Just imagine T
his is a special year for Castle as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. The achievement is remarkable considering the competitive intensity of the industry. In preparing for our year-long 50th anniversary celebration, we reflected back on a number of competing business models that have come and gone. The list gets increasingly longer as the industry continues to evolve. To have successfully operated for five decades, Castle Dealers have defied the odds many times in maintaining their industry position in their markets. These competitive pressures have resulted in Castle becoming stronger today than at any point in our past. Castle Dealers have continued to innovate and raise the level of service in the businesses they are focused on in each market they serve. I am continually impressed with the service level our Castle Dealers provide in their markets. It reflects a common goal and tremendous respect for a business model that, in many cases, has supported their businesses for generations. However, our success would not be possible

without the outstanding support of our supplier network, many of whom have participated and been a part of Ideas since its launch in the Fall of 2007. Like the Castle organization, Ideas has continued to evolve and this issue marks the first time we have included editorial features — one on deck design and the other on curb appeal — in order to provide that DIY homeowner with a range of new “ideas” now that the long awaited Spring of 2013 is finally here. In terms of curb appeal, Lawrence Cummer writes that “whether you are planning to one day sell your home or just want the pride that comes from a top-notch façade, there is no question that a little curb appeal goes a long way. “Today, sprucing up your home’s frontage has also never been easier. It does not take a major overhaul or high-paid renovators to add an air of distinctiveness and individuality and a few small projects yield impressive results.” I could not agree more. Enjoy Ideas! A DIY Deck Building Primer
D
ecks and patios are not the last frontier for Canadian homeowners, but they certainly appear to be the latest. They run the gamut from a simple rectangle or other common geometric shape to sophisticated outdoor “rooms” where one may find virtual kitchens, fireplaces, built-in hot tubs, energy efficient heaters and all manner of accessories making the space usable for six to nine months of the year. Wayne Henderson, Western Canada account manager for Trex Co. in Langley, B.C., says the line between decks and patios is beginning to blur. “The terms patio and deck are almost becoming the same now. Patios are typically a smaller space, but people still put the same deck materials on a patio. It is just using the space and trying to make it look like it is not just a rectangle.” For example, Henderson says someone building a deck or having it built might avoid straight lines if possible, and someone else might use inlays such as a compass design slab to brighten up a patio and provide a focal point. Of course, there is still one considerable difference between a patio and a deck. The patio is always at ground level and a deck will be above grade, perhaps as high as a second floor bedroom or even a roof. That said, if the materials used are broadly similar then what exactly are they? By far and away lumber remains the material of choice. Randy Pearce, national product manager at CanWel in Edmonton, estimates that wood still accounts for about 75% of the market. At one time spruce and cedar were the timber of choice, says Pearce, but pressure treated lumber with its familiar green hue is everywhere. The reason for the change from spruce and cedar concerns those woods themselves. Even if they were painted or stained
regularly, a tiresome chore in itself, rain and snow finally found their way into every nook and cranny and started to rot the lumber. “It looks lovely the day you install it, but it degrades as the weather hits it,” says Pearce. “If you leave spruce unpainted or untreated it turns grey and black and cedar the same thing.” There may not be a solution for every problem, but in this particular case there was pressure treated lumber. It allowed anything wet to slosh all over everything and still the rot and the insects that would have followed in its wake, was kept at bay. Pressure treated lumber is wood that has been immersed in a preservative and placed in a pressurized tank so the preservative is driven into the entire length of lumber. Until 2004 in Canada, chromated copper arsenate which gave pressure treated lumber its green colour, was used as the preservative, but environmental concerns brought about a new preservative called alkaline copper quat. Although considered better ecologically, ACQ, the new preservative, corrodes iron and aluminum so during construction stainless steel fasteners are advised. Further changes in preservatives also mean that the ubiquitous green of pressure treated lumber is giving way to a more natural looking brown. Beyond its ability to withstand the damage any kind of precipitation can throw at it, there is another reason why pressure treated lumber remains the preferred material. It is that much cheaper than other options, at least initially. CanWel’s Pearce says in his experience composite lumber is three, four or even five times as expensive as solid wood, but when other maintenance costs such as buying paint or stain every couple of years are factored in composite is no more expensive than wood.
Further, say both Henderson and Pearce, composite products are favoured more and more when remodeling a wood outdoor space is on the agenda, with the Trex executive estimating the switch from the traditional material to the contemporary at about 20% of all work done. Composite materials are something of an environmentalist’s dream. Reclaimed wood fibres from hardwoods such as oak are obtained from mills and mixed with almost 100% recycled plastic that comes from freezer bags and other household items. Resin is added to the mix under pressure and what
Your home is your Castle I 9
emerges from an extrusion machine is a tough, weatherproof material. Composite material should not be confused with another product used in outdoor spaces, that made of PVC, although that too is manufactured using recycled material, in this case vinyl. Composite is not entirely maintenancefree, says Henderson, but that is the direction composites are heading in. “Customers are looking for ultra low
maintenance products, and with the Transcends product line we have a product that meets that need,” he says. “People do not want to spend time in their backyard maintaining decks and patios. They want to spend time in their backyard enjoying their life.” That is a theme Pearce picks up. He says CanWel’s composite with Moisture Shield has a lifetime warranty although over time there will be some colour fading. Colour, of course, is a major design 10 I Your home is your Castle
consideration for decks and patios. Trex offers 14 colours, eight of them in its Transcends range, but nothing custom. It is a matter of economies of scale, says Henderson. His most popular composite colour at the moment is the darker brown, twotone Spiced Rum, the company’s closest replication of real wood since it has mineral streaking throughout. This moves the composite away from plastic-looking boards to a more realistic wood style. The two-tone effect also reflects
another design development. Woodgrain and two-tone composites are also very popular with CanWel’s customers, says Pearce. “The trend, when you’re using the colours, is to really accent them,” says Henderson. “Traditionally, you put down a wood deck and you stained it one colour, whether clear or cedar. In today’s market, we are seeing people place the majority of their deck down in one colour, but then accenting it either on the perimeter or with curved designs throughout in
another colour which really allow for it to pop and to separate spaces as well.” Beyond colour, Pearce says talking design in general 10 to 20 years ago a deck would be an 8’-by-10’ affair off the kitchen with railings and some steps down to the yard and it functioned as a landing area more than usable space. Now there are multi-faceted decks with two tiers, a higher level for cooking and a lower level for entertaining, for example. “You have now got full-fledged kitchens outside,” says Pearce.” Before it was a plastic deckchair. Now it is a cushioned loveseat and sectionals. The design is now more upscale. There are no limits to what you can do. “You can have curves, you can have rounds. You can have lighting put into your decks.” For the homeowner who is not entirely sure what he wants in a deck, there is new software on the market that will help him make his choices. Pearce says CanWel is considering stocking the software: it lets the homeowner design a deck then enter a photograph of his house so he or she can see what their creation will look like attached to his home. As for the cost of this new outdoor
sophistication, for some Pearce says price is really no object, with deck packages available in the $50,000 range. That price, a far cry from the $1,000 low-end kits in stores, brings a rush of built-in goodies. Pearce says he has seen full kitchens with sinks, wine fridges and a “massive” barbeque. “People will put in wood burning fireplaces. I have seen gas fireplaces. And of course hot tubs have been around for a long time.” The list is just endless, he adds, with the “big tent” gazebo starting to come into its own. Henderson concurs. He says only budget and the homeowner’s imagination limit what can be built on to a house; and even when money is tight, he finds that some householders are creating their dream outdoor living space in sections: “It becomes an everlasting work in progress.” Surprisingly, all but the fanciest decks and patios do not require specialized machinery or tools to get built. For example, hidden deck fastener systems are now available and if the reasonably handy homeowner does not have the right tools they can be rented. “If it is you or I that is building (a deck), I might go as far as a 24’-by-20’ deck with maybe a tier on it, I could do that. I am handy, but I am
not overly handy,” says Pearce. Handy or not, the homeowner is responsible for signing building permits, even if a contractor has been hired to do the work and it is he who has obtained them. Similarly, there are height limits for decks, usually based on the size of the space available, and other restrictions on what may be built. Decks also cannot be built over an easement or a right of way, nor can they be put up above gas lines, gas or water meters or water shutoff valves. What it means is that before dreams of that long soak in the hot tub or steaks and wine with friends become reality some research is called for, Canada’s latest homeowner frontier or not. Sprucing up the front of a home has never been easier
Curb Appeal Quick
T
he view of your home from the curb leaves a lasting impression so why not make it an outstanding one? Whether you are planning to one day sell your home or just want the pride that comes from a top-notch façade, there is no question that a little curb appeal goes a long way. Today, sprucing up your home’s frontage has also never been easier. It does not take a major overhaul to add an air of distinctiveness and individuality and a few small projects yield impressive results. With that in mind, here are a few ways a do-it-yourselfer can ramp up their home curb and one or two others that, in fairness, will best be handled by a professional contractor:

Colour it up: While many talented
do-it-yourselfers are likely to leave major exterior painting jobs to professional contractors, the front door is a quick and easy project you can take on that at the same time makes the biggest difference, says Alison Goldman, brand manager at CIL Paints. “Paint that big steel front door a vivid colour,” Goldman suggests. “It is the trend
is cleaned. It will not only make your job easier, it will prevent you from having to redo it or worse, watch in frustration as it peels off later. • Use a tri-star fine (TSF) brush and when painting trim around windows or door lites, use a razor-blade to cut off excess and prevent mess instead of tape. • Consider the time of day. It does not take long to finish a simple project such as the painting of a door, but paint dries quickly in the sun. The slower paint dries, the better it cures, and the better it looks. “Check the weather forecast for a less sunny day, and paint from the shadiest spot first.” • Professionals try to stroke or roll paint from dry areas back into wet areas. That way a coat of paint always blends back into itself to create a smoother, more continuous layer. Goldman stresses the importance of being creative. Stencils and paint on a concrete walk, for example, can create a faux finish that gives a feel like Flagstone, but she admits will take longer than the front door project.

right now, and you are seeing more and more people using bold colours on their front doors. It will completely change the personality of the house.” If taking it on as a springtime project, consider coordinating that job with some landscaping. As Goldman puts it: “Imagine a deep orange door, and all the pots and planters and even some of the flowers are a similar colour. It is absolutely spectacular.” Colour choice is of course about expressing your individual personality, but trendy colours for front doors this year, she says, are red, yellow, bright blues and dark plum purples: “When I was growing up in the U.K., my mother always insisted on a yellow front door, because it is very welcoming and cheerful.” There are a few “dos and don’ts” when it comes to your exterior painting project: • Do not paint the front door, the garage door, trim or shutters the same bold colour. “That is an awful lot of the same colour,” Goldman says. Instead, pick a feature element such as the front door, and tie it into another element like planters. • Do consider painting shutters and door frames in the same colour as it will bring elements together. • If painting woodwork, make sure it

those with some carpentry experience, while those with greater do-it-yourself skills or who are willing to bring in professional renovators might consider expanding the frame and adding side- or top-lites around the entryway. Consider swapping door hardware, which will also makes a huge difference, experts say. From simple to elegant, or, again, from gold to silver, the right choice of door knob, handle, hinges and lock can make a huge difference. For a bigger project with a more
Window opportunities:
Windows too do not need to be completely replaced to create a striking new look. New products on the market can help create the look of divided lites, also known as multi-lite windows, but which use a single pane of glass. West recommends SDLs or simulated divided lites, which can give the effect of muntin bars separating and holding together panes of glass. Unlike traditional muntins, which typically are
between ½” and 7/8” wide in residential windows, or internal grilles that sit between panes of glass which are typically 5/8”, SDLs sit on the exterior and can be wider and more noticeable. “This gives it a richer look,” he says. Individually divided panes of glass can also reduce energy efficiency by creating multiple seams and joints for every pane. A completely new front window installed by a professional is a good idea if you are looking for a substantial change. In this case West reminds homeowners to once again consider colour. PVC windows today are available in a wide selection of colours and, of course, will not need painting. Nadiger recommends swapping out a plain “picture window” for a bay window. “It will almost change the entire structure of your house.” If you are fully replacing windows and doors, think of the long-term benefits from selecting more energy-efficient models. The Energy Star logo will help you identify windows and doors that will lose less heat, and also possibly reduce outside noise and prevent condensation. for Eastern Canada at Jeld-Wen of Canada Ltd. “It really can be as simple as changing the glass in the door,” he says. “Kits can be found to add a lite to a door that does not already have one.” Tracy Nadiger, director of marketing at All Weather Windows Ltd. agrees. “Change the pattern of that glass, or perhaps if it has gold inserts, replace them with silver, since that is more fashionable now.” Replacing lites is a simple task for
telling effect, consider replacing the front door. “The front door is the first impression that someone gets of your house,” West says. For a dramatic change he recommends changing from the evercommon steel door to fibreglass that can be pre-stained a colour and does not need painting or the same maintenance. “What we are seeing is the entry door is really becoming a fashion statement,” says Nadiger, who also recommends fibreglass. “People are tending to like a bright red door, for example, or a ‘wood’ door with no lites, but which is actually fibreglass that looks like a wood door.” Both recommend professional installation to make sure the door is perfectly plum and square.

to pay attention to the front of the house as a whole. A welcoming yellow door loses beauty if the paint on the trim, porch or walkway is cracked. Transparent railings will not be as appealing if looking over a nightmarish yard. “Make sure everything is nicely

accounts manager at CanWel Building Materials. “You do not have to pay a mason $40 or so a foot, you can do it yourself for maybe $12 or $15.” Century Aluminum’s Scenic series railings can give you a clear, unobstructed view of your front yard and all your recent handiwork or from the back yard for that matter, and since they are aluminum, they feature low-maintenance demands. “Basically it is like looking through a piece of glass with no top or bottom rail,” says Coleman. He adds that this is an especially desirable feature in a country home: “If you live in the country, like I do, do you want to sit on your porch and look at a rail?” Meanwhile, if you are looking at selling your home, do not overlook the yard, says David Binns, a Torontobased sales representative at Keller Williams Realty. “When people get out of the car, the yard is one of the first things to catch their eyes.” Clean it up, trim the hedges, and put out flowers and plants. If you are not blessed with a green thumb, hire a landscape architect who can for a small fee provide what Binns calls a “garden manicure.” No matter what project you undertake, experts say it is critical
