It’s tough to find that moment where you can just push the pause button and take it all in. Amidst the flood of clo thes, pyramids of accessories and the flashes of the camera, there lies that mome nt of stark silence. Standing the re, watching concepts magically materialize into rea lity - the creative concoction of all our heads - it’s quite a surreal feeling. Creating Debutante has been a roller coaster ride. It is the by-product of sleepless nights fueled by caffeine. Breakf asts turned into dinner, herde d in corners of Parisian Cafes. All our toils sum med up to construct a magaz ine true to its core, an inhibited mirror image of the youth of today, a vision etc hed in our minds. It’s a publication that stands out aga inst the clutter of gloss. Keeping in mind the internati onal identity we possess, we scoured through the commotion of upcoming tal ent to provide them with a pla tfo rm worthy of their dexterity. Our fashion mood is one that is unconventiona l and of unique tastes. The Flip Side, our core editoria l, showcases the eccentric sid e of denim - a timeless classic is given a murky twist. We also touch base with the working forces behind sustainable clothing label, Be hno, based in New York, to gau ge how they focus on changing the current fashion scenario. Our beauty section pre sents you with a bevy of organic products apt for you r sun kissed skin. Fresh talent, revolutionary bra nds with unique directions an d powerful style concepts - this is what marks the birth of Debutante. I sincer ely hope that you enjoy our premiere issue as we embark on a journey exhaustiv ely seeking something new and promisin g in the world of fashion and beyond.

There’s an unassuming way to show skin these days without baring it all. Wear your mesh in an all-daring ensemble or in slinky separates. A fun trick is to layer a neon tank top underneath a black mesh vest. Mesh lends a tailored, sophisticated look and is a light breathable fabric for summer that can be worn from day to night. Throw in plexiglass jewelry or a visor for an athletic element to the look.

s r e y a L l a u Unus Inner wear as outerwear has been a recurring trend. Secrets of the wardrobe are now on open display and are the new edgy fashion statements. The key is to blend a tailored base such as a button down shirt with a structured outer layer. There are plenty to choose from: bustiers, bralettes and even lacey crop tops. The trend best stands out with pulled back hair and minimal accessories.

3. “I don’t have a personal style,” claims Yasmina, perched on a chair surrounded by a sea of clothes. “I dress according to my mood.” This statement stands true, as her wardrobe is a carnival of contrasting elements from her affection for flea market finds to vintage Yves Saint Laurent clothing and eccentric sneakers from Adidas. It’s a bohemian style with a tinge of relaxed androgyny. As we explore her wardrobe on a hot summer afternoon, we find ourselves submerged in a fine abundance of Céline, Acne, Prada and Miu Miu, Yasmina’s favorite designers. The young fashion director of website Nowfashion, is a quirky fashionista with a charming smile and head of gorgeous curly locks. Of Spanish and Algerian descent, she studied at the esteemed Chambre Syndicale de la Couture in Paris, and later worked with design house Diane Von Furstenburg in New York and L’Officiel magazine. Today, she is dressed in a delicate black lace dress, which she purchased from a local boutique from her recent visit to California. She accents the dress with a richly embroidered fringed scarf and cerulean cowboy boots. Debutante asked her to fish out all her favorite pieces that have stayed true to her style over the years and why she loves them!

The Sister Act
Behno Fall/Winter 2015
Style and sustainability, a curious paradox. Debutante met with ‘Behno’, a revolutionary label hopeful to change the fleeting fashion climate. Shivam Punjya, CEO and Ashley Austin, chief designer shed some light on their break-through initiative. / TM p/ 27
In a world where “more is more” and an armload of glossy shopping bags resemble an everyday accessory, there’s one brand about to revolutionize our tastes in fashion. Behno, which literally means ‘sisters’ in Hindi, is a women’s ready-to-wear label launched in 2012. The brand distinguishes itself by a style that marries hand crafted Indian fabrics with western silhouettes. However, what makes Behno really special is their conscience: their ability to provide a nurturing working environment and health benefits for their workers in rural India. In wake of the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh, Behno, along with their partner MSA, a non profit organization, aim for sustainable fashion, creating international awareness with a local impact. The fabrics are thus manufactured in India by a compact team of skilled women and the designs are later materialized in New York, where the company has an atelier. Although a fascinating work system, it seems to be a challenging task to run a label in two extreme pockets of the world. “We chose New York because it was important for us to be situated within the right landscape for our customer,” explains Ashley Austin, Behno’s American chief designer. “There is something about New York that I can’t really describe, the city is a constant source of inspiration, there’s always something to do, somewhere to go, something to learn, someone to meet.” The designs are then communicated via email back to the brand’s factory in Gujarat. There is great attention to detail paid in transition between the two bases to develop a beautiful final product. India possesses a rich cultural heritage replete with a bounty of local textiles, while New York is a fashion melting pot with a strong background for unique style and a home to several design legions. These two diverse sources have been successfully combined to produce something innovative and desirable, all backed by a cause. It is this meeting point between American design and Indian production that clearly appeals to the customers. Behno’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection, which draws inspiration from Swiss architect Le Corbusier’s interpretation of the city of Chandigarh, has received an enthusiastic response, especially in the Indian market. The most respected professionals in the industry praised the garments and the brand has been featured in various esteemed fashion publications, including Vogue India. Bandana Tewari, Vogue’s fashion features director, proves to be an avid supporter of Behno and is instrumental in spreading awareness about the garment industry in rural India. Behno’s design aesthetic is a little surprising for a ‘Made in India’ brand, as there are no typical Indian silhouettes or motifs used in the designs, instead they have a more western appeal. The company’s founder Shivam Punjya explains: “I love and look forward to seeing the innovative ways in which Indian fashion evolves. That said, I think there’s another side of ‘made in
Ashley Austin, Chief Designer
Shivam Ponjya, CEO
India’ that doesn’t possibly get the same level of recognition: the tailored, minimal and modern side. I’ve seen it and I know it’s there, but for us, it’s about elevating and augmenting that perception. Since Behno’s inception, that has always been a critical component of the brand.” But Behno doesn’t just stop at making beautiful garments. As a brand with integrity and personality, they proudly showcase their hard work and skilled labor of the garment makers behind the gorgeous creations. The label strictly adheres to international safety and wage compliances. A ‘third space’ is created for the garment workers where they can feel safe and a part of a larger community. In a current fashion sphere highly involved with fast fashion, cultivating the tastes of the young consumers to choose otherwise can be quite a challenging task. However, Shivam is optimistic: “Young consumers have a vast world of knowledge at their finger tips through the power of social media and technology. The millennial generation is extremely socially conscious and bases their decision making on facts. In terms of changing consumption behavior, I’d like to encourage everyone to take a step back and ask himself or herself: ‘where do my clothes come from, and who made them?’ There are some very massive campaigns, like Fashion Revolution, going around that aim to do precisely this or to prompt consumers to look at fashion in a different light. I think it’s a matter of educating ourselves about the back end of fashion that is seldom seen.” Behno thus pioneers this refreshing transparency in the world of fashion, a rare phenomenon, but one that should definitely be adopted by all brands on some level. They attest to be a brand with not just a mind, but also a soul. Each garment instills a moment of joy for two women: the wearer and the maker, both equally powerful and talented. This is a brand that takes a step forward to change the fashion scenario of the future to a happier one. “Sustainability will have to become the future of fashion. I’m hopeful that over time, consumerism changes with consumers choosing quality over quantity and investing in garments that they love. With the current pace of consumption, today’s practices are not sustainable. I’m hopeful for change, though. We have to be,” Shivam concludes. p/ 28
The collection resonates modernism with a touch of traditional values. The fine lines and geometric shapes of the silhouette can be viewed through the use of boxy wool coats and knit jacquards. The subtle tailoring stands out in a color palette of lavender, ivory and grey.

Fashion is everywhere, no matter what city, town or country you live in. Lately, fashion blogs have been popping up across the world, even if the location isn’t widely known for fashion. From California to London and over to Norway, we’ve interviewed three influential fashion blogs with their own personal niche and an established international fan base. / JM

followed by Norwegians for nearly 10 years.
Tine Andrea, of TheFashionEaters, launched her blog in 2006 and is now extremely popular amongst her Norwegian community, as well as in other parts of the world. Aside from blogging, she has interests in music, art and interior design and finds inspiration in every aspect of her daily life. Tine, now 25-years-old, works as a fashion writer and stylist. Tine Andrea
Debutante: How did you end up getting to where you are today? T.A.: I first started blogging when I was 16 years old. After a couple of years, my blog became really big in Norway, but it got a little overwhelming and I was not at a place in life where I could handle the work that came with it. I took a break when I was around 20 years old and started it up again at age 23 with new motivation and energy! And now I just love it. D: Where are you and Fashioneaters currently based? T.A.: I am based in Norway, in a town called Trondheim. Beautiful rivers, art and incredible architecture surround Trondheim. I find inspiration everywhere I go! D: If you had to choose a favorite garment in your closet (or two!) what would it be? T.A.: It has to be my black blazer from Hugo Boss because it works with everything. And my blue oversized shirt from Ralph Lauren. Love the classics! D: Where do you get your inspiration for your personal style and for the topics you write about? T.A.: Oh, everywhere! Blogs, fashion sites, art, at the streets, on the runway or just from music! Wherever you turn there is inspiration! You just have to look closely. D: As a stylist, do you have a favorite memory or collaboration from when you were styling for a company (or photographer/designer/etc.)? T.A.: Yes! I had a styling collaboration with a famous Norwegian artist it was so cool! With bear paws, leather and faux fur it turned out to be really different and fun! D: Who is your favorite designer and why? T.A.: I really like Vivienne Westwood for her raw designs and creativity, but one designer I adore and will always have a little crush on is Nicolas Ghesquière. He is a genius in both tailoring and creativity. D: If you had one piece of advice to give a 20-something year old, it would be: T.A.: A life without exploring the world is like reading a book with only one page! Never forget to broaden your horizon, because inspiration can be just around the corner!

Victoria Villasana
From one side of the world to the other... Style Marmalade influences cultures everywhere. Born in Mexico and now based in London, Victoria Villasana started sharing her love for art, fashion, and adventure in 2011 through her blog, Style Marmalade. It is not only a fashion and style blog, but it also covers topics ranging from original D.I.Y projects to important social causes, such as femininity and religion. where she voices her opinion and stands true to what she believes in. What started as a hobby soon developed into a successful career of raising awareness as well as projecting her personality, creativity, and beliefs on to the world and her fans. Debutante: How did you end up getting to where you are today? V.V.: It all started only as a hobby, but the blog began to develop with time. From the beginning I didn’t want to rush into making it an overnight success. I didn’t have a plan or a marketing strategy. In my eyes, I’m just sharing what I like and what I do. The blog opened so many doors workwise and I’m glad I can do a combination of things for a living, especially since it suits my personality.
Debutante: I love that your blog isn’t fully based on fashion; you talk about art, feminism, and D.I.Y. Can you tell us what your biggest passion is? V.V.: When it comes to blogging, one of the most important aspects is finding your niche, but I have to say that I really struggle with that. I’m interested in so many things that it’s difficult to find only one topic. I love art and culture, but I’m also really interested in personal style, food, philosophy, social causes, etc. I’ve always been a very curious person. p/ 32
Debutante Fres h Ta len t Debutante: Where do you get the inspiration for your personal style and for the topics you write about? V.V.: It comes out of a feeling of curiosity. The best thing for me is when I walk because I like to observe the world around me and when I move I feel more connected with everything and ideas start to flow easily. I also enjoy reading a lot of books and magazines about different topics. I’m a very visual person so I express myself through style. Personal style is so important, but it is never about trends, it comes from a deeper feeling of wanting to express who you are through your appearance. Debutante: Your DIY projects range from Lego Rings to a Bath Mat Clutch Bag (so creative, by the way!) – what would you say has been your favorite DIY project so far? V.V.: I enjoyed all my DIY’s. I have a lot of fun when I make them and most of them don’t require tremendous skill or craftsmanship, so everybody can do it! I actually wear them a lot and I like the reactions I get from people. ‘The Protest Jumper” was one of my favorites, I painted the words ‘FREE PALESTINE’ all over the jumper. When I wear it online or on the streets, it always initiates conversation and people ask questions. I don’t want just to provoke people but I can’t just sit in my comfortable house and write about pretty shoes and dresses. We need to remember that there are a lot of people in the world today lacking the most basics of human rights and we should do whatever it is in our hands to change that. Perhaps a silly jumper won’t change that but it’s a reminder of change and the change starts within! Debutante: Feminism has a lot of meanings in today’s society. What is your viewpoint on it? V.V.: Feminism is about supporting and empowering women. We should encourage one another to follow what makes us
p/ 33
happy and remain different from one woman to the next. It’s not about hating men either; it is about allowing women and men to be equallystrong and sensitive without imposing gender stereotypes. Debutante: If you had one piece of advice to give a 20-something year old, it would be: V.V.: Stay focused, work hard and don’t be scared to ask questions. Don’t wait for the opportunity to arrive or “the perfect moment”, make your own way and don’t find excuses, just take action NOW and roll with it - volunteer, intern, connect, read - stay hungry, positive, curious, and most importantly stay passionate about life. Don’t settle for anything less than you deserve.
Kathleen Ensign
A walk through the bay area with Kathleen of
KatWalksSF
Blogger and business owner Kathleen Ensign, of KatWalksSF, found inspiration to start her blog when she figured out her personal style during Paris Fashion Week in 2012. She’s been part of the retail industry for over 10 years devoting her life into fashion. Aside from her style sense, she uses her lifestyle brand, Les Mechantes, as a way to give back to the community by giving proceeds of sales to different nonprofit organizations each quarter. Debutante: How did you end up getting to where you are today? K.E.: I started my blog in October 2012 in Paris. I was traveling there for fashion week with my best friend, and now business partner, Ashley. I had spent months shopping for my ‘look’ and decided to document it. The first pictures are pretty scary and far from what the blog looks like now! Debutante: Your lifestyle brand Les Mechantes, are all products made in the US and gives back to different nonprofit organizations. What made you decide to launch this brand? K.E.: After almost 12 years with Gap I was ready for a major change. I have always loved fashion and was ready to curate my own collection. We played around with several different concepts and at one point thought about incorporating new up and coming French designers. In the end, we decided to stick with our community and focus on locally sourced and manufactured products. Working with different nonprofits was a must for LM. Our first was the American University of Nigeria because my aunt is the president and has played a huge part in empowering education for women. Debutante: What’s the best part about living in San Francisco? Do you think you’ll end up moving anywhere else? K.E.: I will never leave San Francisco! I love everything about it. The food, the people, the energy - I will never leave! Debutante: Who has been your biggest style inspiration? K.E.: I am always inspired by fashion history and advanced style. I do not follow the trends, even though I love attending fashion shows. I love looking at what the fashionable ladies of the 80’s were wearing!
Debutante: If you had one piece of advice to give to a 20-something year old, it would be: K.E.: Wear sunscreen! You’ll thank yourself in the future.

At the age of 28, this British designer founded her eponymous luxury footwear label, which produces some hard-to-miss confections. As a graduate from Cordwainer’s College, Webster, previously mentored by the ingenious Nicholas Kirkwood, produced her first collection in 2012. Colorful and quirky, served up with a dollop of pizazz, is the best way to describe Webster’s designs. What make her shoes a knockout are the funky juxtapositions of neon colors with tribal prints. Her distinctive footwear in pop shades is a hot favorite amongst celebrities, such as Rihanna, and fashion mavens like Anna Dello Russo.

Remove Facial Hair
Reduce Dark Circles
Acne Be Gone!
Unwanted Wrinkles
Burnt Skin Treatment
All women have some hair growth on their face whether it’s minor or noticeable. It becomes a problem when it becomes too abundant in unwanted places. Traditionally, women in many Indian homes use a mix of flour with turmeric as a scrub to get rid of the unwanted hairs. What to do: Mix equal amounts of flour and turmeric and add a little water to make a thick paste. Apply to the problematic part of the face, leave on until it dries totally and then dip a cloth in warm water to rub it off. Voila! You will find that along with the mixture, the strands of hair are also removed.
Dark circles under eyes are not ideal for anyone. Not only do they make you look tired, but they also make you appear ages older than you are. The solution to this is to apply a paste of buttermilk and turmeric under the eyes. Buttermilk is a rich source of probiotics and lactic acid, which can exfoliate skin to give it radiance. The acidic properties of buttermilk can cure discoloration under the eyes. What to do: Mix both the ingredients to make a paste and apply it to your dark circles for 15-20 minutes, then wash off with warm water.
Sick of spending so much money on supposed acne treatments? Lemon juice is your answer. Trying a little lemon juice remedy may be helpful for those with mild blemishes since it’s a citric acid and very rich in vitamin C, which has many benefits for all skin types. The citric acid acts to exfoliate the skin and is a natural skin whitener, which helps in reducing redness. It’s also an astringent that dries the blemish itself. How to: Dab cotton ball in the lemon juice and apply it directly to the blemishes overnight.
No matter what your skin type is, rose water has many benefits for women of all ages: it can help sooth and cool the sensitive and irritated areas, balance and cleanse oily skin, rejuvenate, soften and tone the mature skin, and revitalize and add a beautiful glow to normal skin. Rose water is filled with anti-oxidants and various vitamins and can help prevent the signs of aging. How to do it: Apply rose water on your face every night before going to bed. Do not wash it off until the morning.
Burnt from the summer’s sun? Don’t worry, this at home remedy will save you! Plain Greek yogurt contains an abundance of probiotics and enzymes that help heal the skin by restoring its natural barrier. If you find yourself sunburnt from a summer day, this trick will help you recover faster! What to do: Apply the yogurt on your skin for around 30 minutes. Repeat 3 times on the day the burn occurred.

Organic In today’s society, the decision to eat only organic food has become essential for an overall a healthy lifestyle. People are seeking for more and more ways to escape the harmful chemicals altering the community’s well-being. However, women often forget about the chemicals and toxins we absorb while we put our creams and lipsticks on. So why not also make the switch to organic beauty products? But with today’s wide abundance of products and growing market, many brands claim they only use natural ingredients, but it is hard to find those we can really trust. Questions of what brands to use and which to stay away from can thus arise. No need to worry! At Debutante, we’ve done a little research to help you choose the right organic products. You can be sure that no toxins will invade your skin while you use them! / JT

h s e off the Beach
r F
We all know that beach hair is the ‘it’ hairstyle for summer no matter where you’re going. Sometimes we find ourselves fresh off the beach contemplating whether or not to wash our hair before going out that night. You can’t blame us though! The hairstyle’s flirty sea-salted waves and soft volume is meant for more than just the beach. There is a mutual understanding between women that when it’s hot outside, we don’t want to waste time perfecting our hair when we know humidity is only going to destroy it. Although, instead of settling for unwashed hair, what if there was a way to rock this effortless natural-looking hairdo without stepping foot on the sand or using a hair iron? You can still achieve that fresh off the beach surfer look in a matter of minutes without all the hassle. Don’t give up on the summer beach hair trend just yet! Debutante is sharing their secret to creating the ‘it’ hairstyle of the summer through a simple DIY project. Head to your kitchen – we’ve got work to do! / NS

Garments by Adjoa Phillips, Master of Contemporary Design student
What you need:
1 spray bottle 1 tbsp. salt ½ tbsp. hair conditioner (recommended: with coconut aroma to obtain the ideal beach fragrance) ½ tbsp. hair gel
What to do:
Fill the spray bottle with 8 ounces of water – the hotter the better! Mix in the rest of the ingredients. Close and shake the bottle until thoroughly blended (do this before each use).
How to use:
Apply the product on wet hair while squeezing and twisting pieces to create a natural and wavy appearance. Allow time to air dry or use hair dryer if desired.
The trick:
The secret for this hairstyle is the salt (obviously) as well as the conditioner, which helps counteract dryness and keeps your hair feeling soft.
This DIY is no secret to surfers and shore lovers everywhere. We’ve also put it to the test and must say it (almost) looks better than real beach hair! Although it’s extremely easy to make this spray, there’s also a similar product that can give you the same look: the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray (27 Euro), which is recommended by professionals like Leandra Medine and Caroline Trentini. Now you’re ready to take on the summer with a fresh off the beach style!
