THE CLIENT Five Rivers Environmental are specialists in ecological contracting including ecological mitigation works, habitat creation and habitat management. They had been awarded the contract for ecological mitigation on several ancient woodlands as part of the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail link construction between London and Birmingham.

had already attempted to create connectivity for each site but had quickly recognised that 3G and LTE (4G) coverage was poor and 5G coverage was close to zero right where they needed it. Five Rivers engaged Fli-Fi to provide them with sufficient internet connectivity and WiFi on each site to meet their requirements and ensure they could operate effectively.

THE REQUIREMENTS

THE CHALLENGES

Each of the three rural compounds required connection speeds capable of supporting between 20-100 users. These being spread across multiple metal cabins and large external marquees with laptops, desktops, video conferencing units, phones, printers and CCTV.

The sites were extremely rural and specifically in areas where large numbers of people do not normally congregate or require connectivity so the method of providing the connection was the initial concern.

With an ever changing site, new cabins, new marquees, more workers and welfare areas appearing and disappearing each week the means for providing each user with an assured connection would be difficult as there was no certainty over the location of each of unit for anything more than a few days and total flexibility was key.

reach into all areas where coverage was required. All of our APs were capable of meshing, to allow them to act as repeaters especially important with so many moves going on, it required minimal intervention from the engineers to remotely adjust the network to suit.

After initial surveys of each site, we recognised that with the right hardware we would be able to balance connectivity across multiple LTE (4G) networks on each site. With masts put up in key areas, omnidirectional and boosted directional antenna, high LTE grade routers and point to point links stretching the capability to all corners of each compound we were able to obtain the desired speeds.

This connectivity was joined up with our network hardware for hard wired equipment, VoIP phones, and fully cloud managed intelligent wireless access points (APs), to ensure a wide

Daily and weekly usage reports automatically were generated and emailed to the core management team along with support available at the end of the phone during their key working hours.

CASE STUDY

ADDITIONAL Having shown our ability to be flexible and willing to take on any challenge, we were asked by Five Rivers to help them create a solution for closely monitoring a Tawny Owl nest, live streaming close up footage from an area with no power, no connectivity and a 150m exclusion zone around it.

We created a solar powered, selfsupporting unit capable of streaming live footage from dense woodland, 20m up in a tree with multiple online feeds for stakeholders to view at any time.

As a result of the success of this unit, Five Rivers put the solution forward for the HS2 Golden Newt Award which is awarded for ecological ingenuity across the HS2 Project.
