icons of Labuan A triangular shaped island and six smaller islands make up Labuan. The island is facing the South China Sea, and situated south west of the state of Sabah and north of Brunei Bay. The name “Labuan” comes from the Malay word “labuhan” (or “pelabuhan”) which means port. Labuan is well known for its International Offshore Financial Centre. From world-class resorts and white sandy beaches to broadband telecommunications, Labuan has become a popular island resort. For the more adventurous visitors, they can rent water taxis to visit the water villages, experience the life of the indigenous Brunei ethnic sail out to the deep blue sea into the ocean and go wrecks diving.

ABOUT LABUAN HISTORY 历史 Labuan Town 纳闽市

TRANSPORTATION 交通 Malaysian Airlines, Air Asia and MASwings provide daily direct flights from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu to Labuan. High-speed air-conditioned ferries provide daily services to Labuan from Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei. Fares of buses and taxis on the island are fixed and standardised. Car rental services are also easily available. Labuan was once part of the kingdom of Brunei. The Brunei Sultanate ceded the island to the British in 1840. The British had plans to make Labuan a naval base and a re-fuelling depot. Resulting from the Japanese Occupation during World War II, Labuan went under the rule of Japan from 1942 to 1945. After the war, the island was returned to the British. In 1963, Labuan, together with the states of Sabah and Sarawak, became independent by joining the Federation of Malaysia. On the 16th of April 1984, Labuan was proclaimed a Federal Territory of Malaysia. ECONOMY 经济 On its early history, mining activities were Labuan’s main economic activities. Today, business opportunities ranging from financial to tourist related industries are created in Labuan. The government encourages collaboration between local and foreign partners in developing the island. UNITED NATION BEACH (UN’08 BEACH) 联合国海滩

The 9km beach stretch from Batu Manikar Beach to Sg. Miri Beach won the Clean Beach Award from United Nation Environment Program at Pattaya, Thailand through the 2nd COBSEA Marine Litter Workshop and Clean Up Campaign 2008. The prestigious award is well-deserved as every morning municipal council workers can be seen hard at work cleaning the beach from any rubbish and debris. 长达9公里的 Batu Manikar 海滩至 Sg. A footpath circles most parts of the beach for the convenience of joggers and casual walkers, shaded naturally by the many trees. The most developed beaches in Labuan, Pancur Hitam Beach is a beautiful landscaped park extends directly onto the long sandy beach. On the south of Pancur Hitam Beach, you will find a recreational area known as “Sudut Cabaran (Challlenging Site)” which offers an ideal site for various recreational activities. In this area too can be found many food stalls with live musical bands performing every weekend. Layang-Layang Atoll or “swallow reefs” lies about 300km north of Labuan. It is a world class diving and fishing paradise which rated as “Big fish and wall diving Mecca of Southeast Asia”. Papan Island has facilities such as chalets, campsites, sports grounds, a surau, a BBQ area, volleyball and sepak takraw courts. Adventurous souls can embark on an exciting bout of jungle trekking at the island too. Here visitors can enjoy long stretches of sandy beaches, reef atoll, mangrove, island jungle and quiet tidal pools. 24km south west of Pulau Rusukan Kecil lies the infamous American Wreck. About 5 minutes boat ride from Pulau Kuraman, you will be able to see hundreds of sea snakes at a little reef atoll. Surrounded by colourful coral reefs and marine life, the Labuan Marine Park is a diving and snorkelling haven for all. This living underwater garden is mesmerizing and it attracts eco-divers and snorkelers. SENSATIONAL DIVING SITES 潜水地点

World War II and post war shipwrecks make Labuan an attractive site for wall and wreck diving. Diving expeditions can be arranged with the hotels, resorts or tour operators. Labuan has four popular wreck sites, namely the American, Australian, Cement and Blue Wreck. The American Wreck lies 21 meter under water and is located 24 km from Labuan, toward the south west of Pulau Rusukan Kecil. It is worthwhile dive to take. The Australian Wreck lies 21 meter under water and is located 23 km from Labuan, toward the south west of Pulau Rusukan Besar. The Cement Wreck is located east of Kuraman Islands, takes divers on a discovery journey up to a depth of 30m. it has been dubbed the world’s most colourful and photogenic wreck. MALAYSIA’S ONLY WATER VILLAGE HOMESTAY 马来西亚唯一水上民宿

This is Kampung Air Patau Patau 2, established in the 1930’s; the whole village was wiped out by a Japanese bomb during WWII. The resilient villagers rebuilt the village from scratch once the war was over. The architecture and concept of the water village dates back to their ancestors in Brunei. MYSTERY CHIMNEY 烟窗塔

Situated on a rise at Tanjung Kubong, this 106 feet high red brick stack, known to locals as The Chimney, is an artifact from Labuan’s coal mining era (18471912). The Chimney was made from more than 23,000 pieces of red bricks that was imported all the way from England. The bricks layering and works are typical of British style. However, recent findings revealed that there were no traces of smoke or burning to suggest its use as a chimney as is popularly believed. 位于Tanjung Kubong的烟窗塔是一座高106英尺的 红砖烟囱,是从纳闽岛的煤矿时代产物。它见证 了纳闽从事采煤事业的岁月。近来考古学家研究 发现,它并没有被当烟囱使用的烟迹。

WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL 第二世界大战纪念碑

Situated at Jalan Tanjung Batu, lie 3,908 soldiers in perfectly squared platoons, much like how they would stand in salutation when they were alive. These soldiers were from all over: Australia, Great Britain, India, New Zealand and even Malaysia. They were all buried here today at the WWII Memorial in Labuan, which was officiated by the Australian government in June 1953. A memorial service is held on the nearest Sunday to 11th of November. This memorial is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. 第二世界大战纪念碑位于Jalan Tanjung Batu ,里头共有 3,908 名 烈士的墓碑。这些烈士都是来自澳 洲、英国、印度、纽西兰和马来西 亚。 每年接近11月11日的星期日,这里 都会举行一连串的悼念仪式。

PEACE PARK 和平公园

The Peace Park was built as a memorial and renunciation of the horrors of war. It is dominated by the memorial mound which is surrounded by landscaped gardens and pavilions. The Japanese decided to build the Peace Park next to the Surrender Point is to show that they are genuinely sorry for the trouble their forefathers have caused. The Peace Park pays tribute to the ones who have sacrificed their lives in Borneo during WWII. It is also a memento of friendship between Malaysia and Japan, and a promise of peace and harmony for all mankind that such warlike cruelty will not happen again in the future. 和平公园是为了纪念停战而建立的。这座纪念丘是 由观景花园和凉亭所围绕着。日本人决定把和平公 园建立在日军投降点旁边的用意是想证明他们是真 心诚意为他们祖先给大家所带来的麻烦深感遗憾和 愧疚。和平公园的建立是向二战时壮烈牺牲的勇士 们致敬的象征之一。同时,这也代表着马来西亚和 日本两国之间的友谊,并承诺此等残酷战争将不会 再度发生。

Labuan Museum is a one-stop centre with information on anything and everything related to Labuan and Malaysia, the history and culture of Labuan. Its history covers pre-historic era of Labuan, Brunei Sultanate, British colonial days, World War II, Independence, declaration of Labuan as a federal territory up to the establishment of Labuan Corporation. While its cultural theme showcases various phases of socio-cultural and economic evolution in Labuan.

Labuan Marine Museum was set up back in 2003 to help preserve the marine life of the island. The Labuan Marina Museum exhibits a variety of fishes, mollusks, crustacean and corals. Its ground level focuses on marine life, wrecks, corals and mangrove with life specimens of marine animals. Level one contains replicas and illustrations of coral, sharks, stingrays, marine reptiles, fishes, marlin and marine mammals, and sections on fishing and diving activities, oceanography and mollusks.

GLORIOUS SUNSET 日落

Glorious sunsets. That is the one thing a visitor would not fail to notice about Labuan. From Batu Manikar Beach, drop by at Pohon Batu Beach where there are wooden stalls for fishermen to sell fresh seafood as soon as they are landed. Further along was the gorgeous Pancur Hitam Beach. Casuarina trees aplenty stand in orderly rows, giving shade and a smidgeon of privacy to a courting couple who were enjoying the sunset together while leaning against their car. A final point of interest was University Malaysia Sabah Kampus Labuan (UMSKAL) before made a slow drive back to Jalan Batu Manikar. Events and Festivals in Labuan Island Labuan may be quiet on normal days, but when there is a festival or celebration going on, you can be assured that the entire island’s population will be dressed in their best, and are out and about attending such occasions. They are a laidback community who would not mind welcoming an uproar in their homeland every once in a while.

FEDERAL TERRITORY DAY CELEBRATION Date : February 1st - 28th Venue : Labuan Square

KIDS SCUBA CAMP 2010 Date : May 28th - 31st Venue : Papan Island / Labuan Marine Park

Together with the sister Territories in the Peninsular - Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, Labuan celebrates the Federal Territory Day every year in February. Labuan was enlisted as a Federal Territory on April 16, 1984.

First time held in Labuan, the Kids Scuba Camp - The Underwater Adventure for Kids Program is aimed to introduce youngsters (from eight to teenagers) and their family members, to discover and educate them about the science of Scuba Diving, a very popular recreational activity for marine enthusiasts allows children and adult to take a closer look at the amazing underwater world.

The opening ceremony takes place in Kuala Lumpur, whilst Labuan hosts the closing ceremony. Various cultural performances and sports carnivals are held at the Labuan Square to celebrate this remarkable event.

CHINESE NEW YEAR Date : February 14th - 15th Venue : Throughout Malaysia This is the most important festive season for all Chinese counterparts around the world, as they celebrate the coming for spring and the New Year, which often falls in the month of January or February. Everyone cloths themselves in brand new outfits for the day, and pay their respect to their elderly. In return, they will receive red packets known as ‘ang pow’ with some extra pocket money in them. There will also be loud and explosive firecrackers let off all around, complementing auspicious lion dances to welcome luck and prosperity in the coming New Year.

(Labuan International Sea Challenge - LISC ’10)

Date : April 27th - May 2nd Venue : Labuan International Sea Sports Complex Enjoy a great splashing time in Labuan this April - May with over 30 water based events. The Labuan International Sea Challenge (LISC’10) is the final Malaysia’s Water Festival Celebration which showcases sea and beach activities offering more than RM250,000.00 in cash prizes. LISC has successfully established an international footprint for many its flagship events such as the IGFA Labuan International Game Fishing Tournament (LIGFT), Labuan Round Island Kayak Challenge and Labuan International Cross Channel Swimming Challenge. LISC’10 ends with the Official Closing Ceremony of Malaysia Water Festival on 2 May 2010 in Labuan.

NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATION Date : August 15th - September 16th Venue : Labuan Square / Throughout labuan A month-long activity to celebrate the country’s independence and to promote national unity among the various races in Malaysia. Highlights of the launching ceremony include an aerobic workout and bicycle convoy. Stage shows, parade and fireworks are some of the excitements held at the Labuan Square starting from National Day’s Eve to 31st August. The closing ceremony on 16th September which also known as Malaysia Day offers a cultural treat with traditional music competition, performing arts, traditional games and stage shows.

RAMADHAN BAZAAR* Date : August 11th - September 9th Venue : Jalan Dewan, Jalan Batu Arang, Jalan Bunga Mawar A month before Hari Raya Adilfitri, Muslims observe the Ramadhan by fasting. The fasting is

meant to teach the Muslims patience, sacrifice and humility, while giving time to reflect on past sins and pray for guidance and deliverance from evil. In Labuan, the community looks forward to the Ramadhan Bazaars along Jalan Dewan, Jalan Batu Arang and Jalan Bunga Mawar. During this time, local folks will set up stalls displaying an array of savoury Brunei-Malay fares, tasty home cooked food and an assortment of traditional Malay cakes and puddings. Tourists may try out local affairs like punjung, lamban, jelurut and wajik all at one place.

HARI RAYA AIDILFITRI (EID UL-FITR)* Date : September 10th Venue : Throughout Malaysia Eid Ul-Fitr or Hari Raya Adilfitri is a celebration to mark the end of the Ramadhan, a holy month of fasting. During this festive season, Muslims will return to their hometown to be with their families and relatives for a rowdy celebration. There will be visits to friends’ and families’ homes, feasting together on sumptuous spreads that include traditional Raya food like ketupat and rendang, and firecrackers will keep the entire village awake to prolong the festive celebration.

DEEPAVALI Date : November 5th Venue : Throughout Malaysia Deepavali is the ‘Festival of Lights’, which usually falls on a day towards the end of the year, calculated according to the sun moon. It is a celebration for the Hindus around the world on the triumph of good over evil, when Lord Krishna defeated the evil demon Narakasuram, by lighting little oil lamps (kutte vileku) in commemoration of Krishna’s victory and Narakasuram’s death. During this time of the year, you will also see many kollam, beautiful patterns made up of colourful rice, decorating the floors.

REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY Date : November 14th Venue : World War II Memorial Also known as ‘Poppy Day’, it is commemorated on Sunday closest to November 11 every year. War veterans from the Commonwealth Countries as well as locals and visitors from all over the world gather in the WWII Memorial to pay tribute to the brave souls of yesteryears. A total of 3,908 soldiers lie in the famous WWII Memorial along Jalan Tanjung Batu in Labuan, which was officiated by the Australian government in June 1953. These soldiers were from all over: Australia, Great Britain, India, New Zealand and Malaysia. They are mainly the Prisoners-of-War (POWs) in Sandakan, perished war heroes of the Australian 7th and 9th Divisions, as well as those of the Punjab Signal Corp and a few locals.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS Date : December 25th Venue : Throughout Malaysia Christmas Day falls on December 25 every year, and it is celebrated mainly by Christians around the world. However, nowadays, it is a festive season everyone can take part in to spread the joy. Around this time, Christmas trees will be put up, decorated with colourful lights and ornaments, and with presents wrapped up nicely under the trees. On the days leading up to Christmas Day, there will be Christmas carols in shopping malls to promote the spirit of Christmas and get patrons into the festive mood.
