Worried about paying for college? Don’t forget financial aid! Interested in going to college but not sure how to pay for it? Financial assistance is available for those who qualify! Financial aid is the commonly used term for money to help with college expenses. The U.S. Department of Education should be the first source to figure financial aid. Aid is also available from scholarships and grants from state governments, schools, employers, individuals, private companies, nonprofits, religious groups and professional organizations.
Aid may be used to cover school expenses, including tuition and fees, books and supplies, and transportation. The amount received is based on a person’s need, as determined by federal guidelines. “When applying for financial aid and submitting it to your school choice(s), it allows them to evaluate your information
TYPES OF AID Most students receive some kind of financial aid. Financial assistance can be: • Grants – money that doesn’t have to be paid back • Scholarships – money that doesn’t have to be paid back • Work-study – money you earn for part-time work on or off-campus • Loans – money you borrow that is paid back with interest
and determine which financial resources you are available to receive to reduce the cost of your education,” said Andrew Spohn, director of financial aid.
Great minds welcome at new psychology honor society! Do you love to learn about people? Connect with others with Jackson College’s new Psi Beta, the Community College National Honor Society in Psychology. Students who plan to major or minor in psychology, as well as students who simply have an interest in psychology, are invited to learn more. Professor Michael Walraven said that the American Psychological Association has been promoting Psi Beta and offered Jackson College the opportunity to launch its own chapter. Professor Walraven will serve as lead faculty advisor, while Associate Professor Anthony Cleveland and Professor Jackie Burkhard will also serve as faculty advisors.
APPLY EARLY To apply, complete the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa. ed.gov. With limited financial aid available, the sooner one completes the form, the better. The 2019-20 FAFSA is now available. After a student has completed their FAFSA, they will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) which details the information submitted and the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the dollar amount that is subtracted from the school cost to determine one’s need for financial aid. Jackson College will mail one letter to the student, and further communication will be through e-mail. SCHOLARSHIPS The Jackson College Foundation offers thousands of dollars in scholarship assistance each year. Please visit the financial aid website at www.jccmi.edu/ financial-aid/scholarships/
Members will have the opportunity to gather with like-minded students while benefitting from additional contact with faculty and psychological materials. They may learn leadership skills, gain research experience or enter award competitions. For those psychology majors planning on transfer, transfer scholarships and linkages with honor societies at universities are available. Members will gain a lifetime career reference and have the opportunity to wear honor regalia at graduation. Psi Beta will have regular meetings and information sessions for students at all campuses. Membership is open to students with a minimum grade point average of 3.25 and have completed 12 credits total, including a psychology class with a B or higher. For more information, please contact Michael Walraven at MGWalraven@jccmi.edu.
Army offers advancement thanks to student’s college credits Attending the JC/LISD Academy not only gives Taylor Rothman a step ahead toward college, but it has helped her move up the ranks in the U.S. Army Reserves! Rothman recently enlisted in the Army Reserves for a six-year contract, fulfillment of a dream. When she first came to the academy four years ago, she was looking for a different kind of learning opportunity, one that allowed her to work more at her own pace and push herself. Finding her own direction and taking a big step toward her goal, her experience exceeds her expectations. She has continued to play softball at her local school district, Clinton. “I’ve loved it, it’s worked out great. I’ve met a lot of new people,” Rothman said. “When I joined the academy I was the only person from Clinton, but here we have a community of many students.” Rothman will graduate this May with both her diploma and her Associate of Science degree. With the college credits she has earned, she was promoted a rank already in the Army Reserves. In the future, she plans to study pre-medicine at the University of Toledo, go to medical school, and then be a surgeon in the Army. With service to her country and plans for a career in medicine, Rothman’s excitement for the future is brimming over! Moreover, it all started with the JC/ LISD Academy. “At the academy, you do need to be selfmotivated. However, don’t be intimidated by it because you have a lot of support around you. If you are willing to put in the work, nothing will stop you from succeeding here.”

“The JC/LISD Academy provides a unique environment for students to pursue their education,” said Michael Masters, dean, Lenawee/Hillsdale County Centers. “When learners are afforded the opportunity to be actively engaged in their education, while held to high-standards of expectation and behavior, the achievements and outcomes are astounding.” Students may earn college credits while still in high school by enrolling in advanced, collegelevel coursework. It also provides an alternative option for capable students who are either struggling or do not feel connected to their local high school. JC/LISD Academy allows students to: • Graduate from high school with a diploma and up to 60 college credits. • Attend classes on a college campus with support. • Learn in a college environment that fosters maturity and academic growth.

When Aidan Weisenfeld finished his necessary high school credits, he looked for a way to get ahead. Dual enrollment at Jackson College gave him a head start. Weisenfeld enrolled as a high school senior during the spring semester, and is now a full-time freshman at Jackson College @ LISD TECH. Dual enrollment opportunities allow students to enroll in college courses while still in high school, in courses that are not part of their high school curriculum. They may enrich their academic experience while taking college classes for free or at a greatly reduced cost.
“I was excited and a little nervous, because this was college and high school builds it up to be kind of scary. But it wasn’t really scary once I got in and got started,” Weisenfeld said. He earned seven college credits while still in high school. While juggling college classes with a full-time job in the factory, Weisenfeld is maintaining a 4.0 grade point average in all of his classes. He is working toward his associate degree to become an electrician. His first semester is going well. “I would say, if you can dual enroll, go right ahead. It’s a pretty useful resource.”

Siena Heights, Jackson College to partner on STEM program The teaching of STEM subjects in high school – science, technology, engineer and math – will be the focus of study and program development between Adrian’s Siena Heights University and Jackson College.
“We are pleased with this opportunity to partner with Siena Heights University on this effort, and to offer more opportunities to our students,” said Michael Masters, dean, Lenawee/Hillsdale County Centers.
Earlier this year, Siena Heights received a $123,901 grant for STEM from the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program of the National Science Foundation. With the grant, SHU will identify and address factors that contribute to Michigan’s STEM educator shortage. One of the project’s objectives is for SHU, in partnership with Jackson College, to create a “2+3” program for secondary STEM majors, beginning at Jackson College and finishing at SHU to earn their bachelor’s degree in STEM education. An articulation agreement will be created to allow Jackson College students to apply credits at SHU. This will offer another opportunity for Jackson College students to begin their path to a bachelor’s degree and enjoy a “seamless” transfer to university when they are ready. Speak with a student success navigator for more information on transfer opportunities.
JC/LISD Academy inspires student to teach Isabel Valdez sought more opportunity than her high school could provide. She has found it at the JC/LISD Academy. Enrolling at the academy in her sophomore year of high school, Valdez is now in her fourth year. How does she sum up her experience? “Amazing!”
“I felt like I was important as a student and that my learning was important,” she said. The JC/LISD Academy allows students the opportunity to challenge themselves with college coursework when they are academically and socially ready. This has made a big difference for Valdez. “It gave me more opportunities, more options to pick my subjects when I took college classes. It made me become more mature.” When Valdez finishes after this school year, she will have two associate degrees, along with her high school diploma. She has improved academically, maintaining a 4.0-grade point average in classes at Jackson and at Siena Heights University. She also formed a committee that brings all students together to support each other and grow in their studies. Bringing together her love of learning and a desire to help others, Valdez plans to continue her studies and become a schoolteacher. She plans to major in English and minor in history. “My experience has made me want to become a teacher and to inspire others about learning. The academy is mind-blowing because it inspires people. You don’t notice that you’re changing until one day you wake up and say, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I did that!’”

Jackson College helps fulfill dream A childhood experience with the dentist led Kylee Jones toward her career goal. Jones is a freshman at Jackson College @ LISD TECH and plans to apply to the new dental hygiene program. When she was a young child, she remembers having to have her baby teeth extracted. As she got older and began to think about what she wanted to do, she recalled her own experience and wanted to make sure other children felt security when they are in the dentist’s office. While in high school, she enrolled at the LISD TECH Center and studied dental assisting. As a co-op student, she worked with a dental office during her senior year where she was lucky enough to assist three dentists. She gained valuable experience in the field and for working with different practitioners. “I learned a lot; each dentist liked something different,” Jones said. “Observing the dental hygienist, also, I thought it was awesome the way they could clean teeth. I thought that could scare kids, too. I feel like I would know how to adapt to them.” Jackson College recently started its dental hygiene program on Central Campus, following request for more hygienists from area dental offices. It is a second-admit, meaning students take prerequisites and then apply for admission to the program. Jones plans to apply in the spring. Her experience so far at the Adrian campus has been phenomenal. “I couldn’t be happier with the choice I made. I’m really glad I decided to stay here,” Jones said. In addition to her college classes, Jones referees a women’s volleyball league at the Piotter Center in Adrian and works at the Tip Top Restaurant.
