ABOUT SELANGOR HISTORY 历史

Selangor’s history started in the 16th century when rich tin deposits were found in the state. This discovery attracted miners, immigrants and colonizers from within and outside the country, including the Bugis. The Bugis soon rose to prominence – politically and economically.

The constant fighting among the Bugis, Chinese tinminers and Malay nobility forced the Sultan of Selangor to accept the presence of a British Resident in 1874. In 1948, Selangor joined the Federation of Malaya, and in 1957, the Federation became an independent State.

Traveling to Selangor is convenient as it is easily accessible from all major cities and all parts of the country by air, road and rail. One can get to Selangor by sea via Port Klang, or by air through the KLIA, LCCT Airport and Sultan Abdul Aziz Airport, Subang. The North-South Highway provides convenient access to Selangor from Thailand, Singapore and all parts of Peninsular Malaysia. With long distance bus and train services and its vast network connecting major towns, Selangor has a complete transportation system that facilitates traveling and sight-seeing.

KAMPUNG KUANTAN FIREFLIES 甘榜关丹萤火虫

Imagine swarms of fireflies illuminating mangrove trees in the evenings. Imagine cruising down a river on a boat known as a “sampan”. Imagine taking in the sights of stars in the night skies and the sounds of oars breaking the surface of the waters. Kampung Kuantan, 9 km away from Kuala Selangor, offers visitors such wonders. It is an opportunity that a nature enthusiast would not want to miss.

An agricultural Malay village, Kampung Kuantan, is said to be one of only two places in the world to witness such a marvel. Almost fairy-tale like, the fireflies known to the locals as “berembang” and to the scientific community as ‘Sonneratia Caselaris”, have made the wet mangroves their habitat. This species of mangrove plants, known as “Pokok Berembang” in Bahasa Malaysia, provides food and shelter for the enigmatic insects. The sap that flows through the veins of the Berembang leaves offers the fireflies the sustenance they need.

BATU CAVE 黑风洞

Batu Caves is one of Selangor’s most famous tourist destinations. This is especially true when it comes to the colourful Thaipusam Festival. Batu Caves is made up of three main caves (the Temple Cave, Dark Cave and Art Gallery Cave) and a few smaller ones. SEPANG INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT 雪邦国际赛车场

This 260 hectares circuit brought the famed Formula One races to Malaysia. The circuit is well known among internationally renowned drivers as it offers one of the world’s most challenging racetracks. For the spectators, the double frontage grandstand (the only one in the world) provides them full and unobstructed view of the race. 这片占地260公顷的赛车场为马来西亚带来了无限 的名望和荣耀。国际著名的赛车好手都公认它为全 世界最富挑战性的跑道，是全球唯一提供前后开台 的赛车场，是观众能完整地观赏完整个比赛。

The National Zoo is home to some 4,000 animals including birds, fish, mammals and reptiles. Besides watching animals at close range, visitors can enjoy the performances of the Orang Utans, sea lions and birds. Among the facilities here include picnic grounds that overlook the boating lake, restaurants and mini-train rides. The rides provide relief for weary visitors who want to have a quick tour around the zoo. Located at Jalan Hulu Kelang, visitor is advised to take Jalan Ampang when heading for the zoo.

Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) 马来西亚森­林研究院

The Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) is situated in Kepong, 15km away from Kuala Lumpur. It is a forest reserve with a museum, canopy walk, jungle tracks and trees with names labeled on them. It is a world reputed centre for tropical forestry research, has more than 100 years of experience in forestry and forest products research.

The Royal Gallery 皇家展览馆

One of the many interesting and educational museums and galleries in Malaysia is The Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery, located in Klang, Selangor. Opened to the public in 2002, this museum is dedicated to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. This gallery was built in honour of his late father, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah ruled the state of Selangor for over 39 years and he was the nation’s King or the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for two years (1999 – 2001).

The museum houses an impressive display of personal collections, artefacts and gifts belonging to Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. With the vast collection of exhibits, visitors will surely have a comprehensive insight of His Majesty from his early childhood through his appointment as the 8th Sultan of Selangor in 1960 until his appointment as the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 1999.

Visitors will be awed with, among others, the magnificent replicas of the crown jewels of Selangor, the royal seal of the fourth Sultan of Selangor (Sultan Sir Abdul Samad) and the state sword of the fifth Sultan (Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah) which is decorated with Burmese rubies and silver. A visit to this interesting gallery with its engaging exhibits will certainly enrich one’s knowledge about the history of Selangor, in general, and in particular, the life and times of the 8th Sultan of Selangor – a prominent and distinguished ruler.

Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque 莎阿南回教堂

Often referred to as the “Blue Mosque”, the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque is one of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia. Its shining blue dome stands proudly among the largest in the world. Towering at a height of 142.3m, its minarets are the tallest in the world. 号称“蓝色回教堂”，沙阿南回教堂是东南 亚最大的回教堂之一。它那闪闪发亮的蓝色 圆顶，也是全世界最大的回教堂圆顶；高约 142.3公尺的尖塔，是全世界最高的尖塔。

Shady hundred-year-old trees and curiously shaped stones adorn Bukit Melawati. Standing on the top of this hill, one can take pleasure in the panoramic view of the Straits of Melaka. Taman Pertanian 农业公园 Taman Pertanian is the place to be if one wants to have an enjoyable, memorable and educational eco-agro trip. This lush agro-forestry park is set within a tropical rainforest.

Templer’s Park 邓普勒公园 Named after Sir Gerald Templer, a colonial administrator, Templer’s Park is situated about 20km north of Kuala Lumpur. This 1,214-hectare park is a tract of a primary jungle. It attracts nature lovers, photographers and picnickers.

The main attraction here is the gushing waters of the waterfall. Facilities available include sheltered picnic spots and changing areas.

Walkways have been built where necessary to ensure safety. Besides that, there are food stalls, restaurants and ample parking space. Kanching Recreational Forest 肯晴休闲森林 The Kanching Recreational Forest offers a cool and soothing environment for tourists. It is an ideal place for picnics and visitors could take the opportunity to dip in the cool, refreshing water. Commonwealth Forest Park 英国联邦林公园 This park was launched in 1993 to commemorate the 14th Commonwealth Forest Meeting. It is situated on the left side of the main road just after the Templer’s Park and easy to locate.

Tourists that are passing Rawang from KL should stop for a while at Commonwealth Forest Park. Pulau Ketam 吉胆岛 Lies about 10km west of Port Kalang, Ketam Island is a fishing island famous for its picturesque fishing village and unique still houses that rise above the sea. It is also well known for it mouth watering seafood. Carey Island 凯­莉岛 Carey Island is renowned for two things - mouth watering seafood and the aborigine’s community called the Mah Meri, who is legendary for their woodcarvings. Located in Sepang, in the vicinity of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport is Malaysia’s premier ecotourism park. The park is an oasis of lush vegetation and fascinating wildlife such as crocodiles, hippos, pelicans, pink flamingos, swans, Mandarin ducks and Manchurian cranes. Its Palm Garden is reputed to contain the world’s largest collection of palm species.

Its lake teems with aquatic life and is covered with lotus blossoms and towering elephant grass. Activities like cycling, trekking, and canoeing are available for the energetic while those who prefer a slower pace can take a relaxing stroll through the peaceful, landscaped gardens. Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen Temple 佛光山东禅寺

The Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen monastery in Jenjarom, near Banting, Selangor, is a landscape of lanterns and flowers.

In the gardens, the trees bend under the weight of pink cherry blossoms and the tea trees have been sculptured into Bodhisattvas. Thousands of potted plants are placed within the monastery. Most of them in full bloom and fill the air with heady scents. There are three brightly-lit animatronic figures of the Buddha and Boddhisatvas placed outside the main shrine. The temple is a simple and serene place all year round for devotees to meditate. But during the Chinese New Year, the place will bathed in lights and abuzz with interesting activities. Admission free.

To get there, use the Kesas Highway and take the exit at 502 Banting. It takes about one hour from Kuala Lumpur.

Orang Asli Museum, Gombak 鹅唛原­住民博物馆 Located at kilometres 24 of Jalan Gombak, this museum exhibits a collection of tribal artifacts (blowpipes, spears, porcelains and ancestral figurines) - some dating back to 600 years ago. This fascinating museum offers its visitors an insight into the culture and heritage of the aborigines (Orang Asli). 鹅唛原­住民博物馆坐落在鹅唛街24公里，里头展览了传 承了 600 年的原­住民文化遗产，如吹筒、长矛、瓷器及 他们的祖先雕像。这博物馆让游客有一瞥原住民文化历 史的机会，让游客对原­住民的文有更深一层的认识。

Keris Monument 短剑纪念碑 This specially designed memorial depicts the “Keris Semenanjung”, a Malay weapon which symbolises power, strength and unity.
