//BRIEF BACKGROUND
Colour is brave. Colour is bold. Colour is real. And it’s, well, colourful. Pantone supports the creative community to deliver, execute, and live that fact. Pantone sets the standard for colour. Nothing else comes close to the diversity or reality of colour of Pantone. And colour is vital. It matters. It’s colour that tells you when to go and when to stop. It’s how you know which tap to turn on, and the reason you know when to be wary of something. But it’s not just instructional. Colour is emotional, personal, and evokes our deepest and sincerest feelings. The same colour can mean a myriad different things to a million different people, and everyone has their favourite. In the physical, real world colour is a massive part of everything, from which sports team you follow, the political party you support, to your personal or even national identity – whether the colour’s on your flag or just your favourite mug. But because of its ubiquity, people can take colour for granted. And that’s not good news for creativity.
THE CHALLENGE
Reimagine your hometown through a new colour scheme. Think about everything that this identity could include, physical and digital: logo, transport, wayfinding, etc. ‘Hometown’ could mean where you’re from, where you are now, or just a place that you feel you belong – even if you’ve never lived there.
WHO IT’S FOR
The people, organisations, businesses, and communities that make up your hometown. Your solution should be something that everyone who lives, works, or is part of your hometown can own, adopt and experience, whoever they are.
WHAT TO CONSIDER
• Think about the opportunities digital can bring, but don’t neglect the physical. Make something tangible to the community. • Take the core elements of identity design (colour, typography, brand applications...) then build bigger with them. How can you put them to active use? • Do field research. Really understand what colour means to the town at the moment, and see how you can change or improve that. • Consider your town’s character. How can you reflect and celebrate this? And how might this affect what the town needs from its new identity? • Colour doesn’t need to be flat. Language, imagery, objects, sounds... many things can be described as colourful. How could you incorporate them? • How can colour permeate people’s lives to effect positive change?
WHAT’S ESSENTIAL
A colour-led integrated graphic identity, with digital and physical applications. Show: • The key elements of your solution. • Example applications. • How you made your creative decisions.

As well as being a world wide recognised paint production company, pantone are also recognised as a leading design aiders. Producing and selling and highly accurate colour swatches, with shades from 300-800 allowing designers to identify any colour and any shade.
CORPORATE OVERVIEW Pantone LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of X-Rite, Incorporated, is the world-renowned authority on color. For nearly 50 years, Pantone has been inspiring design professionals with products, services and leading technology for the colorful exploration and expression of creativity. In 1963, Lawrence Herbert, Pantone’s founder, created an innovative system for identifying, matching and communicating colors to solve the problems associated with producing accurate color matches in the graphic arts community. His insight that the spectrum is seen and interpreted differently by each individual led to the innovation of the PANTONE® MATCHING SYSTEM®, a book of standardized color in fan format.
Pantone has since expanded its color matching system concept to other color-critical industries, including digital technology, fashion, home, plastics, architecture and contract interiors, and paint. Today, the PANTONE Name is known worldwide as the standard language for accurate color communication, from designer to manufacturer to retailer to customer, across a variety of industries. Pantone continues to develop color communication and inspirational tools, and aggressively adopts new digital technology to address the color needs of the creative community everywhere. Pantone was acquired by X-Rite, Incorporated in October 2007.
//Selection Location For my chosen location for the Pantone d&ad brief i have decided to choose the town that i have spent the vast majority of my life and childhood and where i currently live with my parents and family. I have chosen to do Audenshaw as my location, as i feel that its current colour scheme and condition doesnt reflect the city or the community that calls it home. I feel it has became appart of a dull routine, people head down at their phones. I feel a brighter and stronger colour scheme will change the current vibe off the city. Audenshaw has a rich history and heritage coming from a mining community and a mill ran cotton factory. Audenshaw is spread out around the oldist landmark of
Audenshaw traditional coat of arms dating to the early 1800s, featuring a pick axe and a mill
the city, Audenshaw reservoir which hasnt changed since 1877. The name Audenshaw is a derivative from its original name in the saxon era as Aldwinshagh. As well as the Audenshaw reservoir, other landmarks include St stephens church, the church was constructed in 1846 at a total cost of ÂŁ2,900 which in modern society would equate to around 300k. The second eldist building is rycroft hall which is currently listed as a grade 2 building. It was donated to the people of Audenshaw to be used and ran as the citys town hall in 1921. alongside the the Rycroft hall stands the war memorial and cemetery to the 140 men who were from Audenshaw who lost their lives in

world war 1. Audenshaw is located in the council of Tameside, which is in the centre of Greater Manchester. It boarders neighburd cities Ashton and Denton. Audenshaw has a population of 15000 recorded in 2014, though the population has gone up and down since 2011at one point dropping down to 9000 people in 2011. With in Audenshaw lyes to smaller citys, of guide bridge being noted as being a long standing part of Audenshaws
long standing history. Audenshaw consists of mainly old factorys that now stand deserted, with the old cotton mill. Which is the reason for the mill wheel in the Audenshaws coat of arms. The Ashton under lyne canal runs straight along the side of the vast amount of factorys on towards the suburban areas of Audenshaw, towards the town hall of Rycroft. In the area of rycroft run three large parks, the main one being connected to the hall used by

the boarders and location of Audenshaw which boarders along the city west yorkshire which features the white roses on its coat of arms. Also featured on the image, is the old wheel sitting on top of the knights helmet. This makes refrence to the to Audenshaws starting industry of Cotton mills, running along the Ashton under lyne canal. Under the the helmet an featuring down the centre of coats shield, is a pick axe. Audenshaw originaly being a mining city with the vast majority of its population working in the mines at one point in their history in the 1800s to the early 1900s. In terms of theme colours other than the coat of arms is the newly built metrolink built in
2013 which opened up to run through Audenshaw, the colour scheme features a bright yellow and a tone of grey through out all its locations. The trams them selfs feature a break away pattern made up oiut of polygons starting from a full and bold colour to a lose and and spread pattern. This gives the theme a gradient feel, though i believe this is Audenshaws first step in a brighter theme and colour, i do feel the limitness of yellow and grey doesnt really brighten the spirits, but much remind one of construction and yellow work jackets

I began by asking the public what theyre current feeling on the colour theme, to avoid having essays worth of answers apon question i kept it with in a simple yes, no, satisfactory and unsatisfactory. Colour pyschology From my community research i had come to the conclusion that with smartly using specific colours you can sway the audience to a certain mood. With this i feel i could set up a few social experiments on colour in certain areas for example on the tram stops or bus stops, or even with in the transport services which feature poster boards in-

Apon further research into colour pyschology. Colours can also incorage activities in specifics, one that interests me most is purple. Purple is suppose to incorage creativity apon viewing. I find the idea of this interesting though i feel it may not work completely on my self being that i am colour deficient ‘colourblidnd’ but not black and white 1940s

Mood cards
Apon researching colour pyschology i felt like atempting to use the theory behind it as a social experiment . I began by drawing out some ideas and experimenting, i felt like placing typography with in the design may make more sense to the viewer audience, after a few mock up designs i felt like adding the word releated to colour worked as positive reinforcement for the audience, particularly for the ‘colour’ challanged as my self. I experimented with types of typeface, trying large bold but loose typeface to trying tight and carefully gurned typefaces.
I also came to an idea that would involve using specific light shade senstive paint, which would make the typography only visable at specific angles depending where you’re stood . However i deemed this idea slight unrealistic and though the idea of it seems different and out there, it may be to out there for an audience as wide as an entire community of house owners in Audenshaw and neighburing citys. One idea struck a chord which i felt gave me something to run with, basing the design of it on the pantone colour swatch cards.

Create Calm Create Calm I decided to roll with the idea of basing design work the pantone colour swatches whilest continuing the ida of colour pyschology. I decided that where the colour code was once placed on the Pantone colour swatches, was a good fitting to place my reiforcing words of the mood coloured psychology.
I chose to keep my colour pallete as mellow as possible, i was wary on selecting the yellow for the positive smile reincorcing card. As i felt it may have been a little to similar to the pre exsisting theme set by the metrolink with the yellow and grey set toned theme.

Development After playing with the developments i took from the sketchwork i decided to takee it further in terms of concept. I wanted to see what the possibilitities would be with in the idea of it. Todo so i had a look where i could place these adverts where they would be seen by the correct target audience, and where they’d be most noticed in an understanding sense. Rather than just a large block of colour with a word slapped on under it. I came up with the concept idea of making these colour cards i decided to take it an iteractive level. Atleast yet in concept terms. I decided to add qr codes to the designs by stretching them out and making them longer, these qr codes would then lead to a
visit Audenshaw website where the cards would then be able to explain them selves, and the audience could read up on the campaign of it. I also thought that i could set up an app to accomondate the the design works. Where as for example if you was to scan the card featured on the next page ‘create’ would lead you to a video on a tutorial to learn something new, such as paper stenciling or origami. I feel like a concept idea like this could make the campaign successful by making the audience, the public of Audenshaw purposely look for all the different colour pyschology cards to see which each one leads you to. These cards could be distrubuted in a variety of different sizes.

Logo Development
Colours that Whilest on the current theme of researching colour and its pottential i decided to look and take inspiration from the brief setter. Pantone, They look for colours that match one and other and will always go no matter what the sittuation or design i felt like this was interesting and quite fun
todo personaly. I enjoyed finding out what colours worked and which didnt rather than completely looking at pantones colour book or some thing similar to that. One thing i noticed through this research was that lighter tone colours tend togo no matter what the difference. Where as
4.
work together Bold colours tend to clash more, even when placed with equaly bold colours. The bold colours achieve higher attention, though they take away the attention of the main purpose of the design work. The bolder colours work with a lighter typeface, whilest a skinny font is out done by the bold
colours, where as a bold font in a light colour such as white can work depending on the contrast between the colours together.
Shapes
Carrying on the experimental theme with colours i decided to take a leap out of the exsisting theme with the metro link by making colour tones out of shapes. I also experimented with making shapes out of shapes, this could be used to be interpitated and intergrated in other design work such as the concept of the colour pyschology cards. Instead of having block colours, having shapes of shapes. The typeface could go inside the the circle or perhaps the qr code inside.
I then decided to play around with three dimensional shapes with simplistic colours, adding a slight glow to the lines making the colours enhanced. This would work good as a simplstic design on transports such as the tramline, even with the exsisting colour theme of the yellow. I then experimented with creating coloured shapes out of paper, by cutting shapes repeatedly and then overlapping the pieces to create different shapes.
&
&
Colours still taking inspiration from the pre exsisting theme of the metrolink by cutting varyig sizes of shapes in to the paper.
4.
I then decided to experiment with a digital concepts of the repeative shapes, for this i used polygons by repeatidly placing them, making sure to vary the shapes and sizes of the polygons. Once i had felt i had created enough i then duplicated the entire side and flipped it over to mirror the exsisting side. I then decided to add colours to the polygons making sure to take my research of matching and equivlant colours from my previous research. I decided to stick to the neutral colours .
4.
I briefly experimented with the coloured tiles, by multiplying them and placing them on top of each other to get a diamond affect. I thought the mix of colours worked, however the mix of the darker green was slightly overpowering in comparision to the neutral colours.
4.
I decided to experiment with the digital illustrations by placing them on to photographs i have turned in to templates from the images i have taken from around Audenshaw.

4.
I decided to play with words and stencils, i enjoy cutting stencils so this was enjoyable and fun, however after a few attempts after trying to string along six or seven words together on an a1 sheet with clear crisp lines wasnt as easy as exspected. However i decided to then work on the pieces that i had by adding sharpie markers to the letters, making them more interesting than they had came out from the stencils.
I liked the affects i could get with the lines, by making them more domiant making the colour dominant and stand out. The excess spray became less of a problem and more of a filler with the sharpie lines and splats.
Through a perspe
a different ective
I originaly came up with the idea as a concept for a new method of thinking to approach this project. I wanted to view the project brief from a different perspective as i was becoming fixed on a particular idea to my self. So i came up with the different perspective idea, casually drawing a pair of glasses, i then decided to turn it into a stencil. with paint splashes only being visable through the eye lens. I really liked the idea of containing the splashes
and having the concept of literaly looking through a different pair of eyes, and seeing the world with all these colours. I also tryed with out containing the splashes and having the paint splat everywhere and then spraying the glasses over the mess with a matte black finish. I liked this style too however i don’t think it was an impactive and took away the whole idea of the concept of only through those leneses the colours exsist.
4.
A childs imagination
4.
As i mentioned early i wanted to approach this project from a different perspective and angle other than my own. Todo this i recruited the help of many nieces and newphews to draw and paint pictures with me. This inspired me with the idea of paying homage to the younger generation of the community, the children. The observant ones, the ones who love to scrall on their mothers walls with crayons. I felt like that woud be a good angle to work from having the children take over the city paint theme. This could attract the elder audience, the parents, with that being thats its not their own walls of their bedrooms.
As well as incoraging the younger audience to also draw and create them selves. Thus giving an endless supply of new work to project on to the advertising posters and billboards. I think these designs would work more as advertising posters on a larger scale such as billboards and bus stop posters.
5.
A perfect spot for the example of a good location for the type of area where this type of design would suit. Coming straight of the motorway this is the first billboard and advertising spot you see as you come in to Audenshaw.
A splash of colour
I absolutely love making a mess with paint, i am always fasinated by paint drips, splashes. The image in the bottom left was created by using a cut out from a stencil, and placing it over a piece of stretched out paper. I then filled balloons with paint and proceeded to pop the balloons which resulted in the paint covering everywhere but the covered section. This was really fun todo and would of loved to have been able todo this over a big scaled wall creating a great affect.
4.
The images on this side of the page i layed a a2 piece of paper on the wall and ran paint along the top till he began to run down the page, this caused a great running path affect of paint. If it was possible i would love to cover everything in this affect, but unfortantetly this would get me arrested and most likely charged with criminal damage. The image above i created in a similar manner except this time i hovered above a page whilest squeesing paint out in drops over a piece of paper causing a layering affect of colours. I wanted todo a similar piece of how i did with the balloons but due to the weight and mass of the paint the cover up stencil was disintergrated by the paint and was unable to lift it.
Creating paint brush
To create my digital stencil and paint drip/splash pieces i came up with a method by getting accetate and blank pieces of paper by laying them out on the ground and then throwing paint at them by flicking them through paint brushes and spray cans, by doing it at different angles and motions to get different splats and flicks.
Once i had done this and let the paint dry i then run the sheets through a scanner, the sheets of accetate work best for this method as they show the splats up propperly, if a spacific drip doesnt show up as well they can be enhanced in photoshop by adjusting the brightness and contrast.
4.
Once i’m happy with the drip, i then select the drips, by selecting it through the colour pallette, i then go into the brush settings and loading it as a brush, and after fiddeling with the settings i then save and name the brush, heres an example of one i made by selecting it through the accetate sheet.
The community I wanted to create these series of stencils to represent the community as well as being something appealing to the eye still bearing in mind of my research on what colours highlight and strenghten one and other some of the characters i wanted to create we’rent to easy to come by photography wise so one or two, including this one was sketched out through refrences and cut straight to stencil. This is why the lack of details around the facial features however, i feel it adds a more of a openly feel to the characters, that they could pertray any one with and any group of people with in the community in Audenshaw. I feel this stencil and this piece in particular works well with the use of white, i used the white out line theme in general to play on the concept of white walls, being painted with a new thema, a new era. I wanted to capture the community to place at certain points around the city to the appearance that they have had paint spray all around them and all thats left of the white wall is where they were stood.
6.
Again playong on the consistent theme of capturing the community of guard and preserving their presence in paint. I feel this one doesnt have a as a strong as a presense than the previous one as maybe the over do in paint over powers the stencil and becomes more about the paint drips rather than the characters .
With this second image, i wanted to capture the usual sight of the working mornings, with the buissness men and woman waiting at the tram stops and the bus stops to go to work. I know this isnt the brightest and the best part of the day, but i wanted to take a lighter look to this by putting my own spin on.
6.
here are some more of the series of stencils i have created two of which seen before, but i felt they are relevant to the series of capturing the community. I wated to capture the mix of the community from between the youth, the workers and the familys of Audenshaw i wanted to try a mix of different paint techniques of having overlaying paint and underlapping paint.
Ocasionaly more noticeable in the bottom two stencils, the paint would come out over sloppy and messy, but i feel this just adds character to the to the idea of the the goal of adding more paint and more colour to the exsisting theme.
6.
As i mentioned earlyier i wanted to try a mix of inverted and verted stencils, by scontaining the paint ( bottom two) and spraying around the individual ( top two) i feel this added a contrast to the work rather than one single theme.
6.
On this side i wanted to capture the famalies and the young children of the community, the connections between them, when painting these stencils i thought of the colour pyschology i researched, i wanted to choose the bright and warm colours.
6.
6.
6.
6.
In this image i wanted to make the presence subtle, rather than in your face, i feel the size of the poster does the job that i set out to, making it life size. Which achieves my concept of catching the community of guard.
for this image i wanted to project the image in a different concept to give it a clean image, to what it would look like outside of the public.
6.
