in Sylvania OH. Trustee Lake is a retired Jackson Public Schools elementary teacher. She received her Associate’s Degree from Jackson College, a Bachelor of Science from Eastern Michigan University, and a master’s degree in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College in Detroit. She taught hearing impaired children for 12 years, grades K-6, then finished her career by teaching fourth-grade students for 20 years. Trustee Lake has been a member of the Jackson County Medical Society Alliance for 16 years, and served as president from 2010-2013. She is currently serving as President of the Michigan State Medical Society Alliance (MSMSA). She has been on the Jackson Symphony Guild board since 2009 and held the office of Guild President from 2011-2013. Trustee Lake is an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, is a volunteer at The Dahlem Center and with the Jackson County Master Gardening Association. She loves golfing, gardening, quilting, painting, bicycle riding and spending time with her family and friends. Dr. Edward A. Mathein, Trustee (1998/2022) Dr. Edward Mathein is the retired president of Mathein, Slete and Associates, DDS, PC, and practiced dentistry in Jackson for 50 years. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School, earned an Associate in Science from Jackson Community College, and his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Detroit. He also attended the L.D. Pankey Dental Research Institute from 1986-1996. Dr. Mathein offers his services at the Center for Family Health Dental Clinic. Active in his profession, Dr. Mathein was president of the Jackson District Dental Society in 1979-1980; Michigan Dental Association Ethics chair, 1986-1997; American Dental Association, 1967-Present; Chicago Dental Society, 1975-Present; Academy of General Dentistry 1971-Present; and was Jackson County United Way Dental Professionals chair from 19801981 and 2008-Present. In the community, he has served on the board of directors for the Jackson Jaycees; served as Jackson County/Michigan Heart Association fund-raising co-chair in 1996-1997; served as Starr Commonwealth Jackson Division Advisory Council chair in 1997- 1998; served on the Jackson County Intermediate School District Health Professions Advisory Council from 1978-2006; served as JCC Alumni Association board member 1983-1990 and president from 1989-1990; served as JCC Foundation board member from 1990-1997 and president from 1995-1997; Member of Jackson Host Lions Club since 1971 and held all office chairs, including President.
For his notable service contributions, he has received the Ethelene Jones Crockett Distinguished Alumni Award from JCC, 1996; was nominated for Jackson Citizen of the Year, 1996; and received both the Jackson Host Lions Distinguished Service award for 2010-2011 and Lion of the Year award for the Central District in 2017. Dr. Mathein has served as a Jackson College Trustee since 1998 and was Board Chair from 2008-2012. Additionally, he has represented JC on the Michigan Community College Association Board since 2008 and was the MCCA State Treasurer from 2008-2012. He and his wife Jeanine have two married daughters; Ann Marie Benjamin (Robert) and Lori Anne Wetzel (Tony). They also have five grandchildren; four girls and a boy – Emily, Rachel, Anna, Sydney and Anthony. Sheila A. Patterson, Secretary (2007/2020) Sheila Patterson has worked for Consumers Energy since January 2002. A 1987 graduate of Lumen Christi High School in Jackson, MI, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from Spring Arbor College in 1993 and a Master’s degree in Business Administration in 2001 from Spring Arbor University. Ms. Patterson currently works in Business Services Performance Management. Committed to her community, Ms. Patterson has been a Trustee at Jackson College since 2008. She has been appointed to the City of Jackson’s Civil Service Commission since 2006. She is a member of the CMS Club of Consumers Energy and NAACP. She has been a member of the Michigan Chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy since 2002. She served on the National Scholarship Committee and has acted as the Mid-west Regional Coordinator through August 2015. She served as the local chapters Vice President from 2008- 2014 and the Chair of the Scholarship Committee from 2006 – 2014. She previously served on Jackson Public School Board from 2004-2012 and was the board President in 2012. She has served on the Salvation Army, Family Services and Children’s Aid and City of Jacksons’ Parks and Recreation Board. She was recently honored with the 2016 Spring Arbor University Professional Excellence Alumni Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize alumni who have made outstanding contributions to their profession and community. In 2015, she was the keynote speaker for Spring Arbor University’s Commencement for graduate programs. She was the recipient of Jackson College’s 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Medal of Service Award. She received a community service award in 2009 from the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club/Jackson Chapter and received a Prism Award for exemplary diversity achievements from Consumers Energy in 2005. She was a Young Careerist Nominee from the Jackson Business & Professional Women’s Organization in 2004. Ms. Patterson is a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. In her spare time, she loves spending time with her family, friends and her dog Miles, and enjoys traveling.
