'ORGANIZING & ESTABLISHING' FINDING ARCHITECTURAL"ORDERED MECHNISM" ‘Organizing and Establishing’ are two architectural terms which can represent my creative works well, for my design process can help me recognize the difference in existing factors, draw the relation between their variety and complexity and materialize the difference and relation through ordered mechanism. Accordingly, when I begin to work, I always try to find out and perceive ‘Forces’ at the present situation. Though they may be abstract and conceptual words or environmental metaphors existing in reality, once I analyze their properties and gradually clarify the images, I’m able to form a basis for architecture of my own which could maintain close relations between them.

RE-IMAGINING PENN STATION The Void Between Penn-Station & MSG UPenn_ARCH 701 Design Studio Instructor: Thom Mayne Group work / Fall 2015

In this Studio we have researched and speculated about a new developmental strategy for Penn Station. We analyzed the historical issues (political, operational) that caused such severe ruptures in the Station’s history. Simultaneously, we have examined the opportunities that lie within the city’s urban context and propose a strategy that will address the social and economic challenges of the neighborhood. Also, we re-evaluated and integrated the multiple political

and infrastructural agendas that at once buoyed and burdened the development of Penn Station resulting in its current state of demise. By considering the intersection of multi-nodal transportation and planning policy regulations, economics and social impact, and the previously proposed development strategies, the studio have worked to redefine the notion of what a transportation hub will be for the next generation.

Thinking of Urban Scale_Relationship between Site Context Penn station has very small volume and disconnected with MSG and other programs above the ground. So, the main issue was how the station and MSG have a new connection and how we can make maximized volume of the station still keeping the MSG at the existing site. MSG lifted up and has a new organization with void in the center, so they can have more flexible areas. As MSG and station is merging, they can also, have large area on the top of the roof, as a park for New York city.

Transformation Progress With urban ideas based on our researchs, we more focused on the architectural scale of the Penn station. We tried to figure out how the new relationship between MSG and Station with Void can have sorts of transformation progress. Basically, the stadium has its own figure, the stand figure is very clear object to be fixed, but the other part of stadium is able to transform according to the context. The public

hall of MSG is located on the front of the street. The frame is easy to recognize as an entrance for people who are using station and by doing this, the station has strong urban axis from west to east. Since our mass has so deep and long length, we thought another entrance of light is needs. And this carving space is connected to pathway for other block’s roof top.

There are various aspects that people can recognize the void. In the main concourse area, reversed openess is povided and in the middle of building level, it become a edge of the inner space where people can observe the continuous spectacle through the void. The most top level is an urban park which is new level of open space in the New York City inbetween tall buildings' forest.

In this studio I worked on the problem of near-figuration, which is a form of resolution of the polarizing discourse of form versus shape of the last ten years. Near figuration is defined as the appearance of distinct, legible objects from illegible conditions, that is, as the simultaneity of things which have both graphic and formal features. In this semester, I extended that problem to include involuted figures, which can simultaneously create exterior depth effects but also interior spatial figuration. One of the fundamental things architecture does is characterize the threshold between exterior and interior. In this, it must take an ontological position with regards to the state of existence of “outside” and “inside”, and the degree to which they might be illusions. LaTour captures that indeterminacy so well when he says “there is no outside…the outside is just another inside.” This studio defined this threshold as elastic but not blurred. Like black holes, these involutions may not constitute literal points of entry but rather moments of allure and lack of access. In Interstellar (2014), Chris Nolan goes to great lengths

to represent black hole possible, the most “real” based on scientific calculation and state of the art rendering techniques, producing never-before seen phenomena at the event horizon. Despite how it is presented by Nolan - as a form of knowledge and plausibility- what resonates in the film is the mysteriousness of the object and its seeming impossibility. Stanley Kubrick, that film’s greatest influence, knew this innately, choosing not to burden his monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) with being “real” in the sense of accurate or concrete, but rather making it even more alluring as a matter of speculation on the real. When Dave Bowman, rocketing across the expanse of the monolith, utters “my God, It’s full of stars”, we are confronted with a vexing entity that is delimited in scale on its exterior, yet seems to contain the universe. Its contents are bigger than the container- something Timothy Morton associates with “hyperobjects”, or entities that are vast yet withdrawn. In this studio, we will speculate on new container/ contained and inside/out relations in architecture, and seek to produce strange new forms of interiority.

The Starting point of High Line The Floating Mass above the High line extends High Line Park's public space more vertically, while the platfrom functions as a canopy above. Ground object also makes a connection with pedestrian way under High Line, where another entrance can be generated.

Academic Work | PennDesign Refer to "Flat Ontology of Architecture, Tom Wiscombe" "Project, A Journal for Architecture, Spring 2014, Discreteness, of Towards a Flat Ontology of Architecture, Tom Wiscombe" The Object is a vertical museum. Verticality alludes to its civic function, but also maintains the building’s distinction from the horizontality of the infrastructural buildings. The mass of the building is super componet; it is made up of both large and small Jack-shape objects collected into a composite, irreducible shape. Its silhouette becomes more defined towards its base, where it stands lightly on the ground on 'Jack' tips and faces. This gives the sense that the building is dislodged or movable. The ground it stands on is in fact another building which further defers landing of the Jack-shape mass. This ground-building is a reified shadow cast from the mass above. Architecture, in this way, begins to produce its own context. 26

Vicarious Relation with HighLine Withdrawing from contexts like the High line creates a discrete and internalized world for art. This withdrawal is intended to incite and confound speculation as to the building’s origins, and create a sense of mysterious depth beyond its superficial qualities.

The building is sitting close to the High line, which is directlyopposed idea with existing new whitney museum. This site plan is more aggressive way to have a relationship with the high line as an urban infrastructure.

The Involuted black hole became outdoor gallery, where the carved 3D Tatto traces became movable space like corridor for watching art works. Liner have its own shape between involuted figure and envelop, where they have non-gallery programs like office and culture center.

Mega Component-Chunk System This detail chunk model is to take a new approach to design development as it is conventionally understood in practice. I re-considered drawing in terms of plastic survey and magnetic resonance imaging, where things can be hacked apart, peeled away, cut away, sliced and exploded.

Cuts will no longer be flat as in conventional plans and sections, but will be warped and active. I Attempted to combine multiple ontologies into the discussion, where things may be represented in terms of their profile, silhouette, internal organization, energy, action on other things, depletion, integration, and dis-integration all at the same time.

In times of immense growth in capital due to economies in the world there is more capital than ever in the world today. While monetary capital has always played a significant role in determining the built environment, recent shifts in the character of global finance have resulted in a new relationship between investment practices and buildings. In this era, the growth of capital leads to affects in architecture and urbanism. New York City for example has 12 percent of its housing market vacant. That is a large number. Mega buildings are newly constructed as capital market logic. Buildings are getting denser and expanded, but are getting empty. That is, they can be called Ghosts or Zombies city. How can architecture take on this issue and be more in alignment of or critique architecture formed global capital markets?

Individual office prototype

The individual office building is comprise of 4~5 floors, where users organize their own space program by themselves. Inner facade is whole glazing system, while outsite is solid pannel for indirect light effect. Indirect light from the involuted gap between individual buildings is critical point for interiority in this new skyscrapher. Users in this building experience new atmosphere from the indirect light through multiple facades which is new typology in terms of view inside.

Each building pieces are small program by itself. However, in order to exist as one building, it need to have publicity. The Bridge act as not only circulation, but als o public area for all users in the building.

The formal expression of the built object is simultaneosly restrained and quirky. It sits on the site with floppy way as if curtain for the theater. Especially, front bottom elevation has unfamiliar aperture, which creates and completes a distinct graphic identity for the street landscape.

Another scale effect in NYC

Its height is tall enough compared to other tower around, even the tallest one near the Central park. However, since their way of composition has difference emphasizing individuality of each pieces, it is more like vertical clustering, not just mega volumatic tower.

New Prototype of Complex for Residential & Commercial * Graduation Award with Excellent prize, 2005-2006 I looked for the place where a variety of urban infrastructures coexist in a metropolis like Seoul. In regard to this, ‘Dongdaemun Market’, one of the most famous markets, was the perfect place for the experiment on my architectural viewpoint. Through the medium which connected coexisting factors here such as cubic roads reinterpreted on the border where different programs meet, I tried to bestow a new order on the site.

DESCRIPTION: There was disappearance as well as appearance of many things due to its restoration. At the very site, the poor street vendors who had scraped bare living were threatened to lose their shelters and bases of livelihood under the name of urban development. At this, I tried to answer the question like what I could do for them. I came to know the backgrounds about the time, politics and economy here and made dozens of field investigation and surveys on behavior of the poor vendors, which motivated me to contemplate the mechanism for the balance between the interest of a society as a whole and the disadvantaged life of social underdogs, and to produce the “Ordered Mechanism_urban blur�, and I expected that there will be regeneration for new citizen lives and culture.

Phase 01: Located in the existing seven-story roadside Cheonggyecheon distribution of commercial buildings over 200m in length are a form of plate-shaped mass. This approach is limited in mass and one can not but stir the program. Thus, programs, people, and culture for a smooth communication system required. Phase 02: the phenomenon that many programs are superposed over the clear segment of the program complexity and can be equipped with a system that can be adjusted. Their respective mass manufacture, sale, distribution, and program for the meeting can be set. Phase 03: pre-existing sites and programs to promote diversity and to meet the basic framework is more than a three-dimensional system with the need to evolve a mechanism and the behavior of which can hold shift and public programs through a transparent band this can provide power to operate mluti-programs. This Band can be composed of exhibiton, restuarant, small shop and public space to meet differnet individuals.

Proposal of the NEW prototype of the complex for residential and commercial Part of the city's development paradigm is positive and the negative side coexist. The city is being restored Cheonggyecheon purification of livelihood but lived here for the original low-income traders lose their place in the midst of crisis. Lower part of the paradigm of traditional mixed-use high-rise residential and commercial facilities consisting of representatives of wealthy water. However, the level of housing for the underprivileged paradigm to pursue. Typical of this new mixed-use development on the back of the light the hidden dark areas can be a little light.

What is new city’s paradigm? It’s a system which is able to control indiscrete expansion and contraction in urban. Thinking of urban boundary_ The new city should be able to form diverse interaction by comprising diverse hirachies’ spaces after escaping ununiform relation of masses which corresponding urban. Moreover, we have to create new program through the process of change from one-sided limited program to multidirectional interaction.



Academic Work | Ajou Univ The individual elements comprising urban structure show indiscreet and indeterminate situations, as even if having particular charatecristics. This phenomenon can be refered to spatial idiosyncrasy in current urban. The ‘New City’ which is to be organized and designed on historical district in Incheon should be becomed to the image to be able to create another obvious urban identity when thus identities are in harmony. The city, urban, architectural installations and places will play the role COORDINATING diverse urban entities, forming new urban paradigm and leading rapid change in urban.

And we have termed these cities DATA CITY. In Incheon Station to be a new plan, visitors can visit the three cities to buy INFORMATION magnetic information provided by the consumer and the seller of the cities around them, and the city is provided by a variety of producers INFORMATION, DATA, and these roles are active INFRA has been growing constitute the entire city goes .

Growth for the city: In order to be sustainable, the city should grow over time, as if the organisms be grown. Flecibility in the city: The city is a where different people are gathered and acts diverse activities. Thus, each elements of the city should be more flexible to accomodate diverse features of the city rather than be definite.

WALL OF GROTESQUES Hard-Boiled Wonderland Wall

A strange and dreamlike novel, its chapters alternate between two bizarre narratives — "HardBoiled Wonderland" (a science-fiction part) and "The End of the World" (a surreal part). The evennumbered chapters deal with a newcomer to "The End of the World", a strange, isolated Town, depicted in the frontispiece map as being surrounded by a perfect and impenetrable wall …..His Shadow has been "cut off" and this Shadow lives in the "Shadow Grounds" where he is not expected to survive the winter. Residents of the Town are not allowed to have a shadow, and, it transpires, do not have a mind.

Academic Work | PennDesign Gesù Nuovo, Naples, Italy (1750) Dematerialization‐Awkward Scale Characterized by the pyramid‐shaped ashlar stones on its façade, whose carvings are said to be esoteric symbols

Awkward Symmetry

Overall façade designed based on the symmetry. Simple relationship with 6 windows and boundary conditions.

Unique façade

The façade is not flat like most other churches, but covered in mini pyramid shapes made of stone projected out from the surface. The architecture is unique in its simple facade comparing to other architecture in the Baroque. There are pulled out elements mostly for the decorations. There is a hybrid of simple geometric shapes such as triangle, square, and circle and it harmonizes and creates interesting shades and patterns.

Pliable branch– Organic, Light, Pliable Structure

The contemporary constructive logic, human-made structure, that is more liked rigid in terms of structural and aesthetical aspect. Otherwise, the Fundamental of structure system in nature world is very pliable one as well as they also purse a kind of firmness to sustain from forces like gravity, which is our aesthetic quality of the structure system.

To bring a feeling of hardness from the precedent study of Gesu nuovo, we created variable hard chunk and carved in intaglio and relief. It results in having a shadow and light effect as well as creating a hardness wall.

Characteristic Aggressive wall - hardness Triangulated Shadow – assembly of individual shadows Pyramid shaped component - 3 dimensional components Brutal material – Stone Object-ness and object relationship Wall getting an object-ness through designing certain boundary profiles, rather than a Field-type, endless wall Aperture getting an object-ness through emphasizing the window profile. Weird proportion of openings – Window size becoming bigger from bottom to top Construction / Fabrication All organization of wall was fabricated based on stacking technique on simple grid frame

Maintaining object-ness of individual wall elements such as wall, apertures and structure is key to generate an weird wall-ness which has a strange atmosphere come from distinct treatments of scale, texture and shape. And the way of combining object is supposed to be involved with exaggerating each characteristic, rather than reducing the quality of object-ness. -Wonder Wall-

The new office building of The Korea Teachers Pension Head Office is the trinity in pursuits of a stable future of teachers through organic connection of three bodies(Teachers, The Korea Teachers Pension Head Office, and the Country). The building stands at the intersection of two axes, configured to the street that offers the greatest abundance of sunlight and ventilation. The continuous volume of the lower levels is transformed in lines and sections within the tower and becomes a part of the Eco Smart Skin.

Site Plan Concept A fuction which is determined by building condition and site context is an access from the north and recognition of image as symbol from a corner. Moreover, it should play a role a pleasant environmet to office program with southern location. The edge of the mass that flows meet and loover design should be considered in order to fulfill motif of this design concept and program of the building. Even though the programs are divided by podium and tower, the surface and the volume have to be maintained infinte.

The nonlinear podium intentionally leads visitors to inside, improving structural continuity and finish of the Urban Fabric of the innovative city while responding to the urban axis. Such circulation adds dynamic energy and continuity to the urban context and accentuates. The podium that acts as the entrance to the building is an extension of the urban axis that extends the urban context of Naju into the offices. This move accentuates the visual recognition of the urban landmark as an intrinsic part of the city. The building stands at the intersection of two axes, configured to the street that offers the greatest abundance of sunlight and ventilation.

The main entrance is placed through the open square in the east of the site, where the landscape is well harmonized with the water. The lower levels accommodate a promotion hall, customer service room, multi-functional all and sports facilities, in connection with the outdoor space known as the harmony court and Green Culture Slope in the south. The continuous volume of the lower levels is transformed in lines and sections within the tower and becomes a part of the Eco Smart Skin.

What we consider in this site? The cluster of Munhak stadium is one of the palce in which citizen in Incheon has came frequently. Moreover, the site is located in front of the entrance of the cluster. Thus, New Moonhak swimming pool will be a symbol representing surrounding envrionment and familiar to residence near the site. Another thing that we do not forget is that the characteristic of the site is situated at corner of crossroad. This tell us that oblique axis which connecting entire Munhak cluster is significant element for access of recognition of visitors to the stadium. There are another schedule to be constructed Sunhak stadium oppisite side. Our site should play a role in leading extensive cluster of stadiums as a core.

Interval space making by 2 surfaces directs divers events as meeting nature and culture. The space is a road for entrance from outdoor space as well as promenade to be able to take a walk. In addition, the road in triangle frames play a role as a exhibition corridor to recall history of the stadium and memory, and play a role as a resting deck and observatory to look outside scene, so which is called ‘Blue Corridor�.

The idea of leading cluster of Munhak to a place of community is a Double skin which has triangle pattern like a group of fishes. An inner surface made by polycarbonate and outermost surface, finishing material, which is made by steel triangle structure are bring people in Incheon pride visually. Also, it is a gift that give them diverse pleasures in the stadium and interval space-gap between inner surface and outer surface.

Plan Concept & Develop The main form of the building is an efficient shell layer that shades and protects the program spaces within and also provides renewable energy generation, daylight mediation, natural ventilation, physical movement and digital information display. The protected interior form is independent of the shell to allow for the dynamic movement of visitors throughout the three exhibition levels via ramps that form the interior atrium space linking the ideas of movement, connectivity and speed at various scales of visitor experience.
