Kenwood Academy Link Addition Kenwood Academy was one of the first Chicago Public school to create an Advanced Academic Center Program in the city much less on the South Side, and yet they are the last to get a bridge connecting the main school building to the AC Annex. Another Capitol Improvment project here was to build this “Link”. I worked closely with the Landscape Architect and Structural Engineers to come up with a chevron truss and dynamic design to allow fire truck access to the newly renovated athletic track and field. My role included concept, internal team lead, Revit modeling direction, and Architect coordinating disciplines and meeting deadlines.

Pilsen Arts & Community Housing The proposed Pilsen Arts & Community Apartments, located on 1814 South Ashland Ave, will consist of a new 41,000 square foot, 7-story addition to an existing 4-story 12,000 square foot structure, totalling 53,000 square feet total. The new addition will contain 44 affordable studios, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom apartments for individuals and families in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. Interior parking for 4 cars will be located on the ground floor. Select units will have either Juliette or full balconies. Project is designed to comply with Enterprise Green Communities certification. My role was the design lead, Revit modeler, and team leader. We explored multiple iterations of the stair and elevator core concept that would determine not only the exiting but also the unit layouts.

Kenwood Academy principal was excited for the capital improvement of removing the existing 1960’s flooring which contained aesbestos and putting in a new VCT tile to go along with their updated ACT ceiling and wireless lighting. I engaged Armstrong flooring early on in the process to enlist their rendering services. So I presented three sketch plans and had those options ready to present to Chicago Public Schools at large as well as the local principal. The back and forth provided an opportunity for a hybrid design providing greater wayfinding and branding to the school’s various wings of the school. My role was Project Architect, Designer, and CDs & CA.

KWA - Hillsdale Site

PROFESSIONAL - Master Planning / Feasibility

The Korean Women’s Association develops affordable housing in Washington. They partnered with the Tacoma Housing Authority to buy this vacant site in Tacoma to develop senior and family housing. They contacted EW to see what they could get on it with the new zoning and strict parking requirements. Their goal for the East half of the site was to house seniors and for the parcel to the West, families. I master planned the entire 12 acre site in two phases with 358,160 SF 3/4/2018 Maps of mixed income housing using new and existing unit plans from theTacoma office.- Google I also took into consideration the abutting rail line and need for drainage on the Tacoma site by creating a 100’ buffer on the West side. I also planned for and designed recreation for seniors and children per the program.

Whimsical Whispering Pines

PROFESSIONAL - Master Planning / Feasibility

Whispering Pines is a wonderful opportunity to add density to a rapidly growing city right outside of Seattle. The client came to us looking for a feasibility for maximum unit/parking count and decided to pair down to meet their desire for more appropriate scale and desired open space for residents. The project manager and I led a ‘Design Tea’ within our office to generate multiple alternative schemes. I then used these schemes to generate a final concept of 350 units for the client. I then worked with the landscape architect to dream up a concept of how to best integrate the site through open space and recreation. (Final concept Right).

Final Concept - I QC’d Graphics by Others


El Nor Apartments is one of the many low income housing projects owned by Capitol Hill housing in Seattle. This 1901 brick building has 55 one bedroom units for seniors with a common laundry and craft room on a 24,000 SF lot in the Low Rise 3 Urban Village zone. My role was to do an existing as-built off of pdfs from a prior renovation as well as on site measurements of the overall building footprint, roof penetrations, entry way details and corridors as well as the final proposed plans and elevations for the permit set. I also work independently on the schematic design for the proposed renovation of the center ‘connector’ part of the building that was joined back in 1971 with a marblecrete finish containing asbestos. I presented iterations to the client team.

Ponderosa is a 23 unit low-income senior housing project owned by Capitol Hill Housing. The scope of the project was to do a compete reclad with new windows as well as new kitchens and flooring. My role was to lead an office wide ‘Design Tea’ to generate as many ideas as possible to make this long ‘box’ into a more dynamic and interesting facade. Below are the two main concepts that I drafted and presented to the client team. Further below is the final combined iteration submitted for permit. I helped manage a contract worker in the execution of the 3D model and conducted quality control for the design options for final presentation. In the CD set a drafted the site plan and QC’d and edited the door schedule.

The Ethiopian Community Center is a highly prioritized project at the City of Seattle. The ECC has been a strong presence in the Ranier Beach community over the years. They are looking to build a new, larger community center with housing for it’s seniors above. I was part of the team that facilitated discussions among the members of the community, young and old, to see exactly what their goals and priorities were for their new space, to help them craft a vision.

Flowing Lake Ranger Station

Flowing Lake Park entry improvement was a multidisciplinary project that combined civil, landscape, structural & architecture. The aim was to redesign their vehicle entrance and exit system while adding a space that would host as a welcome center and ticket fee station. The design included a landscaped plaza to the North of the welcome center for visitors to enjoy sheltered away from traffic movement. The building itself contains an office for up to 6 rangers, including a kitchen and bathroom, as well as a retail area with a lobby. The building’s exterior design was intended to match the vernacular of existing buildings within the campground. My role included writing the programming questionnaire for the landscape team lead to use in meeting with client about their architectural scope needs.I prepared graphics and images in the form of a Powerpoint presentation for the kick-off design charette presentation with rangers, county representatives, soils, landscape, and others. I developed 3 design schemes based on the information gathered at the charette. Then, took a final combined design to a 100% design development package.

Sellwood Mixed Use Housing The Sellwood Apartments contained over 230+ units in a 4-story wood framed building, with ground floor retail in a U-shaped building with large central courtyard, underground car and bike parking with extensive outdoor and indoor shared amenities including fitness center and gym. My role on the project was to take a basic layout/schematic design intent and create a design document set as well as design the units that would fit into the basic layout, ensuring that they met ANSI accessibility standards. I later managed a team and delegated work to push the drawings forward in less than 6 months time while working on another project.

Compressor Apartments The Compressor Apartments is located in the inner South East neighborhood which is quickly being revived with new investment of housing and retail along major corridors. Compressor is an 80+ unit, 4-story wood building with rooftop community room and terrace. It also supplies underground parking and bike storage. The building is highly efficient with compact studio units and a minimal entry. The facade design uses a subtle hint of real dark wood to compliment the cool tones of the fiber cement. My role was to take the schematic Sketch Up model and turn it into a fully developed Revit model while producing a design document set. I also detailed the units to meet ANSI accessibility standards and created layout options for the amenity space for the client to consider.

PROFESSIONAL - Construction Documents

The North Cook Apartments is a 104-unit, mixed-use urban project in NE Portland. The project is proposed to be four story wood construction over a post-tension slab, for a total of 5 stories. The building includes a varied mix of studio and one bedroom unit types, on grade, tuck under parking with corner ground floor retail, main lobby, leasing office/mail, bike storage, fitness room, pet wash room, as well as a rooftop deck and community room. I helped compose planning application documents for the city as well as see to the development of the construction document set. I helped detail and document the unit plan sheets.

Caples Terrace is a 22,000 SF, 25-unit affordable housing project located in Vancouver, WA. Part of the Vancouver Housing Authority’s comprehensive redevelopment of the original wartime neighborhood, including a boys and girls club and new community center. The multifamily apartment building will provide housing for at-risk homeless youth aging out of the foster care system. The site plan responds to the new public uses across the street by orienting the management office and main entrance towards new facilities, creating a strong connection between the new building and the community. The parking layout and building orientation worked to help preserve the 200+ year old trees on the site. I performed a site visit and analysis of site using aerial photos. We conducted a meeting with the existing property manager and building maintenance crew to coordinate best practices and desires moving forward. I did a zoning and code review before design. We developed the program from the needs of the client’s proforma and mission of the project. I produced a full set of schematic design drawings for a funding package that they took to the state.

ACADEMIC - Master’s Thesis

The focus of this Thesis was to tackle the much ignored issues of health, access to resources, economic growth and development, education and job opportunities in the ignored parts of cities like the Far South Side of Chicago. First by addressing the issue of food deserts, this project can begin to suggest solutions to some of the larger systemic problems in the area. The point is that the area needs a seed, a catalyst, a uniting of efforts, a cause, something to start the change. The solution then will help empower and provide knowledge and resources to the community members to take charge of their neighborhood and their lives. With ACCESS come AWARENESS; AWARENESS leads to EDUCATION and EXPOSURE; and that KNOWLEDGE and POWER gives you the CHOICE to take ACTION and CHANGE. The design brought together multiple play actors in the neighborhood, creating an intergenerational, collaborative, healthy space. It introduces an accessible and comfortable urban area to a normally busy, car-centric thoroughfare. The buildings act as public forums, providing spaces for the community to come to gather together. The aim of the building’s structure and the program was to expose the inner workings of the growing, preparing and cooking of healthy food. I completed the design using hand sketching and diagramming, Revit, Illustrator, and Photoshop.

In the fall of 2015 the city of Portland declared a state of emergency on housing due to the high number of homeless living on the streets. The crisis led to the formation of the Village Coalition, a group made up of advocates, activists, and houseless individuals committed to combating homelessness from many sides of the issue. The Center for Public Interest Design put together a workshop/charette for the area’s best architects to interface with this vulnerable population to come together to create new design solutions within stipulations set by the city (thus the term ‘POD’ and not Tiny House). Our solution focused on creating a “porch culture.” The simple shed structures all sloped toward a central rain garden which acts as a shared ‘front yard’ to each of their homes. The variety of organizations of the PODs make it perfect to adapt to different sites. We also used double stud construction for extra warmth and insulation. Partner: Don Lever

For people who are used to sleeping on the cold hard ground, what would be important in a new home for them? Insulation. We decided to build a double stud wall to reduce the thermal bridging in the exterior wall. This will allow for a higher R value, and a warmer home.

COMPETITION

PORCH The idea behind the porch is to not have the residents all living in boxes in lonely isolation, but to begin to create a social and open community to live in together as a family. A porch provides a space to sit and pass the time, but also an open forum for people to come and go to socialize as they please. It provides a place to sit outside and enjoy the elements of nature. While the porch is a detachable ‘add on’ feature, it’s really non-negotiable in the overall master plan scheme.

One of the strongest takeaways from our site visit to hazelnut grove was that you can’t go at it alone. It takes community to thrive in such harsh conditions. There is strength in the village concept, where people come together around a common purpose. • Our pod concept can be arranged in a number of master planned scenarios to fit any site configuration. They all use groupings of 3 pods around a central rain garden. This creates a mini neighborhood that the residents can live in and begin to form relationships through. • The rain garden provides a sort of ‘yard’ for the people to watch grow and enjoy throughout the seasons, while also gathering the water from the sloping roofs. • The porches provide casual seating for residents to sit and socialize from the comfort of their own ‘home.’ • There is ample storage in and outside the units as that was a major concern that we heard about at the charrette in october. • The building uses a double stud wall in attempts to keep the building as warm as possible. 2' - 2 1/2"

This competition was dreamed up by a Portland area surgeon and his desire to build his own clinic in Haiti. He partnered with the University of Oregon architecture group along with Waterleaf Architecture and OSU to put on a competition to get ideas rolling for the new clinic. There was a basic program given and an unknown site. We devised a simple parti separating the general clinic from the surgery wing. The design was heavily focused on sustainability measures that could be incorporated as well as the imperative to use local building materials and craftsmanship in the detailing. We incorporated decorative open masonry blocks as well as ornate iron screens over the windows and a custom mosaic tile floor. There is a clear structural grid that all the rooms are based off of. The outdoor areas provided shade and education for the people waiting to be seen. We envisioned water catchment off of the large roofs into rain barrels and composting toilets. The concept could easily be reoriented, adapted and expanded upon based on the future site constraints. I helped design the layout in plan,determine the roof forms, built the Revit model, exported views for the graphics, designed the sustainability diagram along with doing the water calculations. This primary school set in 15th Arrondissement in Paris, France aimed to recreate an urban campus, complete with a more public administrative courtyard or square, and a more informal lawn for the students. The design allows students to meander through the site to arrive at their final classroom destinations, giving them a sense of responsibility and independence. This is much like the lives they already lead, living in the big city. The classrooms of the 5 grades were grouped in pairs and stacked in such a way as to make covered walkways between them. The play in building height provides interest and diversity among the site, creating landmarks and pocket parks along the way. There is also a multipurpose room, play court and grassy amphitheater in the back of the heavily graded site. I did most of my design exploration in marker, diagramming, produced final drawings in AutoCAD and hand cut my final model.
