Appendix 1: Edges

Due to the lack of existing sidewalks on the site edge, and the small sidewalks of the surrounding context (See Figure 3.6, Chapter 3), wider sidewalks were added to the site’s perimeter to adhere to Jane Jacob’s principles. By widening the sidewalk, it will allow more people to use them, adding movement and more eyes on the street.

By photoshopping the edges of the building onto the street edges, the surrounding context can be seen in relation to the newly proposed building.

Benches and planter boxes were placed along the site’s newly proposed sidewalk to act as a threshold and allow a clear distinction between the site and the street edges. The planter boxes, trees, awnings and balconies of the proposed retirement community helps to bring down the scale of the building to the human scale on the sidewalks.
