Dear Readers, “Christmas is a time when people of all religions come together to worship Jesus Christ.” - Bart Simpson

Management Edo Frese edo@jakartaexpat.biz

Love it or hate it, it’s that time of the year again. The tree is decorated, the fireplace is glowing, Christmas carollers grace the streets, chestnuts are roasting, mulled wine and mince pies are consumed by the bulk load as snowflakes fall from the sky, frosting up our bay windows ever so beautifully... Well, maybe not in this part of the world, but we do have our own ways of spreading the festive cheer here in the tropics!

If you go down to any mall in town, you will come across some of the most mind-blowing and over the top decorations you’ll ever see. Last year, Jakarta paid homage to the largest Legoman Santa in Asia and a World Record was broken in another mall where one tree was lit with one million lights. This isn’t Christmas decorating for the faint-hearted. Yeung returns with more on this phenomenon on page 4.

Contributors Darren Alderson Jason Hue Sebastien Laurent Juan G. Leysner Hush Petersen Angela Richardson Eamonn Sadler Antony Sutton Kenneth Yeung

As for Christmas trees, do not fear that you’ll have to hang tinsel around a palm tree (for those first timers to a tropical Christmas) as Petersen has been on a treasure hunt around Jakarta to find and bargain for the best real tree. He will even show you how to be tough and bargain like a pro. Flip to page 9 for this fun read. We also have Sutton back for another history lesson, teaching us the history of Christianity in Indonesia – a fascinating story indeed on page 10. I’d like to thank all of our contributors for their creative gifts. Every time I receive an article, I become like a child opening a present under the tree on Christmas day. It’s a priceless pleasure. Whether you’re staying in town, hopping over to Bali or travelling to your home countries, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, however you like to spend it, but let’s hope it’s shared with your loved ones...

Deck the Malls By Kenneth Yeung

C

riticising Jakarta’s shopping malls for their ostentatious Christmas displays is too easy. We can feel sickened by the crass commercialisation of religious holidays in a country where many people do not have enough to eat, or we can naively view the Christmas glitz as an effort to uphold Indonesia’s religious pluralism. Ultimately, it’s a mostly harmless extravagance that is better than nothing at all.

homes with such stuff. Plastic trees range from Rp.140,000 for an ugly stunted shrub to Rp.22 million for an enormous pine complete with lights and baubles. Some of the busier malls have added to their congestion by setting up temporary stalls in their walkways. Animated singing Santas, reindeer antler headbands, tinsel, stockings, cuddly snowmen, faux porcelain cherubs and fake holly sprigs are among the tat for sale.

Some Islamic organisations have claimed that excessive Christmas decorations could offend Muslims, but Santa Clause is not having much success as a proselytiser of the Christian faith, at least not at Pondok Indah Mall 1 in South Jakarta. The mall’s Christmas displays include a large motion-sensor singing Santa and snowman, which were installed in late November. When a young boy wandered away from his mother to inspect them, he set off the sensors and got the fright of his life when the Santa suddenly started shaking his belly like a bowl full of jelly while singing. More than 100 churches in Indonesia have been closed or destroyed by intolerant mobs over recent years, but there is no such threat to Jakarta’s mighty temples to shallow consumerism. The main complaint has come from the Indonesian Ulemas Council, which simply requested that malls in Muslim majority areas “tone down” their Christmas displays. Evidently there is greater tolerance for the commercial exploitation of Christmas than there is for actual churches. Mall staff don’t seem to mind getting into the Christmas spirit. “I’m a Christian and it’s my right as part of [the national ideology] Pancasila to celebrate Christmas,” said a doorman wearing a Santa hat at Plaza Indonesia. “No other group has the right to say we cannot celebrate Christmas,” he said. At Pasar Raya in Blok M, a salesgirl in a Santa outfit (sans beard) said that although she is a Muslim, she is happy to wear the costume because “this is not about religion, but about business”. For her, there is no connection between Christmas and religion. When it comes to over-the-top Christmas displays, the main malls to head to are Taman Anggrek, Central Park, Pacific Place, Pondok Indah, Ciputra and Pluit Village. There is everything from falling snow to parades, massive trees, choirs, animated creatures, concerts and fashion shows. Just don’t expect to find many displays of baby Jesus in a manger, let alone messages of charity and goodwill. Not all malls in Jakarta have jumped on the Christmas bandwagon, especially smaller ones in Chinatown, which wait until Chinese New Year to bring out their decorations. Elsewhere, the Muslim holiday of Idul Fitri is the time for lavish decorations. Central Park Mall, located alongside the older Taman Anggrek Mall in West Jakarta, commenced its Christmas celebrations on November 26th with a concert by multiaward winning singer Agnes Monica (who started out singing in churches) and the unveiling of a 36-metre-high musical Christmas tree covered in lights. The mall is also having fireworks and laser shows, as well as midnight shopping marathons, lest anyone forget the point of all the festivities. Most malls are continuing their Christmas celebrations until the New Year, some as late as January 8. In addition to their displays, malls are selling plenty of Christmas decorations for people wishing to adorn their

Many malls have at least one Santa Clause and charge shoppers about Rp.50,000 for a photo with the man in the red suit. The Santas come in various shapes and colours, with differing degrees of authenticity. A few malls hire Western men to dress up as Santa. Some of these Santas are extremely professional and experienced, others are not. Three years ago, a mall in Bogor hired an American expatriate to play Santa, paying him Rp.500,000 for five hours work per day. One afternoon the mall was hosting a fashion show and the Santa, who had been drinking before work, felt an irresistible urge to join the attractive models onstage. He sashayed and swivelled up and down the catwalk, managing to grope a few of the models before being sent back to his grotto. Undeterred, he later commandeered one of the mall’s wheelchairs and spun onto the catwalk, where he performed a series of stunt manoeuvres before crashing into the models. He picked himself up, raised his arms aloft and proclaimed to the startled spectators: “It’s a Christmas miracle! I can walk!” That marked the end of his career as a mall Santa. If only the Christmas shows were always so entertaining. Critics like to accuse Jakarta’s mega malls of fostering social jealousy and cocooning the elite from reality, but in truth the city has many malls, catering to all socio-economic levels. Peace and goodwill are personal choices, rather than mercantile responsibilities. 

Grumpy Old Men

Have Yourself a Grumpy Little Christmas

bloody old guy dressed in his red pajamas. I had some crucial questions for him. I remember that our big house was very quiet and I waited for my sister to fall asleep to escape from my bedroom and sit down next to the fireplace in our living room. Everybody was sleeping. I was sure that I would finally talk to this old guy and that he would explain to me clearly if he was a cousin, or the boss, or I don t know, of the Arabic tribe made of terracotta at the bottom of my tree. I was a young kid and of course I fell asleep, but in the middle of my sleep, I was woken up by some strange noises. My heartbeat went from 0 to 500 pulses a minute. He was coming! Finally I would be the one who had spoken to this guy. At first I was a bit surprised that the guy entered through the door and not though our giant chimney. Then I saw a very strange form or shape in the dark, walking in the direction of the tree. This guy didn’t seem that old, but at least something was true; he was carrying tonnes of stuff in his arms. Until that moment, I was quite amazed and excited. But then the guy went straight to the floor lamp and lit up the entire living room. I stood up and just jumped from being 5 to 35 years of age in a matter of seconds as I could see my dad in his underwear carrying a bunch of stuff. I just said, “ Papa,” and he fell down badly on the floor with all the presents. He looked at me and was furious. He just said, “What the hell are you doing here Seb?” And I replied, “Waiting for Santa Claus, Dad.” He suddenly went from being an angry man into a smooth middle age guy who had been caught with another woman by his wife. He came close and sat next to me. “Seb, Santa Clause is overly busy right now and couldn’t deliver to everybody on time, so he asked me to help him a bit. He left the presents in front of the living room door.”

By Sebastien Laurent

My dad seemed very satisfied with his explanation. To be nice to him I said, “OK.”

G

I left the room and that day I knew that I would never believe again my mum or my dad. The next morning we opened all the presents at around 7am. My sister was super excited, but not me. My parents looked at me the whole ‘present opening time’, their eyes saying: “If you say one word to your sister, you will be punished for the next 20 years!” So I shut up and I pretended to thanks Jesus, Santa Clause, the deer, the cows, the sheep, Maria, Joseph and all the tribe. But that day was certainly the beginning of my super grumpiness. Every year, my lovely dad asks me if I will join with the entire family to celebrate Christmas and every year I reply with the same answer. “Sorry Dad, cannot. I have to help an old friend of mine here to carry some stuff under a tree!”

uys, I am back to my grumpy old self. In the last article, “Solution to the Global Crisis”, I tried to be serious and it was basically a disaster. So let’s get back to my basics, which means making you laugh with my grouchiness.

Christmas is coming very soon. For many of you, it signifies family quality time surrounded by presents, happiness and relatives. But for me, I never really understood this mess. I always had the feeling that it was a big lie. Let me explain. When I was four years old, when my mum started to make us build and decorate the Christmas tree, I had already some serious doubts about the existence of these guys (both Jesus and Santa Clause). First she told me that we were building the house of Jesus, this kind of fake plastic cave under the tree that we call “Christmas crib” and where all of Jesus’ family is living half naked and surrounded by a mini zoo. First, I asked my mum why all these people inside the cave looked like Mohammed, Rachida and Ahmed and not like my sister and me. She told me that Bethlehem was situated in a very hot place where some Arabic people were living. Honestly, I was more and more confused. What was the connection between a guy in North Pole building my electric train and all these Arabs in this tiny cave under my Christmas tree? Finally the only answer I got until now was, “Seb, why the hell do you always ask so much questions? Just spray the fake snow on the tree and shut up.” So, at the age of five I was already not sure at all. Maybe I was already very intelligent or not easy to be tricked. So, for the 1977 Christmas, I decided to not sleep and to wait for this

Merry Christmas! 

Meet the Expats

Ho Ho Ho, Greg Redden! And since when have you been spreading the festive joy here in Jakarta? More than 10 years; my fun way of spreading Christmas! It began with my own kids and expanded with church and school volunteer services. I first rode “Godzila” with my family through Bali (Kuta) in 2001 and have regularly remounted. Pubs, malls and TV shows came later and it’s been ‘downhill’ since then! How many girls and boys are on your naughty list this year? No thoroughly naughty little boys or girls (nose pickers, bed wetters and thumb suckers are all safe), but the bigger they get the naughtier they get... Apologies to pub patrons seeking a peek confidentiality must be maintained! What do you find is the most effective way to spread joy in this macet city? I pull into nearest “rest station” and wait for traffic to pass in the companionship of co-“resters”. If during Santa season, walk the talk – accept a gifted beer! Macet on Kemang Raya atop a sleigh can be an opportunity to spread a bit of joy... and free candy! (Jl. Jaksa works too)

What do the children of Jakarta wish for most? Is it for the latest Blackberry? They wish to be with mums and dads celebrating the joy of parenthood in their company. The latest B.B or other “stuff ” is a poor substitute for TLC. Although I’m not suggesting that a B.B. is not appreciated! What do you keep on the dashboard of your car-sleigh? I have my own “chronometer”. It’s somewhat distinguished but car-sleigh regulation compliant. What three things could you never do without when guiding your car-sleigh through the streets of this city? 1. Patience 2. Petrol 3. Presents (inc. for the polisi when pulled over) Where and when will we have a chance to sit on your lap? I “officially” appear at Star Deli for their Christmas gig which is on Friday December 9th. Other planned and “impromptu” appearances a possibility so keep your eyes and ears peeled.

Merry Christmas Jeroen Lezer! How long have you been playing the jolly Santa Clause at Christmas time? I’ve been doing this since 1989 in The Netherlands and since 1997 in Indonesia. What do you do when you’re not being Santa? Myself, my wife and business partner are running a production company producing movies and documentaries. Besides that I act sometimes in TV commercials, print ads and soaps and at last I write about the movie industry in magazines. What traits do you share with him? Loving children and effecting to give them a wonderful Christmas with beautiful presents. Do children of other faiths also join to sit on your lap and how do they react to you? Yes, when we meet and greet with a photo together children always sit on my lap and we always have a small chat in advance of the photo. They are curious regardless of their faiths.

Last but not least – what did you think of the movie “Bad Santa” starring Billy Bob Thornton? I am a bit leery of being a “Bad Santa” Star Deli boisterousness maxes me out! I try to remember that Santa is not the real star of Christmas!

Would one of your goals in life be to play Santa in a feature film? Yes, it would be an honour to play Santa in a movie. Actually I’ve been Santa already in a Metro TV program called Showbiz On Location where I brought Glenn Fredly, the famous Indonesian R & B singer, as a present for the viewers of the TV program.

Thanks Greg! Happy Christmas! And sincere thanks and best wishes to your good self. Yes… Congrats! You’re listed alongside nose pickers and bed wetters!

You’re quite a big guy. Doesn’t that scare the kids? Ha ha ha! Yes, sometimes with little babies they are scared and cry.

What shoe size do you wear? Can you find shoes in that size here? I wear size 46, which is not available here. My Santa outfit and accessories come all the way from the USA and The Netherlands! What’s it like being married to the number 1 actress of Indonesia, Christine Hakim? And how did you two meet? It’s very special to be married with Christine - she’s full of love, very wise and down to earth and as a consequence of her work there is a constant attention of fans and press. We met in a Dutch 2nd World War Movie in 1996 called The Tropic of Emerald (De Gordel Van Smaragd) In Indonesia. The way we fell in love is called CinLok which is Cinta Lokasi which means Love on Film Location. Your wife played in Eat, Pray, Love – are these things she shares with you as well? Yes of course, and when my wife on the set of this movie for one month, I visited her every weekend. What’s life like in Cibubur? I’m happy to live in picturesque Cibubur. We’re living in our own built Balinese Villa which is an oasis of rest because when you work in the hectic and noisy Jakarta centre, it’s a big relief to come home and load the batteries. What are your top three passions in life? 1. My wife, my love. 2. Acting/Producing/Writing/Watching films. 3. AFC Ajax and the Dutch national Soccer team! When can we catch you sharing the Christmas cheer in Jakarta? This year me and my Santa girl will be at Plaza Indonesia’s Miniapolis Children’s Department every Saturday and Sunday from 1pm till 3pm and from 4 pm till 7 pm. Ho Ho Ho! I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Christmas Tree

The Bargain Tree Hunter By Hush Petersen

I

f you plan on walking into a department store this week and dropping Rp 3.2 million on a six-foot tall fake Christmas tree, don’t read this story. But if Christmas tree haggling is something you pride yourself on, if you look at the whole thing more like Christmas tree hunting than shopping, by all means read on. The Christmas tree hunt in Indonesia is an adventure in and of itself. You trek back and forth across the city following dead leads from strangers on Twitter and stringing together half-baked phone conversations with guys like Yosep, who happens to have a dozen overpriced Christmas trees and an army of ducks behind his house in Kembangan in East Jakarta. Think of it like trying to find a pack of Super Mie in Iowa. It’s the thrill of the hunt. You might start off on the fourth floor of a department store scoffing at the price tags of the fake trees before convincing yourself to check out the selection of real trees along Dharmawangsa Raya, Jalan Arteri in Kebon Jeruk or Jalan Gerbang Pemuda, behind Gelora Bung Karno, before decided you want to “Go Green” and buy a plastic tree only to end up somewhere in the heart of Glodok, in a shop that looks like it doubles as an opium den, buttering up an ancient saleswoman who swears up and down that fake trees are supposed to look like they’re made of green pipe cleaners. It’s about the thrill of the hunt. It’s about the back-and-forth. Crossing and re-crossing your arms. Scratching your head. The narrowing of the gaze. Pacing back and forth. It’s a lot like poker, it involves patience and you have to do your research. You can’t just rock up to the first Christmas toko you see and expect to grab a good deal. You have to coax. You have to compliment. You have to have patience. Any chump can walk into a department store and drop $300 on a plastic tree. The kind of guy who does that is the same guy who tells the Blue Bird Driver to “just keep it,” when the cabby turns his head and tells him he doesn’t have change for a Rp. 100,000. But it takes more than moxie to head down to Mangga Dua and stand toe-to-toe with some of the best businesswomen or men in the city.

To see if you still got it. You may continually brag to your wife about your business acumen after getting the kids to bed last night without a fight, but if you can walk away with a 7-foot tree that doesn’t look like it survived AIDS or a tornado for Rp. 700,000. You deserve that tie your kids are going to buy you again this year. So, it’s good to say very little when you enter the Christmas tree Thunderdome. You just might learn something. It’s all sales. And this is not their first rodeo. This is a list of the things I heard at the shops I visited: “Why do you even want to buy a tree? There are a bunch of big trees over by the river. We could just go chop off one of the branches and you could wrap lights around that.” “Look, I get paid Rp. 350,000 a month, if I give you anything more than 45 percent off [a tree that retailed for Rp. 3.5 million] they’ll take it out of my salary.” “I know it doesn’t look like it’s 7-feet tall, but it is. I promise.” “This tree is from Taiwan, that’s why it’s expensive. If it was from China I could give you a better deal.” “Come here and smell this.”

“Why do you even want to buy a tree? There are a bunch of big trees over by the river. We could just go chop off one of the branches and you could wrap lights around that.”

like it’s 7-feet tall, but it is. I promise.”

“Look, either buy the tree or don’t. I could care less.”

“I’ve been working here for a month and I’ve already sold 727 trees. I wouldn’t lie to you.” “I don’t know if there are other shops that sell Christmas trees. I just come here every morning and do whatever that guy over there tells me to do.” “Look, either buy the tree or don’t. I could care less.” How much can you know about yourself if you avert your gaze every time it comes to bargaining? But it’s more important than not being the sucker. It’s about knowing the city you live in. Knowing where to go when you need something. If you haven’t braved the basement of Mangga Dua on a Saturday afternoon you haven’t lived. Same goes for Glodok. I didn’t walk away with a tree the day I was down there, but I did find plenty of stocking stuffers: fireworks, a guy selling a tarsir, a cage full of cobras and an alarmingly high array of methamphetamine pipes. 

It’s a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

History

Christianity N in Indonesia

o-one can be quite sure when Christianity first reached the Indonesian archipelago. The earliest hint comes from a kind of handbook for early travelling Christians. Though published in the twelfth century in Egypt by an Armenian historian and geographer, the idea of a manuscript providing information about churches and monasteries in Africa and Asia had been around for several centuries and many had been used as source material by Salih.

By Antony Sutton

The Armenian had mentioned a community of Nestorian Christians living in Fashur, trading in the highly prized camphor. The actual location of Fashur in the texts is vague but there was a port called Fanshur which was famous for camphor and it has been placed on the west coast of Sumatra near Baros, itself a town of some importance as it would receive many traders from southern India who would stop off there on their way to and from other entrepots. Indeed, Baros was so well known that the Greek historian Ptolemy was aware of its existence in the first century AD. With the vaguest of clues putting a timescale on Christians arriving in Baros and beyond, except for that one small clue there is little else to suggest a presence. Salih mentions a church, the Pure Virgin Mary, but that’s where the trail runs dry. Close to Baros lay the port of Lobu Tua and local Batak folklore suggests the port was built by foreign traders. Excavations suggests Lobu Tua dates from the 9th century, some 800 years after Ptolemy had first identified the site. Were those foreign traders early Christians serving the early fleets from the Malabar Coast as well as the Bataks in the hinterland? By the end of the 13th century there were sources suggesting Dabbagh, the name for Sumatra and Java at the time, had its own bishop. The famous Italian explorer Marco Polo also travelled round that area of North Sumatra but says little of Baros, by then no longer the power it had once been.

Gereja Tugu

In the middle of the 14th century a French priest, while travelling home from China, recalled meeting some Christians both at the court of Majapahit and Palembang. A few isolated scraps of information passed down through time give the merest hint of the possibility that come the Portuguese and Dutch explorers from 1500 onwards their ideas of salvation may not have been totally unknown to pockets of the populace. Halmahera is very far from anywhere these days. But its location next to the original spice islands of Tidore and Ternate means that its history is a very colourful one indeed. The tiny twin islands were forever at each other’s throats with fighting, sometimes spilling over to the much larger Halmahera.

Gereja Sion

In 1529, perhaps emboldened by the presence of some Spanish ships, the king of Halmehera conquered some land Ternate considered its own. Four years later Ternate fought back. Leading members of the Halmahera community were shocked by the treatment their fellow settlers had received at the hands of the returning Ternateans, taking their complaints to a prominent Portuguese businessman who advised them to convert to Christianity then seek the protection of the Portuguese.

This small, local dispute and the subsequent conversions was the start of the Roman Catholic community in what was to become Indonesia. It wasn’t all plain sailing of course with the various islands forever feuding. As it happened, the Portuguese were unable to protect the converts and many apostatized in the face of continuing aggression. From then on Christianity secured a firm foothold in the islands and even today Jakarta, amid its hustle, bustle and gridlock, boasts a number of old churches that have a tale or two lying in wait in their pews. Geraja Sion (Jalan Pangeran Jayakarta No 1, Kota), also known as the Portuguese Church, is the oldest church in Jakarta. Dating back to the late 17th century it was originally constructed to attract slaves of Bengali, Gujerati and Malay origin who had been received Portuguese names on being granted their ‘freedom’ and left to make their own way in the world. They were allowed to worship, on condition they converted from Catholicism to Protestantism and as long as they didn’t use Dutch. So for centuries they worshipped in Portuguese, for many the only common language binding them. Take Tugu Church, built in 1747, for example. There was something almost Amish in the way local residents hung on to traditional clothes, sprinkled their language with Portuguese and showed great pride in their music, keroncong, which has its roots in the Islamic occupation of the Iberian peninsula, in the face of Dutch power and increasing Indonesian nationalism at the turn of the 20th century. In 1811 the British invasion force, led by Stamford Raffles, would have marched past the tiny church after coming ashore at Cilicing and you can imagine Raffles, given his fascination with all things South East Asian, pausing for a moment or two admiring the little chapel that was nearly 150 years old, perhaps taking in tombstones dating back a century or more. Its appeal lies in its simplicity. A small, single-storied building almost hidden from the main road by a few trees, the whitewashed walls house a cosy congregation of a few dozen worshippers. Batak, Manadoese, Sighenese, Florentenes among others flock regularly north, fighting the industrial traffic that clogs the narrow, potholed lanes outside. Quaint is a word rarely associated with Jakarta but with the Anglican Church it seems apt. This pocket sized church was built by the British in 1821 and tells its tale through fading tombstones removed from their original location and added to the inside walls. There is the story of a Prisoner of War, held by the Japanese at the Tanjung Priok docks during the Second World War, who somehow found the time to make stained glass windows. 

o you still remember how it was in the good old days when Christmas was at our door steps? If my memory served me well you needed to go to the shop around mid November to buy your Christmas cards. Next stop, and indeed a stop it was, you went to the post office to stand in line for half a day, or longer to buy those cute Christmas stamps. Arriving at home you took the box where you stored the cards that you have received last year to determine to whom you will send your Christmas greetings this year. The most difficult part was to write a personal Christmas salutation for your close relatives. About 30 years ago I was working for an organisation that used a telex machine and perhaps the old guys under us will remember the wonderful Christmas greetings the telex operators were able to send to each other, like the picture you see here. If you look very closely you will see that this picture has been totaly made using just the QWERTY keyboard, meaning just the characters that are available on a teletype writer. I cannot imagine how long it would take to compose such a picture as computers where not available at that moment of time. The telex machine would be busy for half an hour or so to print (type) this Christmas greeting, but hey what the heck it’s Christmas. If you are interested in this kind of art, as art it is, there is a program that will convert your normal picture into this aged art form: www.ascii-fr.com Than we had the arrival of the World Wide Web and everything changed, including the way we send our Christmas and new year’s wishes. By using the internet we don’t always not go to theshop anymore for Christmas cards as we send our Christmas greetings online with one of the free online greeting cards websites like, for example, www.123greetings.com

no idea what it means?)

()”””() ,* ( ‘o’ ) ,*** =(,,)=(“’)<-*** (“”),,,(“”) “** MERRY CHRISTMAS to U By the way, did you know that MC stands for Merry Christmas? And that *<I:o)> is the official character for Santa Clause? Do you see it? If you don’t, just turn it 90 degrees clockwise.

Do you see it now? To make your life even more relaxing during these extremely stressful days you can find all kinds of free SMS Christmas greetings on the web: www.sms44.com/christmas-sms www.atrochatro.com/sms_christmas.html You will find text lines like: “If one night a big fat man jumps in at your window, grabs you and puts you in a sack don’t worry I told Santa I wanted you for CHRISTMAS. HAPPY CHRISTMAS!” It will also tell you the number of characters used in this sms (152).

Bali, a Smokefree Paradise? Bali’s legislative council enacted a smoke-free bylaw stating that hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, places of worship, healthcare facilities and schools are to be smoke-free areas. Violations of the bylaw can be punished by up to six months imprisonment and a Rp. 50 million (US$ 5,500) fine. “I want all people to be healthy and the bylaw is an implementation of the 2009 Health Law,” Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika said. “Regarding this smoking ban in tourism centres, I think tourists will understand. Instead, it is Bali’s people who often do not understand.” In addition to banning smoking in these places, the bylaw also forbids the sale of cigarettes and tobacco advertisements at these locations. What does this mean for the tourism industry on the island and what does it mean for you?

Send us your opinions at letters@jakartaexpat.biz and we’ll publish the best of the bunch right here and get a healthy debate going.

I just laughed when I read this. As a non smoker I›d say there›s nothing wrong with the principal idea of making public places, restaurants etc.. non-smoking. But making basically the whole Island a non smoking zone from one day to another? How could you even enforce this? This is so typical. They tried something similar in Jakarta a few years back when they decided Sudirman was to be a non smoking street (can you imagine, with all the traffic and exhausts from the old busses etc.?). Anyway, of course that didn›t work at all and neither will this. Why not start small and slowly to let people get used to the idea first? Lens TerWee Bar Manager, Eastern Promise, Kemang.

The Battle of the Beer I by Eamonn Sadler

t was Christmas Eve 1984, and, just like I did every year in those days, I was running around the shops at the last minute desperately trying to find gifts for my family that might loosely be described as “thoughtful”. As I was about to head home, mission kind of accomplished, I realised I had no beer in the house. Some friends were coming round later that night for a small party, so I needed to get some beer fast before the shops sold out (as they often did on one of the biggest party nights of the year). I hurried to the nearest supermarket and headed urgently towards the booze section. There, on the floor, was a case of 24 cans of beer, obviously the last

of a stack that had been snapped up by more organised planners of revelry. Through the bustling crowd of fellow last minute shoppers I could see another bloke on the opposite side of the case with a desperate look in his eye. We looked at each other, then at the case of beer, then back at each other. It was on. We both sprang towards the case of beer, pushing women and children aside and knocking old folk to the ground as we desperately raced for the prize. He reached the target slightly ahead of me and lunged towards it bent over with arms outstretched, but I out-smarted him by kicking it away from his grasp at the last second. He stumbled forward into a rack of Walkers crisps as I scooped up the still-sliding case of

beer without breaking my stride and made good my escape. I ran for the check out with the booty under my arm, fully expecting a flying neck-high rugby tackle at any second, but it never came. I paid and headed home to prepare for the night’s festivities, eager to tell my friends the story of the “battle for the last case of beer”. That night my friends arrived and I broke open the case of beer I had so heroically risked my life for earlier that day. As we drank our fill and got more and more rosy-cheeked, I told the story of how I had fought for and won our refreshment for the evening. We laughed heartily and slapped our thighs, tears rolling down our faces as we imagined the plight

of the poor soul who had left the supermarket bruised and empty handed, while our cups were running over. I may have slightly exaggerated the scale of his impact with the rack of Walker’s crisps. “Poor sod! He must be having a miserable Christmas Eve!” A jolly time was being had by one and all as we made our Christmas truly merry. Then suddenly my friend John shouted aloud, “Wait a minute!” and the room fell silent. He was holding up one of the cans and inspecting it closely. “This sh*t is alcohol free!” It was. In my haste I had failed to check before I paid. Everyone was instantly sober and I had gone from hero to zero. I wonder to this

From a Reader

"Experiences T of being an unlicensed tour guide in Jakarta"’

he countdown to Christmas begins and marks yet another year of me calling Indonesia my home. For the past few years, I often promote its beauty to my circle of friends. As a result, I have been juggling between my day-job and being an unlicensed tour guide in the Big Durian. Greeting guests at the airport can be a frustrating encounter. Despite the TV screens indicating arrival at gate D, I’ve had experiences where my friends were ushered out of Gate E instead and vice versa. Gone were the days when I waited like a moron at the arrival gate, nowadays, I just tell them to wait at KFC (the most recognizable icon at the airport). FYI, there are 3 A&Ws at the international arrival hall, so KFC’s your best bet. For those guests who can’t live without their smartphones, but refuse to pay for international roaming, the unlicensed tour guide readily has some spare local sim cards, some of which offer ridiculously low rates. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the first tourist attraction, ‘Macet’. Indonesian for traffic jam, ‘macet’ is ubiquitous in Jakarta. Even as we exit the airport’s parking lot, we are greeted by a sea of red; brake tail-lights. Good for you if Red’s your lucky color. Jakarta’s skyline is occupied with luxurious hotels. However, I always encourage my guests to stay with me. The HUE-ton (as I like to call it) may have limited rooms, but it’s FREE and comes with an English speaking guide. Unlike the international chain, breakfast only comes in the form of closeto-expiry biscuits left behind by the previous guest. The only ‘Stars’ you’ll see here are on the Bintang beer cans; also left behind by the previous guest. Whether it’s the HUE-ton or Hilton, blackouts and water disruptions are a frequent occurrence in Jakarta. Whilst the former can be solved through backup generators, the latter would leave some guests fuming when they are in need of a shower after a long day. As Christmas approaches, the management of shopping malls spare no expense and aim to outdo

each other with fancy Xmas décor and performances. Retailers enhance the mood by slashing prices or throwing in freebies, making Jakarta a haven for Christmas shopping. Whether it’s a fancy gadget for him, or a spa package for her, Jakarta’s 564 shopping centres has something for everyone. Most of the ‘worth-a-visit’ tourist attractions are out of Jakarta; Taman Safari, Bandung, Pulau Seribu, to name a few. Bear in mind that some of them charge higher admission for foreigners. So it helps if you’re Asian and look like the regular ‘Pak’ or ‘Ibu’ on the street. Try your best to not speak and let the driver buy the tickets whenever possible. During a recent visit to Taman Safari, my friend once sang to Britney’s ‘ Oops I did it again’, which prompted the ticket seller to ask for our local IDs. She really did it again. Nowadays, as we approach the ticketing booth, I always tell everyone to pretend to be asleep if they each want to save a few bucks. We just pass all the cash to the driver beforehand. Again.. only workable if you’re Asian, Lol. Believe it or not, the supermarket is also a place of interest. A friend once bought over 30 tubes of toothpaste as souvenirs, in lieu of ‘I love Jakarta’ T-shirts and keychains, citing it was cheaper and more practical, although it may send the wrong message, especially if when he was planning to give one to his girlfriend too.. Haha. Very importantly, Jakarta may be a good place to shop, but we must always remember to tell our guests to keep some cash for the airport tax. Unlike most countries, the airport tax is not included into the ticket price, hence it has to be paid at the check-in counter. It may not pay the rent but I do enjoy being an unlicensed tour-guide. Gotta run, my guests are arriving soon. Ciao! 
