New Leadership Key Clubbers, how are you feeling?!?! Welcome to another Astonishing Key Club Year. If you are reading this, you are a part of the premier division in the Caribbean, Division II of the Jamaica District. You are a part of a family, of leaders who commit their efforts to serve, providing aid, and having intense fun. You are about to adopt your own mentor or mentee. You are about to engage into a journey you will never expect, nor forget. You are a part of the Astonishing Division II. This year will be one like no other. We have never had access to so many resources and opportunities. There is only one piece missing, YOU. This year not only continues our commitment to service, meeting people and extensive fun, but more defined opportunities to lead and mentor our upcoming ServiceLeadership-Programs (SLPs - i.e. our

Builder's Club and K-Kids, the younger part of our family). With our advances in technology, our endeavors will be more effective and social. A Reminder however, the only thing that guarantees your membership is to PAY YOUR INTERNATIONAL DUES when the time comes around in September. Monthly Reporting Tips! Try to fill out all cells in the report. A common practice by many secretaries is to leave cells empty if it doesn’t apply to you. However, it is only proper reporting etiquette that, if fields don’t apply to a club, you use “N/A”, a dash, a zero, etc. Use attachments! We are all aware that the PDF file used to send in the monthly report is very limited in space. To go around this, an easy option is to add attachments. This is where you can exaggerate on matters left brief in the actual report. Add a Financial Report! Financial reports allow for club transparency. Each month, there are instances where expenses come up which aren’t questioned on the report. To avoid your Lt. G or another District Administrator asking about the miscellaneous expense, include the financial report which would provide the details needed.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE! THE ELIMINATE PROJECT With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Neonatal tetanus kills one baby every nine minutes— nearly 60,000 newborn children every year. A significant number of women also die due to maternal tetanus. The effects of the disease are excruciating— tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.
What is MNT? In 39 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating—tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too.
SERVICE To eliminate MNT from the Earth, 129 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take $110 million—and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family. Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Now, together, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. In doing so, the project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care. The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.

Who suffers from MNT? MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

Can MNT be stopped? Yes! MNT is highly preventable. Just three doses of a 60-cent immunization protect mothers, who then pass on the immunity to their future babies. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease. Why hasn’t MNT been eliminated already? UNICEF has helped to successfully eliminate MNT in many countries. But in 39 countries, it still strikes babies and mothers who have little or no access to health care—either because they are poor, live in remote areas or are caught in humanitarian emergencies. More funds and resources are needed to reach all babies and mothers at risk.

Club Spotlight: Wolmer’s Trust Wolmer's can boast of being the oldest school in the Caribbean having been founded in 1729. This was the day John Wolmer made his last will and testament, leaving the bulk of his estate for the foundation of a free school in the parish of his death. There were some delays in giving effect to Wolmer's will but, after many amendments and conferences between the House of Assembly and the Council, a law was passed and in 1736 the Wolmer's Trust, which would manage the affairs of the school, was established. The law that established the Wolmer's school made no
distinction in respect of colour, class or creed of the students, nor was there discrimination between boys and girls. In 1782, there were 64 boys and 15 girls on roll and the staff consisted of a Chief Master; a writing master and accountant; a teacher of mathematics and a teacher of the French and Spanish languages. The Wolmer's school was originally situated in downtown Kingston at what is still known as the Wolmer's Yard, now a parking lot and vendors' arcade beside the Kingston Parish Church. In 1896, the schools were separated and independent
heads appointed for the Boys' and Girls' schools. After the 1907 earthquake, when most of the school buildings were destroyed, the schools were relocated to its present site, north of Race Course or what is now the National Heroes Park. Although neither schools have old Key Club chapters, both have established and maintained a level of success that makes them competitive and a force to be reckoned with.
