PARKING PARKS STRATEGIC RECLAMATION OF PARKING LOTS IN DOWNTOWN BATON ROUGE Baton Rouge, the capitol of Louisiana, is the state’s primary political hub. Settled in 1719 by the French and with heavy influences from the Spanish and British, the city is heavily influenced by European design and culture. Currently, the city has a population of 230,000, however due to mass urban sprawl, the Downtown area is struggling to revitalize itself. Over the past 10 years a series of successful projects has laid a foundation for the heart of the city to become a social and cultural hub once again. Through precedent studies and site analysis, the project explores the potential to make Downtown Baton Rouge a walkable place to live, work, and play by improving the urban green system. This project is a first phase to enhance the current developments Downtown has seen in the past 10 years. A series of strategies to reclaim surface parking lots as public open spaces, the project envisions a new urban living place for the influx of people to Downtown. Named Tactical Urbanism, the inspiration for the project presents the challenge to remove all surface parking lots in downtown urban environments. Three parking lot sites have been selected based on key programs: a temporary outdoor event space on Third Street, a new plaza on Laurel Street, and a Recreational hub on Sixth Street. Each program will reclaim and potentially become a catalyst for future development around each site and further the redevelopment of Downtown Baton Rouge.

8 Site Context

Baton Rouge is a city where some of the world’s most advance industrial facilities share space with antebellum mansions and Native American burial grounds. Cutting-edge technology has chiseled a firm foothold in this thriving industrial and agricultural center that still retains the charm and romance of the Old South. Proud of its history and excited about its future, Baton Rouge provides a peaceful, quiet lifestyle, or all the bustling, metropolitan activity you could ask for- all in one of the most extraordinay places to live and work anywhere in the country.

BEFORE ^ An existing parking lot located just a block away from the Red Stick Farmers Market. The parking lot is barely used and currently closed for parking. due to a potential future mixed use development to replace the parking lot. While there’s a need for extra community gathering space, the proposed design suggests to transform the parking lot into a plaza space for residents and downtown workers includes water play, playground, food stalk, outdoor seatings, and allows for temporary used event space throughout the year.

for food trucks businesses during the day and host seasonal festivals throughout the year for residents who live and work in downtow. The proposed design focuses on strengthening the exsiting 3rd Street culture, which is where most residents called an entertainment district.

AFTER

BEFORE ^ An existing parking lot for the U.S. Post Office located next to the Convention Street Park has been underutilized. With a continuing

Downtown Greenway project that will soon be inplemented on 6th Street, the proposed design for this parking lot will be transforming into a recreational hub that provides 2 tennis courts and a skate park.

AECOM 2015: ALL SYSTEM GO . BANGKOK CITY A global open ideas competition co-hosted by AECOM, Van Allen Institute, and 100 Resilient Cities. All Systems Go calls on multidisciplinary teams of students to envision more resilient food, water, and energy systems for supplying cities and regions today and in the future. It challenges student teams to identify an urban population facing the possibility of disruption to its food, energy, or water systems, and offer strategies that strengthen these systems’ ability to withstand future shocks or stresses, while also making them more efficient, equitable, and accessible to diverse populations. Proposals must be located in one of 67 cities that currently make up the 100 Resilient Cities network. While Bangkok city in Thailand considered one of a resilient cities network, the design proposal seeks to tackle current canal condition that is improper and outdated to then provide a better healthy environment for the city. Canal not only serves as a main commute system but canal water also used as drinking water for the entire city. Due to the lack of knowledge and sources to improve canal condition, for a long time, household’s wastewater discharge into the canal do not see it as an issue. This can easily lead to a big environmental impact to an unhealthy drinking water and the ecosystem that exists in the canal.

THE GENER ATOR CREATING A RECREATIONAL, CULTURAL, TOURISM CENTER ATTRACTION There are 3 opportunities to elaborate in the deisgn proposal. Historical assets, identity, and local economy. The concept is driven by the historical uses of the area such as meatpacking and stockyard. Historically, the ideas of cattle deliver and frieght rail that seperate the river and stockyard at that time. It excluded the river and the stockyard since than, therefore, the site shows no relationship to the surrounding area. The idea to restich to provide a physical connection betwwen the river and the stockyard and taking the historical background which the site was once used to deliver materials but now will deliver people instead. Creating a relationship between people with natural enviroment (river). To do so, taking advantage to existing buildings and repurpose into a multi functional spaces, and creating more outdoor gathering spaces.

RE VITALIZE SUBURB GR ACIE CREATING A COMMUNITY FRIENDLY AND SOUTHERN LIVING STYLE NEIGHBORHOOD The site located within 5 miles radius from Downtown Baton Rouge. Current site condition is abandoned, nasty, and unsafe; I-110 being so closed to the site is also one of the main exit to downtown Baton Rouge; a train track that runs twice a day to pick up and drop off goods; and few cemetaries that was home to many soldiers who fought for the land of Baton Rouge decades ago etc; This unique conditions was thought to be a potential site to revitalize in accordance with Downtown Baton Rouge Master Plan. Although the site is not part of downtown, the city believes the site is suitable for new developments including mixed used housing, low to high density housing. The design concept as a narrative is to create a community similar to my hometown in Malaysia at a small town I grew up in. Though the culture and lifestyle are different, I believe the core of a good community should be pretty closed which is community friendly. People who live in the neighborhood feel like they own the place, they have a voice to speak, and a place to socialize and get together. A primary design is an urban farm is designate to be a place to gather and provide local foods for the community while not limited to also provide educational purpose for students from K-1 to College.

Lastly, in addition to these desire amenities and personal opinion of what a good community should compromise, a smart site planning has to involve so that the entire community will look cohesive and harmonize. Farm Location Strategy Left: This thought process diagram is to show where is the best location to locate urban farm. There are four locations are suitable. #1. Good source of water for irrigation but doesn’t give a sense of connection and entrance while driving in to the neigborhood from Spanish Town. #2. Goods source of water for irrigation and isthe lowest point on the site, but it feels like it is seperated from Spanish Town Rd. #3. Enough source of water for irrigation, but the farm will be a clear seperation before and after the train track. #4. Is the best location because of the source of water, it can avoids flooding and is the focal point of the neigborhood.

Crops Seasonal Rotation Strategy Total farm land= 24 sections farm Each square classify into different crops: Winter-- strawberry, cabbage, tomato, orange etc.Summer-- beans, sweet corn, sweet potato etc. Fallow-- any ground cover plants etc. ** Fallow uses as green mutation. It locates in between winter and summer crop land for the purpose of killing disease and insects.

Re-purposed a 8-acre wood lot into an urban farm. This farm will eventually serve as a spot where it brings the community together as well as providing a new location for Red Stick Farmer Market which is currently held on 5th and Main Street.

GR APHIC DESIGN IN MERCHANT SENDIRIAN BERHAD, MALAYSIA Landscape architecture is my background, but I consider myself as a designer, creative thinker, and an observer. Graphic design has always interest me, and I constantly improve my skills. Obtaining a degree in landscape architecture easily mislead others to believe graphic design has nothing to do with landscape architecture design. In fact, landscape architecture has anything to do with graphic design because it is also an art and design profession. Only graphic design is not the primary concern.

I remember my first graphic design project that was done in my senior year in high school. The logo design used as a theme for Class of 2008 Thanksgiving Banquet. The logo was used on t-shirts that every graduating class students wore at the event. Second and most recent freelance graphic design work I did was to design a branding/ logo for a landscape nursery and maintenance company my brother runs. You wil see on the right page, which I completed a full branding packaging including business card, website, and brochure etc. I will also continue assist my brother’s company for further graphic design updates.

LSU MEMORY GARDEN CREATING A MEMORABLE OUTDOOR GATHERING COURTYARD Burden Museum and Gardens began in the late 1800s as Windrush Plantation, a wedding gift to John Charles Burden and Emma Gertrude Barbee. The property had passed down to three generations. Their ancestral home and the community sparked the idea to preserve Windrush by creating a place that would foster agricultural and horticultural research, provide a destination for generations to appreciate and learn about Louisiana’s rich rural and cultural heritage, and give people a place to experience the beauty of the natural world. Today, Burden Museum and Gardens is guided by the generosity and vision of the Burden family through the stewardship of the Burden Foundation, LSU and the LSU AgCenter. The design takes inspiration from the context whether it is landscape or hardscape. Client wants to have a outdoor public space that serves as a memorable garden while it is not used, but able to make used of it when there are events (wedding, arbor day fest, any celebrations). With the limitation of using evergreen plants and no water fountain, the garden must be straightforward and shows simplicity and meaningful. One major hardscape is the engraved bricks that layout on site with donators’ name engraved. Overall, the garden is currently constructed and being used several times since built. LOCATION: Baton Rouge, Louisiana TYPE: Public Space
