From Your Editor... Welcome to the eighth New Bridge Polo & Country Club magazine! I am proud to announce that the 2019-2020 edition was awarded two silver ADDYs® – which means the magazine has won six ADDYs® over the past three years. Last year’s edition was also awarded first place in American Horse Publication’s Equine Media Awards among national equestrian publications. What an honor and an accomplishment! This year’s edition explores some of the similarities between the equestrian cultures of Aiken and Argentina. I hope you enjoy the journey. Thank you to the contributors and advertisers who share the vision for this very special magazine. Most of all, thank you to our readers who share our passion for everything equestrian. Join me in celebrating polo at New Bridge!

She has experience in public relations, writing, advertising, promotion and event management. Katie enjoys competing in dressage with her mare Taiga, as well as training her dogs Maximus and Sammi. The sequel, Suddenly Southern, from Stilettos to Snakeboots, is coming out in spring 2021. Marianne can be reached at yost@theaikeninn.com. CONTRIBUTORS, Elissa Lumley & Courtney Morse are natives of California who met in New York over their shared love of horses and passion for riding. This year marks a special occasion for New Bridge Polo & Country Club as we celebrate our 20th anniversary. As I reflect upon the many memories I’ve made here, I am reminded that this club has been a big part of my life and holds a special place in my heart. I purchased this land not intending to build a polo club and a community — rather as a place to turn out my polo ponies. The tract was wooded, mostly with pine trees. My teammate and partner, Matias Magrini and I had some areas of small pines timbered to build fields 1, 2 and 3. I wanted these fields to be everything I had ever dreamed of; consistent footing across every inch, wide open spaces on the sides and endzones, the best turf to play on and the most beautiful fields anyone had seen.

Ariel photo of Field #1, under construction

“A polo handicap is your passport to the world,” said Winston Churchill. Polo also allowed me to travel. Matias took me to Clubhouse on Field #1, today Argentina, where I saw that polo clubs are gated for security and residents live field side, experiencing the polo lifestyle daily, including post-match asados. It was different than anything I had seen in the United States. The concept for New Bridge was born. I wanted to emulate the camaraderie, the organic, wholistic environment, the lifestyle, love of sport and the safety and security I felt while inside the gated clubs in Argentina. Today, this lifestyle exists at New Bridge, just minutes from downtown Aiken. The residents that have chosen to reside here enjoy the sport of polo and the fellowship of other equestrians and neighbors within a gated, secure setting. They live in a healthy environment with fresh air, beautiful scenery and spectacular sunsets. Like the clubs in Argentina, New Bridge is also protected, for the security and privacy of its residents. Fencing provides protection on New Bridge Road along with entrance gates. Shaw’s Creek borders the back of the property, and Joyce Branch and Clearwater Branch provide natural borders along the other two sides. I am very pleased with the way we have grown over the past 20 years. The polo club has a strong reputation for being one of the best in the Southeast. Our residents are a mix of riders and non-riders of all ages and nationalities that embrace New Bridge life. Our evolution has been a gradual maturation, much like a fine wine. New Bridge continues to get better and better with age. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, advertisers, members and guests for their continued support and loyalty. Games are open to the public. I invite you to bring your family and friends to experience the healthful, safe, wide open spaces of New Bridge. See you on the field!

hotel’s private beachfront. Teams comprised of professional and amateur players brought their mallets and horses to the beach for an event that will now become an annual attraction. In 2002, Dardo started DI Polo Tour, a turnkey polo outfitter, in Plant City, Florida. DI Polo Tour provides a complete polo experience on the field – bringing the horses and players. Clients just show up with their boots and a mallet. It is perfect for those who want to get started in the sport, or for those who want to sharpen their skills. When asked why he’s been successful, Dardo remarked, “Over the years, I have continually invested money back into the business (in property and horses) to make it better and better.” Dardo knows something about building a business from the ground up. He was born in Argentina in a small town about 200 miles from Buenos Aires, where he grew up riding horses and working cows. In the winter of 1985, Dardo came to Palm Beach to see his brother, who was playing polo, and stayed for two years. He fell in love with America, and with polo too. He went back to Argentina, but returned to the United States in 1989 and decided to build his life here. In 1997, Dardo had a client named Russ McCall. In 1998, Russ asked Dardo to organize a 12-goal team to play in Aiken, and that was the beginning of the New Bridge dream. Russ asked Dardo to look at a piece of property with him. The property was just pine trees at that time but would emerge into the New Bridge Polo & Country Club we know today. Dardo has witnessed the evolution of New Bridge into a first-class polo community. “It is a great concept with superb amenities,” he said. “New Bridge is unique, with multi-disciplines and a great mix of people.” ■

Players: Players are rated on a handicap system from -2 to 10; 10 being the best in the world. Players are not limited by gender or age. Polo Pony: Polo “ponies” are usually Thoroughbreds (14.2 to 16.2 hands) selected for their speed, agility, endurance and intelligence. Most players believe their polo pony accounts for up to 75% of their game.

B: Mallet Mallet lengths range from 49” to 54” to best fit a player’s swing and size of pony. They are constructed of bamboo cane with a tipa wood head. C: Roached Mane Manes are clipped to prevent them from getting tangled with the reins and out of the player’s face.

Polo Ball: The ball is 3” in diameter and made of hard, white plastic that dents after continuous hits.

D: Bridle Leather bridles are customized to fit each pony. The most common bits used in polo are the gag, snaffle and pelham.

A: Helmet Helmets are required equipment for protection against swinging mallets, flying balls and spills.

E: Draw Reins A second set of reins for better control extends from the girth, through the bridle to the rider’s hands.

F: Boots/Wraps: Used to protect the pony’s legs from the ball and mallet while providing additional support. G: Boots/Knee Pads Leather boots protect the rider and knee pads guard again injury in a “ride-off.” H: Shoes Give the pony better traction. CHUKKERS of Hope By Katie Roth | Photos by Shelly Marshall Schmidt

4th Annual Chukkers of Hope Friday October 4, 2019

THE MISSION of Chukkers of Hope The mission of Chukkers of Hope is to bring awareness to important social causes through the sport of polo. The new format proved to be successful as $40,000 was raised for several worthy causes including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Child Advocacy Center of Aiken County.

Thank you to the sponsors who made this event possible: SIG Management, Apollon Wealth Management, Hull Barrett PC Law Firm, South State Bank, Harnett Family, Frank Evans Family, Skoda Contracting, Meybohm Realtors, Taylor BMW, Jacobs Land Management, and Kenny Ray Personal Fitness.

Chukkers of Hope

returned to New Bridge Polo & Country Club last fall under the exciting new format of a Friday evening polo match on Field #1 as the sun set over the Clubhouse. A “white party” theme made for a picturesque backdrop as attendees dressed to the nines in white attire enjoyed food and drinks in the rustic clubhouse and relaxed on white couches on the lush, green lawn. Guests were treated to an exciting 12-goal polo match with two competitive teams, a silent auction, best dressed contest, champagne divot stomp and an after party. Special guest Miss South Carolina USA 2019 Makenzie Divina was in attendance, and Aiken’s Andrew Siders kicked off the festivities by singing the national anthem. A thrilling match in the USPA National Copper Cup 12 Goal tournament slated Crestview Genetics up against SD Farms. Aiden Meeker, Charlie Caldwell (for Alan Meeker), Santi Torres, and Hugo Lloret played for Crestview Genetics, while Parker Daniels, Sayu Dantata, Juan Martin Obregon, and Peco Polledo played for SD Farms. It was an action-packed game, but Crestview Genetics came out the victors 13-5 over SD Farms.

St Jude Children’s Research Hospital The dedicated people at St. Jude do great work to help prevent and find cures to diseases through research and treatment and at zero cost to patients. They also share their findings with organizations all over the world so “one child saved at St. Jude means thousands more saved worldwide.” Stjude.com

Child Advocacy Center of Aiken County Formed in 2005 to offer a safe environment to help abused children and their families, the primary purpose of CAC is to minimize trauma to child victims of maltreatment and sexual abuse, to improve the collaboration of community agencies, and to prevent child abuse. Aiken’s Sport of Eating and Drinking Outside By Marianne Yost | Photos by Shelly Marshall Schmidt

EADO. It’s what we do here in Aiken, and we do it a lot. EADO, the acronym for “Eating and Drinking Outside,” happens in the fresh air with friends or family, usually watching or participating in a sporting event. Sometimes the “sporting event” is the act of eating and drinking itself. As it is increasingly evident that “fresh air” is not just an enjoyable commodity, but an actual necessity for a healthful quality of life in this new COVID-oriented era, there has never been a better time or place to be than in Aiken. Its 120-year status as a “health” resort was literally founded on the quality of the air here in the pine-laden rolling midland region of South Carolina. Louise Hitchcock, one-half of New York society’s young new “it couple” was brought to Aiken in the early 1900’s as a young girl by her guardian who hoped the spring water and pine-scented fresh air would keep her young charge’s fragile lungs strong and healthy. Later, when Louise married Tommy Hitchcock Sr., the two young trendsetters, and namesakes of the Hitchcock Woods, became founders of Aiken’s famed sporting “Winter Colony.”

COVID-19 IS DEVASTATING TO IMPOVERISHED COMMUNITIES. Even if they have been exposed to the virus, women and their donkeys still have to walk miles to fetch water for their families. Farmers still need to take their mules to crowded, hot markets to sell their goods. Children still need help from their horses to complete morning chores. None of that changes during a global health crisis.

THE NEED FOR SUPPORT IN THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE HAS INCREASED.

WHEN PEOPLE SUFFER, SO DO THEIR WORKING EQUINES. YOUR DONATION MEANS MORE TODAY THAN EVER BEFORE.

Being around twins can seem like an ongoing party trick — which one is which? Is there any way to tell them apart? You would be hard-pressed to find a person who isn’t guilty of accidentally mixing up siblings in an identical twin set. Identical or monozygotic twins, occur in about 3 of every 1,000 births. They are the same sex; have the same blood type, hair and eye color; hand and footprints and chromosomes; yet have different teethmarks and fingerprints. Despite having the same genetic makeup, identical twins form their own distinctive personalities. Just how their individuality emerges remains a mystery. Scientists believe that environment and/or life experiences may play a role. Although they may look alike, they can be very different. Twins are remarkable. But even more unique is the story of Harry and Charlie Caldwell, identical twins that have crossed paths with two sets of equine twins.

New Bridge | 2020 | 61

Harry and Charlie Caldwell grew up on a ranch in Coldwater, Tennessee, surrounded by big open spaces, a variety of animals and their grandparents nearby. Their parents, Rob and Joanna, are avid equestrians, and long-time fox hunters with the Cedar Knob Hounds. Naturally, the boys grew up around horses. They began riding their miniature horse at age 5, with their dog pulling the lead rope, guiding them around the property. Harry and Charlie started helping at the hunt, bathing horses and preparing the hounds, then fox hunting themselves, whipping-in at age 12. “My mom taught me a lot about horse management and care for horses, but my dad taught me probably the most important thing – how to be a cowboy – because that was always my number one priority as a kid,” said Harry. Both boys went into team roping, acquiring the skills of riding a quick and handy horse that would help them later on in polo.

62 | 2020 | New Bridge

As young teens, Harry and Charlie played polocrosse, a team sport that is a combination of polo and lacrosse. They both excelled quickly in the sport. At age 14, Charlie made the under-16 team that went to Australia to play test matches. He was the youngest member of the team. Both boys were playing in the top division in the U.S. at age 15 and were longlisted for the U.S. Men’s World Cup Team. Polocrosse taught the boys the importance of teamwork.

careers. Both horses the boys entered trained over the summer under Wayman’s watchful eye. Charlie and Old Tavern, or “Taberna” earned high scorer in the polo division both days, securing his division, and moved on to capture the “America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred” title up against division champions from other disciplines. Charlie was the first junior trainer to win the title and Taberna was the first polo pony to take top honors.

The pair soon tried polo, adding it to their list of equestrian disciplines. In the summer of 2017, they spent time in Sheridan, Wyoming mentoring with former 10-goaler and Hall of Famer Tommy Wayman. Both agree it was the best experience of their lives. “His wisdom is unfathomable. From day one, we had a connection with him. He will tell you straight how it is whether you want to hear it or not. He does not sugarcoat anything,” said Charlie.

As Harry and Charlie have expanded their riding skills to successfully compete in many equestrian disciplines, they also developed the knowledge and skills to become good horse trainers.

In 2017, Harry and Charlie competed in the Retired Racehorse Project’s (RRP) Thoroughbred Makeover, a threeday competition created to showcase the trainability and talent of off-track Thoroughbreds in ten different disciplines. The competition is intended to inspire good trainers to become involved in transitioning racehorses to second

When the twins started high school, they had a chance to hone their horse training skills on a pair of Canadian Warmbloods – that were actually twins. Twins are a rarity in the horse world, with only a few special cases in which both foals survive. Why the miserable odds? The mare’s uterus is not designed to support two pregnancies simultaneously. Most often, one or both die in the womb or at birth. The boys found success in training the twin warmbloods. “Tiny” and “Tim” were grandsons to the famous racehorse “Seattle Slew” and went on to become fox hunters.

The next set of twins Harry and Charlie would encounter would be Thoroughbreds, Mr. Ping and Mr. Pong. Twins occur a little more commonly in Thoroughbreds than in other breeds; about 20% of ovulations in Thoroughbred mares are double ovulations. About 10 percent of Thoroughbred pregnancies initially result in twins, but almost all of them are either brought down to one by a veterinarian, the mare will abort both potential foals or complications will lead to at least one stillborn foal. The set of copper chestnut colts with flashy blazes created an international splash when they made their first starts in a claiming race at Charles Town on April 6, 2018. Although they finished last and second last (Mr. Pong just ahead of Mr. Ping) it is rare to have twins survive to adulthood, let alone compete against each other, and media outlets from Europe picked up the story. The colts were born at Amanda Morro’s Avonwood Farm in Charles Town, West Virginia, for owner-breeder John P. 64 | 2020 | New Bridge

Casey. Initial ultrasounds failed to reveal that the 17-hand mare Washingtonian was carrying twins. “She carried them and showed no sign of twins, other than she was very big,” said trainer Larry Curtis. “But she was always big, so we didn’t think anything of it.” Mr. Ping inherited his mother’s socks, but was small and weak, weighing only 25 pounds. Mr. Pong pushed 70 pounds and nursed readily. Mr. Ping would continue to struggle the first few months, but eventually gained strength. Curtis says there are plenty of differences between the colts. As with humans, they seem more like cousins than twins once you get to know them well. Mr. Pong is sweettempered and social while Mr. Ping is more temperamental and challenging to deal with. Curtis has trusted Harry and Charlie with many off the track Thoroughbreds for retraining, including Old Tavern,

who won the RRP. Upon their retirement from racing, Curtis sent Mr. Ping and Mr. Pong to the boys for training to pursue their second careers. “They are both very kind natured horses and super playful with each other,” said Charlie. Harry has been training Mr. Ping, who he says is very athletic and will become a solid ranch horse. Charlie has been training Mr. Pong, who he says is very laid back and calm and will make a nice fox hunter. Currently, Harry and Charlie are juniors at USC Aiken with majors in Business Marketing and Business Administration. They successfully keep up a balancing act of attending classes, keeping good grades, having their own barn and

being responsible for their own strings of playing horses and bringing along several young, green horses at the same time. Both play on the USC Aiken Polo Team and in tournaments at New Bridge and across the country. According to their mom, horses have shaped the boys, making them who they are. “Rob and I always and still do give them choices. We reiterate that it’s important to us and for them to be individuals and do what they love, enjoy and have a passion for. They don’t have to do the same things, but they choose to. With horses comes hard work, sweat, tears, patience, responsibility, work ethic, practicality, empathy, and attentiveness. At a young age, the boys showed natural talent with and around horses. I believe they are true horsemen in every aspect,” said Joanna. ■

Uncovering Secrets of the National Beverage of Argentina

Photos by Shelly Marshall Schmidt & courtesy of Vakiano

The British have a deeply steeped history in tea, and the Italians have a strong game in expresso, but neither compares to the cultural ties that South America shares with its energy boosting beverage of choice, maté. If you’ve never heard of maté, you don’t have to take a long flight to Latin America to experience it – it is present right here in Aiken, South Carolina. What do a charming Southern town and a legendary caffeinated beverage have in common? The answer is the sport of polo. At any polo match in Aiken, it is common to see Argentine players and grooms cradling interesting and beautiful matés in their hands. They sip the beverage out of silver straws and pass it among their group. It is an authentic, intriguing, and mysterious sight – one that most Americans do not understand. Drinking and sharing the maté is one of the most beloved traditions in South America. Maté is much more than our “cup of joe”, it is a symbol of national pride, a way of life, and present at all gatherings (large and small), providing a sense of community.

Mate; sometimes spelled maté

in English

(though not in Spanish or Portuguese), also known as chimarrão or cimarrón, is a traditional South American caffeine-rich infused drink with many health benefits. It has tons of antioxidants (more than green tea) and vitamins A, B, C and E, calcium and iron. Maté contains mateine, which relaxes the muscles while stimulating the heart. It is an anti-inflammatory, acts as a great digestive agent, boosts the immune system, and may aid in weight loss by increasing fat oxidation during exercise. New Bridge | 2020 | 71

Maté is a tea made from the crushed leaves of the yerba mate plant. And, just to make it confusing, maté is also the name of the cup in which you drink it from. Maté has a very distinctive taste that becomes instantly recognizable; it is earthy, grassy, smoky, and bitter. Some believe it possesses magical properties, and at one time in its illustrious history, those who feared its powers and popularity threatened the survival of this mystical beverage. The tradition and rituals of drinking maté go back five centuries and remained unchanged today. The yerba maté tree is a species of the holly family with evergreen leaves. The leaves are often hand-picked, then dried in a controlled environment.Yerba maté leaves are similar to wine in their aging process, which can take anywhere from one month to three years to age depending on the variety. They are sometimes roasted over a wood fire before they are broken or cut to create the final herb for consumption. Some yerba maté is even aged in cedar or other wood for up to a year or more for added flavor. From germination to packaging, it can take approximately five years to harvest just one crop of yerba maté. The leaves are dried, chopped, and ground into a powdery mixture call yerba, “erva” in Portuguese, which means “herb”. The leaves are steeped in hot water (water temperature is key) and served with a metal straw from a shared hollow gourd, called a maté. Traditional matés are made of animal horn, gourds or wood. They are commonly embellished with silver, sporting decorative or heraldic designs with floral motifs. Some have such elaborate silver ornaments that they are considered pieces of art, sought after by collectors worldwide. Matés have grown as diverse as the array of people who take part in the custom of drinking from them. Today, you can find matés in a myriad of different colors and sizes, ranging from traditional leather to stainless steel and plastic. Choosing a maté is a reflection of one’s personal style. The infused yerba maté herbs are not strained out from the water as with tea or coffee. The straw, or “bombilla”, acts as a filter. Traditional bombillas are made of silver. Modern, bombillas are made of nickel,

silver, stainless steel or hollow-stemmed cane. Each basic straw features a sieve at the bottom, and more elaborate straws may boast additional twists, etchings, and added silver decorations or crests. Maté is not something you traditionally order in restaurants, bars or coffee shops, but rather something you prepare at home and take with you. Maté drinkers carry a thermos or “termo” of hot water so they can enjoy maté at any place and time. Maté can be served hot or cold, some adding a little sugar, honey, lemon or orange peel. The traditional way to drink maté is hot, without any additives, and “amargo” (bitter maté).

New Bridge | 2020 | 73

Those who drink it, don’t go a day without it...

Those who drink it, don’t go a day without it – and they drink it all day long. Maté knows no age or social barriers, it is shared amongst everyone from wealthy aristocrats to college friends, gauchos, old couples, among families – even toddlers drink it. Although some people drink it alone while working, reading or studying, it is more of a shared activity based on ancient customs and rituals.

74 | 2020 | New Bridge

The origins of maté begin with the Guarani, an ancient people indigenous to the South American rainforests, who not only used the leaves as a drink, but as a currency in their exchanges with other prehistoric cultures. For the Guarani, the yerba maté tree was worshiped as a gift from the gods given to them to sustain life, increase vitality and heal the sick. As a spiritual herb, yerba maté was used for worship and often a part of religious and important tribal ceremonies. The people of the Guarani call this tea “the drink of friendship.” European explorers soon learned from the Guarani the uses and virtues of yerba maté, and its consumption quickly spread across the region. As the Spanish began to colonize the countries across South America, they saw firsthand the health and energy benefits this indigenous beverage had on the people of the land. They took up the habit and quickly spread and popularized the herb as they conquered the continent. The stimulant properties of the beverage became popular with Argentine gauchos (or cowboys), who sipped maté for energy during cattle drives or long harvest days. It was also consumed in place of scarce food during periods of drought or famine. This “cowboy coffee” was sipped in the morning and at night around the campfire, where a shared gourd of maté was passed around and sipped in fellowship as meals were prepared.

So, is it mate or maté? Normally, when words from other languages are adopted into English, their accent marks go away. In this case, it is the other way around. In both Spanish and Portuguese, the word is spelled mate and pronounced MAH-tay. The word maté in Spanish means “killed.” In the United States, people unfamiliar with the drink see “yerba mate” and pronounce mate to rhyme with late. So, it has become accepted in English to add the accent above the e just to help us pronounce the word right. Linguists call this a hypercorrection. Elegant, Silver 1000 (100% silver) chalice style matés from Vakiano with chiseled leaf motifs. www.vakiano.com and @vakiano.artisans New Bridge | 2020 | 75

It’s tempting, but don’t stir the maté with the bombilla, ok? Maté is seen as a symbol of strength and the bond of friendship. Those who drink it take pride in the ritual of its preparation and consumption. These rituals are marked with components designed to bring people together, and the procedures are fixed and never broken. Traditionally, the maté and the bombilla are shared among everyone — this is part of the social and cultural experience. The “cebador” (server) makes the maté and is the one who will ensure that everybody is provided with their tea, and it is of good quality. The cebador prepares the maté, sips it down to make sure it is smooth, then prepares another maté in the same gourd to pass from guest to guest. Each guest sips down a gourd of maté and returns it to the cebador to prepare another for the next guest in the circle. The maté is always passed to the right and it is considered selfish and rude to drink the maté out of turn. It is also considered bad etiquette to hold the maté for too long. The maté is passed until the yerba has to be replaced or everyone is satisfied. Saying “gracias” to the cebador means you have had enough tea for now, thanks. Being invited to share maté is to be welcomed and be a part of the camaraderie, a symbol of Argentine hospitality. And who wouldn’t want to give this magical drink a try? Maté is often described having the energy kick of coffee, the smooth flavor of traditional tea, the healing components of herbal tea and the feel-good factor of chocolate. In fact, the yerba maté plants contain caffeine, theophylline and theobromine, the stimulants also found in coffee, tea and chocolate. ■

For those who partake in the maté-drinking tradition, the maté is a versatile friend. Maté can be the perfect companion in moments of solitude. Like a good cigar or a fine whisky, maté is the ideal complement to a moment of contemplation, a beautiful sunset, or a serene landscape. Students, artisans, and gauchos alike accompany their work with a good maté. In the gaucho tradition, hot water for the maté was boiled over a fire. Gauchos gathered together around the flames to share the tea, conversation, and guitar music. The maté ritual is rooted in the spirit of sharing and community, which is why even today to refuse a maté from a friend can be interpreted as an offence. Drinking maté is an inclusive activity and offering someone a maté is considered a gesture of friendship.

Left: A selection of matés from Vakiano (www.vakiano.com). Today, the gourd base is still most widely used to make matés. Modern artisans often add silver detailing around the gourd rim and may create a silver or leather base for the gourd to help it stand freely. Gourds can be dyed different colors and can feature a person’s initials or logos for a customized touch.

Today, for the inheritors of the maté culture, maté is an element that still catalyzes social gatherings and prolongs conversations with friends. The famed writer Jorge Luis Borges commented that the cult of friendship may be one of our most elemental virtues, and maté tends to be present in the celebration of human connections. Maté is, by extension, part of the region’s social foundation. In my personal case, maté has accompanied me everywhere; I drink it at work, at home, on vacation. My children drank their first matés even before they learned to walk.

The anticipation of a new pony has the potential to incite all sorts of youthful feelings, no matter one’s age. Of course, the search alone can turn into a full-time diversion for the hours spent scrolling through photos, videos, and on horse rescue websites, either forwarded by trainers or discovered through the abundance of #salehorse posts on Instagram. It can also become next-level exhilarating when combined with a two-week trip to Argentina. Last fall, conversation over an authentic Argentine asado dinner (served semi-al fresco in the center aisle of a stable), turned to an annual horse shopping trip curated by Martin Videla and his wife Rachel to his native province of Buenos Aires. The Videlas manage Rancho Pampa, a predominantly jumper-focused training farm that they recently relocated from Argentina to Aiken. Every November, they accompany a large group of clients on a scouting trip that is as much an insider’s equestrian vacation with avid locals as it is a crash-course in the venerable qualities of performance horses bred in the region (and the fiscal advantages of acquiring one). Whitney Pierpont is a close friend of the Videlas, and joined them on one such trip in 2018. Though her first foray was “just for fun, “she was so positively struck by the experience that she returned with them in 2019, this time with an acquisition in mind. An adventurous fox hunter and eventer,Whitney has made the most of her trip each year, touring some of the country’s most distinct areas on horseback (with recommendations from the Videlas) before meeting up with them to shop for her new mount. Following is Whitney’s play-byplay of what sounds like the ultimate horse shopping-and-vacation trip of a lifetime, complemented by a very personal souvenir.

Typically, equestrians shopping for imports go to Europe. Why Argentina? “Why not? is a better question!

There are so many advantages

to shopping for horses in Argentina. The exchange rate is great right now. You can see over one hundred carefully selected horses with incredible bloodlines in just a few days. One of the biggest benefits is that (whether a mare, stallion or gelding), there is only a one week quarantine when you import them to the U.S., unlike importing from Europe where mares have two or more weeks and stallions a month (big money savings). And on top of seeing incredible horses, you get to enjoy all of the benefits of spending time in Buenos Aires.

TELL US about Rancho Pampa and the type of horses they import?

108 | 2020 | New Bridge

The great thing about Martin is that even though he’s from Argentina, he has worked in the U.S., has had lots of U.S. clients, and is now based in Aiken running his own training farm, so he knows first hand what type of horse the U.S. market wants. They breed, buy (for clients and themselves), and bring over warmbloods (Silla Argentinos) that combine great bloodlines, temperament, and trainability. Their horses are out there winning primarily in the hunter ring, in the jumper ring, and in eventing.

Where in Argentina does Martin escort clients, and encourage them to explore? Martin is passionate about his country and loves to share his knowledge of its history and the people. He encourages his clients to explore Mendoza and the wine country, and the IguazĂş Falls. Then of course, there is so much to see in the Patagonia region that he recommends: the Andes; Puerto Madryn to see the whales, sea lions, and orca, and further south, the largest penguin rookery in the world; El Calafate, which is near the Los Glaciares National Park; and home to the massive Perito Moreno Glacier.

On this trip, my friend and I flew into Buenos Aires followed by a two-hour flight west to Bariloche in the lake district at the base of the Andes. On our first night we stayed at the charming Aldebarán Hotel & Spa overlooking the water for some cozy pampering before several days of riding. The following morning we were picked up by Dominique, our host and guide from Andesluna Ranch, which would be our home base from which we would set out on mounted day trips. After a beautiful hour’s drive on legendary Route 40, one of the world’s greatest motor tours, we pulled into the picturesque, intimate Restaurante Pirque. The food was prepared by an Argentine couple using local, fresh food from the province. After lunch we continued on our journey and soon started driving on a rough, single-lane natural rock road into a valley of the Andes. At times our truck seemed to be clinging to the side of a steep cliff. It was exciting, and, literally, breathtaking when our truck plunged into a river of rapids and water rushed over the hood. Eventually, we could see Andesluna Ranch deep in the valley. It was like looking at a green oasis. We spent the next few days riding their sturdy and friendly Criollo horses out from the ranch through valleys, across mountain ridges, and traversing steep terrain.

Crossing a rushing river in the valley on horseback was momentous. As the horses took us though the current with

apparent ease, the equally adept Border Collies would swim alongside; however, they would consistently get swept down the river. Once they managed to get out on the other side, they would run back to catch up to us. We crossed the water multiple times and were amazed at how well the horses handled the swift current and rocky river bottom. We also really enjoyed the vistas looking across the mountains and valleys that were simply spectacular. On one special afternoon, we came across a vast meadow and built a campfire under old trees that lined a little creek. We ate grilled meat with cheese, bread, and wine. It was magical.

It sounds like extended periods in the saddle promise the most authentic experiences. Any interesting equipment or tips? The gauchos have created the most comfortable saddle designed for hours of riding and ease of staying on. They are multi-layered, with plush sheepskin covers. They often used them to rest their heads on the ground at night when working on the vast grasslands.

Any recommendations for packing or preparation? We were in Argentina during late spring (midNovember), when the weather in the mountains is chilly and windy. I packed my Patagonia (of course!) three-in-one jacket and it was a lifesaver: it cut the wind and kept me dry during rainy spells. Dominique also provided thick ponchos from Ecuador to layer on top of our outerwear. As for the detailed planning, we worked with MacDermott’s Argentina. Hugh MacDermott helps create the tailored experience you are looking for. For Andesluna Ranch, Tammy and Dominique are down to earth, friendly, and love sharing their ranch, horses, hearth, fresh produce from their greenhouse, and the wild land that surrounds their home. When our adventure was over at Andesluna, we flew back to Buenos Aires to enjoy the city and begin yet another inaugural adventure, a visit to equine estancias to scout sale horses with Martin.

Now for the (horse) shopping … What can one expect? Martin finds his clients a clean, safe Airbnb in a convenient location of Buenos Aires. He arranges all of the horse viewing appointments and provides the transportation. His horse shopping expeditions are full, long, and very productive. Some days we can see up to 30 horses free jumping, under tack, or available for a trial ride.

Can you give us an example of the types of riders on this trip and what they are looking for? Every day I was in a car with hunters, jumpers, eventers, breeders, and investors. Personally, I was there looking for a young eventing prospect to train myself. I found a beautiful mare with a powerful jump.

The days are jam packed with lots of horses and even more fun! Typically, Martin rents a van that he drives, and we all hop in and let the adventures begin. Martin takes clients to breeding farms, the popular riding clubs (German Riding Club, The Military Equestrian Center in BA, Club Hípico, etc.) and private farms. In order to accommodate

everyone on our trip, we looked at everything from unbroken 3 year olds that will soon be auctioned, to hunter prospects, and horses competing Grand Prix. We usually grabbed lunch on the road. Dinner was always back in Buenos Aires, and we consistently had incredible meals at

places tourists would not otherwise find (one of the great advantages to having a local make the arrangements!). We always made time for “horsing around” between serious shopping. Attending polo games, watching tango performances, a day trip to an artisan silversmith who designs custom jewelry, belts, bowls, and knives — these are just a few of the cultural activities. It’s an incredible, nonstop, equestrian vacation where the days are full, but full of fun. People will often take side trips elsewhere in the country like I did.

Are most horses green, and if so, … how do you get a feel for potential? We saw horses of all ages and experience. The young horses that are not trained under tack are shown free jumping. You can get up close and personal with the horses as well. If you are serious about a horse,

you can arrange a vetting and have the results shared with your vet back home.

the acquisition experience... Once we were all back in the States, Martin and Rachel hosted an asado at their farm in Aiken where we watched a live auction in Argentina with the horses we had seen. During the auction, Martin was in constant communication by phone with an agent of the auction company that handled the bidding process. In my case, we had already vetted two horses during our visit to Argentina, and so it was very exciting to stand with Martin as he bid on my behalf, and helped me successfully purchase my first horse from South America.

This may not be surprising, but the more time you spend listening, watching, absorbing, and learning, the better trained your eye is for identifying talent!

Congratulations, you bought a new horse! What was the next step? Martin arranged this young mare’s “backing” by using one of his trusted friends who is a gifted horseman. The mare learned quickly, advanced to her next stage of training at the military equestrian center in Buenos Aires, and then arrived in Aiken in mid-March! Her name is Emperatriz, which is Empress in Spanish, and I call her “Empire.” She is as sweet as can be, well behaved, and has adjusted swiftly to life here in Aiken. I attribute her good behavior and willingness to learn to the positive and kind training she received in Argentina. It has been a wonderful experience observing all of her “firsts” as a young horse that is growing and learning every day.■
