Since it was established in March 2011 by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, with the presence and blessings of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the ‘Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award’ (HIPA) assumed a steady and confident course of development and progress. Drawing on the inspirations of its founder, HIPA set out on a journey to “build man” by developing and honing his skills and pushing his ambitions to new horizons where excellence and distinction in the field of photography have no limits – at a time when a photograph is the most credible witness to an incident or event, making the written or spoken word redundant. The vision of His Highness the Crown Prince was born from his desire to keep pace with the foresightedness of our wise government that seeks to develop an individual culturally, educationally and professionally, not only within the UAE, but to deliver HIPA’s human and artistic message to the farthest corners of the world. Developing the potential of man in all aspects of culture, national identity, personal inclinations and nurturing his talents in photography is a higher cause, particularly because photography is a widely recognized common denominator between peoples of various cultures. Photography is not only a very important factor in the intellectual and emotional development of man, it is a valuable, established profession – not the least secondary to medical, engineering or IT professions, which despite their importance and independence, cannot dispense with photographs.

Building the man is a primary occupation of our leaders. This is epitomised by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, when he said, “The individual is the basic component of strength; it’s only natural that our primary concern should focus on the individual – none else.” From this single phrase all of HIPA’s strategic goals were generated, which are not limited to UAE nationals – despite placing primary emphasis on them – rather they encompass all citizens of the world. This wider interest was driven by the global status the United Arab Emirates, and the Emirate of Dubai in particular, have attained, whether in social and cultural domains or scientific, economic and sports.

Guided by this global scope, HIPA’s Board of Trustees and work team endeavour to achieve good planning, quality execution and continuous development, day-in day-out, to see HIPA achieving its goals and realising the vision of its founder in assisting a generation of photographic talents turn their ambitions to reality – from this point our higher mission and greater challenge shall commence.

As the curtain begins to fall on the latest chapter of HIPA, I would like to thank you for the memorable moments you gave us through the artistic work you have created. You have blended beauty with fascination. Most of all, it was very clear how much of yourselves you put into your art and the strong bond you established with the objects of your lenses. No doubt, such a bond with one’s work is worth the highest accolades and admiration.

With the help of all photographers, we reached unparalleled heights by shedding light on our fascinating theme “Life in Colour”, where we were brought closer to the true meaning of the message it carried. The various shades of colour that we experienced can teach us more about pluralism and how best we can implement it into our everyday lives in today’s world.

We are here with you and with all the photographers from the 166 countries around the world that contributed all the colours to our 4th season of competition.

Today, as we announce all the winners of our latest season, Life in Colour, we congratulate all those who have participated in the competition, and in turn tell them, be proud of your work; you are all winners and deserve all the success in the world. Since we have come very far, and are edging closer to launching the fifth Season of competition; I salute the HIPA team who enabled such success in such a short space of time. Here, I would like to conclude with a quote from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, Ruler of Dubai, “The impossible: is the largest prison man has built for himself” My sincere wishes to you and to everyone who participated in the ‘Life in Colour’ season, and I wish you continued success in your future adventures.

‫كلمـــــة رئـــيس مجلس أمنــــاء الجــــــائزة‬ Since His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, and patron of HIPA, entrusted us as a Board of Trustees with achieving his vision and goals, we have been in pursuit of globalism under a UAE frame of mind and management through a competition that redesigns the roadmap for the art of photography worldwide. Towards realising this ambitious pursuit, HIPA has already made its mark around the world. After passing rigorous, high-level assessment by a panel of judges with international expertise who are capable of selecting the best photographs after sifting through the tens of thousands of entries received, we bring you the winning photographs from the ‘Life in Colour’ season. In the course of the Fourth Season, launched in March 2014 under the title of “Life in Colour” we have sought to continue promoting HIPA with more vigour and according to a carefully laid plan targeting photographers from all around the world. HIPA also emphasised the importance of working closely with our media partners globally, who have done everything to support initiatives suggested by the board of trustees over the last year. Our global audience also increased over social media and we have placed an added importance on new media as a way to reach our database of photographers.

By organising several exhibitions around the world, HIPA also contributed to raising the confidence and participation levels among the photographers who took part in our previous season, by showcasing their work to a wider international audience. HIPA also organised workshops to boost the knowledge and skill levels of international photographers.

With you we have explored some of the most prominent junctions we had during the course of the “Life in Colour” season – not forgetting the many other milestones, which have not been mentioned for the sake of remaining concise. In summary, we assure you that all our endeavours were met with success, with a total of 30, 878 photographers submitting 60,162 photographs in the ‘Life in Colour’ season, and we still aim for more In the future.

‫تتب ّنى جائزة حمدان بن محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم‬ ‫الدولية للتصوير الضوئي في هذه الدورة وعبر‬ ‫محورها الرئيسي هذا استكشاف روعة الوجود‬ ‫والتبصر في ألوان الحياة‪ .‬ونعني بمحور “الحياة ألوان”‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫األلوان التي نراها من أول يوم نبصر فيه نور الدنيا‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تتكشف يومًا بعد يوم‬ ‫والتفكر بمعانيها الزاخرة‪ ،‬إذ‬ ‫ومفردات جديدة في هذا العالم الشاسع‬ ‫معاني‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫نفس مختصون من‬ ‫بمدلوالته‪ ،‬حيث تمكن علماء‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المفضل لدى المرء وبين‬ ‫تحديد العالقة بين اللون‬ ‫شخصيته وطبيعة إفصاحه عن مكنوناته وصفاته‬ ‫ومزاجه والروح المسيطرة عليه‪ .‬ويوضح هؤالء أن‬ ‫األلوان المحيطة باإلنسان تؤثر بصورة مباشرة على‬ ‫نفسيته وسرعان ما يتحوّ ل هذا التأثير إلى تأثي ٍر‬ ‫عضوي يجعل الجسم قاب ً‬ ‫ال لإلصابة ببعض األمراض‬ ‫التي ُتعرف بأمراض النفس الجسدية‪ ،‬أي تلك التي‬ ‫تتس ّلل إلى الجسد من باب النفس والروح‪ .‬وهنا يأتي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يوظف بحق‬ ‫دور المصور المبدع الذي يعرف كيف‬ ‫التشابه والتضاد بين األلوان‪ ،‬ليخلق صورة أقرب إلى‬ ‫األساطير لكنها تعيش بيننا على أرض الواقع‪ ،‬ليكون‬ ‫سفير الجمال إلى عيون المشاهد عبر عدسته التي‬ ‫ترى ما تراه هو وتنقله لنا بصدق وأمانة طورًا‪ ،‬وتارة‬ ‫منظمة حتى يتهيأ للمشاهد كما لو أن “ڤان‬ ‫بعبثية‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جوغ” أو “رمبرانت” يعرضان أعماال جديدة بعد أن‬ ‫فارقا الحياة إلى الباقية‪.‬‬ ‫ويأخذنا هذا المحور إلى معنى آخر مختلف كليًا‬ ‫إال أنه يتكامل تمامًا مع المعنى األول‪ ،‬وهو حرص‬ ‫المصور على إبراز الحياة بمختلف ألوانها وجوانبها‬ ‫ومواقفها‪ .‬يمكن أن يلتقط المشارك هذا “اللون”‬ ‫من حياتنا اليومية الذي قد ال ينتبه إليه الشخص‬ ‫العادي‪ ،‬لكنه يعتصر وجدان المصور المبدع لينقله‬ ‫إلينا‪ ،‬كما بإمكانه تحدي نفسه والذهاب إلى عوالم‬ ‫أخرى في الجو والبحر ليبرز لنا اختالط النور بأشياء‬ ‫أخرى حولنا‪ ،‬تعكس لنا ألوانًا تجعل من حياتنا‬ ‫كوكبة من األحاسيس الغزيرة‪ .‬وبصرف النظر عن‬ ‫حالتنا حينها‪ ،‬إال أن الحياة بألوانها‪ ،‬قاتمة كانت أم‬ ‫زاهية‪ ،‬لها مذاق خاص بها‪ ،‬وربما ال تستقيم بعض‬ ‫بلون محدد‪.‬‬ ‫أوجهها إال‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫وألن الحديث عن النور وألوانه‪ ،‬نتوقع أن تكون‬ ‫المساحة شاسعة واألرض خصبة ألصحاب العدسات‬ ‫النيّرة ممن عقدوا العزم أال يبرحوا مقاعدهم من‬ ‫دون أن تكون لهم بصمة معنا‪“ ..‬باأللوان”‪.‬‬

Each year, India witnesses an unprecedented wave of vibrancy and colour during Holi, the festival of colours, celebrated throughout the country. The photo could have been restricted to a red and yellow affair, had it not been for the man throwing a handful of blue powder which made all the difference. The seated worshippers in the photograph, seem to be letting the barrage of colours layer them, which adds to the uniqueness of the image.

This photograph was taken in Ki Gompa, a monastery of Tibetan Buddhists in the Indian Himalayas. Every evening, the young monks of the temple are given time off to play in an open area nearby. These young monks, in their richly coloured robes, manifest the true meaning of enthusiasm and cheerfulness, unlike the greyness of the walls behind them.

The rush hour in the sea amid the‬‬ ‫‪excitement of seeing the fire, is indeed a timeless frame.‬‬

The “Photography Appreciation Award” is a special category for a person or group who has shown long-standing commitment to enhancing the art of photography. HIPA hopes to give back a small portion of the respect and appreciation due, by creating a special award which celebrates those who do so much for the field of photography.

Sebastião Salgado was born on 8 February 1944 in Aimorés, Minas Gerais, Brazil. He lives in Paris, France.

Having previously worked as an economist, Salgado began his career as a professional photographer in 1973 in Paris, working with the photo agencies Sygma, Gamma, and Magnum Photos until 1994, when he and Lélia Wanick Salgado, his wife, formed Amazonas images, an organization created exclusively for his work. Salgado has travelled to over 100 countries for his photographic projects. Most of these works, as well as appearing in numerous print publications, have also been presented in books such as Other Americas and Sahell’Homme en Détresse(1986), An Uncertain Grace (1990), Workers (1993), Terra (1997), Migrations and Portraits (2000), and Africa (2007). Touring exhibitions of this work have been, and continue to be, presented throughout the world in leading museums and galleries. In 2004, Salgado began the Genesis project, aiming at presenting the unblemished face of nature and humanity. Genesis consists of a series of landscape and wildlife photographs, as well as photographs of human communities that continue to live in accordance with their ancestral traditions and cultures. This body of work was conceived as a potential path to humanity’s rediscovery of itself in nature. Two books Genesis, published by TASCHEN, with an international distribution, in six languages, came out in 2013. The Genesis exhibition, a touring exhibition was launched simultaneously in several countries in 2013. The exhibition has already been presented in 21 countries.

Since the 1990’s, Salgado and Lélia have also worked on the restoration of a part of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. They succeeded in turning the area into a nature reserve in 1998 and created the Instituto Terra an environmental NGO dedicated to a mission of reforestation, conservation and education.

In 2014, he received the Prize Itaca, from the Facultad Ciencias de la Comunicación, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. Spain. The same year he was honored as “Amigos do Meio Ambiente” (“Friends of the environment”) at the Fifth World Environment Forum, Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, Brazil. Salgado has been awarded numerous major photographic prizes in recognition of his accomplishments. He is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and an honorary member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in the United States. In 2014 he received the insignia of “Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” (“Commander of the Order of the Arts and Litterature”) from the Ministry of Culture and Communication, France. Also in 2014, came out the 109 minute documentary film, « The Salt of the Earth », about Salgado, directed by Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado. Produced by Decia Films. France, Italy, Brazil.

Comprehensive and enjoyable are probably the best words to describe The Digital Photography Book series, by Scott Kelby, who has undisputedly become the best-selling author in the field of photography and one of the most successful in all genres. His book has been translated into several languages, benefitting generations of photographers around the world and in turn making him the perfect candidate for the distinguished HIPA photographic research/report award.

The series, which includes several best-sellers that Scott Kelby had authored or co-authored, were the initial reason why he was given the HIPA photographic research/report award.
