Seven ways to build the

BEST BACKYARD Use high-quality wood, durable metal and complementary colour palettes to power up your yard’s potential.

Y

our yard is more than an outdoor area. It is a room. That is the prevailing perspective among designers, builders and architects, and it has spurred many a Canadian homeowner to rethink these warm-weather areas. As an additional living space, the backyard deserves the same level of attention and design care as the kitchen, rec room or den. With the right treatment, your yard is transformed into the perfect place to play, relax and entertain. Any number of projects can help you realize the full potential of your outdoor living space. In this article, we offer seven ways to elevate your yard from functional to sensational, particularly with respect to decks, fences and porches.

8 I IDEAS SPRING 2015

Ideas Spring15 for Web with missing pages.indd 8

15-04-30 3:41 PM

For some of us, nothing beats the beauty and authenticity of real wood fencing and other structures. Decks, pergolas and porches made from western red cedar are particularly popular for good reasons. This material is strong, so it resists warping. It is striking, beautifully amber, red or brown. It has a distinctive and pleasant smell. It is relatively easy to work with, so even if you are new to cutting and nailing, you should have little trouble building with it. No wonder many homeowners choose western red cedar for their yards. Cedar distributor NuForest Products (Canada) Inc. has good news for people who want to use this practical and handsome material, and are concerned about the environment: cedar is good for Mother Earth. It requires no chemical treatment since it is naturally resistant to rot and insects, and it contains natural preservatives to protect it from harsh weather.

2

Ipé: a rich alternative wood

If you want your outdoor structures to stand out, consider building with Ipé wood, a species that grows mainly in Central and South America. You might also hear it called Brazilian Walnut or Iron Wood. According to Goodfellow, a Canadian Ipé provider that offers wood only from environmentally-friendly tropical forest operations, this material has a fine texture that appears oily, making for a richly distinctive surface. The Atlantic City Boardwalk and the outdoor walkways at the Treasure Island Hotel in Las Vegas are built with Ipé wood. It is exceptionally hard and also mold-, rot- and insect-resistant. Goodfellow offers Ipé planks of various sizes and anti-slip tiles that can be installed over any surface to create flooring for groundlevel patios and outdoor shower areas. Goodfellow sales director Stéphane Defossés explains that the tiles also suit condo balconies.

PHOTOS:GOODFELLOW

Lots of love for cedar

Simply lay the tiles and lock them into place with Goodfellow’s fasteners to create an eye-catching new surface for your balcony floor. Come winter, feel free to leave the tiles, or quickly unlock and store them indoors. Goodfellow has a tip: after you install an Ipé structure, lightly sand it with 80-grit sandpaper and apply a coat of Ipé oil to ensure the surface ages uniformly. Alternatively, if you want the deck or floor to mature with a natural silver-grey patina, simply leave the wood unoiled and let the weather do its work. “Some people love the grey colour,” Defossés says. “It fits perfectly with stone exteriors after one or two years.” Ipé is not some newfangled product. Builders have used it for decades. Lately, however, “it is becoming more and more popular,” Defossés says. “Our neighbours in New England have used it for a number of years, but recently we have seen more interest in a long-lasting product that can withstand the weather for 25 years even without protection.” SPRING 2015 IDEAS I 9

More beauty, less work with composite materials

One of the problems with many traditional wood decks is upkeep. These structures must be stained or painted to keep them from deteriorating. A number of decking products manufacturers have answered the call for deck materials that look like wood but need next to no care: wood alternatives designed to withstand the weather without painting or staining. Check out Zuri Premium Decking by Royal Building Solutions. It has the look of exotic timber, but holds its beauty far longer than wood. It is scratch and slip resistant, has a 25-year colour-fastness warranty and comes available in a handful of tasteful colours such as chestnut, walnut and weathered grey. Royal claims that Zuri is stronger than other non-

wood decking products: a 30% harder surface. That hardness comes from the special acrylic that Royal uses in the Zuri formula. It is the same acrylic used in other tough products such as cars, watercraft and specialty optic lenses. The addition of that super-strong material means Zuri has wear-resistance that exceeds that of interior flooring offered with a 50-year warranty.

4

Get the right deck rails

If you think it takes nothing more than a fantastic surface to create a stunning deck, porch or pergola, think again. Rails play a big role in the design, elevating your project from good to sublime. Choosing the right rails is easier than ever thanks to a swath of new products on the market. BW Creative Railing Systems, for example, offers a DIY exterior railing

that is beautiful and easy to install. Cleverly named RailSimple, it comes with predrilled balusters and connectors so the rails go in quickly. Installation takes no more than an afternoon. BW has three standout styles. Traditional provides crisp black balusters for a contemporary look, along with predrilled rails, and treated, notched and profiled deck posts for an extra edge of class. Add post caps to further customize the look. Tuscany, the second style, presents lusciously curved balusters that evoke the Mediterranean. Clearview, the third option, replaces the balusters altogether with clean glass panels, so you get a pictureperfect vista of your entire yard while you relax on a lounger.

5

Go ahead, fence it in!

Think of the fence as not just a way to add privacy to your property. Think of it as a complementary style element that adds panache to your yard. Wood fencing in the right hue and profile, be it stockade, shadow box, picket or another distinct design, effectively balances the materials used to create your deck and other structures. Stain the wood to your taste, or let the elements transform it into a stately grey over the years. Not sure what colour to choose? Get a hold of Laurentide Paint’s Permatec stain chart. Specifically designed for exterior living spaces, this handy tool can help you identify which is the best tint for your taste. The chart features a preselected grouping of the latest trends in colour for wood. The palette of 25 combinations draws from the earth’s mineral and plant realms to help showcase a wood structure’s attributes or to redefine its personality. Muted shades blend seamlessly into your yard’s natural surroundings. More vivid colours add character to accessories such as flower boxes and furniture.

aluminum is stronger, but it is also more expensive. He also makes a suggestion: keep the spacing between the posts exact. Otherwise, you may wind up having to cut the crossmembers. If that happens, no need to panic. NUVO Iron publishes cutting guidelines for just such situations on its website.

7

The Permatec portfolio includes semi-transparent colours that tint the wood, but leave the grain visible, and solid-colour stains that prioritize the chosen hue. Laurentide also offers a hybrid semi-transparent stain that combines the durability of an alkyd-based product with the easy cleanup of latex, perfect for non-pros who want to wield brushes for themselves, but fear spills.

No doubt you will want to enjoy your yard after dark, but to keep it safe, you will need lighting to illuminate steps and rails. Modern outdoor lighting systems are bright, but not intrusively so, giving you a peaceful setting as well as peace of mind. Today’s outdoor lighting systems also require very little electricity, which is good for the environment, and your pocketbook.

Metal fencing: strong and striking

Wood fencing in the right colour and style helps make your yard pop. But wood is not the only option. An elegant alternative is metal. Consider iron or aluminum. These materials are strong and durable, and a number of companies offer fencing in these resilient substances that is easy to install. NUVO Iron, for example, provides preassembled panels that simplify fence-building projects and give homeowners a range of styles to choose from. The Royal Garden Collection features majestic designs between the posts. The Gem Collection offers simple, modern lines. According to company director Carlos Pacheco,

Light up your yard life

You should have no trouble finding the perfect illumination solution for your project from the many lighting companies that compete on the market. Deckorators is one such business. Its clip system features low-voltage LED deck, post and rail lights that fasten with straightforward clips, which simplifies installation. Deckorators’ Pierce line offers lighted balusters for a clean, uniform deck-railing look. Install Deckorators’ solar post caps to brighten up any outdoor space without using any electricity at all. They come in classic metal finishes or handcrafted glass styles. Lighting, colourful structures and the right mix of materials: bring those together and your yard could be transformed into nothing less than the most popular “room” on your property.

n his 1962 state of the union address, U.S. president John F. Kennedy noted “the time to repair a roof is when the sun is shining,” and homeowners may find a number of reasons to make the next roof upgrade well before stormy weather and leaks occur. Of course, your roof is a major contributor to the curb appeal of your home, an important consideration whether selling or just wanting the

bragging rights that come with aesthetically outdoing the Joneses. “Look at it this way, when you pull up to a house the roof is first and foremost what impresses you on it,” says Malcolm Orr, national accounts manager at IKO Industries/Canroof Corp. (IKO/CRC). This is heavily a matter of function, but also form. As much as a roof must be in good repair to protect a home from the elements, it is also a large eye-catching feature of the home, so it is not hard to

Laminate shingles, longer warranties Architectural shingles made from a fibreglass base (or laminated fibreglass asphalt) are thicker than regular three-tab shingles. This adds durability, which can be identified in the longer warranties found with these products. Such shingles have become the entry-level for most homeowners, Orr says, although traditional three-tab options are available on the market for budgets limited to them. “Basically, laminates have become the base product of choice. Three to four years ago the industry moved to longer warranties on laminates. Most manufacturers have come out with a limited lifetime warranty.” These shingles can give the home a more heritage, classic look, or shake style that captures the ambiance of wood shake shingles of the past. Their weight and two-piece construction gives laminate shingles a higher wind-resistance compared with traditional three-tab shingles when properly installed. In fact, top-notch roofers can easily upgrade their wind-resistance by adding the thoroughness of a few steps such as increasing the

number of nails applied and adding adhesive, Orr says. Even still, form plays a huge part. “Put two exact houses on the market side-by-side, one with architectural shingles and another with threetab and, all other things being equal, the home with laminate shingles will likely sell first.” So strong is the appeal of architectural shingles that Orr uses the term “laminate phenomena” to describe how these visually (and functionally) improved roof covers spread throughout a neighbourhood. “Someone on the street decides to get their roof done and all the neighbours are watching, and they

know what it looked like before, and they see the change from three-tab to laminate, and suddenly everyone is improving their roofs.” He likens it to the phenomena when a neighbour paves their driveway. It looks so good and brings the aesthetics to the forefront that you naturally want to follow suit. Metal matters As three-tab shingles still exists on the market for the particularly budget-conscious, another material option exists for those homeowners who want a roof that is built to last, beautiful and possesses the

recognize the significant role it plays in property values. No homeowner wants to begin a roofing upgrade after the neighbours tell them their roof is looking shabby, Orr adds. There is great news though: since roofing replacements are generally measured in the decades, you can likely take advantage of a number of innovations that have occurred since your home’s last one. For the most part, homes are trending away from the standard three-tab asphalt shingles of yesteryear towards other more “architectural” options that give a roof shape and style. The choice of roofing material, of course, has major impact on a roof ’s appearance, but also its performance, notes Orr and other experts.

a membrane or underlayment with sand, since any movement of the roof can scratch the underside of the metal shingles which can lead to rust, he says.

wow-factor that comes with an even bigger budget: steel. Metal roofing provides durability, but also some unexpected benefits, says Jane Swayze, North American marketing manager for Vicwest. For one, she notes it offers environmental benefits, being 100% recyclable, and its thermal qualities can help to keep homes warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. More shapes and sizes have been added to metal roofing over time, but one of the more important recent innovations comes down to colour and finish. Traditionally pre-painted metal roofs have had a silicone modified polyester finish, which gives them their sheen and is great for reflecting the sun’s heat, but can create considerable glare and possible unwanted attention. “Not everyone wants to bring that much notice to their home’s

roof,” Swayze says. “Homeowners want people looking at how attractive their roof is, not guarding their eyes.” The answer: a low-gloss finish. To meet this demand, VicWest began offering four new colours (a black, gray, terracotta and brown) in the last year with such a finish. Underlayment improvements Just like a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, a flaw in installation or product choice creates a weakened roofing system. Bernie Gauthier, sales and development manager for Central and Western Canada at Resisto, stresses the need for a good underlayment. He recommends a peel-and-stick membrane as an underlayment be applied a minimum of 44” from the roof ’s outside eaves and in valleys. The rest of the roof can be finished with a synthetic underlayment. Durability is important, and Gauthier cautions against claims that a synthetic underlayment has the ability to seal itself and return to its original state after being punctured by nails. If using a peel-andstick membrane, like ones made from elastomeric bitumen, the hole will be filled and sealed by the oil-based, semi-solid bitumen. For metal roofs avoid

The right person for the job Many a handier home owner with DIY skills remembers their first roofing job decades ago on their parents’ or grandparents’ home. As labour went it could be backbreaking, but it was not exactly the hardest project. Today, though, it is increasingly a good idea to leave it to the professionals and there are a few reasons for this. Orr notes the way new homes are designed has changed and with them the ease of roofing replacements. “Years ago, weekend warriors could easily tackle the roof, but the way they are constructed now, with higher pitches and dormers and valleys that make them more involved, you want a professional team.” As for the importance of top-notch roofing skills, Orr notes that “the roof is an integral aspect to the health of the home.” Swayze agrees, and adds that in the case of less traditional shingles and systems it is that much more important to hire contractors to do the job. Metal roofing remains very niche, so not only does it require experience, you should make certain the contractor you hire is qualified and can warranty their labour. When taking the plunge on a premium roof like architectural shingles or metal the quality of the install becomes that much more important to make sure you receive the benefits of the roofing system you are paying for. Homeowners must remember to ask their roofing contractors questions about the whole job, not just the life and durability of the shingles, and to ensure they are not cutting corners (such as laying down peel-and-stick membrane without actually peel-

24 I IDEAS SPRING 2015

15-04-30 3:42 PM

ing and sticking it). How is the roof being protected from the elements by every element of the system? “A lot of roofers, what they do not realize: the roof product may have a limited lifetime warranty because it is very good, but if details like the membrane are poor then you may be defeating the purpose of that warranty,” Gauthier says. Budgets and warranties A roofing upgrade is improved by preparation and early planning, in particular around finances. Unlike many other home upgrades, which take place on your time, roofing replacements can have a habit of sneaking up on homeowners. Swayze recommends thinking ahead and putting away funds for the next roofing project or upgrade in advance. Of course, with limited lifetime warranties being offered on newer products, the upgrade may well be done by the next homeowner. When looking at manufacturers’ warranties look closely at the up-front coverage not just the length of the limited warranty offered, Orr says. During this period materials will be replaced and a reasonable amount of labour to install them if the problem is directly attributed to a manufacturing defect of the product. “It is important to take a look at what warranties the manufacturers provide,” adds Swayze. “A lot of companies offer pro-rated warranties that provide a limited amount of time in which a consumer who has a problem can get 100% reimbursement.” As for warranties, the best advice experts like Orr and Swayze offer is actually the same as what they give around styles and material choice.

“Do your homework,” says Swayze. “There are an infinite amount of styles and colours out there, and if you start early you will be ready when the time comes.” Contractor selection tips Finding the best contractor to install your premium roof is essential. Below are a few tips to help select a skilled roofing company for your project: Ask your roofing manufacturers. Who knows more about a product category and its installation than its manufacturer? Whether through their website or by directly contacting them, manufacturers can provide you with a list of good, qualified roofing contractors. Definitely check the references from past clients, but looking at their current jobs will tell you a lot about the roofing contractors, says Swayze. You can learn a lot of the things that become otherwise overlooked like how the worksite is maintained. Check for certification. A certified roofer

is a reputable roofer, says Orr. He points homeowners to the IKO or CRC websites which lists roofing contractors by various levels of certification. Check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The local BBB can be found on the Web at www.bbb.org and will identify a company’s complaint histories and customer reviews, as well as providing consumer tips to help you find quality contractors. For example, the BBB recommends getting written estimates from at least three contractors before committing to a project. Never accept an estimate without having a contractor visually inspect the area. If your roofing contractor eyeballs the job from the ground there is a good chance they may miss important details. This may include checking the attic space to ensure there is proper ventilation. Ask friends and neighbours to recommend contractors they have had satisfactory experiences with in the past and would deal with again. The BBB reminds that a local company will be easier to check references, enforce warranties or have follow up work done. Check the paperwork. Make sure their contract has the right insurance, the right workers’ compensation. Do your homework as well around how they warranty their own work and the install. Ask questions and expect answers. A good roofing company will take the time to explain what is being done and answer questions regarding the plan, any underlayment, ventilation, warranties and other details of the roofing system. Good contractors will also ask a lot of questions themselves around your request and needs. SPRING 2015 IDEAS I 25
