Kuala Lumpur traces its origins to the 1850s when tin prospectors established a trading post here. An abundance of tin was found at the estuary of the Klang and Gombak Rivers, known today as Ampang. From the marshlands of Ampang, Kuala Lumpur grew to become one of the world’s best-known cities in the world. It was made the capital following Malaysia’s independence in 1957. Its flourishing growth led to the conferment of city status in 1972.
On 1 February 1974, Kuala Lumpur was ceded to the Federal Government by the state of Selangor and established as a Federal Territory. It is the political capital as well as the economic and cultural centre of Malaysia. The phenomenal success of this city can largely be attributed to the cooperation and effort of its residents. The three major races, namely the Malays, Chinese and Indians, have worked hard to build Kuala Lumpur to be what it is today. Kuala Lumpur is indeed a modern, fast growing city that is filled with vibrant Eastern colours. In the evening, Kuala Lumpur turns into a garden city of lights offering a dazzling nightlife. One can party till dawn in this colourful city that is full of character and life. In brief, the city boasts a kaleidoscope of fascinating sights and sounds for its visitors to enjoy and experience.
Just a minute away from Masjid Jamek is Jalan Masjid India. Jalan Masjid India is also known as “Little India” and it is the original shopping haven that has dated back over a century ago. Its name is derived from a mosque built in 1870 for the Indian Muslim population settling there at earlier time. Little India is at the heart of a thriving neighbourhood built up around the district’s mosque. You can reach there with the Star LRT or Putra LRT and get off at the Masjid Jamek Station. The Masjid Jamek is only 200 meters away from this shopping bazaar. There is a wide variety of stalls and shops selling all kinds of Indian goods and garments, traditional Indian saris, colorful hand-colored rings, jewelry boxes and etc from India. When walking on the street, the wind is coming from bursts of jasmine incense and the scene is like a kind of illusion in India.

Just a stone’s throw away, along Jalan Ampang, Zouk Club (branch of the Singapore original) is definitely a must-visit for hardcore clubbers. Frangipani, located at Changkat Bukit Bintang, is a fine-dining restaurant with a pub. It is a refreshing establishment as the deejay spins the latest chill-out tunes. For those who would like to relax and dine amidst a Cuban-style ambience, Hemingway’s or Little Havana is the place to be.
