ENERGY STAR for New Homes This edition of Rough Construction comes at a time when both contractors and homeowners need to be aware and become familiar with the latest update to ENERGY STAR for New Homes, otherwise known as ESNH. The new and improved standard, which took effect on Dec. 1 of last year, was developed by Natural Resources Canada (NRC) with assistance from home-building professionals across the country and key industry stakeholders, some of whom can be found on the pages of this publication.

Unlike the previous standard, which was only available in Ontario and Saskatchewan, the latest version is now available to new home buyers across Canada and further contributes to energy efficiency through some new and tough requirements.

For example, according to an NRC document, its stringency has been increased to keep the energy efficiency level in an ESNH home a full 20% “better” than emerging codes.

“By identifying and promoting energy-saving products the initiative helps protect the environment and lowers energy bills at the same time. The Office of Energy Efficiency of NRC has promoted the international ENERGY STAR symbol in Canada and monitored its use since 2001.”

A recent NRC press release pointed out that in order to earn the “trusted label,” homes must be built by a trained ENERGY STAR builder and meet technical requirements developed by the federal government.

In addition, the homes themselves must be verified by an independent third-party energy advisor to ensure they meet the standard.

The NRC document states that key features of a typical ENERGY STAR home include: • More energy space conditioning systems such as furnaces, air conditioners and water heaters.

• Fenestration products such as windows, glass doors and skylights that are ENERGY STAR qualified.

This feature alone may reduce energy costs by more than 10%.

• More insulation in the ceilings and walls than required by the building code.

• In terms of air tightness, homes that qualify must meet specified maximum air leakage limits, which help save energy for heating and cooling as well as increasing comfort.

It is a valuable and worthwhile initiative.
