A homeowner’s guide to energy efficiency and comfort By David Chilton Saggers

his past summer much of the country was swept with blistering high temperatures. Municipal governments issued heat alerts and opened cooling centres in cities and towns. Do not leave a child or the family dog locked in a car for even one minute, they urged. Be sure to drink enough water and slather on sunscreen. All sound advice, but this is Canada and roasting in 35° C weather is the exception. Temperate to bitterly cold weather is the norm for most of this country for nine months of the year, and it is coping with those temperatures that Canadians must concern themselves with. So how do they cope? What tools do they use to keep out the cold and at the same make sure escalating energy bills do not shred the household budget. Chris Higgins, LEED Canada for Homes program leader at the Canada Green Building Council in Vancouver, says there are a few easy, obvious moves householders can make. One of them is to Your home is your Castle I 9

change the furnace filter frequently to ensure greater efficiency, he says, and another is to install draft proofing on older, that is single pane windows. It should be remembered, says Higgins, that the plastic from the kits available from many hardware and home renovation stores is ugly but effective even if only for a year or so. Another reasonably straightforward change that can be made is actually replacing aging windows, says Higgins. He recommends Energy Star windows, which are rated A to D for their energy efficiency, with D being the highest rated. Further, says Higgins, fixed windows have the tightest seals, with casement windows sporting the second tightest. Changing the windows in a house, while incurring a significant upfront cost, will be repaid in full and then some over time. It should also be remembered that heat lost through windows runs in the 20%- 30% range. However, one of the worst offenders when it comes to heat loss is the attic. A significant amount of heat from the house gets lost through the attic and out through the roof. As Higgins says, “attics are a great place to start insulating.” Insulating an attic is a fairly easy job for the average or better DIY enthusiast,
he adds, noting that attic insulation should be installed to a minimum R50 value. If your insulation in that part of the house is not to that standard then he says it makes sense to top it up until it does. Typical types of insulations for attics are fibreglass batts and blown-in insulation, and made by a number of firms including Owens Corning. The company says a great option for topping up your attic insulation yourself is its AttiCat Expanding Blown-In Insulation System. In less than two hours, you can bring your attic insulation to the recommended R50 value (based on an attic size 100 m2/1000 ft2 at RSI 8.8/R50). It is a safe, reliable system which is quick and easy to use with virtually no mess to clean up. Mike Macey, national account manager at Owens Corning Canada in Kitchener, Ont., is forthright about insulation and its direct link to energy efficiency. He recommends more insulation and higher R-values for everyone. “It just adds more comfort to your experience,” says Macey. Once the heat-stealing attic is attended to, Higgins suggests that walls, particularly north facing walls, come next. “The north wall loses energy almost year round,” he says. “Start with the north wall.”
Higgins, and rockwool. A combination of low perm XPS insulation and mineral fiber insulation (glass or rockwool) is a great system for insulating basements and keeping them dry. Perhaps the most vexing of energy efficiency problems is the exterior door. After all, it is meant to be opened and closed. The best that anyone can
do is make sure that the door and the doorframe are well made and right for the job. Hardy Rahn, general manager of Alliance Door Products in Winnipeg says, the structure of the doorframe is crucial. “How the frame is attached is very important,” he says, cautioning homeowners against
Insulating walls can be done by a doit-yourselfer, Higgins continues, but it can be “stressful” given the time it takes and the disruption to family routine. There are also other inconveniences for the DIY person. Dust will be ubiquitous, and in older homes householders
should be on the lookout for lead paint and asbestos, both of which have serious implications for our health. Whether the homeowner decides to do the work himself or hire a contractor, Higgins advises spending $300 to $400 on thermal imaging of the house. Taken in the morning, the images reveal sites of heat loss. “It’s a modest investment,” he says. “It can give you a sense of where your leaks are.” When they are found, the right kind of insulation comes next, of course. There is fibreglass, which is deployed everywhere due to competitive cost, but there are also other types. There is shredded recycled newspaper, says

What would you tell the handier than average DIY person who wants a more energy efficient and comfortable home?
going for the least expensive door they can find, and reminding them that water and air, particularly air penetration are their enemies. As for the materials used in exterior doors, it should be a slam-dunk for one product over the rest. Rahn says a 1” wood door will have an R1.5 value more or less, but an insulated steel door will have R12 to R14 values. Rahn, who says Alliance Door sells “thousands” of doors to DIY customers, also offers some advice about their installation. Do not ignore the instructions that come with them, he says; they come with the product for a purpose. His counsel might be expanded to include insulation and windows, too. If the householder is serious about energy efficiency and comfort, the more help available to them the better. Broiling in the sun does not last, at least not in this country. q 14 I Your home is your Castle
A. In terms of bang for buck, I would ask a client ‘what
is the insulation in your roof right now?’ The R-value that we’re shooting for now in roofs is R50. You lose anywhere between 30% and 50% of your heat through your roof. If you want to reduce your energy bill and increase your comfort then by looking at your roof you can see if you should add insulation there. If you’ve got R50 then you’re good. If you don’t then take it up to R50. If you live in a rural area, and if your siding is of poor quality or needs repair, I would say start taking off the exterior if it is vinyl and start putting up polyiso board (a thermoset plastic). It offers R7 values per inch. The best ones are those that are foil-faced on both sides because the foil insulation radiates heat in during the winter and keeps the heat out in the summer. Now, in any stud wall construction we have thermal bridges, but for the most part you can reduce those thermal bridges or eliminate them altogether with this extension on the exterior. In older cities homes are going to have a brick walls. Often they are wrapped in plaster with no insulation. We come across this all the time in Toronto. There are two options to counter this. One is an e-fit system for the outside, something like an acrylic stucco, although there are problems with that. For option number two the best choice is to insulate from the interior with a two by four stud wall, leaving a one-inch gap, and putting an air barrier in. Should any water come through the membrane is going to stop it and it eventually will dry out.
Q. What about doors? A. The highest R-value doors, the most
durable doors are essentially a pre-finished metal door. They come with a flat pattern version; some come with a window and some have (insets). Any of those doors are good, but the thing you want to make sure of is that there is good weather stripping around it. Even something as simple as having hardware that is thermally broken (to eliminate thermal transfer) helps. Also, having a storm door helps a lot.
Q.
Windows can cause 20% to 30% heat loss. What can be done?
A.
Double glazing is about R2 value, and with argon gas and low-e it’s about R3. Triple glazing is R4. That’s as much as you get.
Q.
So from the roof to the windows R-values drop from 50 to 2 or 4?
A.
Yes, but keep in mind that you lose about 40% of your heat through the roof.
You can see their windows and doors are built for serious
performance.

space and creating drama.

he use of light, shadow and colour can create rooms that highlight individuality and even capture a mood, all because of four distinct product categories – moulding, windows, doors and paint. For anyone with do-it-yourself spirit, here are some tips from product and design experts involved with each category that will allow you to create the perfect space.
Moulding is one of the quickest and easiest ways a DIY-inclined homeowner can take advantage of light and shadow to create drama in a room, says designer Andrew Pike of Toronto-based Andrew Pike Interiors. “Because there are so many options available you can go as big or small as you like,” he says. Homeowners who cannot afford the expense of a major moulding job, such as replacing a room’s crown, can still make a big difference with a little cleverness, says Pike, who frequently works with manufacturer Moulding & Millwork of Brampton, Ont. In this case, he recommends building onto existing moulding. “One of the tricks I like to use is if you cannot replace all your moulding, you can add to it. If your crown moulding is too small for the height of your ceiling, leave a space of about 2” and add a piece of chair rail and do the same to the ceiling. “When you paint that all together it looks like the moulding is significantly larger than it is.” Such a build-up is in no way limited to crown moulding. Marianne Thompson, vice-president of sales and marketing at Alexandria Moulding, says the effect

Moulding
can provide handy homeowners with a cost-effective, but dramatic upgrade. As well as building on crown, she suggests the option of placing a gap above a baseboard and running a simple panel moulding above it. “Once it is painted and if you stand back, it gives the visual effect that it is all one solid piece of baseboard, but for only a fraction of the cost.” When similar techniques are used on crown moulding, she says, “it gives the illusion of upscale, but a DIY customer is not paying the same cost.” It is the contrast of light and dark created by shadow that gives moulding its definition and impact. Concave profiles produce a horizontal shadow that is darker at the top and lighter at the bottom, while convex profiles do the opposite. Whether it is concave or convex, or
set away from or towards the wall creates different aesthetic effects, Pike notes. He adds, though, that there is a simple guideline: “Basically, the more detailed the moulding profile is, the more light and shadow you will get; so, you will get the highlights in all the raised points and the shadow in the lower points. You can create a lot of drama just by doing that.” A lot of moulding put in homes today is very simple, but can be “beefed up,” he says, by adding wider door and window casings or higher baseboards with more detail. As an example, consider adding back bands for an additional level of detail and accent to the door and window casings. “The great thing about mouldings and trim is there are so many different profile choices for homeowners,” says Thompson. “It really becomes up to you, a décor choice. It’s like picking a fabric, there are many that will fit a design, but you will have a favourite.” In fact, it does not even stop with retail options available. Thompson notes that moulding companies such as Alexandria offer custom profiles so that a DIYer can create their own, which is then made by the company. There is generally a two to three-week process while it is created, but the end result is a one-of-akind moulding and look. Your home is your Castle I 25
The best light is, of course, natural light. Installing new windows is beyond the capabilities of most DIYers, but that does not mean you cannot take advantage of sunshine. “Daylighting” is the science of using windows, other openings and reflective surfaces to make the most of natural light to reduce the energy demand created by electrical lighting. Advocates also suggest that natural light has positive effect on mood, energy and stress levels. In fact, even rooms without windows can take advantage of daylighting through the installation of a solar tube (or sun tunnel), such as those offered by Velux Canada. Since a modern trend in homes is toward larger windows, mouldings trends 26 I Your home is your Castle
are also playing off the increased light, Thompson says. “Natural sunlight has a big impact on a room, and mouldings with a clean, smooth surface such as many contemporary ones, have profiles that really bounce the light off of them making the room appear even brighter.” Teri Maltais, marketing and communications manager at Moncton, N.B.-based Allsco Windows and Doors Ltd., suggests dispersing the light from a south-facing window using blinds. Angling it towards the ceiling provides bright light, but less heat-gain in warmer months. A light paint with a reflective sheen on the ceiling will enhance this effect. Of course, while daylight lights up a room over time it fades paint, fabric, carpets, furniture, photos and artwork.
work. You do pay more, but West notes it is offset by time savings, the elimination of needing to purchase specialized tools (such as a hole saw for the lock) and components (such as hinges, jam and stop) that are included in pre-hung options.

Windows and doors
Homeowners with newer, energy-efficient windows with low-E (low emissivity) will find they can make the most of natural light. The glazing reflects heat away during the summer, reducing unwanted heat gain and fade-related damage. To make a small room larger add French doors, suggests Brad West, director of sales for Eastern Canada at JeldWen Windows and Doors. The door’s large glass panels will visually open up the room, even when closed off. Of course, doors themselves can have raised moulding added or built in. As with crown, the bigger the moulding, the more shadow created, the more dramatic effect. Options abound; for example, JeldWen’s Custom Carved Wood Composite interior doors have moulding pre-applied to them and more than 100 different profiles. Not every option from every manufacturer can be on display at your local retailer simultaneously. “Be sure to ask about what is available or you might miss the perfect design. Most retailers cannot stock everything, but they can get it,” says West. The good news for DIYers is that all types of interior doors are generally available pre-hung. This takes away much of the hardest and trickiest installation
“Using a pre-hung door is your biggest time saver,” West says. “Also, typically any door you can buy as a slab you can order pre-hung.” Instead of basic white for interior trim, Maltais suggests considering the lightest tone from your favourite palette as an option. Continued on page 29

Colour choice plays a big role in the contrast and effects created by light. Use of lighter colours can create an airier effect, especially in particular situations. If your home has a large window or grouping of windows that can act as a focal point, paint the surrounding wall a shade or two lighter than others, Maltais suggests. The effect will be that, as day-

light streams through the window, a room will appear even larger. When it comes to small rooms with north-facing windows Maltais says to consider going against the “knee-jerk inclination” to use bright colours, and consider darker, more commanding colours as an option. It is a dramatic effect, though, be sure to take the time to select the right shade. Test it if you can. “The key to building a successful colour scheme is to opt for a light wall colour that will reflect natural window light,” says designer Marc Atiyolil, ambassador for All Weather Windows. “This will make your room look and feel bigger.” In the case of moulding, Pike likes to suggest homeowners go against the common grain when it comes to colour choice. For example, it is common to paint crown moulding with the same finish as ceilings; however, he prefers to paint it the same colour as trim in the room. A crown with a bit of sheen on it really pops out, he adds. Be willing to think outside the box, and work with your room’s overall space and style. “If you want to do something really dramatic paint your crown high-gloss black,” he says. Even without moulding, wall and ceiling paint can open up a room or make it cozier. Alison Goldman, brand manager
Old Window DIY project: If you happen to be having new windows installed, designer Marc Atiyolil, ambassador for All Weather Windows, suggests saving your old panes for a simple project that turns them into picture frames.
Supplies: • Single pane vintage window • Black and white photos • Double-sided tape • Wire
Step 1: Print black and white photos in the size of your choice. Step 2: Using double-sided tape, adhere the photos to the glass. at CIL Paints, suggests that a monochromatic colour combination in the room will add a feeling of height. To do this, paint the ceiling the same colour, but different tint, than walls. On the other hand, painting the ceiling colour down along the top foot of the wall will create the illusion of widening a room and lowering its ceilings. The artificial line created by this effect can be enhanced through crown moulding painted the
same colour to create a distinct barrier. A darker colour or shade on the ceiling further adds to this effect. Do not shirk from the use of colour, light and moulding to build your impactful dream room. “Consider the moulding and trim in your home to be the backdrop to everything else,” Pike advises. “When ‘the bones’ of your house are good, you need to do less with it.” q Your home is your Castle I 29

The unique four way interlocking system allows for quick installation and tightens on all four sides to resist wind uplift and heavy snow loads.
