Although ephemeral, sand sculptures are a sensational work of art. I find these creations to be stunning and striking for its onlookers. The subject of sand is unique. Unless you live near a beach most people, like me, do not get to experience the shores until vacation. Sand is made from tiny grains of rocks and minerals. It can also be tiny particles of the shells of sea creatures. Some sand comes from the calcium (a mineral) in seaweed. Sand can be different colors. That’s because shells, rocks, and minerals are different colors. Sand on beaches can be black, white, brown, green, yellow, or even pink! Sand Sculptors recreate times in history in a fun untouchable way! I and I call it imagination on wheels. It’s Intriguing how realistic and detailed these fruits become once created. It’s a shame when they become destroyed by unappreciative delinquents of society. My favorite sculpture would have to be the kissing and hugging trees. :) Sand is made when rocks or shells break into tiny pieces. Over time, rock is broken down by water, wind, and ice. It takes thousands or millions of years to create sand. Wind, water (rain), ice, and even the process of freezing and thawing work on mountains. Pieces of rock break off the mountain. These pieces fall because of gravity. Water and wind may carry them far away ..... Ode to public art. ∆

Sand Sculptures by Sudarsan Pattnaik

As an impoverished child, Sudarsan Pattnaik would go to his local beach and build sand castles. Little did the youngster from Orrisa, India, realize his hobby would make him famous and wealthy. Experience some of the sand sculptures carved by Pattnaik. ∆

He says that people gather round to watch him create sand sculptures on the beach at Puri. Encouraged by the interest of passers-by, Pattnaik would go to the beach everyday for three hours each in the morning and evening.

He has since won prizes at international sand sculpture festivals around the world.

His works are mostly based on current world issues, ranging from climate change to world peace.

“For last two years, everywhere I heard about the issues of global warming and climate change, so I started working on these issues,” he said. He has produced several sand sculptures of US President Barack Obama. On November 2, 2008, he made a sand sculpture of US presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama.

The Breathtaking Art of Giant Sand Sculptures Parksville Sand Sculpture Contest For many, sand is the perfect media for expressing their art as sculptures, and some of these are truly mind-blowing in their complexity. Sand art is the practice of modeling sand into an artistic form, such as a sand sculpture. The two basic building ingredients, sand and water are available in abundance on a beach. Tidal beaches generally have sand that limits height and structure because of the shape of the sand grains. Good sand sculpture sand is somewhat dirty, having silt and clay elements that help lock the irregular shaped sand grains together. Sculptors have a real gift for the creation of awesome structures, though they obviously know how impermanent these can be. Sand sculpting as an art form has become very popular in recent years especially in coastal beach areas. Hundreds of annual competitions are held all over the world. Some sand castle artists are purists, using no artificial materials or heavy machinery. However, in sand sculpting competitions, the rules often require that the finished sculpture be sprayed with a stabilizing coating that preserves it and allows the work to be properly judged and enjoyed by spectators. The detail achieved in some of these works is truly incredible. There is fierce competition among sand sculptors for recognition, and the time and patience required for many of these superb structures almost begs belief, but there is no doubt whatsoever that the end results are well worth all the effort.

Why Are They Called Sandals?

The word sandal derives from the Greek word sandalon. The ancient Greeks distinguished between baxeae (sing. baxea), a sandal made of willow leaves, twigs, or fibres worn by comic actors and philosophers; and the cothurnus, a boot sandal that rose above the middle of the leg, worn principally by tragic actors, horsemen, hunters, and by men of rank and authority. The sole of the latter was sometimes made much thicker than usual by the insertion of slices of cork, so as to add to the stature of the wearer. The ancient Egyptians wore sandals made of palm-leaves and papyrus. They are sometimes observable on the feet of Egyptian statues. According to Herodotus, sandals of papyrus were a part of the required and characteristic dress of the Egyptian priests. ∆

History If you ever sat by the sea and molded the sand into towers and walls, creating a sand castle, you are certainly not alone. The art of sand castle building began a very long time ago, though documented starts about 500 years ago. The history of sand castles is something hard to rigidly define. Many sources begin by referring to the time of Ancient Egypt, when the Egyptians used sand models to outline the design of pyramids before actual construction began. Actual documentation of the art doesn’t begin though until the 16th century, and even then evidence is still rather light. The art of building sand sculptures really gains momentum though in the late 19th century. One of the earliest documented accounts comes from a man named Philip McCord, who created a sand sculpture of a woman and a baby in 1897 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He did it as a means to make money, which is where a lot of the documentation comes from. In the 1970s, Todd VanderPluym and Gerry Kirk (both avid sand sculptors) created Sand Sculptors International. It is an organization that sets the standards for the art form.

11

Sand castle construction consists of two main ingredients, sand and water. The design possibilities are endless, seeing as how a lot of it relies on the mixture of imagination and creativity.

However, there are generally two types of sand castles. One form is the “typical” sand castle, consisting of some kind of base with some kind of tower, or towers, on top. The other form is the “drip” sand castle, which is a when very wet sand is dripped on top of other wet sand and creates a tower of sand globs. A variety of different construction techniques can also be used when building a sand castle. Other techniques that can be included within the design include moats, tunnels and bridges. Events surrounding sand castles began around the late 19th century. The earliest account is that of James Taylor, a man in New Jersey who built a variety of sand sculptures while visitors would give him money. Some individuals have perfected the art so much so that they have been deemed “professional sculptors.” Scott Herel is a two-time North American Sculpting Champion. Karen Fralich is also a professional sculptor and has been sculpting sand for 14 years. She has competed in 65 contests and is a three-time World Champion as well as a three-time North American Champion.∆

Beaded Beauties

Do It Yourself!

What You’ll Need Sand White glue Spoon Empty, cleaned plastic butter tub Nail Foam tray Markers Tiny seeds or glitter Yarn Tape

What To Do: Mix sand and glue together in the butter tub to make sand dough. Make enough dough to roll a number of beads in the size you want. With the nail, poke a hole through the center of each bead. If the dough is too soft to make a hole, add more sand until it is stiff enough support a hole through the bead. Make lots of beads, then let them dry on a foam tray until they are hard. When the beads have dried, decorate them by coloring them with markers or gluing tiny seeds or bits of glitter to them. To make a necklace, tape one end of a piece of yarn (long enough for a necklace) to the table, and string the beads onto it. Tie the two ends of the yarn together when you’ve strung all your beads. Be careful, or you might just end up with a new hobby! ∆

These beaded beauties are made simply of sand. This particular way of making beads was created by African women, and if you visit that continent, you’re likely to see all kinds of sand-bead jewelry being worn. With these directions, however, you can make your own sand beads right at home.

Sand Sculptors International SSI is the world’s leading sand sculpture company, creating captivating works of art for a broad range of clients and functions.

Todd Vander Pluym Todd Vander Pluym, president of Sand Sculptors International (SSI), is the world’s premier sand sculptor. For over 20 years, he and his team of professional and master sculptors have crafted more than 1,600 sculptures around the globe, from a collage of African wildlife in South Africa to a 37-foot-tall “Sleeping Beauty’s Castle” on the beach in Kamaishi, Japan. SSI holds nearly 200 sand sculpting titles, including four world championships. Over the years, Todd’s work has been featured in major newspapers and magazines, such as The Los Angeles Times, People and the Smithsonian Magazine, and on many television shows, including The Today Show and Good Morning America. Todd grew up along the shores of Southern California, where he built his first castle at the age of 4. He was trained as an architect and owned an architectural business, but sand sculpting was his first love and became his choice of professions. In 1980, he started Sand Sculptors International, based in Redondo Beach, Calif., to pursue the art full time.

15

Business/Trade In the book The Art of Sandcastling, author Ted Siebert writes that Todd is one of the brightest stars in the field: “His sculptures have been admired on every continent except Antarctica. Todd is the winner of hundreds of competitions, organizer of several world-record events, and builder of exhibitions in almost every developed country. Todd is the closest thing to a guru in sand castling today. Together with his Sand Sculptors International team, Todd has been an ambassador for sand castling, opening doors for the immense potential of this relatively new form.” Indeed, Todd invented many of the techniques and methods (such as the use of wooden forms for pound-up) used today by sand sculptors around the world. These days, the SSI sculptors travel the world sculpting sand. Despite the image, sand sculpture is by no means confined to the beach. SSI creates dazzling sculptures in the middle of shopping malls, where business sometimes quadruples during and after his projects. Without fail, SSI’s sculptures draw news coverage that save businesses thousands of dollars in advertising efforts. ∆

Arts & Crafts

Creating Sand Art was always a task that I remember as a child. At the time I and I was always allowed the freedom of picking colors and chosing patterns, which is why my sisters and me kept recreating. This is definitely an art that will forever be upheld close to my heart. It is such a great feeling to know that this special craft is still being taking place. Sand Art is inexpensive and an expression of individual personality. The craft brings people together to exchange beautiful creations. Sand Art remains the same; free and creative. Spirituality

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was one only. This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord, “You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?” The Lord replied, “The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you.” Mary Stevenson, 1936

Matthew 7:24-27 New International Version (NIV) The Wise and Foolish Builders 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” ∆ 21

“The sand in the hourglass runs from one compartment to the other, marking the passage of moments with something constant and tangible. If you watch the flowing sand, you might see time itself riding the granules. Contrary to popular opinion, time is not an old white-haired man, but a laughing child. And time sings. ∆ Vera Nazarian

Nature

White Sands National Monument New Mexico

Like No Place Else on Earth Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world’s great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Here, dunes have engulfed 275 square miles of desert creating the world’s largest gypsum dunefield. White Sands National Monument preserves this dunefield, along with the plants and animals that have adapted to this constantly changing environment.

Did You Know? The gypsum that makes up the white sands starts out as clear, translucent sand grains. As the wind bounces the sand grains along the ground, they collide and scratch each other. The scratches change the way light reflects off the grains, making the sand appear white. Did You Know? Because there is virtually no fresh water within the white sands dune field, animals that live in the dunes must get almost all their water solely from the food they eat. Desert animals have evolved many ways of conserving moisture. The kangaroo rat eats only dry seeds and never drinks water.

Sand Castles Made of Sand

Down the street you can hear her scream you’re a disgrace As she slams the door in his drunken face And now he stands outside And all the neighbors start to gossip and drool He cries oh, girl you must be mad, What happened to the sweet love you and me had? Against the door he leans and starts a scene, And his tears fall and burn the garden green And so castles made of sand fall in the sea, eventually A little Indian brave who before he was ten, Played war games in the woods with his Indian friends And he built up a dream that when he grew up He would be a fearless warrior Indian Chief Many moons past and more the dream grew strong until Tomorrow he would sing his first war song and fight his first battle But something went wrong, surprise attack killed him in his sleep that night And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually There was a young girl, who’s heart was a frown Cause she was crippled for life, And she couldn’t speak a sound And she wished and prayed she could stop living, So she decided to die She drew her wheelchair to the edge of the shore And to her legs she smiled you wont hurt me no more But then a sight she’d never seen made her jump and say Look a golden winged ship is passing my way And it really didn’t have to stop, it just kept on going... And so castles made of sand slips into the sea, eventually
