2013 Sony Annual Report

Publication technique and Infographics

Annual Report

Brief and Description This project was tasked to challenge a design student to recreate a publication. By redesigning an existing annual report, we had to establish hierarchy and organization and create infographics that are creative and captivating. According to the project brief, the annual report had to include five graphs and seven tables. The entire book had to follow an established brand and style. I chose to use swiss design and capitalize on negative space. The publication was only black and white and magenta to provide a modern, minimal approach and atmosphere to amplify the Sony brand. My favorite detail in this publication is the laser etched cover. Because the title is etched out, it introduces an interactive aspect and focuses on the minimalistic nature of the title.

Hotel Branding and Collateral

Hotel Branding, Speakeasy Branding, and Collateral

Hotel Branding

Brief and Description This project was a collaborative piece involving interior design students. All of the graphic design work was created after discussing colors, names, and style with my partner. This was challenging in the aspect that all brainstorming was done together, yet I created each design piece alone to accentuate my partners interior design pieces. This particular hotel branding and collateral was designed for the target audience of the warehouse district of LoDo-Denver, Colorado. Art Deco style was chosen appropriate to emphasize attributes within a warehouse district. Apart from branding, collateral pieces like menu’s for a speakeasy within the hotel, vodka bottle labels, and a wayfinding system was created within this Art Deco style.

Ginger Ale 4 Pack

Nostalgic Package Design and Bottle Label

Ginger Ale 4 Pack

Brief and Description This project was tasked to challenge a student to create a design for a four pack of either Ginger Ale or Beer. We also had to choose a time period to designate style attributes toward. Nostalgia was the theme to research. I chose to do my project on Ginger Ale based on 1940s style design. I decided to name this Ginger Ale Dynamite because it was a catchy saying in the 1940s. I also put thought and consideration behind design attributes like stars and funky shapes based on 1940s graphic design. The scripty typography with an underlining glow was also based on a study from typography in the 1940s. The bottle type, shape, and size was considered when designing for this time period. There was considerable study done on shelf presence. What can stand out among other Ginger Ale’s? I determined that the 1940s style bottle and attributes along with the distribution of color creates shelf presence. One of the biggest challenges when creating this product was the size and shape of the 4 pack carrier. I designed many prototypes based on the particular bottle measurements to create a durable carrier that was printed on one sheet of heavy cardstock. The handles fit together but sliding into each other using a slit. I felt that this design was very efficient and stable.

Netflix Ad Campaign

Billboard Mockup Popular Netflix Series Ad Campaign

Netflix Ad Campaign

Brief and Description This project has been expanded upon. Originally the task was to create a piece for an advertisement that emulates an existing illustrator. I chose to study and represent Shepard Fairey when creating an illustration. The first billboard I created was the Mad Men one. I decided to use Shepard Fairey’s style of illustration that focuses on silhouettes and shadowing to capture features. The imagery chosen for each billboard was derived from iconic imagery and subject matter within each Netflix series. Each color palette is based on the series it is depicting. Texture is also used within the backgrounds of each billboard that is appropriate to the show it is representing. For example, Mad Men uses halftones because based on the time period of this show, halftones was a pop culture attribute that was iconic. This campaign piece exemplifies my illustration skills as well as my ability to emulate other designers. The study behind this work has made me more conscious of design decisions and attributes other designers use in their work.

Social Cause Ad Campaign #HomophobesSuck69

Social Cause Campaign

Brief and Description This particular project was challenging because a lot of study went into communicating design and controlling the reaction from the audience of your work. The project was to promote a social cause and to choose an established graphic designer’s style to effectively communicate the message. Graphic Designers have the power of persuasion. When promoting a social cause, a designer must determine what kind of reaction they are needing from their audience and what kind of impact their design can have. Is it a positive impact? Is emotion use? When channeling the reaction I want from my audience, I decided to be blatant and use the shock factor to communicate my message. Because I chose to go this route, I determined that David Carson’s style was appropriate. The grunge factor and in your face imagery that David Carson conveys in his work was fitting for the reaction I sought from my audience. For the purpose of this project, we were tasked to create imagery to be printed on a skateboard. Since then, I expanded on this project by creating an ad campaign relevant to the original design.

Norwegian Restaurant Branding

Cultural Study of Restaurant Branding and Lookbook Collateral

Restaurant Branding

Brief and Discription This project was meant to be an exploration into cultural design. Each student was allowed to pick a country from a list to construct restaurant branding, atmosphere, and collateral. I chose Norway as my country of study. I decided to use a modern Norwegian approach to design instead of the cliche old style of Norway. The name Koldtbord was derived from the Scandinavian word Smorgasbord. Along with branding, we were tasked to create a lookbook to exemplify the atmosphere of the particular restaurant and style. The objective of this book is to show the viewer an insight into the particular country and into what the atmosphere of the inside of the restaurant would feel like. A study of senses was relevant for this task.

Website Rebrand & Ad Campaign

Bangs Shoes Ecommerce Website and Social Media Ads

Website & Ad Campaign

Brief and Description This website is a redesign of an existing Ecommerce site. Obviously the website had to be designed to be reactively resized. Certain attributes were applied to each platform to create an atmosphere. Along with the redesign of the website, a social media ad campaign expanded this project. The goal was to make sure that the ad campaign was cohesive with the redesign brand.

Food Truck Branding

Food Truck Packaging and Truck Design

Food Truck Branding

Brief and Description For this project, each student had to choose a particular location and cultural cuisine. I chose Cajun food with a food truck location in the French Quarter in New Orleans. Considering the culture and location, I decided to use VooDoo as a theme and created branding based on the VooDoo culture and night life of New Orleans. This project was a study into functional design. How does a package function efficiently? How can it fit in a confined space like a truck? I chose to create packaging using flat designs that can be folded into a functional container. The bowl can be easily stackable. Also along with packaging, the truck design was meant to be eye catching and consistent with the brand.

Outdoor Guide Service Branding Senior Capstone

Senior Capstone

Brief and Discription Senior Capstone is the biggest project during undergrad. The challenge with this project is that there are no restrictions or parameters. I chose to create an outdoor guide service and create purposeful collateral. Aside from the design of these pieces, we had to write a proposal and a ten page research paper. This project is very research heavy and provides visual organization to ample information.
