concept and design:
BEDROOM PERSPECTIVE
Inspiration for the master bedroom evolved from a vase that my Grandmother brought to America from Italy when she was a child, which I now have in my possession. The Tuscan ceramic vase which offers bright colors, curves, and a fresh ambience with a country style history. The room is designed with Tuscan furniture and French antiques that the chosen client own. The master bedroom ties together through curves and floral patterns, (such as the Tuscan ceramics) and aged materials and accessories that work with similar finishes (such as the French Antiques). As a finished product, the final ambience of the room will be fresh with an antique country ambience. .

materials and furniture: The master bedroom consists of many bright colors that reflect the style of the Tuscan pottery. Stones, venetian plasters, and antique patterns are all brought together to offer a cooler, fresh appeal to the master bedroom. Furniture chosen reflects a refurbished trend of antique Italian furniture, with antique accents such as chandeliers, mirrors, vases, and other accesoories to show Italian design and also antique design for the client at hand.

Carport: Located on west side of the building due to the warmth of the west afternoon sun. Pergolas are used for shading in the summer and offer more sunlight in the winter.
Orientation and Site: The passive solar windows must face within 15 degrees of due south to maximize solar gain in the winter and minimize overheating in the summer.
Nightly Used Rooms: Best located on the north side, unless used more often in the day. Due to size of the bedroom, it will not be as actively used as other rooms.
OFFICE
Decreased Amount of East/West Glass Areas: Reduces summer cooling needs because it prevents unwanted sun from entering the home in the morning and afternoon.

Thermal Mass Storage: Trombe walls are sun-facing walls separated from the outdoors by glass and an air space, which absorbs solar energy and releases it selectively towards the interior at night.

Porch: Located on the east side of the home because it has a more comfortable temperature as compared to the warm western sun in the afternoon. Pergolas are also used on this side of the home.
KITCHEN
Increased Amount of South-Facing Glass Area: Allows sunlight to help warm the home in the winter months when the sun is lower. South-facing windows receive close to three times as much sunlight as east and west windows in the winter and a third less sunlight in the summer.
Effective Window Shading: Reduces summer cooling needs and glare in the southern part of the home. Window shading or blind usage at night can be used to help trap the heat absorbed by thermal mass.
Frequently Used Rooms: Living room and kitchens work well on the south side. The kitchen is particularly placed on south-east side of home because the south-west side tends to be the warmest area of the home.
concept: The concept behind the sustainable cottage is derived from passive solar design. As of today, Vancouver, British Columbia, is one of the most sustainable cities in the world. After further research into the types of homes that are being built in Vancouver, the West 21st House designed by Frits de Vries became of interest. Frits de Vries created this home based off of many sustainable capabilities, particularly revolving around passive solar design. EXTERIOR 3D MODEL
By keeping the West 21st home in mind, the cottage is a very contemporary, post and beam construction consisting of elevated ceiling and floor levels. This is how the sustainable cottage is designed and how passive solar design is incorporated.

Under Cabinet Lighting: Used to light underneath the upper cabinetry. Consists of dimmable LEDs.
Track Lighting: Used to focus light on particular kitchen areas. Consists of 5 watt LED lights and 50 watt halogen bulbs.
Rope Lighting: Used for above cabinetry glow. Consists of LEDs and they generate little heat and have a long-life span.
design: By referring the aspect of passive solar design to design the sustainable cottage, key factors had to be offered in the home. These factors revolved around the position of the sun, how the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, how the sun is lower in the winter season, and also the latitude of where the sustainable cottage is located. Passive solar homes are designed to take advantage of local climates by maximizing the energy from the sun to heat and cool the home. The sun warms the home in the winter, and shading devices, such as overhangs, are designed to block the sun in the summer months to reduce the amount of air cooling necessary. Passive solar design creates an energy efficient, comfortable home that reduces energy consumption that saves money as well as valuable resources.

EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE
The American Eagle Kiosk is theoretically placed in the Pittsburgh International Airport. For this project, concept was derived from research of the company of American Eagle, and how they designed their stores, focusing on layout, finishes, and space planning. Similiar to American Eagle’s tactics, there is one large display on the main wall that is seen through the window, with a hidden door to get to the back of house area. There is also two moveable tables that can be pushed inside during closed hours and one register due to the small size of the location.

INTERACTIVE AREA
concept and design:

INTERACTIVE AREA PERSPECTIVE
The Modcloth concept derived from an empty sketchook. A sketchbook is an item that an artist or designer uses to draw ideas and put their imagination on paper; such as the blog and website that Modcloth has today. Whether drawings a 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional obeject in a sketchbook, the sketch itselt is still (realistically) a 2-dimensional object, which is a flat piece of paper. “Bringing design to Reality is the concept meaning that the consumer of Modcloth can create orginiality from the beginning phase of design. The Modcloth pop-up offers a space where designers can show off their made clothing and others can critique it in their own way by drawing at the design area or submitting an opinion in the interactive area. The person with the most positive feedback on their clothing can then sell their items to Modcloth for them to sell.

materials and furniture: The space is entirely made up of recycled material sketchbooks that are custom made. They stand up as open books with the pages making the displays that mimick the designer at hand. On top of the custom paper of the large sketchbooks are patterned wallpapers that also reflect the designers style. Most materials are sustainable and reusable since the space is not permanent, with a very neutral color way. Furniture is also mostly custom besides the design area chairs and desks.

EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE
The concept of the mobile blood bank was derived from a tube of blood drawn. The exterior and interior design show how the blood is placed in a tube with the blood on bottom, WBC and platelets in the middle, and the plasma on top. The outside is very bright with the same colors neutralized on the interior. This bus is used to move from location to location offering people to have the cability to donate blood and save other lives.

The design of the addition to the Midwife Center of Pittsburgh evolved from the concept of the daylilly. The daylilly symbolizes motherhood which is why it was chosen. The floor plan mimicks “sprouting” and growth which refers to the daylilly and motherhood itself. With the floor plan being the shape that it is, it offers to bring the outdoors into a pleasant stay and welcoming environment to the midwife center with extra sunlight and green space to enjoy.

materials and furniture: With the concept of the daylilly, a fall color scheme was chosen due to a different season of its blooming, similiar to when a child is born, it is a new beginning. Materials of the birthing suites are oranges, greens, and reds providing a relaxing atmosphere for a mother to embrace the welcoming of her new child. In the employee suite, grays and purples are used for a cool and calming space for the midwifes to stay and interact during down time.

concept and design: Rockbridge Research focuses on sustainability and treasures a healthy environment, they would like to use an old building of the Pittsburgh area with an adaptive reuse tactic. The company feels strongly about renovating once used buildings as to constructing an entirely new facility. Sustainability will be a key role in the new Rockbridge Research office and will incorporate a comforting environment while consuming safe and natural materials, finishes, and other design aspects. Also, the firm will offer innovative technologies methods that are practiced in their New York location. The firm prefers to have a cultural atmosphere to reflect their base office and the metro area surrounding it. Japanese culture is included into their new office considering that Japan is one of the world’s leading nations of technological and innovative capabilities and San Francisco also has a variety of Oriental ethnicities and cultures. This is how the concept of Zen design was aspired.

materials and furniture: Materials used in Rockbridge Research were strategically chosen to represent nature and its value to a person. Neutral and earth colors are chosen while incorporating many plants and water effects to bring nature in as many ways as possible. Just like zen design, furniture chosen is very clean lined and easy on the eye to really give the client a way to focus on natural design elements that the building can offer.

The concept for the Marriot corporate office is derived from the layout of the historical squares and parks of Savannah since they are the most important and unique part of the city that makes Savannah so special and unique. Looking at an aerial view, the squares evolve a pattern of interlocking grids making circulation and repetition throughout the entire down town area. With this being said, modular design and features will be incorporated into the design of the future corporate office.
