Many hospitals include nappies, onesies, and blankets so check with your hospital before packing your bag. * Newborn Nappies, wipes, blankets (if not supplied by the hospital) *

Of course, the easiest thing to do is to head to Milk and Love where we’ve scoured Australia to find beautiful eco-friendly products for pregnancy, breastfeeding and baby. You can simply browse our Hospital Bag category for all the beautiful essentials you need. Everyone can contribute to the discussion on the day, if they wish. We cover topics such as Breastmilk Supply, Breast and Nipple Care, Coping with a Toddler and New Baby. Everyone is welcome at our meetings, and you can come along before you have your baby and you will find you will build a supportive network of other mothers who will encourage you in your breastfeeding after your baby is born.

6 REASONS WHY

MATERNITY PORTRAITS ARE FOR YOU As women, we have an incredible gift of bringing life – a whole new human – into the world. We are more important than we give ourselves credit for. Our journey through pregnancy is special, and should be remembered.

Here are six reasons why you should consider pregnancy photos for yourself:

1

. The third trimester is tough. It's good to have something to look forward to while your belly grows.

2

. You and your body are working hard to grow and nurture your unborn baby. Celebrate this journey!

3

. Your everything is sore, tired and exhausted and you definitely deserve some quiet time to just relax,

and have fun without exhausting yourself any further.

4

. It's a fact. You're going to feel like a lump of bumps and wobbly bits. Don't underestimate what a

maternity photography session can do for your self-esteem and confidence in those final weeks.

5

. Through the uncomfortable, sleepless nights, the inability to put on shoes or maintain your lady bits,

you'll likely forget about how amazing you are, and you'll forget how beautiful pregnancy is.

6

. Plus, you get to show off your beautiful baby bump to your friends with incredible, stunning portraits

instead of a selfie in the bathroom mirror.

These memories are important, and so are you. Finding your 'tribe' once you become a mother - or if you move to a new area - is so important! When we moved to the Gold Coast in late

2010

we had a small network

of family and friends so I had to 'put myself out there' by attending play groups/ mother's groups to meet other parents.

MAKING MUM FRIENDSÂ Â

Thankfully we now have a large network and I love helping others make connections after discovering many families in similar situations. The weekly mother's group/ baby weigh-in/parent information session at the Child Health Clinics around the Coast are free - and a great place to join a mother's group when bub is under

12

months.

Check out the Robina Child Health Clinic, Nerang North Early Years Centre, and Studio Village Community Centre and others. Gold Coast Council's Active and Healthy Program has a variety of free or low-cost activities for parents to attend with - and without their little ones. There's Stroller Group, crafternoons, play dates, Zumba, yoga and more.

ON THE GOLD COAST

The local libraries also hold Baby Rhyme Time mornings and Toddler mornings - so check your local library's timetable. The various private Facebook groups are great. There are groups all over the Gold Coast who interact online/ arrange regular play dates and/or social outings for parents (eg BBQ and cricket in the park with the whole family so Dads can get to know other Dads too). Various churches, such as New Life Robina, host fab play groups and, for those with twins+ there's the Gold Coast Multiple Birth Association. Most importantly, don't be shy to ask for a new acquaintance's number or Facebook info so you can connect and catch up for play dates. It's

good for the soul to get out and about, let the kids enjoy different surroundings, and have a chat with a fellow parent to share the highs and lows.

PRIVATE CONTINUITY OF MIDWIFERY CARE Do you know that Private midwifery care is not just for home birth?

Women of the Gold Coast can now employ their own Private Midwife who can care for them throughout their pregnancy, their labour and birth at Gold Coast University Hospital and then for up to seven weeks post birth.

This means that women of all risks can now access the benefits of continuity of care.

Research continues to demonstrate that continuity of care from a midwife for pregnancy, birth and post birth, gives the best possible birthing outcomes.

This includes the: - Lowest caesarean section rates. - Lowest intervention rates. - Highest breast-feeding rates. - Highest women satisfaction rates. - Lowest postnatal depression rates.

Until recently, only low risk women could access this "Gold Standard" of care through either independent midwifery care at home or through the few spaces available in the birth centre model of care.

Now, all pregnant women on the Gold Coast have the option of high quality private continuity of midwifery care.

There is no need to see a GP, women can self refer to a private midwife where pregnancy can be confirmed and any necessary blood tests, scan or referrals can be arranged.

To discuss your options further call My Own Midwife GC on

As a pelvic floor physiotherapist, I often have women saying to me, 'but it’s normal to leak a little urine when you are coughing or sneezing, right? ' Wrong. But what about when you are pregnant? No. What about when your bladder is really really full? No. It’s not normal. Not ever.

We need to make a distinction here, there is normal, and then there is common. It is COMMON to leak urine when you are coughing or sneezing,

HOW TO STOP LEAKING

WHEN COUGHING & SNEEZING

but that does not make it NORMAL.

Let me give you a quick fix for this. A research study by Miller et al in

2008

, found that if they

taught people to pull up their pelvic floor when they are coughing or sneezing, they IMMEDIATELY were able to significantly decrease the amount of leaking that they experienced.

This is because when you cough or sneeze, or lift something heavy, there is an increase in the amount of abdominal muscle pressure created, which pushes down on your pelvic floor, and makes it harder for you to maintain the closing pressure around your urethra (where your wee comes out).

A pelvic floor contraction should actually come on automatically when you cough or sneeze to ensure you don’t leak. However, if you are leaking, it might not be occurring, so if you do it consciously, you might just find that you can stop those leaks from getting out.

Sounds simple, right? It is.
