Delving into the foundation Welcome to the first edition of Rough Construction, a sister publication to the popular Spring and Fall Ideas book designed to provide relevant information about the cornerstone of any structure – the exterior walls, roof support and foundation. It is a big piece of the homebuilding puzzle and for the contractor professional and a group of dedicated Castle suppliers involved in products ranging from concrete forms and vapour barriers to gypsum, rigid insulation and roofing, ultimately critical. At a time when every corner of this country is revising provincial building codes or has adopted the National Building Code of Canada 2005 (NBC), it was felt that both contractors and the consumer need more insight, particular now that the need to go green in the building sector shows no signs of diminishing. In fact, as Lisa Bate, the newly elected chair of the Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) pointed out at the organization’s second annual National Summit in June, despite these times of economic uncertainty, interest in green building continues to grow.
In this issue
“People recognize that a green building is an efficient building, and efficiency has real economic as well and social and environmental value,” she pointed out. “The escalating interest in sustainable design illustrates the desire and commitment people have to realizing that every building can be green.”
4 Insulated Concrete
To that end, many of our advertisers who appear in this first edition have provided a separate page of editorial to discuss a pertinent issue of their choice related to the building envelope.
8 Engineered Wood
An example of that is Building Products of Canada Corp. on p.14. The article submitted by the company notes that “now more than ever, homeowners are asking contractors to use environmentally friendly products in their home. Today’s ecology movement has convinced them that ‘green’ products will not only help reduce energy use, they will also make their homes safer, healthier and more enjoyable places to live.”

Plasti-Fab Plasti-Fab® offers expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation solutions to support building designs that emphasize energy efficiency and sustainability from the ground up. PlastiSpan HD insulation can be applied to either the interior or exterior of foundation walls to create a continuous thermal insulation layer around the foundation wall that eliminates thermal shorts. Since design of energy efficient building envelope starts at the foundation, Plasti-Fab also offers PlastiSpan® HD insulation for installation below the concrete slab to reduce heat loss that would occur through an uninsulated basement or slab-on-grade floor. Reduced heat loss to the ground below means the floor surface temperature will be maintained closer to the room temperature. When PlastiSpan HD insulation board is used as a component in hydronic radiant floor heating systems, heating energy required to maintain water temperature in hydronic tubes is reduced. Radiant heat is uniformly distributed throughout the floor surface area resulting in a more comfortable living space while improving the overall energy efficiency of the radiant floor heating system. Plasti-Fab also offers the Advantage ICF System® for use as a stay-in-place form to construct and insulate concrete foundation walls in one step. The Advantage ICF System is a patented insulating concrete form (ICF) system that consist of two EPS insulation panels that
4
form the outside surfaces of the wall forming system connected with polypropylene webs molded into the EPS insulation to space the EPS panels creating the desired concrete wall thickness. The Advantage ICF System initially provides the concrete formwork for foundation wall construction and is a stay-in-place insulating formwork that provides insulation, air barrier, vapour barrier and attachment surfaces for interior and/or exterior finish materials on the long term. The result is a monolithic concrete foundation wall with a continuous layer of thermal insulation on both sides to significantly increase R-value and improve energy efficiency of the structure. The Advantage ICF System can also be used for above grade wall applications to provide a higher effective R-value than typical stick frame construction. The finished wall also provides significantly improved air leakage characteristic to further improve your building’s energy efficiency and reduced green house gas emissions. The quality of PlastiSpan HD insulation, the
Advantage ICF System and all Plasti-Fab EPS Product Solutions are ensured through 3rd party certification to recognized industry standards combined with Plasti-Fab customer service and expert technical support. Building envelopes constructed using our insulating products are “enabling technologies” that support modern building concepts such as Net or Near Zero Energy (NZE), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) certification, Energy Star and Built Green programs. Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) evaluation report 13016-R for the Advantage ICF System and CCMC evaluation listing 12425-L for PlastiSpan HD insulation available at http://www. nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/eng/ibp/irc/ccmc/registry-productevaluations.html ensure demonstrate compliance with the National Building Code of Canada 2005. Step by step instructions to assist with the use of PlastiSpan HD insulation and the Advantage ICF System for the construction of concrete slabs and foundation walls are available at www.plastifab.com/howto.html.

INSULATED CONCRETE FORMS
Broadleaf Insulated Concrete Forms, better known as ICFs, have been used in the Canadian Market Place since the late ’60s. They are a lightweight, rigid insulation, block forming system for steel-reinforced concrete walls. ICFs can be used in both above grade and below grade wall applications. Blocks are stacked and locked together to quickly build walls. These walls can have varying heights and thicknesses, and be designed with any shape or curve. ARXX Corporation, headquartered out of Cobourg, Ontario, has been in the business of designing and marketing Insulating Concrete Form (ICF) building solutions since 1978 – more than 30 years.
THE TOP CHOICE BY CUSTOMERS: As the leader in the industry, ARXX has more projects (over 100,000), square footage (over 130 million) and trained installers (over 35,000) than any other North American ICF company, making them the solid, safe choice.

ENGINEERED WOOD PRODUCTS
iLevel ELP Whenever starting into a construction project, there are two objectives that everyone shares; to finish with a quality structure of sound construction, at a price point providing the best result for the money spent. To those two goals, wood construction remains one of the best materials of choice. Easily workable with readily available tools and trades, more than well-recognized by local and national codes regulations, readily available, and all at a price-point that continues to make wood-based products the on-going standard in residential and light-commercial construction. In addition, wood-based products, as produced by socially responsible manufacturers, are one of the best environmental choices of all building materials. Unlike steel and concrete that add to the net amount of carbon in the atmosphere in their production, wood-based products capture and store more carbon from the atmosphere than is released in their manufacture. And as the timberlands from which wood-based construction products are harvested are then replanted and regenerated, more carbon is captured back out of the atmosphere, making wood the right choice for all of us. When it comes to wood-based building materials, one of the best versions, are engineered lumber products (ELP). A family of value-added products, each specially made for a particular use in the construction project. I-Joists - manufactured in an “I” shaped section are ideal
8
floor and roof joists, combining strength, long-lengths without bulk and added weight. Beam & Header products such as Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) Parallam Strand Lumber (PSL) and Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL) make ideal beam, header and framing materials including tall, two-storey window walls. Engineered Lumber Products provide very consistent strength properties, piece to piece, with none of the natural flaws of knots and grain, while being readily available in long-lengths and large sections as required by your construction project. These products, combined with software design and sizing programs will greatly assist anyone on achieving the two goals of a quality project, at a good value. Castle Dealers carry and represent the Trus Joist® brand of ELP, as produced by the Weyerhaeuser Company. Anyone from professional building contractors to do-it-yourselfers can bring a set of architectural drawings to a Castle Dealer, who
can either directly, or from support by their distributor, turn the architectural drawings into a structural plan, complete with a bill-of-materials through Weyerhaeuser’s proprietary design software, Javelin®. While often more expensive when compared on a “per-lineal-foot” basis than dimension lumber, because engineered lumber products are so reliable, designs can be optimized to various levels of quality and performance to match the target budget for the project. As a result, projects constructed with engineered lumber often can be done with fewer pieces, there by saving costs on both materials and labour in the construction. All things considered, wood-based materials continue to be the right choice for construction, with engineered lumber products offering a superior option for both cost and quality. To find out more, see your local Castle Dealer.

Build Energy Efficiency into Your Home with Solutions from Dow Heating and cooling accounts for 63% of all residential energy use in Canada.* This, in turn, represents a significant portion of most household budgets. It is not surprising that many homebuyers are highly interested in a home’s energy efficiency features. And as a bonus, “greener” homes reduce their impact on the environment. Energy loss can occur in many areas of the home. Two of the largest areas are the above grade exterior walls of the home and the below grade interior and exterior basement and foundation walls.
ABOVE GRADE ENERGY LOSS SOLUTIONS With STYROFOAM™ Brand CLADMATE™ and CLADMATE™ XL Insulation and integrated system components from Dow Building Solutions, homebuyers can benefit from value-added, proven, greener solutions that can help reduce energy loss and save money. Homebuilders and re-siding professionals can offer their customers enhanced energy efficiency. STYROFOAM™ Brand CLADMATE™ and CLADMATE™ XL Insulation covers the entire exterior wall surface – helping to alleviate conditions that can lead to energy loss, including: • Air infiltration • Moisture intrusion • Thermal bridging through wood framing • Air convection in the wall cavity •W ood frame and mechanical detailing that reduce the amount of cavity insulation Air infiltration accounts for 25-40% of the energy used for heating and cooling a typical home.** For a tight build, it is also crucial to consider the home as an overall
system that should be insulated and sealed against air infiltration through major areas (walls and roofs) as well as gaps, cracks and penetrations. In addition to rigid foam insulation, a host of integrated system components from Dow work together to help protect the home from air and moisture intrusion: • WEATHERMATE™ Plus Housewrap • FROTH-PAK™ Foam Sealant*** •G REAT STUFF PRO™ Gaps & Cracks Insulating Foam Sealant*** •G REAT STUFF PRO™ Window & Door Insulating Foam Sealant***

Homes have one thing in common: Their foundations must come in contact with the earth. Wherever you build, moderating the effects of soil, water, temperature and air on the foundation can impact the performance and integrity of the total structure. Continuous rigid foam insulation is an effective way to reduce foundation energy loss and protect against moisture problems. Invented by Dow more than 60 years ago, STYROFOAM™ Brand XPS Foam Insulation continues to provide excellent moisture resistance because of its durable, closed-cell structure. This rigid foam insulation: • Enhances drainage • I nsulates the below-grade wall to reduce the potential for condensation • Protects the waterproofing/damp-proofing •P rovides a more comfortable environment throughout the home

FIBER GLASS INSULATION
JOHNS MANVILLE IS DEDICATED TO THE HEALTH, COMFORT AND QUALITY OF THE HOMES YOU BUILD. Johns Manville launched its building materials business over 150 years ago. Today, they operate 40 manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe and China. Based in Denver, Colorado, they are the leader in fiber glass insulation solutions and are known for their focus on healthy and safer building environments.
HEALTHIER, SAFER JM CERTIFIED FORMALDEHYDEFREE™ FIBER GLASS INSULATION. A healthy living environment is important to all of us at home, in the workplace, in our schools and buildings. Reducing the overall amount of formaldehyde creates a healthier indoor living environment, and using JM Formaldehyde-free™ insulation is one way of achieving that goal. Research shows that when given a choice, 89% of homeowners prefer insulation made without formaldehyde, and 79% would be willing to pay up to 10% more for it.1
ENERGY EFFICIENCY MATTERS CLOSE TO HOME, AND BEYOND. Properly insulated homes and buildings require less energy to heat and cool. That energy efficiency helps conserve our natural resources and reduces our carbon footprint. In fact, leveraging the proven technology of fiber glass building insulation to reduce energy consumption is one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to minimize impact on natural resources. Properly insulating and sealing air leaks is the single most cost effective way for a homeowner to save energy. It’s typically far more cost-effective than installing CFL’s or thermal windows or even buying a hybrid vehicle. Because the Formaldehyde-free™ product line is made without formaldehyde and contains at least 50% recycled glass, JM Formaldehyde-free™ insulation is the only line of bonded fiber glass insulation that can meet the current requirements of the Environmental ChoiceM Program.
Innovative insulation solutions from JM JM EASYFIT® PERFORATED FIBER GLASS INSULATION JM EasyFit® insulation features vertical perforations that allow installers to separate sections by hand, rather than cutting the insulation, to quickly and easily fit any width cavity either as a whole batt or in a combination of pre-cut widths. EasyFit batts allow contractors and installers to significantly increase their installation productivity. •F ast, easy installation – installation is 10 to 20% faster in sidewalls compared to traditional fiber glass batts.2 •T hermal efficiency – provides effective resistance to heat transfer with R-values up to R-21 (RSI-3.7). • Naturally mold and mildew resistant
JM UNFACED FIBER GLASS INSULATION JM Unfaced insulation is a lightweight thermal and acoustical fiber glass insulation made of long, resilient glass fibers. It effectively controls heat flow to the exterior, unwanted noise in internal walls, and to assist with moisture control, a separate vapor retarder can be applied. •T hermally efficient – provides effective resistance to heat transfer with R-values up to R-38 (RSI-6.7). •C ontrols sound – reduces transmission of sound through exterior and interior walls and floor/ceiling assemblies. • Fire-resistant and non-combustible • Naturally mold and mildew resistant 1 JM proprietary research. 2 Based on comments from contractors participating in trials.

FIBERGLASS IS MORE SIGNIFICANT THAN YOU THINK Whether you are building a new home or simply remodeling your existing home, we know that saving money and energy is important to you. Let’s face it, it’s important to us all. This is why it is essential for you to consider the fiberglass insulation installed in your home. Not only should it be affordable but it should provide additional long-lasting benefits to you and your home – benefits such as year-round comfort, a quieter home environment, improved thermal performance and reduced energy costs. Today’s insulation technology is more advanced and economical than ever. By installing the recommended amount of fiberglass insulation according to your geographical location, you may reduce your heating and cooling costs up to 32%. It pays to give some consideration to the fiberglass insulation installed in your home – for the life of your home and the comfort of your family.
THE PROPER R-VALUE IS KEY Insulation is specified by its thermal resistance, or R-value. “R” means resistance to heat flow; the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power, the greater your potential savings on heating and cooling costs.
HOW MUCH INSULATION DO YOU NEED TO INSTALL IN THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF YOUR HOME? The amount of insulation you may choose depends mainly on the climate you live in, the type of heating (gas, electric or oil) you use and the area of the house you plan to insulate.

HOUSE WRAP
The TYPAR® Weather Protection System Means High Performance. Comprised of TYPAR® HouseWrap or TYPAR StormWrap™, a family of flashing products, and construction tape, the TYPAR Weather Protection System guards homes from the damaging effects of moisture and air penetration. What’s more, it helps building professionals meet green building standards with cost-effective products that help create energyefficient, comfortable, healthy homes. Installed before the exterior siding, TYPAR HouseWrap protects homes and buildings from nature’s harshest elements with an industry-leading tear strength that’s proven to be five times greater than that of the leading competitor. It also provides an essential balance of water/air holdout, moisture vapor transmission (MVT), optimal surfactant resistance and ultra-violet stability.
SUPERIOR WATER HOLDOUT. As a weather-resistant barrier, TYPAR HouseWrap blocks air and water from entering the wall cavity.
OPTIMAL MVT. TYPAR HouseWrap keeps the weather out, but also breathes so moisture vapour is allowed to escape. TYPAR material will not support the growth of mold.
SUPERIOR TEAR STRENGTH Proven to withstand heavy winds, TYPAR HouseWrap ensures superior air holdout, and is equivalent to 5/8” particleboard in stopping air leakage without the butt joints that allow infiltration.
20 rough construction rough construction_32_pages.indd 20
EXCEPTIONAL SURFACTANT AND UV RESISTANCE. TYPAR HouseWrap reduces the damaging effects that oils and tannins from OSB, soap and powerwashing can have on the system’s ability to block bulk moisture penetration. It also stands up to UV rays on the jobsite for up to six months without significant loss in toughness.
SEAL YOUR HOMES TIGHT WITH TYPAR FLASHINGS AND TAPE. When you install windows or siding, assure a tight building envelope by using flashing around rough openings. Between TYPAR Flashing Flex, TYPAR Flashing BA and TYPAR Flashing RA, there is a flashing product for every climate, budget and need. TYPAR Construction Tape firmly seals seams and edges and can be used on window flanges and corners, as well as repair rips and punctures.
LEED® CERTIFICATION. The use of the TYPAR Weather Protection System additionally qualifies for several of Canada Green Building Council’s LEED® certifications for new residential construction.
INDUSTRY-LEADING WARRANTY. No other manufacturer of weather-resistant barriers matches the dual warranty protection of TYPAR. When using the full TYPAR Weather Protection System you get a lifetime limited product warranty, plus a 10-year Start Smart limited warranty that guarantees complete coverage of labor and materials if the product fails after being properly installed. For more information, visit typar.com.
IMPROVED INDOOR AIR QUALITY AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY. Using the TYPAR Weather Protection System for the building envelope reduces a number of risks, such as water intrusion, which can lead to mold growth, and other potentially damaging results that may have an adverse impact on indoor air quality. By sealing walls tight in the building process, drafty air can’t seep in or out, improving energy efficiency within the home.

HOUSE WRAP - ROOFING UNDERLAY
Intertape Polymer Intertape Polymer Group (IPG) offers a range of building products designed to protect the home from exposure to extreme weather conditions, and save money in energy costs. FlexGard Aspire house wrap offers the latest technology , to provide a non-woven, non-perforated moisture control system that acts as an air and moisture barrier, while also allowing moisture vapour to escape from the cavity of the wall space. It is popular among installation professionals because of its strength, workable texture, and translucent qualities which make for easier alignment with studs, windows and doors. IPG also offers a synthetic roofing underlayment under the Nova Seal brand. Synthetic roofing underlayment is an excellent way to protect against water damage caused when shingles or other roofing systems are damaged by storms, or the test of time. The cost of Nova Seal is very comparable to felt based underlayments, but it can be left exposed to the elements for up to 12 months without being compromised. Nova Seal II features an embossed coating, offering superior slip resistance, and comes in rolls 4’ x 250’. It also comes with a 25 year warranty. IPG offers a complete range of tape products, including contractor grade sheathing tape, which has an aggressive solvent based acrylic adhesive designed for permanent seaming, and sealing of joints of foam insulation, house wrap, and other types of sheathing. Their tape is CCMC approved, and rated to perform at temperatures as low as -40 degrees celcius.

AIR/VAPOUR BARRIER MEMBRANE
Resisto Red Zone 25 RESISTO products are manufactured to the highest environmental and industrial standards by Soprema Canada, a worldwide leader in the commercial and industrial construction industries, with a solid reputation for quality waterproofing products. Created in 1996, RESISTO’s Red Zone products have continued to be among the most popular air/ vapour barriers and waterproofing membranes in the Canadian market. Recognized by engineers and contractors for both quality and reliability, the Red Zone rubberized membranes are available in a wide variety of roll sizes and distributed in approximately twenty countries. Experience shows that Red Zone products help to reduce potential air quality problems, lower high energy costs, and effectively protect against water damage. Building on this success, RESISTO is introducing RED ZONE 25, a new product manufactured to the same high standard as all other Red Zone products, but specifically engineered for consumers who require a thinner membrane without sacrificing quality or losing any of Red Zone’s superior adhesive capabilities.
RED ZONE 25: AIR/VAPOUR BARRIER AND WATERPROOFING MEMBRANE RED ZONE 25 is a self-adhesive 25 mm membrane composed of elastomeric bitumen and trilaminate woven polyethylene. RED ZONE 25 is an air/vapour barrier, a layer of rubberized membrane intended for application to an exterior surface which will then be covered with
sheathing or other materials. Easy to use, it has a silicone treated release sheet which is removed from the adhesive side immediately prior to application. RED ZONE 25 air/vapour barrier membranes may be used in a wide variety of exterior applications including, for example, on door and window frames, brick or roof flashing, skylights and solariums. See below for RED ZONE 25 features and benefits, recommended uses, application and warranty.
RED ZONE 25: FEATURES AND BENEFITS • provides a continuous air/vapour barrier • eliminates drafts and water leaks • provides a layer of thickness which is consistent for the entire application • self-seals around nails and screws • is UV resistant (if covered within 90 days) • can be sprayed with polyurethane foam • remains flexible at low temperatures • applies easily, cleanly • does not require special tools
RED ZONE 25: RECOMMENDED USES Use RED ZONE 25 for: • exterior, above ground applications only • window and door frames • solarium structures and skylights • brick and roof flashing • creating lap joints* * when using RESISTO waterproofing membranes which have been installed without overlap
RED ZONE 25: APPLICATION Minimum installation temperature: • RED ZONE 25 Regular 50˚F(10˚C) Winter 14˚F to 50˚F (-10˚C to 10˚C) • ensure the surface to be covered is clean and dry • prime the surface with RESISTO exterior or interior primer (strongly recommended) • when the primer is thoroughly dry, peel back the release sheet to expose the self-adhesive side as the membrane is applied • apply to surface using even pressure with hands or a metal/hard rubber roller • ensure the membrane is evenly applied to avoid wrinkles, air pockets or buckling • cover the membrane immediately after installation with the finishing material (with the exception of metal)
