个案研究 Case study Type: Cycling Logistic Organizer: European Cyclists’ Federation Location: Europe Date: May, 2011 Why Promote Cargo Cycles? The reasons this array of actors is pursuing CYCLE Logistics under the European Cycling Federation (ECF) are fourfold. First, the use of cargo cycling creates a marketable modern, green image of businesses for customers. Second, using cargo cycles to deliver goods without delay, particularly with adequate cycle infrastructure and traffic in motorized vehicle lanes, reduces logistical cost. Third, a cargo tricycle stand can reach locations shops cannot, for lowcost advertising and vending. Fourth, the use of cargo cycles in place of motorized transportation does not contribute to the environmental problems of air quality degradation and carbon emissions.

Cycle Logistic

About CYCLE logistics: Running from May 2011 to 2014 and spanning across 8-12 countries, the project will achieve a concrete reduction in energy used for urban freight transport. This will be accomplished through intra-urban final delivery of goods by bicycle rather than motorized vehicles, using expert know-how from existing cycle logistic companies and inciting policy interventions across Europe. CYCLE Logistics aims to save 1300 tons of fuel and 3500 t/CO2, have 2000 new cargo bikes in use in European urban areas and see at least 10,000 trips shifted to intermodal transport chains.

“All modern, sustainable companies and cities will incorporate delivery of goods by bikes in their logistic systems.” -Dr. Bernhard Ensink, Secretary General of the European Cyclists’ Federation http://thecityfix.com/blog/the-eu-meets-to-discuss-how-to-promote-cargo-cycling/ http://www.ecf.com/

Bike Hanger Type: Bicycle Storage Facility Client: City of Seoul / London Address: Seoul, Korea / London, UK Area: 6 sqm Project Status: Under Development Architects: Manifesto Architecture The Bike Hanger is an essential facility for the urban areas, where people ride bikes more than ever. The Bike Hanger is a vertical bike storage system for between 20-36 bicycles which is installed on the sides of buildings in underutilized urban spaces such as alleys instead of sidewalks, allowing minimal interference with the pedestrian traffic below. The Ferris wheel-like storage system runs on the same energy as bicycle: pedaling. Consequently, the Bike Hanger is friendly to both the environment and pedestrians. The bikes are stored above the street by a retractable locking arm that minimizes the footprint and also adds a layer of security. It is also convenient as bikers do not need to carry a chain or their seats.

个案研究 Case study Type: Bike Parking in railway station Client: Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos Location: Brazil In 2001 Adilson Alcantara, manager of the Mauá CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos) train station in the greater São Paulo region was faced with a challenge: What to do with the hundreds of bicycles precariously and haphazardly chained to every open space of the Mauá train station? At the time, the cycles obstructed the walking lanes for both pedestrians and passengers. The solution: Alcantara developed Latin America’s largest bicycle parking station, which provides parking for nearly 2,000 users daily, repairs and maintenance centers, in addition to social services, such as legal counsel.

Bike Parking in railway station

The Mauá bicycle station in collaboration with ASCOBIKE (Associação dos Condutores de Bicicletas de Mauá), a bicycle riders association, initially began with 200 users but has grown to nearly 2,000 users daily. Around 70 percent of ASCOBIKE users transfer to the CPTM train, a commuter rail serving São Paulo city that connects to the São Paulo metro system. The program has been so successful that it has been replicated across both the CPTM and São Paulo Metro, which collectively now boast more than 44 biciletários (bike stations) with more than 10,600 spaces for bike parking. In addition to the bike stations, São Paulo began a public bike-sharing program in 2009, which at the inauguration date, offered 150 bikes across 15 central metro stations.

On São Paulo’s metro map, the green dots represent bike stations, and green dots with a black circle represent bike sharing stations. Map via CPTM. http://thecityfix.com/blog/sao-paulo-bike-parking-maua-and-more/?utm_source=rss&utm_

个案研究 Case study Akihabara is a major shopping area for electronic, computer, anime, and otaku goods, including new and used items. New items are mostly to be found on the main street, Chūōdōri, with many kinds of used items found in the back streets of Soto Kanda 3-chōme. New parts for PC-building are readily available from a variety of stores. Tools, electrical parts, wires, microsized cameras and similar items are found in the cramped passageways of Soto Kanda 1-chōme (near the station). Foreign tourists tend to visit the big name shops like Laox or other speciality shops near the station, though there is more variety and lower prices at locales a little further away. Akihabara gained some fame through being home to one of the first stores devoted to personal robots and robotics.

New metal structure

Dutch architecture firm, MVRDV, designed an extension for the Didden family on top of an existing monumental house and atelier. The attic storey of the house below is extended by a sky-blue parapet. Behind it two gables of the same colour can be seen. It creates a crown on top of the monument. The extension is an example of the growing trend to exploit the urban roofscape for new living and working spaces.

New Roof Structure

Le Fresnoy Art Center

图片解释 New Roof Structure

Architects: Bernard Tscumi Project location: Tourcoing Date: 2007 Program: Rehabilitation and Extension of LeFresnoy Art Center The project suspends a large, ultra-technological roof, pierced by cloud-like glass openings and containing all necessary ductwork for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, over many of the existing 1920s structures. The format of the project is a succession of boxes inside a box. First, a new, resolutely contemporary facade encloses the ensemble of buildings in a rectangular box. The north side of the box is made out of corrugated steel, while the curtain wall facades of the southern sector give a transparent image to the entrance and main building facade. The other sides remain open, providing views of the old and new within and of the technical ductwork suspended under the new roof and over the old ones. The spaces between the two roofs contain places for installations and film projections located along a dramatic sequence of walkways.

Top-down circulation system Existing building

Sketches from Bernard Tscumi

Within the container-box are the boxes of the existing Fresnoy facilities, supplemented by newlydesigned ones, including exhibition spaces, sound studios and assorted production facilities, a library, a cinema, a restaurant, and apartments for faculty and students—all of them protected from inclement weather by the sheltering and all-encompassing umbrella of the new roof.

New Roof Structure Top-down circulation system

The roof acts as the project’s common denominator. In keeping with the Surrealist image of the meeting of the umbrella and the sewing machine on the dissecting table, the scheme of the project aims to accelerate chanceevents by combining diverse elements, juxtaposing the great roof, the school and research laboratory, and the old Fresnoy, a place of spectacle. The whole is precise and rational in its concept, and varied and poetic in the resulting spatial richness.

Central Mid-level escalator and walk-way system Hong Kong Transportation Department Project location: Hong Kong Date: 1993 Program: Central Mid-level escalator and walk-way system Opened in 1993, the Central--Mid-Levels Escalator and Walkway System consists of covered walkways, 18 reversible one-way escalators and 3 travelators. It starts at Des Voeux Road Central, passes through narrow streets and ends at Conduit Road. The escalators are 800 metres (2,600 ft) long with a vertical climb of 135 metres (443 ft). The total travel time is twenty minutes, but most people walk while the escalator moves to shorten their trip. Due to the geographical situation, the same distance is equivalent to several miles of zigzagging roads if travelling by car. It consists of twenty escalators and three moving side-walks. According to Guinness World Records, these escalators together form the longest outdoor covered escalator system. Everyday, it runs one-way downhill from 6:00a.m. to 10:00a.m. and then uphill from 10:00a.m. to midnight. The escalator is a transit link for residents of the Mid-Levels. The system is used by about 81,000 passenger journey daily in latest 2008.

Architects Completion: June, 2011 Iconic success Since completion of Metropol Parasol, the Plaza de la Encarnación has been re-energized with adjacent shops reporting record sales and eager queues of sevillanos and tourists ascending by elevator to enjoy stunning views of the city from a new perspective. Metropol Parasol has become the city’s new icon, with ceremonies and interviews traditionally shrouded in the town hall or city square now taking advantage of the city’s new landmark. A testament to the social and economic benefits in addition to new material technologies and contemporary architecture, the building is also enjoying widespread support after initially facing divided opinions.

The Mountain Dwelling Client: Høpfner A/S Location: Copenhagen, Denmark Date: August, 2008 Area: 33,000 sqm Architect: BIG Architects The Mountain Dwellings are the 2nd generation of the VM Houses – same client, same size and same street. The program, however, is 2/3 parking and 1/3 living. What if the parking area became the base upon which to place terraced housing – like a concrete hillside covered by a thin layer of housing, cascading from the 11th floor to the street edge? Rather than doing two separate buildings next to each other – a parking and a housing block – we decided to merge the two functions into a symbiotic relationship. The parking area needs to be connected to the street, and the homes require sunlight, fresh air and views, thus all apartments have roof gardens facing the sun, amazing views and parking on the 10th floor. The Mountain Dwellings appear as a suburban neighbourhood of garden homes flowing over a 10-storey building – suburban living with urban density. http://www.archdaily.com/15022/mountain-dwellings-big/

Photo montage of New proposition - Roofscrape in the city

The fabric of Gangsha village is congested and vernacular. The building is growing in all dimensions for more space. Some of the building is lack of consideration of building services and living quality. The share community space and supporting facilities are also missing in the village. The residents will use the remaining vacant space, like back lane and corridor for leisure or landry purpose. The new intervention is not to break the whole existing fabric. The additional space on roof is to bring supplemental use to the village. Extension of house could be a hostel for the residents to make a living. Roof garden could be a shared space for community. New separated horizontal circulation is to provide shortcuts to visitors to the village. The bridge itself could also serve as a viewing decking to provide different angle to the city. The visitors could access to the roof top by top down circulation and do not affect the living pattern of local people.
