Sage advice about an energy-efficient retrofit The energy-efficiency revolution and the many products that together make up the building envelope are so tightly linked. It is one of many reasons that we print and distribute this publication each year. I wrote in 2010 when we launched Rough Construction that at a time when every corner of this country is revising provincial building codes or has already adopted the National Building Code of Canada 2005 (NBC), both contractors and the consumer need more insight, particular now that the need to go green in the building sector shows no signs of diminishing. My opinion has not changed and in fact, I recently came across an excellent article on the Web site of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca) that discusses in length how best to perform an energy-efficient retrofit of that “outer layer of the building that separates the living space from the outdoor environment.” Its authors conclude that while the “process of improving the energy efficiency of the entire building envelope can seem like an overwhelming task, prioritizing the different aspects of the work and learning about viable retrofit techniques can help you to work through the many decisions that must be made. “A house is much more than just four walls and a roof — it’s an interactive system made up of many components including the basic structure, heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, the external environment and the occupants. Each component influences the performance of the entire system. A renovation provides an opportunity to improve how your house performs.” The article also recommends asking a series of questions well before the supplies are purchased and the job begins. Questions such as how air tight in the building? How energy-efficient are the windows and doors? Is there sufficient ventilation? What options are there for improving the insulation and air tightness of the walls? Is there any evidence of moisture problems in the existing building envelope? Doing your homework and reaching out to the experts is, in the end, the one and only recipe for success.

Wire Mesh

Polyethylene film

Reflective insulation

Solidly assembled, Duchesne’s wire mesh comes in a wide range of gauges and standard sizes or other sizes to meet your specifications.

Duchesne’s polyethylene film is manufactured in accordance with the highest standards of quality and features a unique packaging and product identification system.

Duchesne's reflective insulation is made of high quality aluminum insuring high reflectivity with one or two layers of air bubbles, trapped between two layers of polyethylene film for maximum insulation.

In 2008, the extensive efforts of the company to improve its methods and production standards were rewarded. In February 2008, the polyethylene plant was awarded ISO 9001 certification. This award recognizes Duchesne's management methods and quality control efficiency from order entry, production to service.

Duchesne is proud to offer an eco-friendly alternative to its reflective insulation line with its new DBE-ECOTM. The polyethylene film, used in the production of this product, contains over 50% recycled materials.

The products are available in sheets or rolls and manufactured according to ASTM A497-07 and ASTM A185-07 standards . Wire mesh is mainly used to reinforce concrete. Usually use for concrete floors, driveways, concrete pipes, septic tanks, manure pits and balconies. As well, wire mesh is used in mines as a protective device attached to the vaults of tunnels.

Rebar A rebar (short for reinforcing bar), also known as reinforcing steel, reinforcement steel, or a deformed bar is commonly used as a tensioning device in reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures holding the concrete in compression. It is usually formed from carbon steel, and is given ridges for better mechanical anchoring into the concrete. Rebar is manufactured according to CSA G30.18-09 standards. Two types of rebar are available : Type R (regular), for general use and Type W (weldeble, for specific applications where one of these specifications need to be met: Increased weldability; Increased ductility; Restricted mechanical properties; or restricted chemical composition. Rebar of type W is identified by a “W” that is laminated on the bars that are manufactured for these purposes.

The new generation of Duchene’s polyethylene films demonstrate well how the eco-ID program put in place by Duchesne has contributed to the development of a new alternative by offering green products to customers more conscious of the environment. According to industry standards, ULTRA+TM vapour barrier is the only product in our polyethylene line that is approved CGSB 51-34 and meets the building code standards. Our polyethylene line is now growing, two new products are now available to respond to the market demand : the EXTRA PROTM and ULTRA X PROTM. EXTRA PROTM is a multipurpose film which offers maximal strength to resist heavy industrial and commercial works. *ULTRA X PROTM is manufactured per the requirements of the CGSB 51-34. It offers the highest thickness in our product line and can be used as a vapour barrier in applications where UV and tear resistance are required. *Not to be used in building construction.

In addition to being a more environmentally friendly insulating solution, it offers the same performance as the standard products. It can be used as well in the attic, walls, water heater, crawl space insulation, as other products of the same composition. Reflective insulation can be used as a sensible choice to increase the comfort level of homes while reducing energy costs by increasing the R value of the insulation. Because it is an excellent vapour barrier, it eliminates radon gas infiltrations.

Duchesne has become a Canadian symbol of excellence in the field of building materials. From product design to production, from packaging to shipping. We are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of quality at every step of production.

JOHNS MANVILLE IS DEDICATED TO THE HEALTH, COMFORT AND QUALITY OF THE HOMES YOU BUILD. Johns Manville launched its building materials business over 150 years ago. Today, they operate 40 manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe and China. Based in Denver, Colorado, they are the leader in fiber glass insulation solutions and are known for their focus on healthy and safer building environments.

HEALTHIER, SAFER JM CERTIFIED FORMALDEHYDEFREE™ FIBER GLASS INSULATION. A healthy living environment is important to all of us at home, in the workplace, in our schools and buildings. Reducing the overall amount of formaldehyde creates a healthier indoor living environment, and using JM Formaldehyde-free™ insulation is one way of achieving that goal. Research shows that when given a choice, 89% of homeowners prefer insulation made without formaldehyde, and 79% would be willing to pay up to 10% more for it.1

ENERGY EFFICIENCY MATTERS CLOSE TO HOME, AND BEYOND. Properly insulated homes and buildings require less energy to heat and cool. That energy efficiency helps conserve our natural resources and reduces our carbon footprint. In fact, leveraging the proven technology of fiber glass building insulation to reduce energy consumption is one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to minimize impact on natural resources. Properly insulating and sealing air leaks is the single most cost effective way for a homeowner to save energy. It’s typically far more cost-effective than installing CFL’s or thermal windows or even buying a hybrid vehicle. Because the Formaldehyde-free™ product line is made without formaldehyde and contains at least 50% recycled glass, JM Formaldehyde-free™ insulation is the only line of bonded fiber glass insulation that can meet the current requirements of the Environmental ChoiceM Program.

BP’S WEATHER-TITE BEATS 2 TORNADOES TM

CANADIAN MADE SHINGLES HOLD STRONG A veteran Environment Canada investigator said it was the worst damage he had seen in 36 years of investigating violent storms. In August 2011, two F-2 or F-3 tornadoes, with winds of 300 kilometers an hour, battered the small town of Goderich in southwestern Ontario, on the shore of Lake Huron, killing one man and injuring dozens of others. In addition to downed power lines and trees, damage to homes and businesses was extensive, including several roofs blown off. However, two recently completed roofs using BP’s Everest laminate shingles with Weather-Tite Technology were completely undamaged. Not one BP shingle was lost.

Vicwest’s steel roofing stands up to hail, fire and high winds. What you recommend reflects on your reputation. So talk to your customers about the longer lasting roofing alternative – Vicwest steel. Unlike many other roofing materials, steel will last upwards of 50 plus years and resists fire, hail and severe winds. Add Vicwest steel roofing to your product line-up as a value added alternative. Ask about our 12 steel and stone coated steel roofing profiles, plus our wide range of colours and finishes at your Castle building centre, or visit vicwest.com Longer life expectancy: With warranties of up to 50 years, and a life expectancy of up to 100; steel roofs are proven to last longer than traditional roof materials. Fire & weather resistant: Unlike ordinary roofing materials, steel roof panels interlock with each other creating a weathertight, sealed system. Steel roofs are impact resistant against hail, they withstand heavy winds and rains, can tolerate extreme fluctuating temperatures, and will even hold true in earthquake prone areas. And because they are non-combustible, the steel panels cannot catch fire. Lighter weight: Much lighter than all other roofing materials, steel roofs actually ease the stress on a home's structure. Heavier roofing materials can require costly structural reinforcement. More cost effective: Long lasting steel roofing comes in on the lower end of the price scale when compared to expensive clay tiles, slate or cedar shake shingles. Easy to install: In many cases it can be installed directly over an existing roof without having to remove the old roofing material (where building codes allow). Low maintenance: In addition to its weather-resistant qualities, a steel roof resists the growth of mold and mildew, making it virtually maintenance-free.

22 rough construction

VICWEST More energy efficient: Unlike many heat-absorbing asphalt shingles, steel roofs actually reflect the light from the sun, keeping your home or cottage cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Many steel roofs can reduce energy costs by up to 40 percent. For increased energy efficiency choose a lighter colour, and ask your steel roof manufacture for the SRI (solar reflective index) values of the colour you are considering. The higher the value the more reflective the roof.

More environmentally friendly: Steel roofs generally contain recycled material and are 100 percent recyclable at the end of their service life. This is not the case with other roofing materials, such as asphalt shingles, that take up significant landfill space and adds to your budget when removal fees apply at the end of their life.

Variety of styles & colours: Available in a wide range of styles profiles and colours, steel roofing can mimic other materials like cedar shake, clay tiles and even asphalt shingles.
