I’m on my way to BreyerWest®! It’s something that I’ve wanted to attend since I first discovered the event a couple years ago, but being on the other side of the U.S., Oregon is no easy trip! Since I’ve been doing more and more model horse showing, I figured it was time for the adventure!

I got in, found my table, set up the ponies and had some time to spare before the show began, so I decided to cruise around and say hello to the besties, meet some new people and take lots of photos while I had the time. I can already confirm that this event is very different from the hectic, fast paced days filled with activities at BreyerFest®. Here, there is definitely a lot more “breathing room”… time to socialize and mingle with other artists and enthusiasts. There is a manageable amount of activities and enough time to enjoy them all.

Here’s the gist …

Model Horse Show: This is the main event. THIS IS BreyerWest®. Most of the time when I heard about the BreyerWest® Model Horse Show, I got the impression that it isn’t recommended as a first-time showing event. It’s always been described as intense, fast-paced and “experience required,” before showing here. However, I didn’t get this impression at all. Granted, I do have experience, and this was for sure “not my first rodeo,” and I found that the show was extremely well-run and organized and went at a nice manageable pace. Now, if a firsttimer, I wouldn’t recommend entering more than one division, but as long as you do some research about how model horse showing works before going, it is manageable. It’s nothing to be afraid of, but the competition is top notch, so your pieces will have to be competitive to win ribbons. In the end, if you are still nervous about going all in with the open show, there is also a novice show as well! This latter show is designed specifically for beginners with tons of information and learning opportunities to prepare you for the “big leagues” when you’re ready!

That’s ME and the rest of the “Sculpting A Medallion” Workshop Buddies!

Other BreyerWest® Activities: Outside of the model horse shows, BreyerWest® also offered a wide variety of workshops. The two I can personally comment on from a student’s perspective were “Making a Leather Halter” with Jennifer Buxton, and “Sculpting a Medallion” with Kylee Parks. Both workshops were fantastic, well-organized and contained a wealth of information! I learned so much! Jennifer Buxton’s workshop was my first experience in making tack and now I’m itching to make more! Another workshop offered was “Painting Micro Minis” with Maggie Bennett. While I didn’t enroll in this one, I stood on the outskirts of the attendees and observed for awhile—everyone looked like they were having a great time and created some wonderful little pieces! Aside from the artist workshops, there was also stablemate painting for children, a YouTube meet-up with Stormy Strike, and the Breyer Booth hosted a couple of Breyer raffles and silent auctions and featured some great new models and accessories for sale. Saturday night I attended the swap meet at the Phoenix Inn host hotel. There was a wide variety of model horse items to buy and it had an excellent turnout! While 5 to 6 hotel rooms were open for shopping, it differentiates greatly from the hotel room shopping that

6 | Imagine Equine • Summer 2019

occurs at the Clarion during BreyerFest®. Those with open hotel rooms posted their information on the BreyerWest® Facebook page, so you could locate them. Down-Time/The Fairgrounds and the Fair: BreyerWest® occurs at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany, Oregon during the Northwest Horse Fair & Expo, so while there was plenty of shopping between the two main buildings for the event (including some Breyers and model horses), most booths were geared towards living equine items. There were a few clothing/accessory booths, pet supplies, candy, etc., but a majority of the vendor areas were a reflection of the Horse Fair. Traffic was minimal at and around the fairgrounds and parking always seems to be available. The facilities as a whole are excellent. Walking from the buildings to the barns can always be done via a covered walkway; essential as it always seemed to be damp and/or raining. I’d definitely recommend a jacket (it’s chilly), umbrella and potentially a hat and gloves. Nearly everything but the pony rides are inside though, so once you are in the facility, the weather doesn’t matter much. The food scene is comparable to familiar types of events: food tents/trucks outside and a kitchen in one of the buildings for a quick, tasty lunch. Like BreyerFest® and many other horse–centric fairs, there are two barns with a schedule of performances throughout the day. There are many real horses to see/meet, as well as friendly owners happy to chat! I’ve experienced some of the most beautiful horses I’ve ever seen here!

Now that I ’m home...

and thinking about the BreyerWest® adventure as a whole, I’m so happy to have made the trip and will look forward to many more in the years ahead. It’s a quiet, low key, laid back and intimate event, great for learning, meeting new people and catching up with old friends. Sending a big shout out and THANK YOU to Erin Corbett for putting on such a great show and organizing such an enjoyable event for model horse lovers everywhere!

THE BASICS: Your Prepped Model, Pastels and/or Earth Pigments, Brushes, Matte Spray Varnish, Acrylic Paint, Gloss Medium, an Eraser Pencil, an X-acto Knife, plate/pallette, reference photo and a Mask.

SPECIFICS: Pastels and/or Earth Pigment Colors used to achieve palomino include Earth Pigments Titanium White, Earth Pigments Black Iron Oxide, Gold Ochre soft pastel stick, Burnt Umber soft pastel stick, and Pearl-Ex Pearl pigment

SAFETY: It’s important to wear a mask while painting with pastels to avoid inhalation. Also, make sure you are outside or in a well-ventilated area when spraying matte varnish.

TIPS: When using pastel sticks, gently scrape them with your x-acto knife into a fine powder.

Imagine Equine • Summer 2019 | 11

Here, the model is prepped and primed in ivory. (If you do not have ivory primer, white primer works too. Apply light yellow ochre pigment or acrylic paint to reach this color). Before applying any pigments, be sure to spray a light coat of matte varnish onto the model; let dry completely.

Mix together Earth Pigments TITANIUM WHITE and PEARL-EX PEARL on a plate, then apply with a soft brush.

Apply black pigment to skin areas. Seal with matte varnish.

12 | Imagine Equine • Summer 2019

Add a small amount of gold ochre to your existing pile of white, mix together and apply to your model. Then, add more gold ochre to the same pile and apply.

The key to working with pastels is building color very slowly to avoid grain. DO NOT SEAL THESE LAYERS YET! WATCH THE VIDEO to see how to use your eraser pencil, lifting the pigment to create dapples. Once you’ve reached your desired amount of dapples, seal with matte varnish.

Imagine Equine • Summer 2019 | 13

Add more gold ochre to your mixture and apply. Add a touch more black to skin areas. SEAL.

Add even more gold ochre and also a touch of burnt umber to your mixture, apply. Study your reference photo to see where your model needs shading. SEAL. 14 | Imagine Equine • Summer 2019

Using acrylics, paint on final details such as the model’s mane/tail, eyes, white markings, hooves, and chestnuts. SEAL in all of your hard work one last time!

Apply gloss varnish to the model’s eyes and inner nostrils.

While my painting is best known for shimmering chestnuts and bays, my focus has always been on achieving finishes that are consistently realistic and meticulously detailed. I’m fascinated with every exquisite detail of equine coats and coloring, from the tiniest hairs to the genetics. This hobby, and the dozens of championships I’ve been honored with, have produced some of my proudest moments. My experimentation with new mediums and tools continues, constantly giving me fresh insight into ways of capturing the essence of equine beauty. By Heather Malone

I should have been an event planner. I love having shows. Like, really love it. The concept of Candyland Live was born from two small yellow card shows I had as a test run a couple of years before, as part of the Redline show series in Boulder, CO. I wanted to have a show with non-traditional awards and a hard-coded theme. I always loved the thought of a Candy-based show, bolstered by reading Charlie And The Chocolate Factory several times as a child, playing the Candyland board game, not to mention the tale of Hansel and Gretel. Plus, who doesn’t love candy? A year later, after I held the much more traditional “really big show,” Rocky Mountain Spring Fling, which was great fun and very well attended and received, I longed to do something more innovative. Candyland Live was meant to be a low-key, non-NAN qualified interim show, to give me a breather during the Spring Fling’s off years. Initially, I planned to give chocolate coins for ribbons, like the previous small shows I held, and larger candy prizes for the overalls. So much for that idea. 18 | Imagine Equine • Summer 2019

As I am incapable of doing anything halfway, except for the laundry, I mulled over doing a non-standard performance division; I wanted it to be more about fun and creativity vs. grinding through 20+ classes with one horse. With Tiffany Purdy and Stephanie Blaylock graciously offering to judge, I began pricing candy and on a lark, checked out how much giant “giant gummy bears” were. When I saw they had 5 pound bears, I jumped overboard with the Candyland concept. So, on April 13, 2019, the quasi-destination show, Candyland Live took place at Arapahoe County Fairgrounds in Aurora, CO. The one-day show consisted of workmanship and collectability halter, amateur owner & artist, mini and micro classes, a large youth division, fun classes, and a themed performance division. We also offered a swap meet at the show, a painting clinic with Stephanie Blaylock, and planned a special edition “Mares In Black” podcast to record at the hall (which didn’t happen, due to a really loud Quinceañera in the hall next door).

Photos by Heather Malone & Stephanie Blaylock

The workmanship halter classes which were divided by coat color and AR, CM and CMG were bursting with quality and artistry. The collectability classes showcased beautiful rare pieces in both plastic and china. The youth show had SEVEN KIDS, which is the largest we have had in the area so far, and those kids came to WIN! I was so proud of their creativity and ambition with their entries. Amateur artist was a smashing success with an AAO entry by Nae Keller making it all the way to Best in Show consideration. Performance was just as amazing, pure and simple. The uniqueness of the class list brought out some of the most massive, inspiring and hilarious entries I have ever seen. Some of this hobby’s biggest hard-core performance showers went head to head and had a ball doing it. Jackie Rossi brought a “Breath of The Wild” video game inspired entry for over fences, complete with a Link doll and a Guardian that lit up and played music. However, it was Jennifer Buxton that brought the house down with her 16-horse parade route entry for the Think Pink class. The show was a smashing success, from the quality of the competition, the innovation of the class list and the jam-packed raffle, to all my wonderful judges/staff, donors and attendees from near and far. I love making people smile and enjoy themselves, and I loved the whimsy of the candy concept. I hope it was as rewarding for the exhibitors and staff as it was for me! I create originals to cast in resin, ceramic, glass, and metals, in full body and bas-relief. I also create collectibles, giftware, chackhis, and ornaments featuring the equine. A jewelry line in precious metal clays and porcelain beads is in development as well, which I hope to debut in 2020. My illustration work is featured in my Zazzle store, showcasing the equine and mystical beasts in fun stylization. I seek to explore the inner life of an individual soul resonating within the living moment so that I may convey this gracious creature with sensitivity, insight, and kinship. The story from the animal’s point of view is what captivates me and compels my hands to shape the clay. In 2019, I’ll be at The Jennifer Show, September 14-15 in Aurora, CO as a judge. MAKING BIG NOISE!

Long after the game ends, our favorite Arabian horse ambassador keeps rolling for fans everywhere. The Denver Broncos beloved mascot, Thunder, our favorite Arabian horse breed ambassador, and his trainer, our own Ann Judge, are no strangers to galloping across an arena to cheering stands. However, to the delight of anyone at the 52nd U.S. National Championship Horse Show, the green under their feet was not the turf of Mile-High Stadium, but the green shavings of finals weekend in Tulsa, OK! Thunder, Ann and his owner, Sharon Magness Blake, kicked off the classes with their signature flag-flaring charge and hosted countless “selfies” to adoring fans non-stop. Thunder’s presence also prompted a successful “Coats for Kids Drive” to benefit the local community of Tulsa. The Arabian horse community was thrilled for the visit and give great thanks to Team Thunder for their dedication. And now that football season has come to a close, is it time for Thunder to kick back? Nope, not at all. Our proud, handsome guy is back at it with the Denver Broncos Charities and the Thunder Foundation making visits to organizations including the

Children’s Hospital, Denver Rescue Mission, the American Heart Association, Volunteers of America and The Boys and Girls Clubs. Team mascots have a unique and challenging job! They must enjoy people and love performing – both hallmarks of the Arabian breed! So how does one pay homage to a NFL superstar with gameday duties that include leading the Broncos out of the tunnel, all while supporting local charities and their causes? You honor him with his very own Breyer® horse. As if we could not be any prouder, the Arabian horse has a new member in the Breyer® stable! Touchdown!

Since 1999, Ann has served as the rider/trainer of “Thunder,” the Denver Broncos’ Mascot. As well as appearing at all Denver Broncos home games to over 76,000 fans, Ann and Thunder have attended two Super Bowls as well as countless charitable events. The magical quality Horses have to energize is shared by all who love it. The study of their anatomy, the attention to their textures, colors and contours are the details artists around the world spend hours upon hours on in bringing their creations to life. A group of over 200 Breyer Collector Club Members got a full dose of inspiration at the 2018 Scottsdale Stampede Collectors Event.

Creative Inspiration from the Real Deal!

There is no replacement for the true HANDS-ON experience of horses. Their smell, their feel, their sound, and the look in their eye is the perfect way for horse-crazy artists to get inspired with their next creation. Whether you own horses or not, the model horse community is united in their fascination with these beautiful creatures. Put your hands in their mane, smell a handful of hay, and breathe into their nose. Let your creativity run wild!!!! Photos from Rae-Dawn Arabians. A National Champion Arabian horse farm owned by hosts Murray and Shirley Popplewell. Two groups of guests were treated to a private tour of the farm that included open barns, a multi-horse presentation where visitors were able to ask questions, pet, and enjoy beautiful Arabian horses up close and personal, snap selfie photos with the horses, and finish the day off with a delightful lunch. The horses were presented while telling the story of Rae-Dawn’s breeding program and journey with the Arabian horse. www.raedawnarabians.com/
