The emergent development and urban expansion exert tremendous focus on human beings, causing society's deformation coupled with multiple issues. The increasing vulnerable groups become victims who are suffering unequal treatment. On the other hand, as a combination of multiple layered resources, society also carries many pressure and potential crises. After majoring in Landscape Architecture, I believe landscape, as a medium of time and space, can embrace the complex flux of interwoven systems, including philosophy, politics, and historical context, to solve issues. It's also my responsibility to narrow the gap between different groups by establishing a reasonable landscape strategy and re-focusing on the vulnerable group. More responsive landscape systems should be considered to provide equal access for each individual and alleviate social vulnerability. The intervention of the landscape provides more space for the natural society and reconstructs the opportunity for people to reconnect with nature.
Many living systems stay idle or malfunction due to the rapid development of society. Individuals who fail to meet their basic demands under multiple aspects are particularly vulnerable to various influences and cannot resist. How to restore a balanced relationship for vulnerable groups of people is one of my concerns. In 2018, I was involved in a voluntary educational program. During the process, I interviewed left-behind children and the elderly in rural areas. While the prosperity of social development created enormous opportunities, it has provided little utility to this vulnerable social group. In addition to the left-behind people, many homeless groups are also vulnerable groups directly affected by social development. Thus, in my project 《Reverse Engineering》,I saw this as an opportunity to design a responsive system by providing a sustainable new wonderland in the Bay Area to provide the vulnerable group equal access and meet their primary demand.
On the other hand, many political behaviors in human history have caused many innocent families to be broken and displaced. The racial discrimination and social vulnerability caused by political issues should not be forgotten. In the summer of 2017, I visited the Vietnam War Memorial designed by Maya-lin. I can deeply feel the pain of the war from the landscape she designed, which reconnects the fragile past with the bright future. Landscape and cultural ideas are often inseparable. A perfect landscape can make people empathetic regardless of cold, logical design, focusing more on the site's historical identity. Thus, in my project 《The Tear》, I would like to use design strategies that make a combination of intuition and perceptual experience, and through the concept of "trace" (Christopher Kenotte) to construct some spaces that can resonate with people's emotions, reveal the history, and warn the future people.
In a nutshell, I believe a good designer is a pioneer who could bravely charge into the ultra-dankness, genuinely understand the demand of various vulnerable groups in society, and give them equal access and respect through sustainable design strategies. Thus, I have researched several types of social and ecological vulnerability in my design. I want to analyze their living situations and primary demand to become a part of the expanded society, alleviate the pressure of social development, and serve as a warning to society and future generations. After finishing my bachelor's degree,I wish to build my ecological treatment system and a visual vocabulary of landscape design. The University of Edinburgh has rigorous academic training and rich experience landscape architecture, art and design, ecology, architecture, or others.Students can learn pioneering technology and careful design thinking. I am very eager to have the opportunity to study scientific and comprehensive methods to provide me with design theories and technologies that can change the phenomenon of social vulnerability. I believe that the University of Edinburgh will accelerate my growth and help me achieve my future aspirations. I, therefore, await your careful consideration of my applications for admission.
