Also speaking at the workshop, Anntoneo Haughton, senior athlete at Racers Track Club said, “The workshop was very informative, particularly the section about the Therapeutic Use Exemption. I think that a lot of athletes did not have this information at their disposal, but now it is very accessible and the workshop was a great experience. The speakers were very informative. They spoke about visiting schools and all the workshops that they host on a yearly basis. These initiatives are basically keeping all athletes and coaches informed and helping to keep sport clean.” Cheryl Reid-Skeen, athlete support personnel said, “The workshop was very good, it educated and informed everyone. The panel discussion was very informative,
it gave information about the health consequences of doping. JADCO is doing a great job, the workshops are educating people about the different types of prohibited substances and this helps to keep sport clean.” Several senior athletes and their support personnel including members of sporting associations and federations, professional groups, coaches and sport administrators supported the event which was held as part of JADCO’s 10th Anniversary celebration. JADCO celebrated this milestone on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 by hosting a Decennial Gala at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel in Kingston.

jadco’s nutrition corner
Dr. Christine Fray-Aiken,
Sports Nutritionist and co-author of the JADCO Nutrition Guide for Jamaican Athletes
1. Why do athletes need to pay attention to what they eat during 2019? For athletes, the shape they are in can affect their livelihood. Although there are rest periods, for example during off-season, it is important that there is a level of self-control in eating. That way, they do not lose the fitness that they have worked hard for during the previous year. As athletes get older it becomes easier to gain weight. So it is important that they get nutritional reassessment if they notice some weight gain or if they are finding it difficult to lose weight they may have gained.
2. How would you recommend that professional athletes eat during 2019 to maintain optimal athletic performance? All professional athletes know the importance of proper nutrient timing. They have to remember to follow their regular eating schedule and stick to their nutrition plan. Athletes must have adequate food and fluid before training and must allow enough time for digestion. You should not be training with a full stomach as it may make you uncomfortable and may affect your performance.
8
3. Can you give us examples of healthy meals that athletes can prepare during 2019? Breakfast Athletes can consider porridge for example corn meal, oats, banana, etc. with low fat milk/soy milk or any milk of his or her choice. Sandwiches can be made from sardines/tuna/chicken with whole wheat bread and vegetables. Lunch Soup can be considered with ground provisions and meat such as chicken or beef. If you are a light eater, you can choose to eat a sandwich. If you prefer a heavier meal, you can choose meat or poultry for example baked chicken with rice and peas or ground provisions for example yam, bananas or potatoes with vegetables. Dinner Dinner choices can be similar to the lunch suggestions depending on your training schedule and whether you prefer to eat heavier or lighter. Snack An athlete may need snacks in between meals, especially on training days. Therefore, you may decide to add yogurt or crackers to your meal schedule. In addition, fruits should be eaten throughout the day. Fruits are very good choices for snacking on to ensure that you get your vitamins and minerals. Athletes should remember to keep hydrated and water is an excellent choice. 4. What are some of the foods that athletes should avoid during 2019 and why? As best as possible, athletes should avoid: • High fat foods for example fried foods and gravy ➤➤ These foods are high in calories and therefore make weight gain easy • High sugar foods e.g. cakes, ice cream and drinks ➤➤ These foods are high in calories and therefore make weight gain easy
• Alcohol ➤➤ Can result in dehydration and muscle cramping ➤➤ Can delay recovery of the body after exercise by making carbohydrate repletion and muscle repair more difficult to occur • Energy drinks ➤➤ May have a lot of unknown ingredients 5. What role does water play in an athlete’s diet and how important is it for athletes to top up on water during 2019? If an athlete does not consume enough water, then dehydration can occur. Dehydration can lead to early fatigue, increased sensitivity to heat and decreased performance. Athletes need to be adequately hydrated because it enhances their athletic performance. It is best to be properly hydrated before, during and after exercise. For the athlete to be adequately hydrated before exercise, he/she needs to be drinking water throughout the day and within an hour before exercise. The athlete will be sweating during exercise and therefore needs to drink during exercise. After exercise, the athlete must rehydrate. 6. What would you say to encourage athletes to stay fit and healthy during 2019 and beyond? You have chosen a career in sport. This means that your body is your professional instrument. Keep your goals in mind and remember that nutrition works hand in hand with the training from your coach. Our Jamaican foods can go a far way in providing good nutrition. Make sure that you have adequate carbohydrate in your diet. You can find this in ground provisions for example yam, bananas, breadfruit, potatoes, etc. Your protein sources for example meat, poultry, and fish should not be fried. If however, you choose to eat foods that are fried, please avoid consuming gravy and avoid fried foods for as long as you can. If you are vegetarian, the preparation of vegetarian “meats” should be done with very little fat as well. Make fruits and vegetables a part of your daily diet. These are your sources of vitamins and minerals. Keep hydrated and make it a habit to drink water throughout the day.
