ABOUT KELANTAN Located north east of Peninsular Malaysia, the state of Kelantan occupies an area of 14,920 square kilometers.

Kota Bharu is the state capital and its main towns include Pasir Puteh, Tumpat, Bachok, Tanah Merah and Gua Musang. Kelantan is regarded as the “Cradle of Malay Culture” for its success in keeping alive age-old Malay customs and traditions. Its population mainly made up of Malays, followed by Chinese, Indians and other races.

Majorities of the people of Kelantan are fishermen and farmers. Agriculture is Kelantan’s main economic activity - with rice, rubber and tobacco being the state’s foremost agricultural produce. Besides that, fishing and forestry are also major contributors to its economy.

Historical records show that Kelantan was influenced by the Funan Kingdom on the Mekong River. Chinese records indicated the country had trade and economic ties with Kelantan. It was referred to as Ho-Lo-Tan. In the 15th century, the Melaka sultanate held sway over Kelantan and eventually the Johor sultanate and the Terengganu sultanate took over. In the 18th century, the provinces came under a powerful warrior, Long Yunus, whose descendants make up the present royal family.

After WWII, Kelantan came under the protection of British. In 1957, when Malaysia gained independence from Britain, Kelantan became part of the Federated States of Malaya.

Kelantan is the richest state in Malaysia where culture and tradition are concerned. Its kite flying competitions (wau), top-spinning (gasing) contests and puppet shadow plays (wayang kulit) have attracted many tourists to the state.

Siti Khadijah Market 西蒂卡迪加市集

The Siti Khadijah Market in Kota Bharu is one of the landmark attractions of Kelantan. In the mornings this market is where locals flock for profusion of items for their daily usage.

Padang Merdeka 独立广场 Before 1957, it was known as Padang Bank. Since Independence, it has been named Padang Merdeka (Independence Square). Here in this historical landmark, one can visit a World War II Memorial that was constructed to commemorate those who had perished in their fight for the country. One such hero was Tok Janggut, a renowned Malay warrior who was hung here for his defiance against the British. In addition, Padang Merdeka is the place where parades and processions are held.

World War II Memorial Museum 第二次世界大战纪念博物馆 Constructed in 1912, this Museum was once the headquarters of the Japanese Kempetai, the feared secret police.

Now, the WWII Memorial Museum is a repository for documents, pictures and military paraphernalia of the Japanese Occupation. Cultural relics of the Japanese Armed Forces used during World War II are also exhibited here. 建于 1912 年的战争博物馆，曾是第 二次世界大战期间,日本便衣警察的 总部。如今，里头展示了日军在第二 次世界大战时的文物。此外，这里也 展示了日本军人在第二次大战期间所 使用的文化遗产。

Royal Museum 皇室博物馆 Constructed in 1939, the Royal Museum was formerly the Palace of the Sultan. Today, it exhibits the Kelantan royal family’s history and lineage. The collections provide visitors with an insight to the life of the Kelantan royal family. It includes photographs of the royal family’s social activities, costumes and priceless artefacts such as beautiful crystals and silverware.

Islamic Museum 伊斯兰博物馆 The history of Islam in Kelantan is housed in a large twostorey traditional wooden building, which used to be the state`s first school for Islamic studies also known as Balai Syura. The Museum exhibits the replica of a traditional maisonette,photographs of scholars and pictures of the world great mosques. A photograph collection of Prophet Muhammad`s personal belongings and a collection of Islamic arts & crafts from China,Iran,Mecca,the Philippines and Turkey.

Museum of Traditions and Customs 皇室传统及风俗习惯博物馆 Formerly a royal palace, the Museum of Royal Traditions and Customs was constructed in 1887.

Besides exhibiting various handicrafts and distinctively designed textiles, tourists can also see cultural relics that were used during the royal family’s celebrations and festivals. Malay weapons, such as the keris (dagger), are also put on display here. Istana Balai Besar 大义场皇宫 Kota Bharu (literally translated New Town or City) was named when a new palace, the Istana Balai Besar was built to replace the old Istana Kota Lama in 1840. The construction was carried out under the command of the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Mohamed II. Located along the Kelantan River (Sungai Kelantan), the Istana Balai Besar then became Kelantan’s administrative centre. Soon after, Kota Bahru became the state capital of Kelantan.

Thanks to the people of Ulu Kelantan and Pasir Puteh, the splendid wooden palace stands majestically over an area of 1600 square meters, surrounded by a fort. The building, consisting of a royal chamber and an audience hall, among others, houses an impressive collection of emblems and symbols of royalty. Once the residence of the Sultans, the palace is today a place to hold formal events and conduct investiture ceremonies.

大义场皇宫是吉兰丹州苏丹莫哈末二世下令兴建的,目 的是为了取代原有的皇宫——位于吉兰丹河畔的旧城 皇宫，以作为吉兰丹州统治者的新行政中心。自从皇 宫兴建于此之后，环绕着皇宫的这个地区便被命名为 哥打巴鲁(新都城的意思)，后来成为吉兰丹州的首府。 这个宫殿傲立在占地1627平方尺的城堡内，其美丽的 木制结构是以乌鲁吉兰丹及白沙湾的人民进贡的木材 制成的。宫殿内有着令人印象深刻的大殿、王座厅、 皇室器具收藏厅。大义场皇宫在过去被作为苏丹的住 所，如今却主要被用来进行州内官方活动和授衔仪式 的场所，一般不开放给游客参观。

State Mosque 吉兰丹州回教堂 Another iconic landmark in the city is the Al-Muhammadi Mosque.

The mosque was named in honour of the late Sultan Muhammad IV for the contributions he made to the state. It is not difficult to spot the mosque as it is adorned with golden domes and magnificent arches. Built of wood in the 18th century (for the purposes of worship, missionary activities and Islamic teachings), the building was later re-constructed using stones in 1925. Today, state-level religious functions and events are held here.

Magnificent handiwork in the form of silverware, songket (cloth embroidered with gold thread), batik and woodcrafts are available for sale in this museum. Pantai Cahaya Bulan 月光海滩 Pantai Cahaya Bulan means the “Moonlight Beach”. It is known as PCB among locals.

Located about 10km from Kota Bharu, it is a popular spot for local family outings especially during weekends. Its warm golden sands and crystal blue waters amidst tall and graceful palms encourages one to just lay on the sand and bask in the sun.

It is a good place to visit on a sunny day.

Kuala Koh National Park 瓜拉哥国家公园

There is a myriad of activities that can be carried out in the National Park or Taman Negara, a pride of the nation.

Among them are jungle-trekking and bird watching.

Mountain climbing is another popular activity here – the mountains of Tahan, Perlis, Penumpu and Gagau are favourite peaks to climb. They are also the sources of many cool, pristine rivers that add to the variety of activities that can be carried out here; namely, fishing and rafting. On the river banks of many parts of the tropical forests are trees of the species tualang and neram. Interestingly the neram fruit is food for the kelah fish. The Kelah species of fish has become very popular among fishing enthusiasts and has even earned the title “Malaysia’s premier river sportfish”!

One of the access points to this natural wonderland is Kuala Koh in Kelantan.

Gunung Stong 史东山

For a chance to catch a glimpse of wild and exotic animals such as the Asian elephant, seladang, Malayan tiger (almost extinct), tapir and the Argus pheasant, nature enthusiasts would pay a visit to the Taman Negeri Gunung Stong in Kelantan.

This park is listed as one the top five ecological destinations in Malaysia. Rich with flora and fauna this limestone mountain of 1433 meters high is millions of years old. Functioning as a water catchment for the Kelantan River (Sungai Kelantan), this area plays an important role during times of drought and flood.

Local Train Ride 火车之旅 A short train ride within the state is the tourism attraction you can’t miss it. The train also known as “Jungle Train”, it was originally used to connect to remote villages and towns, the passengers are mostly locals or students. WAT PHOTIVIHAN 卧佛寺

Rich in Islamic history and culture, it is fascinating to note and see elements of Thai culture in the state of Kelantan. At the northern part of Kelantan, visitors will find Buddhist temples that stand majestically tall on the soils of a state mainly populated by Muslims. The temple in Cabang Empat, known as Wat Photivihan, is believed to be the second longest in the world and the longest in Southeast Asia. Gua Ikan is located nearby the Gunung Stong. Its name is derived from a solitary rock that looks like a fish. Adventure lovers must take a chance to explore the cave and its surroundings, you may stumble across treasures that were said to have been stashed away during the Japanese Occupation. Pantai Irama, Bachok 美妙音乐海滩

Pantai Irama is located just 1km north of Bachok, roughly 20km southeast of Kota Bharu.

Reputed to be the most beautiful beach in the state of Kelantan, Pantai Irama (Beach of Melody) slopes leisurely into the clear waters of the South China Sea. Located about 1km north of Bachok, this beach is a favourite haunt for many a picnicker. Rantau Panjang (45km from Kota Bharu) and Pengkalan Kubor (21km from Kota Bharu) are the most popular duty-free shopping zones in Kelantan.

Rantau Panjang is a haven for shoppers. One can often see visitors with armloads or trolley-loads of purchased items after a trip to this popular spot in Kelantan. Lined with duty free shops, shopping at Rantau Panjang for items such as house and kitchen appliances, clothes, food, fruits and products from Thailand is easy on the wallet or purse.

Another place to shop is Pengkalan Kubur. Like Rantau Panjang, it is also renowned for the variety of Thai products, kitchen glassware and utensils, clothes and electrical appliances that are available for sale there. Wakaf Che Yeh is an openair night market, located along Jalan Kuala Krai which is 4km from Kota Bharu town.

There are numerous stalls selling local food, clothes and tropical fruits, vegetable, seafood and others. Wakaf Che Yeh is wholesale markets in the morning, wet market during the day and turns into night market as the sunset. 位于瓜拉吉涞路的 Wakaf Che Yeh 是一个露天式的夜 市集。各种各样的食物、衣 服，本地水果都能购买得 到。 Wakaf Che Yeh 早上是批发 市场及菜市，晚上则是夜市 集，几乎24小时营业，成为 哥打巴鲁的不夜城。

Located at Jalan Sultan Mahmud, the Cultural Centre showcases the state’s cultural heritage such aswayang kulit (shadow puppetry), wau (giant kite flying), silat (Malay martial arts), gasing (top spinning) and cultural dances.

The Shadow Play 皮影戏 Wayang kulit or shadow play is an old cultural entertainment using shadows cast by intricately carved puppets in relaying mythical parables of good versus evil. The shadow play has been popular in many oriental and Middle Eastern countries for more than a thousand years. In Malaysia, it is prominent in the state of Kelantan. 皮影戏是一种古老传统的文化娱乐，只使 用阴影塑像，透过被雕刻得精致的木偶传 递神话寓言，通常内容都是良善对付罪 恶。皮影戏在许多东方国家和中东的国家 里已拥有超过一千年的历史。在马来西 亚，普遍可在吉兰丹看到。

Batik Batik printing has its roots in the East Coast 巴迪 where batik makers practise the age-old

traditions of batik painting by hand. Batik is created by four methods, namely blockprinting, drawn free style, silk-screened, or tiedyed. Batik fabrics are usually cotton and silk.

Batik can be found as cloths, cushion covers, tablecloths, place mats or simply as works of art. Batik sarongs are usually a novelty with tourists. 巴迪(蜡染布)的手工艺源于马来西亚东海 岸的州属。制造巴迪布有分为四种不同的 制作方法:即方块打印、自由地画出格式、 绢印、或栓洗染。巴迪布的布料通常是以 棉质和丝绸为主。巴迪布可用作为布料、 坐垫盖子、桌布、地毯或简单地作为艺术 作品，而巴迪沙笼则时常令游客感到感稀 奇。

Top Spinning 陀螺 Gasing or top spinning is a favourite traditional games in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia especially Kelantan and Terengganu. To play gasing, you need strength, coordination, and skill. The gasing, if expertly hurled, can spin for as long as 2 hours. 陀螺是马来半岛东海岸特别是吉兰丹与登 嘉楼，广受喜爱的休闲游戏。玩陀螺的人 需要力量、协调与技巧，若高手玩陀螺的 话可旋转长达 2 个小时之久呢。

Woodcarvings 木雕 Delicate curlicues, paisley designed, floral motifs and strong bright colours can be found on the prows of the local boats, the doors, walls and windows of traditional Malay houses.

Woodcarvings require a high degree of skill, patience and determination. Wau 风筝 Majestic bird of the air, the kite or wau is an icon famous throughout the country of Kelantan and Terengganu.

Food 佳肴美食 Malaysia is a food paradise. The variety of delicious cuisines offered by the northern state of Kelantan attests to that fact.

There is a great variety of delicious food in Kelantan. The mere mention of nasi kerabu (rice served with fragrant herbs), ayam percik (skewered barbecued chicken meat), tom yam and barbecued fish causes some food enthusiasts’ mouth to water.

Besides Malay food, one can easily find Chinese and Indian food in Kelantan, which is charmingly typical for a Malaysian state. For desserts, there is an assortment of cakes to choose from. It is not an exaggeration to say that one will be spoilt for choice as there are so many selections to placate the taste buds.

The barbecued marinated chicken with spicy coconut gravy, Ayam Percik, is a favourite among locals and visitors alike. A favourite is Nasi Kerabu, a dish with rice as the main component and that is served with coconut milk. Among the ingredients of this dish are fish meat, desiccated coconut and herbs. Another famous rice-based dish is Nasi Dagang. Served with fish in spicy gravy, the rice is fragrant as it is cooked with coconut milk.

It is easy to find a place to eat in Kota Bharu – be it a restaurant, an eatery or a hawker centre. For example, if one wants to have a Chinese meal, the place to head to is the “Chinatown of Kota Bahru” located at the junction of Jalan Padang Garong and Jalan Pengkalan Chepa. Those who are more adventurous in food might want to experience an outdoor Malaysian dining at Padang Bas in the town centre. The food sellers here hawk from 6.00 pm to midnight.
