Introduction

This collection of photos were taken over the space of a month in Kent and south London on a mixture of analog and digital cameras , I was trying to capture people that don’t live within the boundaries or modern society or in a society at all. I photographed many locations , environments , people and other subjects, but the reason behind making them into book is that I didn’t want these amazing photos and insight into this lifestyle to be hidden away in and amongst my reference material , to not be seen by anyone but the people who will be marking my Project and to just over see it as research and reference photos and that’s it. I want people to appreciate the photos as I did at the time that I was capturing them and to embrace a perspective into the lifestyle and people that feature in this and to get an inside look on what its really like to live out of society.

In making these images it was often touchy as some people did not want to be photographed and some wanted to be more so than others , I got caught out by this many times and was told of a few times but it was worth it as I have captured a lot of photos I really enjoy and that have helped me to create artwork as I used them as a key reference when coming up with my final prints. Please take time and enjoy these photos.

Ilford 35mm hp5 plus black and white

This chapter contains black and white photos I had take on a 35 mm camera I bought from Oxfam the film was an Ilford black and white hp5 400. My reason behind that choice was that film photos especially these brand of black and white films have such a nice quality and deepness and capture the mood of the moment more so than colour ,which can often be too much of a camouflage and can over power the rawness that black and white can capture. My other view was that with digital you can just snap away and by chance and technology you will get a good quality photo but you don’t capture things as well as you would with a analog/film/manual camera because with film you only have a certain amount of photos so you make the most of each image rather than just snap away. These photos were taken in Canterbury when I met up with Angus and his friends for the day , I think these photos came out great and they captured what I wanted as well as give each individual image a great atmosphere, I believe these to be some of my favourite images taken and they gave me great reference points when creating illustrations after I had them developed.

Fuji film 35mm colour/ Canon 500d

These photos were take on a cannon 35 mm that I bought from Oxfam as well as my cannon 500d , I prefer the 35 mm film photos as the colours are slightly off as I used a film that was due to expire in 2014 , I knew this would effect the colour and the speed of which the photo would be taken from what I had been told by photographer friends of mine. The 35 mm film photos really captured the moment and I especially like a few photos from this collection ,im not sure why but I get a 90s sort of nostalgia from these photos and I think that is something I’ve begin to like more each time I look at them , all these photos were taken over a couple days walking around locations in Canterbury in search of environments and subjects. The digital photos were also taken at the same time , just so I could snap away , however the autofocus was broken on my camera so each photo was focused manually which therefore meant it was a similar process as the analog photos of individually taken them. This was a good thing if anything as it did help me take each photo individually and therefore take more time to notice things. The digital photos were all taken over a week or so in various locations in Kent and in south London.

Angus 24 hours

This chapter of photos was taken on a boots home brand disposable camera that I had given to Angus for a short period of time ( it was meant to be 24 hours but he was un-traceable for about 2 days after I had given it to him). I simply asked him to take photos of what ever he wanted , whatever his eyes see and that I just simply wanted an insight into what he sees and does each day. When I got it back he still had a few photos left to take and said that he had got to drunk and forgot about the camera some of the time . I got the photos developed and had a quick look through them and found some nice images he had captured along with a good insight into what life is like on a daily basis through his perspective . It wasn’t till I got home and sat down and had a proper look through , I realised each photo contained a story and I was so grateful to have had the opportunity of giving him the camera and receiving the photos of which I couldn’t imagine the outcome of what they would look like , I never thought they would be of such a high quality that they are. A big thank you to Angus was in order so I repaid him the favour by giving him a few beers.
