From The President And Chief Executive Officer, Carlos A. Migoya More than 35 years ago, my younger son was born at Jackson Memorial Hospital, weighing just over a pound – given only a whisper of a chance to survive. At any other facility, he would have been lost, but thanks to the doctors, nurses, and other caregivers at our public hospital, he has grown into a happy, healthy, and successful young man.

Stories like these take place at our hospitals every day, and they are the inspiration for our slogan: Miracles made daily . From Ryder Trauma Center, which trains every one of the U.S. Army’s forward surgical teams and treats our most seriously injured neighbors, to Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital, where patients work toward a second chance at independent lives, Jackson Health System makes miracles. Our entire team is deeply committed to carrying that work forward. The industry we represent and the community we serve will change substantially in the years ahead. Jackson must be strong enough, nimble enough, and smart enough to change with them, while still pushing ourselves to deliver the world’s best medical care. Last year, we launched a new chapter in Jackson’s history with the opening of our first urgent care center, UHealth Jackson Urgent Care — Country Walk. It is the first in a new network of walk-in centers that combine the convenience of on-demand care with the quality you expect from Jackson and the University of Miami Health System. Our urgent care services are now available in Keystone Point and Cutler Bay and will soon expand to Miami Gardens and Doral in early 2018.

We have also been upgrading our facilities in our hospitals, including a new trauma center at Jackson South Medical Center; new procedure suites at Jackson North Medical Center; and a new surgical cancer unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital. With the support of our community, our elected officials, and our generous donors, we broke ground on the new José Milton Memorial Hospital at our future Jackson West Medical Center campus in Doral, and prepared to begin construction of the new Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at UHealth/Jackson Memorial. In the years to come, Jackson is preparing for its biggest changes yet. We’re expanding our services in the areas where you count on us for the best: cardiology, organ transplantation, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, maternity, and pediatrics, especially for those high-risk children who need our unmatched care in neonatology, pediatric cardiology, and other highly specialized children’s services.

A Global Leader In Cutting-Edge Care For Children

In early 2016, Liam came to Holtz Children’s from Texas via air ambulance. In February, Liam successfully underwent a nine hour transplant surgery, receiving eight new organs: a liver, stomach, large and small bowels, pancreas, two kidneys, and bladder. “Seeing our son eating and having formula like a regular baby was one of the happiest days of our lives,” Julissa said. “Liam is doing amazingly well.” Delilah and Liam Emmanuel with their parents, Julissa Cerda and Jose Garza.
Gastric Sleeve Surgery Gives Sisters A Chance To Regain Their Lives Gloria Taylor, a U.S. Army veteran was always healthy and athletic. She had been assigned multiple times to some of the most dangerous war zones, but she had not faced her biggest battle yet. She would find herself in a life-or-death struggle with her failing health. 2017 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
Gloria, who had been a petite size 4, ballooned to a size 16. She gained 75 pounds, her diabetes was out of control, and exercise was not helping her lose weight. Elias Chousleb, MD, a bariatric surgeon at Jackson North Medical Center, explained different weight-loss surgeries that might help. Her best option was gastric sleeve surgery.

Right after the surgery, her life changed dramatically. She no longer needed oral medication or insulin shots, and her blood sugar normalized. Just three months later, Gloria had already dropped 60 pounds and resumed exercising. The remarkable results motivated her sister, Linda Taylor, who suffered from weight gain after a spinal cord injury in 2007. Linda also had gastric sleeve surgery at Jackson North with Dr. Chousleb.

In just one month, she had already lost 30 pounds. “This is incredible for me because I haven’t weighed less than 200 pounds since I had my last child,” Linda said. “I can do a little exercise now, even with a spinal cord injury, get my life back, and reach the sky.”

Surgery At Birth Saves Her Life Nicole Hannah-Edgecomb was 24 weeks pregnant with her second child when she went to see her obstetrician for a checkup. An ultrasound revealed that her baby had fluid around her heart. Four

Baby-Friendly: Making It Official We’ve always been baby-friendly at Jackson – it’s why so many women choose us for comprehensive maternity care. But when it comes to choosing a hospital for your delivery, the words “Baby-Friendly” have a special meaning. The designation refers to the highly coveted breastfeeding support standard of care, promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). For years, Jackson has been one of a few hospitals to embrace Baby-Friendly standards in South Florida. Now we’re taking it a step further, pursuing an official Baby-Friendly hospital designation across our system. Meeting these standards demonstrates an optimal level of care for infant feeding and bonding between a mother and baby, including education on the benefits of breastfeeding. In addition, all three Jackson maternity programs apply a family-centered approach to maternity care that starts immediately after birth. Babies are placed skin-to-skin on their mother’s chest, allowing for the most intimate contact. During this “magic hour,” babies are most alert and can immediately bond with their mom. In the same operating room, Eliot Rosenkranz, MD, a pediatric cardiac surgeon at Holtz Children’s, and his team performed an ex utero intrapartum treatment and opened the baby’s chest while she was still attached to her mother’s placenta. Immediately after the two-hour surgery, Symphony was moved to the Holtz Children’s pediatric intensive care unit. After one week, she was transferred to the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. Four months later, Symphony went home. “We want everyone to know about Symphony’s case, especially other parents going through the same thing,” the baby’s father, Steven Edgecomb said. “Our child could have died in the womb. If you have a special case, a special need, Jackson is the place to go.”

But suddenly at age 78, any physical task - even taking a few steps became more and more difficult. “I couldn’t breathe properly and I was suffering from fatigue.” Felipe went to Jackson South Medical Center for a solution to his heart condition. Director of cardiovascular medicine for the Jackson Medical Group, Juan Zambrano, MD, diagnosed him with bradycardia due to atrial fibrillation with slow ventricular response. His heart rate was

extremely low – 20 to 30 beats per minute (bpm) – compared to a normal resting heart rate of 60 to 100 bpm in adults. Felipe was next seen by associate medical director for the Jackson Medical Group’s cardiology practice, and a specialist in cardiac electrophysiology, Ivan Mendoza, MD. Dr. Mendoza put a tiny pacemaker the size of a vitamin capsule inside Felipe, making him the first patient in Miami-Dade County to be implanted with this device after its FDA approval. Almost immediately, the pacemaker restored Felipe’s normal heart rhythm. He is now able to do what he loves, including work in his garden, travel, and enjoy his family. Felipe Finale is back to gardening and other activities he loves thanks to his new pacemaker and Jackson cardiologists.

Eric Keller was a proud member of Jackson Health System’s Information Technology (IT) Department for a decade, helping staff and often hearing success stories about patients who beat the odds. He never expected that he would become one of them.
Eric was rushed into a high-tech angio suite, where an angiogram confirmed a potentially deadly, ruptured brain aneurysm. He also suffered a severe brain hemorrhage when an artery in his brain burst and bled into the surrounding tissues. “He was in really bad shape when he came in,” said Eric Peterson, MD, a University of Miami Health System neurosurgeon at Jackson Memorial.

Dr. Peterson performed an emergency procedure and guided a catheter – the size of a strand of hair – through an artery in Eric’s leg into his brain. He placed tiny platinum coils to close the hole and stop the bleeding. Eric spent nearly a month in an induced coma in the neurosurgical intensive care unit. His recovery continued with intense and specialized physical and occupational therapy. “Every doctor, nurse, technician, and therapist who cared for me was incredible,” he said. Eric left Jackson Memorial walking, talking, and with no loss of brain function. Dr. Peterson said, “To see him smile, talk to you, and look you in the eye, it’s a powerful thing.”
