Descubriendo a Joan Colom
I was so excited to discover the photographs of Joan Colom. At first I did not know if he was a man or a woman, as Joan to an American is a womans’ name. But after looking at his pictures it became obvious that this was the vision of a man, a man who appreciated beauty and female sexuality. Not in a vulgar high fashion way like Helmut Newton, but in a sympathetic, tender way. A mix of Picasso, Doisneau and Kertesz.
El descubrimiento de las fotografías de Joan Colom fue muy emocionante. En un primer momento no supe si se trataba de un hombre o de una mujer, ya que para un norteamericano Joan es nombre de mujer. Pero después de contemplar sus fotografías resultó obvio que me encontraba ante la visión de un hombre, un hombre que apreciaba la belleza y la sexualidad femeninas. No de un modo vulgar propio de la alta costura, como Helmut Newton, sino de una manera comprensiva y tierna. Una mezcla de Picasso, Doisneau y Kertesz.
Colom is a very humble man. He made pictures for himself, perhaps to share with colleagues. He carefully cropped his prints into a vertical panoramic format, which echoes the narrow but high streets of the Raval where he took many of his finest pictures. His feeling for light and shadow reminds me of Italian Neo-realist films of the same era, especially Fellini. He then carefully mounted them onto black paper and sequenced them into albums.

Colom es una persona humilde. Hacía fotografías para sí mismo, y puede que para compartir con otros colegas. Recortaba sus imágenes cuidadosamente en un formato panorámico vertical, que evocaba las estrechas pero altas calles del Raval, escenario de muchas de sus mejores fotografías. Su sentido del empleo de la luz y las sombras me recuerda a las películas del neorrealismo italiano de esa época, especialmente a Fellini. A continuación

Colom also reminds me of Robert Frank, who often would hold his camera at his waist so as not to distract or antagonize his subjects. And he reminds me of Helen Levitt, who had such an amazing feel for body language. Perhaps when all the self-hype of media stars like William Klein and Araki wear off, a broader audience will then start to appreciate the genius of this quiet man from Barcelona, Joan Colom. las montaba meticulosamente sobre papel negro y las secuenciaba en álbumes. Colom me recuerda también a Robert Frank, que a menudo se sujetaba la cámara a la cintura para no distraer o enfrentarse a sus retratados. Y me recuerda a Helen Levitt, que poseía aquella increíble sensibilidad para el lenguaje corporal. JOAN COLOM
Joan Colom was born in Barcelona in 1921 and it was not until the late age of 36 that he took up photography. It was then in 1957 that Colom joined the Photography Association of Catalonia and learned the core skills of photography. Colom immediately began his great photographic project: photographing the Raval neighborhood, reflecting his interest in the street and people. With these photographs Colom forsook the trend of “artistic virtuosity” or “photographic purity” to seek out more realistic pictures. Joan Colom was awarded the National Photography Prize in 2002 in recognition of the historical value of his career and his personal contribution to Spanish photography. In addition, his photographic series on the Raval has been exhibited on numerous occasions and garnered a great deal of national and international recognition. In 2006, the Laurence Miller Gallery in New York hosted a solo exhibition of his work, and in the same year, the “Raval” travelling exhibition featuring photographs from the Foto Colectania collection toured at the Henri CartierBresson Foundation in Paris, the Museum Folkwang in Essen and the FOAM in Amsterdam. In 2012 Colom donated his entire archive to the National Art Museum of Catalonia, which has just held the Jo faig el carrer (I Work the Street) exhibition, a retrospective which for the first time displayed almost all his work.
Joan Colom nace en Barcelona en el año 1921 y no es hasta la tardía edad de 36 años que se interesa por el mundo de la fotografía. Es en ese mismo momento, en 1957, que Colom ingresa en la Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya y aprende las principales habilidades fotográficas. A partir de ese momento, Colom empieza su gran proyecto fotográfico: fotografiar el barrio del Raval, plasmando su interés por la calle y la gente. Colom abandona con estas fotografías la tendencia del “virtuosismo artístico” o “pureza fotográfica”, buscando una fotografía más realista. Joan Colom fue galardonado con el Premio Nacional de Fotografía en 2002, en reconocimiento al valor histórico de toda su trayectoria y su personal aportación a la fotografía española. Además, su serie fotográfica sobre el barrio del Raval ha sido expuesta en numerosas ocasiones consiguiendo un gran reconocimiento tanto a nivel nacional como internacional. En 2006 la Laurence Miller Gallery de Nueva York realizó una exposición monográfica con su obra y, ese mismo año, se organizó la exposición itinerante “Raval” con fondos procedentes de la colección de Foto Colectania que pudo verse en la Fundación Henri Cartier-Bresson de París, en el Folkwang Museum de Essen y en el FOAM de Ámsterdam. En el 2012 Colom donó su archivo completo al Museo Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, que acaba de organizar la exposición Jo faig el carrer (Yo hago la calle), una retrospectiva en la que se expone por primera vez la práctica totalidad de su obra.
