Tourism Icons of Sarawak Sarawak is located on the northwest of Borneo Island. Covering a land area of approximately 124,000 sq km, it is the biggest state in Malaysia. Sarawak is also known as the land of the hornbills as the protected bird is the symbol of the state. Two thirds of the state is covered with tropical rainforests, thus Sarawak is rich in flora and fauna. However, it is also filled to the brim with history and culture. Sarawak has an indigenous population of 27 ethnic groups. The main indigenous group is the Dayaks, and they are made up of the Ibans (the Sea Dayaks) and the Bidayuhs (the Land Dayaks). Other ethnic groups include the Kenyah, Penan, Melanau and Kedayan. Each has its own unique culture and heritage. The history of Sarawak dates back to 45,000 B.C. Human fossils from that period were discovered near Niah Caves. Sarawak was formerly a dependency of the Brunei Sultanate. In 1841, the Sultan of Brunei relinquished control of Kuching to the British under the command of Sir James Brooke. James Brooke later bestowed himself the title “Rajah of Sarawak”. For the next three generations, the white Rajahs reigned the state. During the Second World War, Sarawak was occupied by the Japanese. When the Japanese surrendered in 1946, the British regained control over the state and Sarawak became part of the British colony. In 1963, Sarawak, together with Sabah, Singapore and Malaya formed the Federation of Malaysia. The coast of Sarawak is rich with petroleum, the main natural resource of the state. Other resources of the state include timber, black and white pepper, bird’s nest, coconut, rubber and palm oil. Today, the manufacturing and trading industry in Sarawak is developing rapidly. The Sarawak State Government has also continuously encourages and promotes tourism as a major state economic activity. ABOUT SARAWAK Kuching 古晋 The capital of Sarawak, Kuching (the Malay name for cat), is a city by the river. It lies approximately 32km away from the coast. Its rich historical heritage can be explored in the three museums located in the city namely the Sarawak Museum, the Tun Razak Museum and the Sarawak Islamic Museum. Due to its rapid economic development and increase in population, Kuching was upgraded to a city on 1 August 1988. To commemorate this historic event, a gigantic statue of a white cat was erected on the borders between the northern and southern parts of the city (Kuching North and Kuching South).
Santubong 山都望 The Santubong Peninsula is located at the west mouth of the Sarawak River. Located 32km away from Kuching and merely 35 minutes drive from Kuching, Santubong has a great deal to offer to visitors. It is fishing village with beautiful beaches such as Damai Beach, Teluk Bandung, Pulau Satang, Pantai Siar, Pantai Semantan, Pantai Penyok and Pantai Bandung. At its northern tip, Mount Santubong (810m) rises majestically from the sea. The area has been settled since ancient times and was once a major trading centre. Today, the Peninsula, especially Damai, is a popular beach resort area and a good base for discovering the charms of Southwest Sarawak. Its attractions include quaint fishing villages, primary rainforest, superb seafood restaurants, a “living museum” and luxury beach resorts. Santubong also offers spectacular sunsets, as the sun sinks slowly into the sea framed by Sarawak’s rolling hills on one side and scattered islands on the other.

The Pandaw River Cruise Experience Pandaw Luxury Pandaw cruising is different from other forms of cruising. The atmosphere on board is informal and relaxed. A Pandaw river cruise is a deeply tranquil vacation experience. Unlike other cruises there are no (nonessential) Tannoy announcements and other irritations normally associated with a cruise ship. Pandaw passengers like to be smart casual at night, but do not dress up. There is no captain’s table at dinner or any of the other rituals associated with sea cruising. There is a very high level of care and impeccable service on board a Pandaw with a ratio of one staff member for every two guests. Pandaw does not offer special treatment to the many celebrities, like Hollywood film directors, famous entrepreneurs, royal princes, noblemen, etc., who frequently travel on these ships. Everyone who buys a Pandaw ticket is a VIP and receives the same level of service and care on the river. Pandaw river cruises are essentially an outdoor experience. Whilst the staterooms are very comfortable and roomy, passengers prefer to spend their time sitting outside, on the promenade decks or on the vast observation deck above. Unlike other cruise ships, every window (except port holes on lower deck) can be opened. Exploratory shore excursion are led by local guides. When sailing passengers can siton deck and become absorbed by great panoramas as they unfold about them. Spellbound, one cannot help but to meditate upon the unceasing human and wildlife activity of these teaming waterworlds.

HEADHUNTER’S TRAIL
The Headhunter’s Trail follows the route of Kayan headhunting parties who dragged their war boats through the rainforest to raid the inhabitants of the Limbang river system. A boat journey to Camp 5 is followed by an 11.3 km trek through a very remote rainforest area, with a good possibility if wildlife encounters. Trekkers then take another boat for an overnight stay at an iban longhouse, followed by a further 1½ hour boat ride to Medamit to catch the van for Limbang. The trek can also be done in reverse, starting at Limbang. Either way, it offers a fascinating route into or out of Mulu National Park. The trail takes its name from its historical role as the route taken by warring parties between the Tutoh and Medalam rivers. The trail runs between Limbang, a picturesque
town on the Limbang River, entering Mulu on its Northern boundary and trekking down through Camp 5 and then onto Mulu Park Head Quarters. (or visa versa) Trekkers without a guide travelling along this trail from the north must first • Contact the Mulu Park Office to ensure there is space at Camp 5 for you to stay overnight and so we can check that you arrive safely. • Register at the Mentawai Ranger Station before beginning the walk so that we know you are in the Park You must begin walking from Kuala Terikan no later than 1.00 pm in order to arrive at Camp 5 before dark. The area is very isolated with the nearest town many hours away, the trail is well marked and maintained but tree falls and river floods can cause confusion.
The Tua Pek Kong Temple is the oldest Chinese temple and building in Sarawak. According to official records, it was built in 1876, but there were also reports that it was actually built in 1843. The Tua Pek Kong Temple, also known as the Shou Shan Ting Temple, is located at the junction of Jalan Fu Luo An and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, just opposite the impressive-looking Astana. In accordance with Chinese custom, the Tua Pek Kong Temple faces a river and has its back against a hill and is hence said to enjoy excellent Feng Shui. One proof of this is that during the tumultuous years of the early 1940s, when all were subject to the destruction of war, the Tua Pek Kong Temple escaped a cruel fate and was not harmed. Unlike other temples, the Tua Pek Kong Temple only has one deity. Nonetheless, many pray for the blessings of Tua Pek Kong for peace and prosperity. Today, the Tua Pek Kong Temple has been decorated with the Nine Patterned Dragon and has become a must-see spot for many tourists.

Bau 石隆门 Bau is located at the upriver of the Sarawak River, approximately 22 miles from Kuching. It is bordered by the Sambas junction of the Indonesian Kalimantan Barat. Bau is a majestic and hilly region and an important border town of Sarawak. It is also well known for producing gold. Bau has rich gold mines, as such during the 19th century, it attracted many labourers who came here to work, have families and who basically set down their roots here. These are the same people who would create poignant stories and legendary characters later. The 1957 Chinese workers’ uprising was an especially tragic and indelible episode in the history of Sarawak. On 18 February 1957, the Chinese mine workers started an armed insurrection. They tore down the banner bearing the words “The Official Residence of Mr. James Brooke” and occupied Kuching city and also all the government buildings overnight. But from 23 February, there came a great change in the situation and the bloodiest disaster in the history of Sarawak also erupted. The Sarawak River instantly became a river of blood, rotting corpses filled the streets of Bau, and the stench of decomposition filled the air for weeks. This is where the name “Bau” came from, which means “smell” and this is also the origin of the name of “Buso”, which means “bad odour”.
