OCCUPYING GALLARATESE 2013/MILAN, ITALY ACADEMIC PROJECT

The cityscape on the edge of Milan, is dominated by residential blocks. Quartiere Gallaratese is no exception. We opened up Carlo Aynmonino & Aldo Rossi’s Monte Amiata to the neighborhood through a small series of interventions, hosting cultural and leisure activities. Rossi’s is left intact. A series of structures that morph the space are installed, evoking the work of Aldo Albini. On Aymonino’s we remove the barrier and reconnect garden and building, modifying the landscape, providing a soft transition from green to grey by carving out part of the existing parking lot. This rougher side of the program hosts workshops and classrooms in an attempt to create a fine arts school for the neighbours. The opposite extreme is a floating glass box disappearing in front of Rossi’s white building and between the trees, a gallery filled with light, an open space. As common ground between these is the shared square, a place whose function is left to interpretation.
