INSIDE OUT

The Next Room You Improve Might Just Be Outside the House Written by Lawrence Cummer

With the Canadian dollar sinking to new depths, this might be the year for a “staycation” to enjoy what’s in your own backyard. It may also be the perfect time to let your imagination run wild and improve the look and functionality of your even-more valuable outdoor space. From coast to coast Canadians have been spending more and more attention (and money) on their back yards, and with good reason, say building product experts, since we are also spending more and more time in them. From cooking and entertaining, to relaxing with a good book, to the nurturing of home vegetable gardens, countless trends are driving us to make the most of our outdoor spaces. “Overall, homeowners are starting to value the outdoor living space more than they ever did before,” notes Ernie Couillard, Executive Vice President at Regal Ideas Inc. “So, they are focusing a lot on improving the quality of the materials that they are using to create this outdoor living space.” While beautiful pergolas and custom decks are certainly on the rise, they are just part of the “outdoor living” trend, says Jamie McKee, Sales Manager for Yardistry Structures, in which householders seek ways to increase their homes’ usable square footage. “It is really being able to design a room on the exterior of your house, so that it

adds to the living space; being able to put furniture out there, and fireplaces, barbecues and all that other great stuff.” Be forewarned, though, some of the work involved in bringing the inside outdoors can take some serious engineering skill, especially if adding elements like outdoor kitchens or hot tubs, or complicated building structures. These jobs could warrant calling in a trusted contractor, while many other projects are more than easy enough for a handy DIYer and can add style to a formerlyhumble backyard. Yardistry, for example, offers kits to build perlogas, gazebos, gates, panel fences and garden features. Many of their structures feature unique bracket-less craftsmanship that McKee says helps them better stand the test of time, but some also fall between DIY-friendly and needing professional skills.

Decked Out in Composites When you start to look at the deck as an extension of your living space, decking becomes like fashion, says Jeff Morrison, General Manager, National Building Products at Goodfellow Inc. “It is now almost like the flooring industry. The deck is a statement, and people are looking at how to ‘wow’ each other.” IDEAS

SPRING 2016

11

In that respect, gone are the days of simple, square decks. Many homeowners are embracing decks featuring different angles, bent or rounded boards, unique designs and fresh colours and textures. Composite decking too has become a popular choice, Morrison says. He says many homeowners look to Fiberon composite decking as a high-performance wood alternative, because it can meet the demand for impressive, customized design, but also since it now offers a rich selection of multi-chromatic colours and textures and desirable performance attributes like stain and fade resistance, zero or low maintenance and uniformity. “If a burger falls off the grill onto the deck, or leaves are left in the fall, you don’t have to worry about the deck staining,” Morrison says. Innovations such as slip resistance, improved

durability and better temperature tolerance have made composite decking even more appealing. “Composite decking handles extremes very well,” he adds. “It is the material of choice in the Prairies; it is not impacted by moisture.” The ability for composites to handle Canada’s weather issues, whether moisture or an extreme freeze-thaw cycle is precisely what Brent Gwatney, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for MoistureShield, says attracts homeowners to his company’s composite decking and railing products. “Our product can go on the ground, in the ground, and under the water,” Gwatney says. “People will say, ‘We don’t install decks underwater, why do we care?’ Your deck is under the water when it has 3’ of snow sitting on top of it for months during those freezethaw cycles.”

Wood of a Different Colour Timber for outdoor building projects has not been without its own innovations in recent years, especially around treatment techniques and colour. Many DIYers are familiar with pressure treated wood. Chemical preservatives are added to lumber under pressure in order to create a deeper, more uniform penetration and higher absorption of preservatives. Most are also familiar with the green tint traditionally found in such PT wood. In 2013, however, Timber Specialties Co. introduced a new “micronized” copper preservative to Canada dubbed MicroPro. The copper is ground into micro-sized particles before treatment, which proponents say makes it more resistant to leaching into the environment. This process allows colour pigments to be added during treatment, resulting in brown-treated

wood, as in the case of Timber Specialties’ MicroPro Sienna, and the more earthy-toned Goodfellow Terra. Experts were unsure at first what to expect, but the uptake of brown-treated wood has been remarkable. According to Mary-Anne Dalkowski, Vice President of Marketing at Timber Specialties, production and sales of MicroPro Sienna Treated Wood has doubled every year: from 1,500 tractor trailer loads in 2013 to 6,000 tractor loads—or 200 million board feet—last in 2015. Wood has remained the best-selling material choice, notes Regal’s Couillard, since the price is just right for many homeowners; however, he says, some eschew the maintenance work involved and so are turning to alternatives such as composite substrates and aluminum railings and fences. In additions, improvements in durability, colour-fastness and options around aluminum products have increased their popularity. “People work harder and longer right now, and don’t have time for maintenance,” echoes Kevin McQuin, Director of Sales and Marketing, Liv Building Products. “That’s why low-maintenance railing systems and products like our Deckorator line of composite decking products, with strong warranties, are so well-received.”

Crystal Clear Views With all the time being spent out back, many homeowners are opting for options that will let them see more of their handiwork or investments through transparent railing options, such as Liv Building Product’s Invisirail glass railing system. “We Canadians can’t get enough glass,” McQuin says. “Glass railings are really popular, and the trend is starting to move down to the U.S.” It is the reverse of the usual situation where Inside Out

SPRING 2016

13

SIDE NOTE

Canadians adopt tried-and-true U.S. trends, but McQuin notes Invisirail was developed here, and we do love of our outdoor and cottage living. “You paid for the view, this helps you have it.” The 10 mm glass system is heat-soaked and tempered, and “torture tested” to ensure it can handle our temperature extremes. It sits between posts, but doesn’t require a railing (or cable, as has become popular in the U.S.) Even railing posts or brackets may become a thing of the past, according to Couillard: “Regal has a new product called CrystalRail this year, and it’s really the first completely frameless glass railing. It’s 10 mm no-iron glass—so you don’t have that green hue on the glass—and that gives it better clarity and much better illumination.” It is all about what you want to see “pop” and what you want to hide, says Ken Scott, Canadian National Sales Manager for Century Aluminum railings. “Some like a heavy rustic post,” he says. “Some like a topless railing system, which we call Scenic Railing.” He adds

14

SPRING 2016

that most homeowners today want low-maintenance, but also the durability that comes from superiorly engineered products. “Remember, railings are a life-saving device, so they must meet national and provincial building codes.” He takes pride in his company’s strength in this area while being able to maintain DIY-friendly installation.

Rockin’ Façades Another home-grown Canadian innovation finding its way into backyards is Edmonton-based InStone Distribution’s Quality Stone paneling. This is because of its ability to create the look of stone masonry with neither the cost nor weight of stone walls and columns—nor the necessary masonry skills to install it. Jason Duniec, National Sales Manager at InStone, says although it is non-structural, it can add flair to backyard projects as small as planter boxes to as large as retaining walls and fences. It comes in a number of types and textures to mirror the naturally occurring

Sealing It Up When building an outdoor product with wood, one of the most important things you can do is seal it against water, says Ralph Swan, Senior Account Executive and product specialist for Thomspon’s WaterSeal at Sherwin-Williams Co. Most backyard projects use pressure treated wood or cedar. While resistant to insect infestation and rot, pressure treatment doesn’t guard against water and UV rays, Swan says. “So although it lasts longer, it’s still needs extra protection as well.” While the benefits of a water seal may not be immediately visible they will show over time when wood would otherwise warp, shrink and splinter, ultimately becoming weaker and sometimes dangerous.

IDEAS

stone across the country. “It is very common to use it for skirting underneath the deck, so it looks like a stone foundation; deck support posts are hugely popular, and there are easyto-apply panels for that,” he says. “It can also be used to cover railing posts, for example, to create a strong design element between those glass railings.” Because Quality Stone is light-weight, structures need not be reinforced to support it, a boon for those designing stylish outdoor kitchens or barbecue surrounds. “It also provides significant acoustical properties,” Duniec adds. Fences clad in the product will have a better sound wall between you and your neighbours. In the end, though, industry experts note that the sky is the limit for projects in this ceiling-less outdoor room. So get out there and do it!

Of course, follow the direction of any deck coating closely, but also consider the weather. Thomspon’s has developed product that can be applied to a damp deck, but heat and sunlight still make a difference. “The temperature is critical,” Swan says. “If the deck is hot to the touch, it’s not a good time; if you know you’re going to get a lot of full-on sun exposure, it’s not a good time. “You want the product to get into the wood, not to sit on top of it. If it dries on the surface it will flake off.”

CURB APPEAL What’s Hot and What’s Trending When it Comes to Improving a Home’s Exterior Written by Melissa Campeau

When it comes to houses, we do judge our books by their covers. That’s why homeowners often put so much thought, effort and budget into the exterior of their homes. Since home improvement spending is projected to pick up pace in the first half of 2016 (according to the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University), expect a good portion of that spending bump to focus on boosting curb appeal. Since spring signals the launch of a major wave of outdoor renovation and fix-up projects, we talked to industry-leading experts about what’s hot and what’s trending. Here, we zero in on what homeowners are

likely to want, as they plan and prep for their homes’ fresh new looks.

Standing Out, Getting Noticed Expressing a little personality is becoming increasingly important to many homeowners, and in some cases, technological advances have made that easier. “We’re seeing a return of many decorative elements such as large crown mouldings, corbels, brackets and various gingerbread trims, which can be created from cellular PVC materials,” says Rick Kapres, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Versatex Building Products. “Builders had gotten away from doing these things because of maintenance issues associated with IDEAS

SPRING 2016

21

wood.” With the advent of cellular PVC, however, that’s all changed. Cellular PVC can be crafted like wood, while remaining impervious to moisture. “Builders can offer these high aesthetic pieces, knowing that they’ll stand the test of time,” says Kapres. In terms of cladding, as well, homeowners are increasingly drawn to something off the beaten path. “People want to have their home stand out from their neighbours’ or even stand out from their neighbourhood,” says Grant Cowx, National Retail Sales Manager, Royal Building Products. While the company’s biggest seller in the vinyl siding category is still a dark grey shade called ‘wrought iron,’ dark shades of much bolder colours—reds, blues and greens—are gaining ground. “I’d expect that to be a continuing trend for us

this year and I’d think for the next few years to come,” says Cowx. Homeowners are adding character with texture and shine, as well, mixing materials to add visual interest. “With our aluminum siding, for example, we’re seeing it used as one of multiple claddings on a home,” says Cowx. “So you can see something like aluminum siding used as a decorative accent on a home that has stone and wood.” He adds, “It’s a more contemporary look and the curb appeal is really quite remarkable.”

Mix, Match and Create Dave McNeil, VP Eastern Canada & National Accounts Manager for Taiga Building Products reports a similar trend. “The market has developed a strong interest

in a combination of stone facing and alternate siding materials,” says McNeil. “Taiga has plans to work with Nova Brik in Quebec in the coming year to their new Nova B Stone. This category provides another option for builders and homeowners to create their vision, whether that be a renovation or new construction.” Another trend of note: technology is keeping up with customers’ demand for greater choice. “Homeowners and builders have more choice than ever when it comes to siding substrate and colour,” says McNeil. His company distributes a variety of siding materials, in wide range of colours, each with an option for custom-colours, as well. “As well, new and innovative technology means we can also provide two-tone finishing to create a very attractive and real-wood

look for interesting siding options,” says McNeil. At James Hardie Building Products, creators of fiber cement siding, they’re seeing an interest in a wide range of shades, as well. “This year’s trend, based on market analysis, is toward darker, richer colours with beautiful trim detail around doors, windows and corners,” says Ryan Ralph, Manager National Strategic Accounts for the company. “Our six new colours—in greys, browns and a deep blue are trending very well, while our traditional Timber Bark, Iron Gray and classic beiges continue to play an important role in our colour design options.” There’s also a movement towards an increasingly modern feel, when it comes to siding. “A more contemporary look is becoming popular across the country, with Eastern Canada leading the charge,” says Ralph, who notes that unique shadow lines and flat wall looks, created by the company’s panelized system, are in demand.

Trend Alert: Stone and DIY Another exterior treatment gaining traction is the addition of stone, or stone veneer. “We’ve noticed a continued demand for stone products for exterior applications,” says Bob Sanders, Director of Sales and Marketing for Fusion Stone. Homeowners are opting to add stone to exterior walls or as accents around particular features, to outdoor living areas such as kitchens and BBQ surrounds, and on sheds and garages, too. Sought-after colours lean to the natural and neutral, in black, grey and brown shades. “It’s a look that offers warmth, some soft colour and a country appearance,” says Sanders. In the case of Fusion Stone, the product is DIY, something that can help reduce project costs since stonework expertise isn’t necessarily required. Curb Appeal

“In four easy steps, anyone that can handle a drill and a level can quickly install the product, limited only by their imagination,” says Sanders. “Fusion Stone was designed as a DIY product and that’s been responsible for much of its success, but it’s increasingly installed by professional contractors.”

Good Looking and Low Maintenance Frank Owens, Vice President Marketing for The Quikrete Companies notes homeowners are still keeping budgets in mind, and this will naturally impact some of their decisions. “Homeowners are likely to focus on manageable projects that make a bigger collective impact on a home’s curb appeal,” says Owens. “Concrete is a great place to 24

start because it’s both versatile and durable.” That versatility is becoming common knowledge, with a better general understanding of just how many looks and applications homeowners can achieve using concrete designs on their patios, driveways, sidewalks and porches. Minimal maintenance remains a big draw for those who chose concrete products. “Even the most dated concrete surface can be brought back to life,” says Owens, “whether by cleaning with a cleaner, etcher and degreaser, renewing with a resurfacer or applying a penetrating stain.”

A Bit of Bling There’s another application for concrete, too. Sakrete

ShapeCrete is a product that plays like clay but works like a concrete. “It can be rolled and moulded into any shape, including sleek, modern house numbers,” says Shannon Polk, Marketing Manager, King Home Improvement Products. “Customers like that they can customize a piece that fits with the existing esthetic of their house,” says Polk. “Whether the desired look is modern, rustic, traditional, bold or quaint, DIYers love the endless possibilities.”

Garage Doors for Big Impact Given their size—and often their prominence—garage doors with character are a natural way to raise a home’s curb appeal. Travis Reynolds, Director of Marketing with Steel-Craft Door Products, says garage door Curb Appeal

upgrades can include customized styles, colours and glazing options. Right now, says Reynolds, contemporary design options in garage doors are big, with narrow windows stacked vertically on one side of the door. When it comes to colour, “The growing trend across the country is for walnut, cedar and charcoal colors,” says Reynolds.

Finessed Fences More than just a practical afterthought, fencing is increasingly becoming a way to add impact to a home’s exterior. Dean Beattie, of Medallion Fence, says the market for iron fencing is growing. Homeowners are often drawn to the product’s sophisticated and upscale look. “It offers tremendous curb appeal,” says Beattie. “If, however, wood fence is the popular choice in a neighbourhood and privacy is required, home owners can still install ornamental iron fence as an accent, or simply run it along the back of their properties so they’re not completely boxed in.” He adds, too, that homeowners can pair well-placed shrubs or bushes with iron fences to maximize privacy. Durability is the other big appeal of iron fencing, since it’s coated to ensure little or no upkeep required. “More and more home owners are choosing a premium fence because they don’t want to deal with maintenance issues down the road,” says Beattie. “Wood tends to blow down in the wind, or rots, or needs staining or painting. Vinyl is fragile and also doesn’t stand up to Canadian winters— or baseballs.”

A Welcome Change Whether projects are big or small, upgrading a home’s exterior can be hugely satisfying for homeowners. A refreshed, updated exterior can increase both a home’s value and a homeowner’s sense of pride. Even more important: a home with high curb appeal is a welcoming thing to come home to every day.
