THE MAKING OF ANCIENT CHINESE JADE Date: Nov. 2017 Resolution: 1280x720 Duration: 02 m 00 s Format: mov Tools: Photoshop, After Effects Directed by: Chieh Cheng Narrated by: Han Yang Music: Phil's Album-Quirky Toymaker Video link: https://vimeo.com/242014564 My father has collected ancient Chinese jade for almost 20 years. He always explains how precious these stones are by describing how difficult they were to be crafted. However, his friends often fail to fathom it completely. I wanted to provide more interesting and engaging context by using motion graphics. The

background is set at Stone Age which people cannot use metal tools to craft jade because I planned to demonstrator how creative the ancients were under such limitation. First, I explained why jade is so special in the Chinese culture through the evolution of Chinese character of the word “jade” from present time tracing back to the past. Then I brought out another key point of jade crafting, hardness. To show this feature, the jade stone was transformed into a fist and broke many stone plates. The scene of quartz sand was created to introduce the steps of jade crafting. Based on the information I found in books and the internet, there are roughly 5 steps for jade making: picking raw materials, cutting open materials, boring holes, carving and engraving patterns and polishing. After steps were displayed, the final scene went back to “cong”, a typical form of jade artifacts in the Neolithic Period.

HAN AND JADE -WEDDING VIDEO Date: Dec. 2017 Resolution: 1280x720 Duration: 01 m 59 s Format: mov Tools: PaintTool SAI, Photoshop, After Effects Directed by: Chieh Cheng Narrated by: Han Yang and Chieh Cheng Music: https://www.bensound.com Video link: https://vimeo.com/246612097 In mid-2016, I used a template to make a short video to be played at my wedding banquet. The video includes several CG paintings I created based on the memorable moments in the lives of my husband and I.

I tried a variety of painting styles to match the topics of the scenes. For example, I used sketch style to highlight the cozy and relaxed atmosphere when we at the coffee house and applied wooden texture to the scene of observing insects to emphasize the natural environment. After learning After Effects in 2017, I remade the video by adding a warm opening, a sweet ending and a voice-over. Moreover, I broke every CG paintings into layers and rearranged the position of each layer. I also applied camera moves so as to turn these still images into motion. The purpose of remaking the video is to tell the same story more vividly. Through the motion I designed for CG paintings, I want the viewers to feel as if I am laying out my memories in front of them.

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION VIDEO Date: Jan. 2018 Resolution: 1280x720 Duration: 02 m 00 s Format: mov Tools: Whiteboard, markers, eraser, camera, tripod, Final Cut Pro Directed by: Chieh Cheng Music: https://www.bensound.com Video link: https://vimeo.com/252142905 One of the fascinating elements which can be controlled to make the video more interesting is the “time”. When the video is speeded up or slowed down, the details or the whole picture of the content will be amplified to give audiences different viewing experiences. This concept is applied to my

personal introduction video. I made this video by drawing the story about myself on a whiteboard. I used only black and red markers to emphasize the contrast of scenes and make images clear enough to view. The drawing order was particularly designed so that viewers will not know the subjects of every scene until the drawing is completed. Moreover, in some scenes, I used an eraser to erase a part of the drawing so as to present more information and raise viewers’ curiosity. Lastly, I increased the speed rate of the video so the drawing process becomes another intriguing element. The drawings look like plants growing from the tip of the markers under the fast speed which gives audiences a vivid impression.

JOVIAL PUBLISHING COMPANY IDENTITY SYSTEM Date: Dec. 2017 Tools: Chinese brush and ink, watercolors, water-soluble wax pastels, Illustrator, Photoshop Typeface: Avenir, DFMing Objective: Jovial is a newly found publisher. Designing a logo and a brand identity to suit their business. Company’s target audience: People aged 30 and above who are interested in history, literature and social science. Jovial’s mission is to provide readers with in-depth reading contents and novel reading experiences.

abbreviation of a Chinese idiom 耳目一新, which means “to find everything fresh and new”. 目 denotes eye, 新 pronounced similar to 心(heart) and hands(手) symbols that the company handles publications professionally. Together I combined these symbols into a sailing ship to signify the company’s willingness to embrace new publishing concepts and challenges in the future. Furthermore, 目新 sounds similar to Jupiter in Mandarin. The planet is one the brighter stars in the night sky and also called Fu star(Fu signifies prosperity) in the Chinese culture. Hence, I chose Cunfa, a Chinese painting technique using light ink strokes to express the textures, to mimic the surface of Jupiter. Cunfa also offers a wooden texture to the painting, which gives audiences feelings of warmth and vitality. Finally, I developed the company’s identity system with the logo and painting.

Lightly added colors and made them complement with the ink. There is a special wooden texture in the completed painting.

CD COVER AND CASE DESIGN FOR DECCA CLASSICS Date: Nov. 2017 Tools: Illustrator, Photoshop Typeface: Mr Eaves XL San Nar OT Objective: Decca Classics plans to release a collection of Romantic music. The collection includes masterpieces of Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Debussy. Designing covers and cases for each composer. Target audience: People aged 20 to 40 who are not familiar with classical music but want to purchase their first set.

12

Usually, classical albums are designed to suit the needs of classical music lovers, therefore, performers and composers are often displayed on the CD covers. However, it can be seen as barriers to the people (especially young adults) who do

not know much about the classical music. To solve this problem, I unified the themes into music notes to symbolize distinct music styles of composers. In addition, I set four saturated color tones and chose a rose, a flame, an umbrella, and a paintbrush to visualize the feelings audiences will have when listening to the works of different composers. For CD covers, I reduced the size of musical notes and turned them into scattering brushes to create the patterns on discs. For booklets, I applied one type of the rest symbols which is long enough to connect each page in booklets. Another meaning is that audiences can find relief for their souls by listening to classical music. People who want to step into the world of classical music are able to receive a preliminary understanding of the music style when they see the design of CD covers and cases.

Pictures of performers and composers are usually used in designing classical music albums. The designs before the 80s are usually matched with the spirit of music.

LOGO AND POSTER DESIGN FOR BOLD TRAVEL AGENCY Date: Jul. 2017 Tools: Illustrator, Photoshop Typeface: Futura Objective: Design a logo for Bold Travel Agency and a series of posters for their advertisement campaign. Target audience: Tourists aged from 25 to 45 who are adventuresome and want their travel experiences to be unique and memorable. Bold Travel Agency focuses on uncommon destinations for travelers. Targeted clients are people who seek adventures and are not afraid to take a risk on their journey.

14

The company wants to combine their brand and the logo, moreover, the logo should be easily

identified as a travel agency. I combined the symbol of a map pin, a lens, an airplane and the brand name to design the logo. An airplane was placed on the edge of the circle, which symbolizes traveling with Bold helps clients to step out of the comfort zones. Futura was chosen as the typeface to demonstrate a modern and adventurous impression. Ten earthtone colors were used to construct the color plan. These concepts convey the image of the travel agency. Mexico, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are the destinations for the latest travel package. The posters design ideas are explained as follow. Three countries’ representative architects were placed in opened luggages to hint the upcoming surprises offered by the journey. The tones of the posters were set to bring clients the feelings of positivity, warmth, and mystery so that to change the common perceptions of these countries.

POSTER DESIGN FOR TAIWAN TOURISM BUREAU Date: Nov. 2017 Tools: Illustrator, Photoshop Typeface: Avenir Objective: Design a series of posters represent different features around Taiwan. The theme of the posters is “the impression of Taiwan. Special requirement: Photos are not allowed to be used in the posters. Target audience: Tourists who aged from 35 to 65 and interested in natural environment and humanities.

16

To meet the requirement of not using photos, I created a variety of shapes filled with varied colors to capture the landscapes from the north, south, east and west of Taiwan. I also applied grain effects

to the shapes in order to give the posters some blur and vintage looks. These techniques create an effect that is similar to recalling memories, which suits the theme. I chose four featured landscapes, the northern coast, the tea plantation, Taroko Gorge and the salt ponds, to represent the north, west, east and south side of Taiwan. Moreover, the sceneries from these places are suitable to be transformed into lines and colored shapes, so that the posters can display the concept of impressions perfectly. The times in each poster is distinct. In the tea plantation poster, the time is set in the afternoon, at dawn in the northern coast poster, at noon in the salt ponds poster, and at the early morning in the Taroko Gorge poster. The purpose is to tell tourists that the sceneries in Taiwan are diverse even within one single day, so it is worthy to visit and explore its beauty.

POWER OFF, DESIGN ON APC ILLUSTRATION DESIGN COMPETITION

Objective: Schneider Electric held a competition to illustrate the feelings of the moment when designers encounter power outage and lose all the unsaved works.

the feelings at the moment of a power outage. The reason is that people rely on electricity to do everything. Without electricity, people are incapable to live a modern life. Furthermore, the situation is even worse if it was a designer, who came across this situation. Completed works without being saved is the worst nightmare. Hence, I illustrated a person whose blood, brain and heart are taken away by a power-off computer. Without his blood, brain, and heart, that person turns into a zombie that holds a power cord with his tears.

One of the most featured products of Schneider Electric is Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system, which brings out the theme of the competition.

I used red and green power switch symbols and each points toward different directions to represent on and off of power. There is a light shining outside of the frame, which suggests that there is always hopes if designers use a UPS system.

Date: Jul. 2017 Tools: Illustrator Typeface: VAGRounded-Bold
