Final Outcome Ideas

Realising that alot of photography is about your inner self and your own feeling which reflect in your work, i decided to take a series of photographs which shows some ones feelings and emotions, i thought about making a storyboard of the different feelings and emotions. After some thought i started to think about possibly intergrating a manifesto with these photographs, perhaps re-take the photos with the person holding a piece of paper displaying manifesto points for authenticity within photography. Here are some points of which i came up with for the manifesto: 1.Your mistakes and errors are creative 2. Find your feelings and emotions 3. Less is more 4. Look right in front of you 5. Be patient 6. Follow your own vision 7. See and dont just look 8. Forget technique 9. Your camera doent matter 10. There are no rules 11. Practise be patient

Ideas And Developments

These are a few experiments i did using a photography app that i purchased. I tried to pay particular attention to lighting, compositon and detail. I really like the top right image i had taken lying down on the floor. Coinsidently thinking about where to start looking for inspiration, lying on my bedroom floor i thought where do i start exactly? staring at the light from below i began to see what was just right in front of me. Shadows, rays of light, patterns with an object! what i was looking for was right in front of me.

Authenticity (Nominal and Expressve)

I managed to contact a student at London Metropolitian University and although he was unable to answer all my questions he did share a little of his thoughts to me on photography. He said: “Photography allows me to capture a moment, memory and emotion which in some cases can be more effective than other methods of visual communication, because it allows us to place ourselves in the scene and we are able to relate and break down the scenario how we see it according to the subject” I asked him outside university what purposes does his photography serve? He said: “Its purpose would be non other than to reflect feelings and emotions, while still remaining pleasing to the eye for its viewers”

Your Title Here... Packaging

Design Problem Many of us get carried away by what we eat, simply because we know it tastes good and by placing these irresistible treats at the front of supermarkets there is not much stopping us from resisting picking one up, we simply cant help ourselves. Maybe if people knew the real consequences it would encourage us to just simply say “No.

An Idea

Raise more awareness to people what it is they are consuming to discourage people from unnecessary unhealthy snacking How: Incorporate visual imagery, persuasive text onto the packaging Manipulating/changing the brands slogans My intention is to raise awareness of what people are consuming through packaging, the effect is to make people think twice about what it is they are about to eat, wether it be through subliminal colours used on the packaging or persuasive text. To give people back the will power to say no to un-nutritional food. Packaging Companys do not value the care and health needs of its consumer but only consider the selling point of product and to do all means nessisary for the product to have a high selling point

Research

Fat Pig is a chocolate company which i came across that create organic milk chocolate with extremely eye-cathing packaging, name and content. Using a clever inventive way of promoting and advertising their product, but at the same time raising awarenss. Whilst other chocolate companies use words and phrases which entice you to buy a chocolae bar, like the kit kat common phrase “Take a break, have a kit kat, Fat pig does exactly the opposite. On the back of the chocolate bar are words that doesnt inspire you to eat the chocolate, phrased in a way to almost put you off eating it. The pretty pink packaging and neat design almost makes the product appear to be innocent until you turn over the chocolate and read it. on the front of the chocolate is a pigs snout, simplistic minimalistic imagery to sit with the whole content of the chocolate. I think this is a very creative and inventive way of raising awareness but in a fun humorous way, its about time that consumers are faced with reality of products rather than illushion waffle just so the company can get more sales. I dont think this product would discourage people to not eat chocolate all together because it purposely uses fun and humour, but i do think it would raise slight awareness to people when eating it and the next time if they decide to pick up and eat another different chocolate bar. A rememorable chocolate experience

Department store packaging gave me more an insight to the creative side of packaging, where the box offers a lot more than the actual product. I decided to visit john lewis to get a perspective on the diffrent types of packaging, to see how companys constructed information and visual together to commuincate to its consumer. I soon discovered that the most obvious thing to attract buyers is the products appearance and the information displayed would contain nothing other than ingredients used or its contents and the brand name of the product.

I came across these chocolates in store, and thought they were so interesting that i bought them and thought it was a very good way to communicate to buyers. The chocolates had funny humourous picture illustration and text which was situated underneath each picture. I thought about the idea of having text on a product which contained humour would encourage buyers to actually pick up the product and read it and follow any written instructions given.

From the idea taken from fat pig chocolate, i decided to use the same concept and apply it to darling spuds packet of crisps, the natural neutral colours that are used in the packaging, showing us they use natural ingredients ie.. sea salt, balsamic vinegar and stating they are hand cooked make consumers believe they are healthy compared to other crisps, when in actual fact they are just as bad. So on the white packet i decided to redesign its packaging image

Final Outcome

My final pieces containing funny and rude meaasages, encouraging consumers to make the right choices and eat less by giving them some sort of guidance of how much of a treat they can have, without over doing it. How many of us are faced with a massive pack of chocolate buttons? we know we shouldnt, but we do it anyways, yes, thats what happens, the whole packs gone, nobody to stop you or to say youve had enough, but with this method you can.

This is another example of one of my final pieces, following the same concept as the previous other ones but on the back there will be a little handy tip in order to either discourage you to not eat it at all, or if you do decide to have a munch, it tells you what you need to do in order to burn of the added calories.

Design Investigation & Work Based Learning Photography

Photography is a form of visual communication, ever wondered where that phrase comes from, a picture speaks a thousand work. For my design investigation i have chosen to research into the field of photography as it is something iam particularly interested in and wish to learn more about. I find the use of analog and authenicity photography really interesting, and have noticed this style has become more poplular and increasing in todays society. Once upon a time we could not wait for the latest sharper, more faster taking cameras to come out, but now it appears everybody is reverting back to authenicity, but why?

Questions to ask

To learn abit more about this field and what it takes in order to be a good photographer i set a list of questions which i will ask photographers, including successful photographers and students. The questions i will be asking is: 1. What interests you about photography? 2. What inspires you when it comes to photography and how do you go about finding inspiration? 3. What skills do you think it takes in orderto become a good photographer? 4. Do you use computer technology to alter your work and if so in what way? 5. What do you think about authenticity within photography? 6. Why does authenticity photography appeal to you?

?

Authenticity (Nominal and Expressve)

Researching into authenicity, i found out that it carries alot of meaning rather than just one in particular. An authentic photography may mean how much of it conforms to the photographers intention, it could mean how much expression and moral passion has gone into the work, or it could mean taking a photography which would be impossible to re-capture again

Industry Contact Report

For my design investigation on photography I managed to contact a student at the London Metropolitan University who studies Graphic Design. I decided to contact him because his style of working almost always consists of photography and he always uses briefs as a opportunity to use photography. I find his work very inspiring and like his style of work, he uses loads of different techniques and media for his photography including using a cannon SLR camera, pinhole cameras, and even photography downloadable apps. Although he was unable to answer all my questions he did share a few of his thoughts with me on photography, he said “Photography allows me to capture a moment, memory and emotion which in some cases can be more effective than other methods of visual communication because it allows us to place ourselves in the scene and we are able to relate and break down the scenario how we see it according to the subject”. From this it came clear to me that he uses photography as a way of expressing himself a more effective way of communication by using visual. By using photography to capture a memory or moment this enables the viewer to perceive the message by any means they wish. And by taking photography of something that we can all relate to we can then break down the different meanings within the picture. I asked him as a amateur photographer how do you go about finding your feet and setting out into this field of art. He said: “You just need to identify with your surroundings, to see what’s around you and not just look, its kind of difficult to explain and takes some practise, try to focus on lighting, lines and different compositions. After sharing this piece of advice with me I did start of observe my surrounding and soon started to see and relate to what it was he was trying to explain about finding inspiration. I noticed that lighting in a photograph played a huge role whether it be authenticity or not. The way that light would reflect of or on particular object or light rays through and between objects I found really interesting and would make photographs very dynamic. The little tips he did share with me I found very useful because it helped me to widen my eyes and look more further beyond than what is just in front of me. It has helped me to understand that not necessarily that there has to be a subject in a photography but just paying particular interest in lines, light and composition can be more than enough to create an interesting photograph. Another thing that I learnt too is that you don’t have to have the latest camera about in order to shoot photos, the real rustic and authentic photographs would most probably benefit more by using a pinhole camera of some sort or even the kind of cameras that were about before digital ones, the disposable ones. These types of cameras produce unwanted effects which before time we wouldn’t of liked but today it has become a part of creativity and more and more people use this style when it comes to their own work. It could be that this style fits in with peoples photography and style of working when it comes to expressing your feelings and emotions, a sort of dream like trance effect, this effect could help us to identify with the picture more and relate to it. Through this research I have found out what is required in regards to finding inspiration, and also how to go about shooting my own photographs.

Design Investigation Manifesto aftefact

From my idea, i started thinking about what way i could inergrate my manifesto points onto my photograph. From the student i interviewed. I was inspired by his piece of work where he used overlaying text on top of a photograph, so i decided to experiment using this same process and it worked quite well, the background images emphazing the text. In order to make the images appear more rustic, i decided to print the photos then take a picture of that print out and repeated this 3 times, producing a more rough and authentic look.

Becomming... Christian Marclay

After exploring christian marclays practise, i decided to brain storm some possible routes which i could explore in more depth. i was particularly interested in christian marclays idea of cut up, to assemble and to create something new, but not just with music but with other elements.

Research

I decided to look into william burrough, barbara kruger and other sources focusing on music. All these things consist of mash up of different medias using different processes, i looked into william burrough or his audio and visual cut ups, barbara kruger for her cut ups which consisted of cut of images and overlaying text to create collages, and i also looked into cut ups which purely focused on audio, cut up of sounds produced by everyday sounds and also sounds just simply using the human voice.

My Visit To RoundHouse

I went to watch a show starring alvo noto, i thought it would be interesting to go and watch as his work consists of audio and visual. The visual and audio both complimenting eachother to create a awsome atmosphere. although this work does not consist of mash up but it follows rules of that his work is carefully thought about when it comes to allignment and sync of the visual and the sound, pretty much to how christian marclay think about the careful compostion of sounds he is cutting up and replacing back together

Experiments inspired by kruger

I created these collages using bits of newspaper magazine cut outs, pastels and crayons. i wanted to experiment using a simular technique to that or krugers, using random bits of magazines to create new faces and characters. Rearranging and remixing media to create something new.

Final artefact outcome

For my final outcome i decided to recored two people i know rapping about two opposite topics, i thought by doing this i could merge the two together and almost create a new rap of some sort. cutting up and blending the two video sources to create something new

Making the invisible visible Kinetic Typography

listening to bbc radio5 i found a clip which i was going to animate, the topic was about governments plans in changing the retirement age. I started out by sketching out some possible ideas of how i could go about doing this. After some thought and advice i realise that the information in the speech was very dense and would be quite a challenge to animate.

Storyboards

I started by sketching out storyboards to detrime how they would look, i though about using scratchy effect text to replicate the fuzzy banter of the voices, overlaying text where one person would talk over another person and also the moving transitions of frame to relate the the topic of the conversation. After some feedback i was told this would be quite challenage to animate and trying to include all its context, so then i decided to look for another clip more specific in its topic and decided to use that.

Inspiration

i came across these two images during my design investigation breif on photography and thought they were both quite interesting. i thought that i could use props in my animation according to what the subject was about. i also really like the top images use of scrabble letters and thought i could use the pieces to animate text in my animation.

Experiements

I collected and gathered a series of sounds from household objects. Since marclays sounds were unintended ie, smashing and breaking noise, scratches pops and clicks noises that we dont want, i decided to recored noises that we dont want to hear, like the ringing of an alarm clock, dripping of a tap or fuzzy radio out of tune. Instead of playing these sounds in a random compostion i decided to make a story out of the noises. The outcome was quite successful. I also decied to experiment using folding techniques to produce objects from a single sheet of paper, the idea of taking an element, mash it up to create something new.

Props

I started looking around for possible props that i could use in my animation. i thought about using beauty products from my dressing table or even possible animate on my dressing table, seen as the subject is about beauty. I thought about possibly animating on my beauty card chain for work, or on a salon beauty leaflet.

Chosen Props

In the end i decided on using a magazine as it has alot of information and pictures to do with beauty, i managed to get hold of some scrabble pieces and would use these to animate my script onto the magazine

Final Piece Using stop frame animation i look pictures of the scrabble pieces onto the magazine, in the middle part where a second person laughs i tryed to display this by not using text but my animating the magazine as if the magazine is chuckling itself. When the work turn comes in i also displayed this by having animated a page turning onto another with the animation still continuing.
